what firefighters are telling each other as they desperately try to save a critically injured man. >> a bedside vigil continues for an injured firefighter who's fighting for his life. he became the face of america's assisted suicide debate. the sad news came just 90 minutes ago. early june and a lot of soccer games, baseball games and professional games might be washed up because of rain. right now mornings on 2. good morning. welcome to mornings on two. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. >> a fire broke out claiming the life of a firefighter of 20

years in of -- years of sssments the investigation is just beginning. they will be at the scene trying to figure out what went wrong. our live team coverage continues this morning. we start with kraig debro live at the scene of the fire. >> reporter: we are a block west of berkeley way. police -- we understand there will be another agency. i'm working on finding out who that is. this is just a three-story house. there's a fourth story below that deck. that's where we believe this flashover occurred that ended up taking the life of one firefighter and critically wounding another. we'll hear what firefighters are saying to one another.

>> we have two critical firefighters. i'm transporting one driving medic 174. >> reporter: 48-year-old lt. vincent perez lost that battle. the cause of death is not officially determined but you can say perez died on the job trying to protect others. another one was injured. they responded to a house call yesterday morning at 10:45. a woman and three children inside got out unhurt. perez and two other firefighters were on the first floor of this four-story building where all three were caught in a flashover. that is a sudden increase in temperatures caused by particles in the air. firefighters said temperatures during flashovers can reach 1,000 degrees fahrenheit. >> he served val yently in the san francisco fire department

for 21 years. he was a classmate of mine. we started off in 1990. >> the world has lost a great man, a great firefighter, lieutenant. >> reporter: it wasn't just friends or chief hayes who went to the fire academy with lieutenant perez. it was other firefighters across san francisco and people who didn't even know him mourning his loss. this morning the investigation is underway. it led to the death of lieutenant perez. if you look at this picture here, you can see from the picture it looks as in the fire began in the second or third floor. apparently firefighters were on that first floor as well. that's where it all started. kraig debro, ktvu news.

injured firefighter anthony valerio is still in the hospital. claudine wong is telling us about the large show of support. >> reporter: the family of anthony valerio says he is never alone. he is on the fourth floor of san francisco general surrounded by firefighters and families. members of the team and san francisco fire department have been here this morning offering support to those who need it in this very difficult time. >> the bonds are incredibly tight. the fire department has a very strong brotherhood and sisterhood. i don't think there's a stronger bond than cops and firemen. something like this brings us even closer together. there's a lot of words that don't need to be said but a

glance, a look in another firefighter's eyes. that says a lot. >> reporter: firefighter anthony valerio is in critical condition suffering from burns. he is on a ventilator and not conscious. he is the oldest of four other children. his family sales he's known for -- says he's known for his human for and they're surviving by leaning on each other and telling him over and over again that he needs to pull through. >> i think it's how he would want us and i think he feels that energy from us being sillily. hopefully, that's helping. >> reporter: this tragedy hitting everyone deeply. er that' praying for valerio while mourning the loss of vincent perez, perez being remembered as a man with a big heart. his loss affecting so many has a brother who's an oakland police

mistress re-- rielle hunter. they say that money should have been considered campaign donations and publicly reported there. is talk of a possible plea deal but if this goes to trial and if edwards is convicted, he would likely face jail time. it was worse than expected news from the federal labor department this morning. only 54,000 new jobs were created during may. that is the lowest number in eight months. many economists had expected fewer than 100,000 new hires but this is much lower than most forecast. taking a live look at the big board on wall street, stocks opening sharply lower. other recent reports show higher gas and food prices have

damperred consumer spending. home price still in a slump. as you can see, the dow down 97. nasdaq is down 18. s&p is down 8. new this morning police in vermont are investigating the death of a college student from berkeley. the body of 18-year-old emily cass sigher was found yesterday in a common area of the dorm where she was living at benington college police are checking into whether alcohol was found. they said empty come containers were found. dr. jack kevorkian has died of heart failure. ce voarian -- ce voarkian was 83 years old. he was known has dr. death believed to have assisted in 130 suicides. in 1999 a jury convicted him of

elmer geronimo pratt has died. this is leader of the former leader of the black panther party during a 1998 court hearing. the 63-year-old passed away yesterday at his home in africa. pratt is best known for spending 27 years in murder before a judge overturned his conviction. pratt said the government knew of his conviction. vice-president joe biden is in the vatican in rome. he met with pope benedict. it was an unannounced meeting. the vice-president is a practicing catholic who also supports abortion rights. now the pope has long insisted that catholic politicians follow the church's teaching on quote, nonnegotiable issues like abortion, which the vatican strongly opposes. concerns are growing around the world about a strain of e.

coli in europe that chinese researchers are calling a super toxic strain. three people who recently traveled to germany are infected with it. in europe 18 people have died so far. more than 2,000 are infected. some governments are limiting imports on vegetables from spain, germany and the netherlands but they have not been able to pinpoint the exact source of it. we're learning the horrifying details of jaycee dugard's 18 years of captivity. yesterday the judge released the transcript hours after sentencing her two kidnappers. dugard said she was walking to the bus stop when a man known as phillip garrido grabbed her and zapped her with a stun gun. garrido dragged her into a car where his wife nancy was waiting and then drove love laughing. that was the start of the little

girl's long sexual abuse nightmare. >> there are specific details, as the court alluded to that are horrendously graphic and i think the court's description was that it's pornographic. >> dugard said show was raped at least once a week until she gave birth to garrido's two daughters and described the home. she said she never once tried to run away in 18 years because she was afraid of phillip garrido's explosive temper. she feared he would pull out his stun gun again or send the dogs to attack her. >> phillip garrido will spend the rest of his life in prison. his wife nancy will probably do the same. she won't be eligible for parole until she's almost 90 years old. jaycee dugard was not in the courthouse but her mother read

ripping down two power lines and crosses an interstate and heads to a high school. this video was recorded by a courthouse surveillance camera. ktvu is getting a look at new mountain lion video. here's a video. look on the right of your screen. a female mountain lion approaching a dead deer in the santa cruz mountains. the project is studying 24 big cats. they're fitted with tracking devices. 50 of them are living in the santa cruz mountains. 50 more are living in an area north of san francisco. the project started in 2007. in palo alto high school students can sleep longer. school officials are pushing back the school start from 7:55

welcome back. we're starting with continuing coverage of that deadly san francisco house fire that killed one firefighter and injured another. 53-year-old anthony valerio is at san francisco general hospital. rescue crews found him unconscious inside a burning home on berkeley way. family members tell us valerio is not breathing on his own and his brother described the scene

in his hospital room. >> it's not for the weak minded, weak stomach. he looks pretty bad, scrapes, burns on his face. he's all bandaged up. >> you can see firefighters forming this very special line in honor of their colleague who died in the fire, lieutenant vincent perez. the house fire in san francisco should have been a routine call but after firefighters entered the home in the diamond heights neighborhood, something went wrong. an emergency alarm sensor went off alerting rescue crews to enter the home. audio recordings revealed what they found. >> i need two companies outside right now. >> we need two more ambulances.

>> it appeared the two firefighters were caught in what's called a flashover, a mix of gases, oxygen and fuel all reaching an ignition point and making possibly the temperature inside the home rise to 1,000 degrees fahrenheit. >> it can happen at any time. there are some warning signs at certain points, but when you're on the interior, it's a lot or difficult to visualize that. generally, you can't see anything anyway. >> the cause of the fire is under investigation. the four people inside at the time of the fire managed to make it out okay. the head of a bay hear nonprofit group that helps children is now charged with child pornography. 46-year-old anthony norris surrendered to fbi agents. they traced his online name spanky to his home computer and

pornographic pictures of children. his organization helps youth groups create artistic murals. he could possibly get 10 years in prison if convicted. >> the man who fired shots at oakland police officers is behind bars. he was captured at 67th and bancroft. it was in that hear that they tried to -- fired at him as they tried to approach him. a suspected criminal who faked his own death more than 20 years ago has been arrested in california. we have pictures of what robert arcieri looked like in the '80s and what this looks like now. he severely beat a woman in her arizona home but then faked his

death during a fishing trip. >> he assumed a new life. the name he chose was frank roman reynolds. he actually got a job, developed a relationship with another woman. >> more than 20 years later police got a tip that arcieri was living in palm springs. when detectives tracked him down he surrendered. state controller john chung says he will stop paying lawmakers' salaries on june 16th if they don't meet the deadline. last november voters passed the proposition that with require lawmakers to forfeit their salaries permanently if the deadline is not met. in the mast lawmakers wouldn't be paid if a budget was late but would later be reimbursed. prop 25 bars them from ever

receiving that back pay. we have new information this morning. it's about the search for missing nursing student michelle lee and it involves reward money. jade hernandez just spoke to a family member. >> reporter: we have new information from michelle lee's family. the reward leading to information has doubled. michelle lee, a nursing student vanished in hayward after getting something from her car. the hayward police department is reviewing surveillance video in the parking garage. they have been eager to find out more information from the cell phone delay that which shows cell phone towers received a ping off of michelle's mobile phone. michelle's cousin told us by phone about 30 minutes ago, the family is ready to step up the search. >> we were do need to increase

it's filled in a little bit. there's a little waiting no problem on the bridge itself. if you are driving soon into the city, that drive should be very nice for you. let's move along and take a look at 237. we have slowing there as well, not as much as a normal day. after that this moves well over to highway 101. this is looking good southbound 101 between novato and san rafael. there's a touch of slowing, nothing to worry b if you're driving along the peninsula, i'd say northbound 101 slow coming out of burlington up to the sfo exit. let's go to steve. we do have increasing clouds. it's going to lead to a cloudy day. temperatures held in check with a lot of 60s, maybe 70s, santa clara valley, especially low fog in the north bay. lots to this system.

it has a long way to go. the key will be where the rain sets up. if you're up in the sierras, you'll be fine. i don't think they'll get anything until sunday night. even sacramento valley san joaquin could hardly see anything at all. heavy rain totals are forecasting. upwards of two inches in the north bay and the santa cruz mountains. we're too close to the window to say it's not going to happen. there could be moderate to heavy amounts. 48 napa, san rafael and santa rosa. there's a lot to the system that's trapped into a tremendous amount of moisture. the front will come in, moderate to heavy rain. the peninsula has missed out, only a few 1/100ths have fallen.

homes or businesses trimmed. oakland hospital will get a makeover. it will have a new nine-story tower that will care for new mothers and their babies as well as as an outpatient clinic. the $668million project will be the largest construction project in alameda history. a bright spot in the local housing area. it's becoming a mecca for housing development. angry words for the baseball player who knocked catcher posey out for the season.

stocks coming back a little bit after some disapointing news that came out just over two hours ago that the jobs report, only 54,000 jobs gained last month, a lot less than expected. if are a looking for a silver lining oil dropped 2%. the dow is currently down 59. nasdaq down 15. s&p is down six. groupon has taken the first step towards going public. it filed for a $750 million initial public offering. this gives the first inside look at the company's finances. it shows groupons had first quarter sales of $645 million but a net loss of $114 million in the first three months of this year. groupon finds meals for the 83 million subscribers. there is no housing bust in at least one east bay community.

explosive growth in the trivalley area is turning dublin into the new center of housing development according to the france business times. developers have permits for 2,000 new single family homes. about half are already under construction and many have sold. developers say sales there have remained strong since there have been few foreclosures, driving down prices. mazda may soon stop producing cars in the u.s. ford and mazda are close to ending their partnership. going their separate ways would mean the end of u.s. production for mazda. the ford plant in flat rock, michigan, currently produces the mazda 6 mid-size sedan. sony says it's still investigating a claim that computer lacquers hit sony

again. these hackers claim they broke into sony's system and found 1 million accounts in plain text. they say they took the information, including names, birthdates, home phone numbers and addresses and put the information on their website. one 84-year-old woman whose name was on the list said all the information posted about her is correct. sony is still restoring service after hackers stole credit card information on 100,000 users. pg&e is running ads apologizing for the deadly san bruno pipeline disaster. a spokesperson is saying not only is the company sorry but a way of admitting needs to regain the public's confidence. the ads will appear in 21 weekly papers. the san bruno explosion killed

eight people and destroyed 38 homes. the san francisco public utilities commission is reporting a possible security breach. it noticed a couple weeks ago that an unsecured server had viruses on it. it stores information like customer's names, addresses and phone numbers. the san francisco public utilities commission is notifying customers whose information was found on that server. a new survey is showing internet users are more worried about businesses checking up on them than the government spying on them. 48% of people over the age of 16 say they're concerned about their privacy when they shop online. however that number is down from 54% who were worried last year. help ended the season for san francisco giants catcher

police in belmont are looking for two men who stole jewelry from a 63-year-old woman's home. police say he approached the

woman in her garage and told her he had to show her something in her backyard. then a different man ran from the home. both suspects left in a car similar to this ford taurus. east palo alto's only bank is set to close. the spokesman said the decision was difficult. it's a business bank not a retail bank. the bank said they were never able to attract business from the neighbors. several groups are still trying to find a way to save the branch. >> family and friends of a yale graduate student said today there will be justice for annie le of placerville. pray monde clark, right there, will probably get a 44-year sentence for killing annie le, she disappeared before her body
