doctors are fighting the save the life of a san francisco firefighter as funeral preparations begin for another, the latest details are ahead. >> the difficulty firefighters ran into fighting this diamond heights fire and the latest into the cal-osha investigation. >> late word on a contract deal that could save the jobs of more than 100 local police officers. details at noon. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now.

this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >> good afternoon, topping our news the city of san francisco is officially in mourning today after the death of a firefighter. a second firefighter remains in the hospital critically injured. flags are flying at half staff at san francisco city hall. a ktvu photographer took this video this morning. mayor ed lee ordered city flags to be lowered in memory of 48- year-old vincent perez, a 20 year veteran of the fire department. the first san francisco firefighter to die in the line of duty in eight years. we have continuing coverage on this house fire, which we first brought to you yesterday at noon with two reports. jade hernandez is at the scene of the fire where investigators arrive this morning but we begin with david stevenson at san francisco general for the latest on a show of support for the firefighter injured. >> reporter: i also want to update you on the funeral preparations for one

firefighter but we just received an update on the condition of the wounded firefighter resting right now on the 4th floor of the hospital. we have learned that anthony boalreadyio was placed on a new breathing machine to stabilize his condition. has been is being rotated to help him with burns. streams of worried firefighters and police officers have come to the hospital all morning to check on him. his brother just about an hour ago told us he is set to be seen by a neuro surgeon later today and his condition is touch and go. >> they are keeping him medically paralyzed in order to help his breathing. if he moves it will injure his breathing, they put him in a bed turned him facing the floor to help relief the pressure of his chest on his lungs so he can take in more oxygen. >> he told us the fire burned so hot at yesterday's blaze it melted the mask on his brother's phase.

his fellow firefighters say they are holding out hope he will survive. >> it is grim, but we are all you know hoping for a miracle, and holding out hope. he is in good shape and that has been helpful to fight this and his family has been at his bedside. >> reporter: preparations are underway to bury his fellow firefighter vincent perez. you can see his fellow firefighters saluting his body. we learned they are meeting with his family to make funeral arrangements. it is unclear when that will

happen. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> as san francisco prays for the survival of one firefighter people are mourning the loss of vincent perez. he was born and raised in the miss district and graduated from reardon high school in 1981, this is his high school yearbook photo. joanne hayes white spoke fondly of his service and their history together. >> he served valiantly in the san francisco fire department for 21 years, he was a classmate of mine. we started out together on april second, 1990. born and raised in san francisco, a very proud san franciscan. >> the world just lost a great man. a great firefighter. >> one of perez's friends supplied this photo that shows perez on vacation, which is something they looked forward to doing again this year. he was unmarried and took care

of his mother. two of his brothers are police officers. investigators are on the scene of that house fire right now. jade hernandez is there also and joins us live to explain what investigators are doing at this hour. jade. >> reporter: the hall may have heiden the intensity of the fire. the home looked like a two story house but in the back thursday's fire burned so strong they may not have realized how involved it was. the second picture shows names at the bottom right of your screen. first arriving firefighters would not have seen this angle but the neighbor who provided them to us immediately snapped picture of what he new looked out of control. news chopper 2 shows the scene after the fire broke out. firefighters have had trouble in the past fighting flames in the diamond heights neighbor,

mainly due to construction, a firefighter was killed in 1985 after becoming trapped by a garage door and succumbing to flames. today they came to take pictures, he told our crews he still needs to interview the fire captain who was on scene and he will try to determine whether was faulty. >> we want to make sure they have the proper equipment and have it properly worn, whether it was defect defective or not and whether they followed procedures. i generally go to the scene and just investigate the surroundings. >> reporter: several members of the fire department command staff came out to see the scene, others showed their support for one another. there is still no word on what caused this fire so the investigation is not over. >> at the channel 2 website ktvu.com, you will fund continuing coverage of the deadly fire, including more video and interviews with the

firefighter's family and friends from last night's vigil, look for the bay area news tab. you might feel like you hoof heard this before but really don't put that umbrella away. our ktvu weather department says there is more rain on the way this afternoon and through the weekend. right now, this is a live picture of the bay bridge looking towards san francisco. looks pretty cloudy there. rosemary oraseco will be here to tell us when the rain will arrive and how long it will stick around. police and city officials reached an agreement which could save the jobs of 156 police officers. the deal includes a 10% reduction in compensation, which will save the city almost $13 million. it also allows the city to outsource policing at the airport. negotiations will continue on pension reform and sick leave payouts to help close the city's $115 million budget

deficit. the agreement still needs to be approved by rank and file officers. a major announcement is expected today in a conspiracy and police corruption probe, in contra costa county. they are accused of stealing and selling drugs, seized during police raids. today's announcement will be from the district attorney's office. so far the d.a. has not told the defense attorneys but the new development. >> my best guess, though, is that the federal government will be taking over the prosecution of all the police officers involved in this particular case. >> michael cardozza, who respects norman wells, says he believes the feds will bring public corruption and drug selling charges against the officers. former senator around two time presidential candidate john edwards appeared in federal court today in north

carolina after being indicted by a grand jury. the jury was investigating money used to cover up his affair with his mistress. prosecutors say two of edwards donors gave more than 900,000 dollars to help keep the affair a secret from his wife elizabeth, who died of cabser in december. they contend the money should have been considered campaign donations. edwards entered a not guilty plea to the charges. his lawyers say the money was a gift and not taken from campaign contributions. ahead we got late word this morning about the death of a former tv star that almost everyone may recognize. and we will tell you what happened when the daughter of the suspect in the beating of a giants fan talked to police. and rosemary is tracking the ran moving toward the bay area, she is ahead with details on exactly when it will arrive this afternoon. also -- >> they have the resources, they have the people and they showed concern. >> the family of a missing

the family of missing nursing student michelle lee is calling on the fbi to get

involved in the search for her. she disappeared one week ago to retrieve something from her white suv. the vehicle was found locked a few blocks away. michelle's cousin explained on mornings on 2 why the family wants the fbi involved. >> it is a national reach kind of organization. they have the resources. they have the people and they showed concern. and i think it is just going to be really important to have them on our side and we really appreciate their interest. >> they plan a vigil tonight near where her car was found at ponderosa court and olive drive. a 26-year-old lab technician at yale university was sentenced this morning to 44 years in prison for killing a graduate student from northern california. raymond clark the third pleaded guilty in march to murder and attempted sexual assault in the

2009 death of annie lay from placerville. he apologized during the sentencing. she disappeared and 5 days later her body was found behind a wall in the university lab on the same day she was to have been married. >> dr. jack kervorkian died of heart failure this morning. he was 83. he was known around the world as a crusader in the emotional battle over suicide. nicknamed dr. death, he is believed to have taken part in more than 130 suicides, he was convicted in 1999 of second- degree murder and spent eight years in prison. just last year he was the subject of a tv movie called you don't know jack, staring al pacino. an investigation into the officer-involved shooting of a man guarding an illegal marijuana operation in santa clara county was legally justified. this is the word about the killing of 26-year-old jose soto last june.

sheriff's deputies were investigating a marijuana patch in a remote area near the border and he suddenly appeared with a rifle. officers say they fired when he pointed the rifle at them. he was also holding another object that turned out to be a knife. the prime suspect in a beating outside a giant's fan may have an alibi. his daughter told police yesterday her father was with her on that day in march. they are looking at video of the girl leaving lapd with her mother. the mother asked not to be identified and says the girl wanted to tell her story to police. >> my reaction she was upset when she saw the first newscast and she was just like mom can i go talk to them and let them know my dad was not there. he was with me sleeping all day. >> police believe they have prove ramirez was there but they cannot reveal what it was yet. ramirez is expected to be charged with attacking giants fan bryan stowee at the

stadium. he remains in serious condition. the house today adopted a measure to prevent president obama from using forces in libya without congressional approval. the measure by the speaker john boehner is none binding. it says he has failed to have a rationale to aid the forces. the white whitehouse says it is unnecessary. it bars action except to rescue members and it says provide congress with the scope of the mission and its cost within 14 days. president obama is telling auto workers today that even though the economy is growing we are still facing tough times. >> just like if -- if you had a bad illness. if you got hit by a -- by a truck, you know, it is going to take a while for you to mend and that is what has happened to our economy. it is taking a while to mend. >> he made those comments

during a vest to a visit to a chrysler plant in ohio. just recently gm, chrysler and ford, all reported significant increases in sales. actor james arness has died. he was a world war ii veteran and the older brother of the late actor peter graves. james arnecessary died of natural causes at 88 years old. paying to park in downtown san jose could cost more starting next month. the city council will consider a plan to raise rates as much as 33% at the 5 public garages breathed by the city. the proposal calls for eliminating free parking on weekends and holidays. merchants say that will drive away customers who are starting to come down town to ntown to

we are still waiting it. it will sink south and park itself there. take a look at the forecast here, mostly gray, by 5:00 light rain in the forecast maybe in time for the evening drive home. could be soggy, could be wet and slippery. in the overthiet hours it intensifies. tomorrow morning we wake up with just a steady rain. could be heavy at times. takes all day before we finally break away to scattered showers. 6:00 in the afternoon here finally seeing a break. come sunday again the center of circulation of that system, most unstable weather going to swing through california on sunday. scattered showers and our best possibility of maybe thunderstorms in the afternoon. still dealing with scattered showers all the way until sunday night. it looks like by monday morning the center of the storm will be over the sierra and we will dry out. for today mostly cloudy, the rain arrives later today although i showed you a few sprinkles already on the map. for the weekend how much rain will we see? 1 to 2 inches for most of the

bay area, 2 to 4 inches for some of the higher elevations and our temperature chilly for this time of year, 64 in napa, 62 in oakland, upper 50s along the coastline, 64 san mateo, 68 san jose, 68 degrees los gatos, the weekend here, i guess any -- any weekend is a good weekend tori but it is just going to be one to be indoors and hopefully if you are outdoors you made a plan b because it is going to be a wet one all the way through monday, tuesday we dry out and warm up just a bit. >> all right and still cool also. >> rightt. which is strange, having to bubble up and cover up. >> snow levels above 6000 feet for this year. >> wow, all right. thank you rosemary. >> sure. >> a new map can show you the crime hot spots in your neighborhood. they use police department data to map out crime in several different cities. in san francisco the map shows the most dangerous neighborhoods are south of market, the tenderloin, the mission and civic center. assaults and thefts are the

most common crimes. the website will be updated as frequently as information comes in from the police department. oakland mayor gene kwan is drumming up support for the aids walk. we just got comments into the mayor from our newsroom. >> especially though its not longer a death sentence it is still a painful and difficult disease. >> this is the fifth year for the fund-raising walk. it goes to non-profit groups that provide service for people with hiv or aids. it begins on the north lead of the lake at the bandstand. profootball fans will be closely watching what happens in a federal courtroom in st. louis today. nfl players and owners will both appear in a hearing that could have a big impact on this year's season. the players are asking the court to end the lockout. the owners want to keep the players off the job until they reach a deal on a new contract.

a live look at the big board on wall street, numbers right now kind of in the middle range for the day. they were down 150 at the opening and due to the unemployment rate news, more on that in a moment, then the market erased some of its losses following a positive report on the service industry and news that greece will get more help managing its debt. selling has continued toward the end of the trading dow, the dow currently down 102 at 12,146. getting to the jobs report the news was worse than expected this morning from the federal labor department. it announced only 54,000 new jobs were created during may. that is the lowest number in eight months. many economists had expected fewer than 100,000 new highers but that number was lower than most had forecast. the jobless rate is now at 9.1%, which is up 110th from
