clara valley. here is sal. traffic on 880 northbound is moving along very nicely right past the coliseum. there are no major problems. traffic is moving along okay all the way to the bay bridge toll plaza which looks good. now let's go back to the desk. time new 6:01. continuing coverage now. that deadly house fire in san francisco's diamond heights neighborhood. kraig debro is at the scene now with what we're learning about the firefighter killed in the line of duty and the audio recordings about the first calls for help. >> reporter: those audio recordings are really, really telling we actually can hear the emotion in the firefighters voice. behind is berkeley way preponderate officer on the scene here. there is tape here. if you take a quick look to the right you can see the officers talking to a gentleman. this is taped off. this is a crime scene just because the death involved and

the potential for more. officer told me the firefighters here say they are expecting cal osha to arrive this morning. san francisco police and fire will be part of an investigation in what happened in berkeley way yesterday. we pulled down some audio from the internet as they tried to save three of their own. >> we have two critical firefighters. transporting one critical. >> reporter: vincent perez died yesterday at the hospital following this fire in the diamond heights neighborhood. the cause of death is not officially determined. you can say perez died on the job trying to protect others. he's one of 30 firefighters responding to a fire call. perez and two other firefighters were on the first floor of the building.

they got caught in a flash over. one firefighter was able to walk out of the situation a third was transported to the hospital. >> third degree burns. also in full arrest. >> he serves valiantly for 21 years. he was a classmate of mine. we started out together. born and raised in san francisco. a very proud san franciscan. >> reporter: now firefighters of course mourning the death of lieutenant perez and they are also keeping vigil at the hospital where their other colleague is trying to recover from all of this. the cause of fire is under investigation. that is what part of the fire department will look into. we understand that fire department was first alerted to what was going on inside the house because firefighters have

with them an emergency button if you will so they can tell dispatchers and other people outside what is happening inside if they get into an emergency. that is what first alerted firefighter there is are problems inside the home. we will with moving in from this location. we will go down the hill a little bit. we will try to go down the hill and look up and give you what a shot of what the house looks like. reporting live from san francisco kraig debro. >> the family of the firefighter critically injured in the house fire is holding vigil beside his bedside this morning. rescue crews found him unconscious yesterday as well. family members tell us valerio is not breathing on his own but also tell us they think he will be ready to return to his fire fighting duties once he makes a full recovery. >> he loves his job.

police and they fired back. no one was hurt. the suspect did run away but he was captured about four hours later. it may cost more to park in san jose. jade hernandez tells us about the plan that is already angering not just drivers but business owners. jade. >> reporter: we are live in front of the second and san carlos parking garage. it costs $2 and a quarter to park per hour in the parking garage. the cost could soon go up. the city plans to raise the fee by 25 to 33% to pay for a city garage. what that means for drivers at the parking garage at second and san carlos is the cost to park will go up if if approved by the city council members. drivers do not only see a hike per day. pushing up the cost of parking

in a garage would generate a little more than half a million dollars for the cities. the proposed rate changes will effect city own garages. the city does plan to offer drivers an incentive to continue paying. they would offer diners on nights and weekends longer periods of free parking. of course businesses say any rate hike approved means they are going to wind up paying the difference and they are afraid shoppers will find other places to dine and eat when they come downtown. reporting live jade hernandez. time is now 6:08. we are getting new details about jaycee dugard 18 years in captivity. they released the transcript yesterday. dugard said she was walking to

a school bus stop near her home when a man she now knows as phillip garrido grabbed her and zapped her with a stun gun. he dragged her into a car where his wife nancy was waiting and drove off laughing. that was the beginning of the little girls long sexual abuse nightmare. >> there are specific details that this court eluded to that are horrendously graphic and i think the courts description was that it's pornographic. >> jaycee dugard said she was raped once a week until she gave birth to phillip garridos two daughters. she says she never once tried to run away in those 18 years because she was afraid of garridos explosive temper. she worried she would pull out that stun gun again. the judges released those transcripts at the end of the sentences day for the garridos.

phillip will spend the rest of his life in prison. his wife nancy will do the same. she will not be eligible for a patrol hearing. jaycee dugard was not in the courthouse for yesterday's sentencing but she had her mother read her emotional statement. her angry words were directed mostly at phillip garrido. she says i hated every second of every day for 18 years. president obama flied to a chrysler plant in ohio. he will draw attention to the auto industry turn around. coming up at 6:15 we will have a live report with why the president feels confident that the bailout was money well spent. pg&e is running full page ads in full california newspapers apologizing for the deadly san bruno pipeline

inland. the low will sit there. there lies the challenge. how long will it sit there? will it retro grade back? there is nothing to push it along. off and on rain. better opportunity closer to the west. once that low gets going everybody is in for rain. 45 napa. 44 livermore. a lot of upper 40s here or upper 50s. you get a good look at the low. it's not coming towards us it's pointing straight down. spinning south ahead of it is tremendous amount of cloud cover. our system is taking shape. it's continuing to develop. it's also packing just a heck of a lot of cloud cover with it. some clouds. increasing clouds likely. but then as the system sweeps in, the front will sweep in first. that will be saturday. it will weaken as it moves

east. the rain develops heaviest along the coast. then when the low moves in that will give us more rain and possible thundershowers on sunday into monday. increasing clouds today. rain is possible later on. not before we end up with 50s and 60s. some afternoon highs in the inland areas are 20 degrees below average. few low 70s morgan hill and gilroy under mostly sunny skies. cloudy with the rain moving in. after that, things do look quieter. it's been burning for a month. this morning there are new concerns about a major wild fire in arizona. also you can say thank you to world war i veterans for a free and delicious snack today.

time now 6:16. high winds really making it tough for a fire crews battling this large wild fire in arizona. it started a month ago. evacuations have been ordered in two communities. firefighters worry that wind gusts may push the flames closer to homes. president obama will visit a chrysler plant in ohio today as alison burns reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom. the president is celebrating.

allison. >> reporter: that is right. the debate is raising here on capitol hill on whether the government's $80 billion bailout was a bust or success. president obama will hail it as a victory when he visits chrysler assembly line this afternoon. he will say the bailout saved one million jobs and two iconic american companies. his aid says the president's leadership on economy. >> the president took dramatic action. including unpopular decisions like bailing out the auto industry. because he felt it was the right thing to do. >> reporter: ares point out fax payers have so far only gotten back about $40 billion of the $80 billion of the bailout. the white house estimates the loss will be about $14 billion. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns. the ratings agency moodies is warning it will consider

cutting the united states topnotch credit rating if congress does not raise the u.s. debt limit. this is video of are lawmakers on their way to the white house on wednesday to meet with president obama. ares are refusing to vote to increase the limit unless significant spending cuts are part of the legislation. your time now 6:18. a former leader of the black panther party has just died. pratt has died at the age of 63. he died at his home. you are looking at video of him at a court hearing. he spent 27 years in prison for the murder of a schoolteacher but then a judge overturned his conviction years later. pratt always argued the government knew he was innocent. a new walker friendly trail leading to the top of action listentist ridge will be open.

welcome back to the morning news. they are smiling there at the new york stock exchange despite the fact there is the opening bell live. we don't have a lot to smile about as far as the economy goes. out this morning just about exactly one hour ago very disappointing news on the unemployment front. the unemployment rate up to 9.1%. fewer jobs created last month. the weakest reading since september. the biggest reason manufactures effected by the disasters in japan. the reason really is the high price for gas. we are paying more for gas so

are businesses. that is effecting them. looking at the lower part of your screen the dow jones off about 73 points. >> that jobless report caught you off guard. >> it was very surprising. we will smile and say good morning, to you. it is friday, june 3rd i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. time now is 6:30. we have continuing coverage this morning on of the deadly house fire that claimed the life of one san francisco firefighter and left the other critically injured. cal osha crews will be arriving at the scene. we have live team coverage for you this morning. ktvu claudine wong is at san francisco general where a bedside vigil remains for the injured firefighter. but first let's start with ktvu kraig debro. >> reporter: good morning, pam. we moved down the street. we are no longer on berkeley web. we are open the street parallel and down the road. from the outside it looks like

a three-story home but actually you look below that deck there is another story or living space or living room down there. from what we understand that is where the flash over happened. when firefighters do into the building they will punch holes out of the ceiling or home so they can get ventilation. in this case it looks like a cement wall there. firefighters are investigating to see what lead up to the tragic events this morning. we get to hear what firefighters were saying to each other as they begin to realize the severity of the situation. >> engine 20 has activated their emergency response and has not responded for five minutes. do you copy that? >> i copy that. i will look for them right now. >> reporter: this morning police have the house sealed up as they investigate the cause of the fire. 48-year-old vincent perez dies

at a hospital following the fire. the cause of the death is not officially known. you can say perez died on the job while trying to protect others. he's among 35 fires responding to the cause of the house fire around 10:45. a woman and three kids get out of that house on time. all three were caught in a flash over which is a sudden and dramatic increase in the air temperature caused by the ignition of particles in the air opinion firefighters say temperatures can reach 1,000 degrees fahrenheit. perez died later at the hospital. >> i need two companies outside right now. we have a man down coming through the front door. >> we need two more code three ambulances. >> reporter: perez actually was a colleague a classmate of chief joann hayes' wife. she spoke yesterday at the

hospital. very emotional day. as you heard pam mention cal osha is one of the agencies that will be out here. police and fire investigating as well. they are trying to figure out out what lead up to the flash over. we will try to get closer for you coming up on mornings on 2. reporting live in san francisco kraig debro county sha -- ktvu channel 2 news. now let's go to claudine wong. >> reporter: firefighters and police officers have been coming here to san francisco general this morning for the ongoing vigil for firefighter anthony valerio. when they are here they are met with the critical response team. the team that mobilized right after this tragedy. i talked to one member of that team. he talked about the bonds. >> the bonds are incredibly tight.

the fire department has a very strong brotherhood and sister hood. i don't think there is a stronger bond than cops and firemen. something like this brings us closer to together. there is a lot of you know words that don't need to be said but you know just a glance, a look into another firefighters eyes and that says a lot. >> reporter: they drove in and flew in to be by his side. his family is known for his humor. they are surviving this difficult time by leaning on each other and telling him every own -- him over and over that he needs to pull through. >> his lungs are injured. his body snot quite taking as much -- is not taking quite as

tab. time now 6:36. the news broke just 45 minutes ago. dr. jack kevorkian has died because of heart failure. he was 83 years old. he was known around the world as a crew saider over the very emotional battle of assisted suicide. he was named dr. death. he assisted in more than 130 suicides. in 1999 a jury convicted him of second degree murder. he spent eight years in prison. just last year he was a subject of a television movie called you don't know jack. it starred al pa key know. they are hoping to find new leads in this very mysterious case. the 26-year-old student vanished a week ago after leaving kizer hospital in hayward. tonight's rally will be held on pond rosa court. that is where they found her

car a half mile away from the hospital. investigators say they have several persons of interest in this case including one former friend. today the man that pleaded guilty to murdering a woman attending yale university will be sentenced. anne lee was strangled, her body was found on the day she was planning to be married. raymond clark worked out a plea deal. a big announcement is expected today about the ongoing investigation into a police corruption case in contra costa county. four men have been imemploymented. they are accused of stealing and selling drugs seized during police raids. the district attorneys office says it will make a major development announcement in the case later this afternoon. state lawmakers may have to go without a paycheck. john chunk says he will stop

paying lawmakers salaries if they don't meet the deadline. last november voters passed prop 25. it requires lawmakers to forfeit their salaries if the budget deadline isn't met. prop 25 bars them from receiving that back pay. sal, can you help everybody get to where they need to go? >> dave, and pam i will try as we look at the commute. we're not seeing a lot of slow traffic out there. look at 101 james lick freeway san francisco. it looks pretty good here driving up to the lower deck of the bay bridge. there are no more concerns about construction on that lower deck. westbound bay bridge looks okay. it looks like somebody is being pulled over on the very left. they are having a bad friday. let's move along and take a look at the commute. livermore to castro valley looks good. if you are driving from hayward to union city we don't have a lot of slow traffic.

fire in the diamond heights district. anthony valerio is in critical condition. that same fire killed vincent perez. a man is in custody after firing shots at police last night. they found him after a four hour man hunt. police officer fired back but no one was hurt. and we are learning the horrifying details of jaycee dugard's abduction. yesterday the judge released the grand jury transcripts hours after sentencing her two kidnappers. happening right now this morning a little more than an hour ago we learned 54,000 jobs were created in may. that is much fewer than analysts were hoping for. right now we are waiting for

republican members of congress. they are expected to come out and comment. a lot of concerns about the jobless rate. the up employment rate up to 9.1%. people want to hear what washington has to say this morning. charges could be filed today against former presidential candidate john edwards. the grand jury is investigating edwards over money used to keep his mistress in hiding during his 2008 presidential campaign. prosecutors say the hundreds of thousands of dollars that two edwards donors gave should have been considered campaign koa nations and reported. edwards lawyers argue the funds were gifts intended to keep the affair a secret from his late wife elizabeth. a man that was nominated

for a medal that took down a gunman has been fired. that was february 2010 when patrol special officer robert burns shot one of two suspects engaged in a gun battle outside of club suede. the 19-year-old man was killed and three others hurt. on wednesday the police commission decided to revoke burns' badge. the cost of parking may soon be going up in the bay area's largest city. ktvu jade hernandez is joining us live from san jose to tell us this will make a lot of people angry. probably. right jade? >> reporter: yeah a lot of businesses are concerned and worried. there is five city own parking garages that are effected. right now it costs $2.25 to park at this city earned garage

right here. the cost could go up. they want the rate to go up by 25-33% in order to pay for a city garage on fourth street which they still owe $38 million. what that means for drivers here at the parking gang at second and san carlos is the cost to park in the parking spaces it could go up if approved by the san jose city council members. drivers would not only see a hike per day. but when they used to park for weekends and holidays pushing up the cost for parking in a garage would -- it will effect five city owned garages. fourth street garage, market, third street garage, the city hall garage, and this one the second and san carlos. the city does plan to offer an incentive to pay. they will offer diners on nights and weekends longer free

are home here. has there been a rainout in june? i can't remember anything. it's possible as we head into the weekend. especially as we get toward tonight. right now we are starting with mostly clear to partly cloudy. some clouds and low fog up on the north coast. north coast, up in the north bay. turning cloudy. the weekend is really the prime time the updated information comes in in 40 minutes. everything i have seen says light to moderate rain. there is a couple things going on. that is a huge system for this time of year. that has tapped into really impressive amounts of moisture. the low is going to develop right off the coast. it can sit out there for 72 hours before it moved. we have to deal with increasing clouds out ahead of it and maybe what we call over running. the front may not come in until

saturday. right there, there is our system. live storm tracker two. not here yet but it's getting closer. upper 40s to low 60s. napa at 45. livermore 36. san rafael. the front will swing in later on this morning. it could end up farther west if it does. some sun today. more toward the south. less toward the north which is already clouding up. rain likely north bay and on the coast. some of the rainfall projections have been over two inches for north bay and the santa cruz mountains and parts of the peninsula. rain adopting avenues. this could be a real bulls eye for some. increasing clouds show.

continued very cool. south wind and more sunshine. everyone else will have the increasing clouds. if you want to take care of something golf, tennis, do it early. friday should be all right but then rain develops later. rain comes in on saturday. takes it again on sunday. things calm down tuesday. the labor department says only 54,000 jobs were created in may and that is worst than economists expected. enafter a disappointing report earlier in the week prepared them for a job. the private sector hires more than 80,000 new jobs. unemployment rate is 9.1%. everybody worried that this means our economic recovery is losing stream.
