morning news. and good morning. i'm claudine wong. pam cook has the morning off. it is thursday june 2nd. what a strange start to the month it's been in terms of weather. so what can we expected to? meteorologist steve paulson is here to tell us. hi, steve. claudine wong, good morning. yes. very advantage early june weather. it will continue all the way into the weekend. no sign of a warm up. 50s and 60s. a heat wave in morgan hill. go 70 degrees. here comes another round of off and on rain. look at that and take a look at the upcoming weekend in about five minutes. here's sal. traffic looks good but a little bit of road work you can see at the coliseum. one lane is closed. it's so early and light that the traffic is not going to be effected so far. also this morning's commute looks good in san francisco. 4:31. let's go back to the desk. and we begin with developing news out of oakland.

power lines are down on 44th avenue right now after a transformer explosion. ktvu channel 2 reporter jade hernandez just arrived on the scene. jade, what can you tell us? >> reporter: i can tell you we are live along 44th and east 12 in san lee andre. an officer is out here right now because he's making sure no traffic gets close to that. that's a downed power line. it's hard to see in the dark here, but you can see down the street a pg&e crew already working at this hour. we've called the utility to get more information but for now we know that the officer saw three flashes of light and then it appeared the power went out. there's no sign of any crash or incident which would have led to the outage, but we do know that the officer noticed the outage around 3:20, 3:30 this morning. pg&e arrived about 30 minutes later around 4:00 a.m. we've been told that this area is known for having issues regarding illegal marijuana growth. illegal growers siphon power

for their hydroponic operations and overwhelm transformers leading to outages and fires. at this point no one can say what caused this outage. what it's due to or how long folks in this area will be without power, but you can see pg&e is working on the problem. an officer is keeping traffic away. we are live along 44th and we will bring you the latest details as soon as we get more information. reporting live from east oakland, jade hernandez, back to you in the studio. now to a dangerous situation that faced emergency crews responding to an overnight fire in pleasant hill. they arose to the sound of exploding ammunition in a burning apartment house. ktvu's kraig debro is live on the scene with more on what happened. >> reporter: good morning. i just spoke to the dispatcher with the contra costa county fire department she tells me there was a report of live ammunition. this is residence property of people owned inside. according to the fire department when they got here they found the apartment on the

second floor fully engulfed in flames. it came in around 10:30 last night. it was a one alarm fire. we understand from fire dispatch that nobody was hurt. but i talked to somebody on the scene a little later. he tells me the man inside the apartment had a fairly nasty burn on his hand. this is kind of secondhand information but he talked to the person that was here. person said this started in a power strip. the guy try today pick up the power strip and that's how he burned his hand all the way through. the red cross was here helped four adults and one child with separate places to live. the guy here was a board up contractor. the report of ammunition on the scene the man who lived in this upstairs apartment definitely loaded some firearms into his truck before leaving the scene. the reason the fire department had no report of injury is the guy refused medical attention at least initially. i'm told later on he did seek medical attention at the hospital. coming up we're going to talk to some other tenants at this building to tell us what they saw. live in pleasant hill, kraig

debro, ktvu channel 2 news. an explosion overnight at ocean beach as the bomb squad disposed of military ammunition. early yesterday night the san francisco bomb squad was call today this home. police say a man found world war ii era ammunition inside his rental home. the bomb squad took that ammunition to ocean beach, dug a hole and blew it up. here's the blast again in slow motion. sections of the great highway were shut down as a safety precaution. later this morning phillip and nancy garrido will be sentenced for a kidnapping and raping jaycee dugard. the couple pled guilty last month as part of a plea deal. both could spend the rest of their lives in jail. prosecutors have asking # asked for a maximum sentence of 431 years for phillip garrido. jaycee could make an appearance in court today. the judge will hold another hearing on whether to release grand jury transcripts which includes testimony from dugard. she was kidnapped in south lake

tahoe and held captive for 18 years. word of a mountain lion siting. two women spotted the animal on the track at the miller creek campus in redwood tuesday night. they were about 50 feet away. one of the women says she actually locked eyes with the cougar and then the animal took off. school officials did not hear about the incident, but the marin humane society was notified. today hayward police will focus on cell phone calls as they set up their search for a missing nursing student. there was evidence someone was making phone calls on michelle le's phone the day after she disappeared. she was last seen friday night heading to a parking garage at the hospital in hayward. police found her locked honda suv a few blocks away. investigators have also identified some persons of interest in her disappearance and have served at least four search warrants. the suspect in the beating of giants fan bryan stow has now taken two lie detector tests in the past two days. los angeles police administered one test yesterday a day after the defense team carried out

their own test. a polygraph expert for the test is now hinting that giovanni ramirez passed them both. ramirez's lawyer is hoping prosecutors will soon drop the charges. >> we think 100% our client is innocent. he didn't beat bryan stow and he wasn't at dodgers stadium. he's never been to dodgers stadium. >> los angeles police maintain they have a strong case against the ex-convict and known gang member. and prosecutors say they will soon file formal charges in the stow beating case. players in los angeles angels are safely back on the ground this morning after their plane was forced to make an emergency landing overnight. the delta charter plane landed last night. the pilot made the decision to land early after noticing a hydraulic problem. no one was hurt and the team was coming back from an away game in missouri. it finished the rest of the trip by bus. time 4:37. head over to sal on this early

it's june right? yeah, it's june. that's what the calendar tells me. and we still have very unsettled pattern. today will be a little calmer than yesterday. numerous reports of hail and also some funnel clouds, tornadoes, but mainly out towards yolo county and sacramento we had some rain here and then wasn't bad. but today another little ban coming down out of the northwest. that's why the north bay is in line for more right there very light rain. but it's there and it scoots on by. there's not a lot to it. today partly to mostly cloudy. light off and on rain. better opportunity would be again towards the north bay. towards the south bay might have partly sunny, mostly sunny day. friday low develops offshore. the timing is tough. the reason being is because this is the last little low in the pattern. usually every one before that had a kicker to bump it along. this one does not. but it's the strongest. so the timing is tough. i think we're all right friday but fine tune it tomorrow. rain moving in over the

it's at the north edge of ewe baa city. it touched down just before 6:00 saturday night. no reports of damage. also reports of a funnel cloud across several counties including butte and yuba. that's the same area where several tornadoes touched down last week. yesterday's storms died out as they moved into the sierra foothills. the governor of massachusetts declare add state of emergency after two tornadoes hit his state. two people died and more than 40 others hurt after twisters ripped off roofs and uprooted trees across the southern part of the state. more than 20 cities reporting damage and 55,000 homes and businesses are still without power. a major setback in budget negotiations in san jose. the department that could face more than a hundred additional layoffs as a result. and how technology helped catch this thief. good morning. highway 4 traffic looking good heading west. tell you more about the morning commute and the bay weather.

good morning. we have some rain moving through the north bay. mostly clear though towards the south bay. so temperatures today sun, clouds, showers, continued cool but slightly warmer especially in areas south of san francisco and oakland. high winds and rough terrain are proving to be a major setback for firefighters in arizona battling a major wild fire. crews say they have now lost containment of the horseshoe 2

fire. the flames burned 73,000 acres so far but that number may double before this is all over. the fire is now the fifth largest in arizona history. started about a month ago and officials say people are to blame. the u.s. and pakistan are forming a joint intelligence team to go after top terrorism suspects inside pakistan. the effort comes after secretary of state hillary clinton's visit to pakistan last week. she gave pakistani officials the u.s. list of most wanted terrorism targets. the joint intelligence team is part of an attempt to restore trust between the two countries after u.s. forces killed osama bin laden during a secret raid in pakistan last month. it now seems likely more san jose police officers are going to be laid off at the end of this month after contract talks broke down. city negotiators and the police union failed to reach agreement by a midnight deadline last night. the city was already posed to lay off 122 police officers. without a contract deal an additional 156 officers may be laid off. the city council could order both sides back to the bargaining table before those

layoffs become effective. a new poll shows majority of californians support governor jerry brown's call for a special election to let voters to decide whether to extend expiring tax increases in an effort to close the state's budget deficit. 62% of likely voters say they want a special election that's up 50 # from 56% a month ago. it's not clear if they would vote to extend the taxes. 46% support the tax extension while 48% say they oppose them. a pinole elementary school set to close next week will stay open for at least another year. >> congratulations. good work. >> it was a packed house last night as the west contra costa school board voted unanimously to keep shannon elementary school open. the vote reverses a 2009 decision to close the school, but it is only temporary. the state trustee overseeing finances says she will not prevent the school to stay open past next june. the pastor of a menlo park

made from prison issued shaving blades and scrap metal. the inmate who was attacked turned to san quentin after being treated at an outside hospital. police say that incident was likely gang-related. this morning a man will be charged with breaking into an oakland apartment and stealing a computer. and the computer itself helped track down the suspect. the laptop had a best tracking software called hidden and snapped these photos of the owner posted the picture on his blog and revealed the person worked at a cab company. that gave enough information to make this case priority. >> we have about 125 theft reports coming through our system every single month. we have three theft investigators tasked with handling all of those. >> the software works by tracking the computer's location in quarter mile increments and takes photos with the built in web cam. it also monitors online activity which is how police

found out about the cab company. hidden software costs $15 a year. take a look at this surveillance video. san rafael police are trying to identify the man seen here robbing a subway sandwich shop. you can see him pulling a gun out of his bag. there he goes. the clerk puts her arms up before emptying the register. that robbery took place on friday at the main square shopping center location. anyone with information is asked to call police. hackers in china broke into hundreds of g mail accounts including those used by u.s. government officials. google which owns g mail believes the hackers obtained pass words to g mail accounts and changed settings on some of them. also says the hackers were able to monitor the accounts of chinese political activists, journalists and military personnel. ordered to take steps to protect their internet information. giants are stepping up to plate in support of lbj teenagers. >> we all know how difficult life can be as a teenager.

pipelines by june 20th but now pg&e says it will not be able to track those documents down until the end of next year. state regulators asked for the files as part of their investigation into the san bruno pipeline explosion. former massachusetts governor mitt romney will officially enter the 2012 presidential race this morning. romney set to announce his run at a farm in new hampshire. in excerpts from his speech romney says he's positioned to defeat president obama and "turn around the country." he ran for the gop nomination four years ago but lost to arizona senator john mccain. today the first lady will unveil the new shape of eating right. this food pyramid is being replaced by a new plate shape design. nutritionists say the pyramid is hard to understand and confusing consumers. the new plate design will be broken into four parts. grains, protein, fruits and vegetables. it will be designed to show how much of each food group you should include on your plate. california lawmakers are trying to limit teens from using tanning beds.

the state senate approved a bill yesterday that bars anyone under the age of 18 from using tanning beds because of cancer concerns. right now children older than 14 can use tanning beds with parental permission. the bill now goes to the assembly. the transportation authority meet today to decide whether to fund a proposed train in the north bay. sonoma marin trail transit or smart would run between windsor and lark spur. the agency is asking for more than $80 million for the project, but critics say that would deprive funding from other transportation projects and bus service to marin. all right. time now 4:54. let's head right out to sal who is watching this power outage situation. sal. that's right. we're watching it because 1500 customers are without power in the area of 44th and international. some of the traffic lights may also be out of -- without power obviously and making them four way stops. you see pg&e's up on the pole working with the high voltage lines.
