loss of 53-year-old anthony la layer yo who died this morning -- valerio died this morning. we have the live story from the victim's fire station with the outpouring of support. >> reporter: this is station 26 which went today from mourning one firefighter to 400ing two. there's a growing memorial inside -- mourning two. there's a growing memorial inside the station for firefighter anthony valerio all paying tribute to the men killed by thursday's fire. the body of firefighter tony valerio was escorted out of san francisco general hospital on a cold dreary day. >> today we grieve the loss of another firefighter. >> reporter: news of valerio's death two days after the fire that also killed his colleague vince perez has devastated the department all over again. >> it is particularly difficult. you're mourning the loss of one and then to have another one

very close from the same fire is challenging for us. it's painful for us, but we will be strong. >> reporter: the chief inside her 21 year career no other fire has killed more than one firefighter. valerio's parents were too upset to speak, but his brother and sister remembered him lovingly. >> he was full of life. he traveled. he was great to two of my kids. he was my best brother ever. >> he had a great sense of humor. whenever we had a family function, we would all travel and figure out, okay, when he arrives, will he be wearing shorts, will his legs be shaved? was he going to be wearing shoes or flip-flops? >> reporter: these deaths clearly took their toll on the medical personnel who struggled to save the men. doctors say their injuries were too much to overtime. >> you have to understand when he came in he was in full cardiac arrest. the last 48 hours was really a blessing so that the family, the friends, firefighters could be with him.

>> reporter: a flag draped over valerio's body is the same one he held in that last photo. it also flew here at station 26 and two people just walked up with flowers to bring in his honor. live in san francisco. i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the two fallen firefighters will be honored this friday with a joint funeral in san francisco. services are scheduled to be held at st. mary's cathedral in the city. valerio's family tells ktvu channel 2 news it plans a separate memorial paddle-out to spread his ashes. valerio was an avid surfer. no date or location has been sit yet. the investigation into the -- set yet. the investigation into the fatal fire is in its third day and will continue through the night. we have the story live from san francisco and diamond heights where the loss of this second firefighter is felt there as well. >> reporter: here on berkeley way there's an engine and fire personnel still outside the house you can see. investigators have been inside

all day. this inquiry is especially painstaking now that two men have died. engines navigate the same narrow road they raced up thursday morning. now the pace to this road is somber and deliberate to find out why two beloved and veteran firemen died here. >> so far we looked at everything was done textbook. just like the book it was going perfect and then the thing blew, reached that temperature and blew and nothing you could do. >> reporter: so far nothing unusual jumps out about the house or its contents except that two stories are street level and two are below grade. so heat can funnel into the kind of fireball that flashed over. >> it is a time now to feel -- >> reporter: the chief said answers will emerge in weeks, maybe a month. >> what's extremely difficult for success that this was a single family dwelling. it was not a high rise. it was not something that one

would typically expect to lose people over. >> hope they come out with what everybody wants to know, what happened. >> reporter: those living near the charred home reflect it could have been any of their households calling 911 that morning. >> it's just a cloud of sadness on the whole street and the whole neighborhood and just so many trucks coming in and so many people and you can just feel the heaviness. >> reporter: the homeowners who fled the burning house were here today briefly pulling some possessions out. it's a family of four, mom, two kids and a grandmother, long time residents and well liked and said to be, of course, devastated by the tragic loss of life here. reporting live in san francisco, debra vialon, ktvu channel 2 news. we're less than three weeks away from summer, but we're still ensemble watch tonight. today's unseasonable -- on storm watch tonight. today's unseasonal weather causing problems for people all over the bay area. in santa rosa the wind and rain

apparently were so strong they knocked over a tree causing it to fall on that suburban. fortunately no one inside was hurt. just north of there on fran keck avenue fire crews used chainsaws and ropes to clear the remains of another large tree knocked down by the storm. the east bay got its share of strong showers. this was the scene on piedmont avenue in oakland where shoppers grabbed their umbrellas before heading outside. >> the start to june has been a wet one with the rainfall already setting records for the month. we have the latest numbers for you and where it's raining right now. >> the totals for today would be pretty impressive for a storm any time of year, but especially for june. we broke quite a few records and are still compiling the numbers, but so far i can report some of the numbers from napa% s, oakland and -- napa, san francisco, oakland and sfa.

look at san francisco over an inch of rain, oakland down teen nearly 1 1/2 inches and san jose at .88 and likely a few more records as we get the information. the maps right now on live stormtracker 2, the activity has been on the decrease across parts of the bay area, but we have some intense cells right around vallejo to benicia and right around martinez there's heavier downpours to report and that will be the case for tonight with off and on rain showers possibly heavy at times. the system i have been tracking finally track inland for tomorrow. i'll highlight shower chances and thunderstorm chances for the second half of the weekend. organizers of the union street festival don't want to hear about more rain. the festival is carrying on this year and the street fair is wet and dry at the same time. >> reporter: before kahn vendors were setting up booth -- dawn vendors were setting up booths at the festival hoping the rain would clear.

>> we will certainly be sampling a lot of our products. so people should come down. >> reporter: the street fair usually draws large crowds checking out live music and eating their way from one end of union street to the other. this year most of the chairs were empty. vendors and restauranteurs who paid several hundred to several thousand dollars to be here were hoping customers would show up despite the weather. >> we certainly would like to see people come out if they could. >> it's right in front of my house, but yeah, 10 minutes to get ready and came down. >> reporter: it wasn't just the restauranteurs. the street vendors were eager to take every dollar visitors were willing to spend. >> 20 and this was 45, the little book. >> reporter: so you are spending money. >> yeah. >> reporter: the weather is just one issue facing the 35th union street festival. this year's festival is also dry. the usual beer garden gone in an effort to widen the appeal of the festival. >> yeah. definitely more family

friendly. we are trying to get back to the roots of the union street festival where you could walk around and have fun, not worry with people getting too drunk. >> reporter: there are plenty of free non-alcoholic options this year. this year's alcohol ban is an experiment organizers say. after the festival they'll evaluate and see whether or not they want to bring the booze back. this wet weather including a live radar picture of where you live, you can visit www.ktvu.com and click on the storm watch tab. pg&e is not sure whether all that rain a played a part in a large power outage in oakland today. the trouble started around 7 a.m. with an equipment failure under franklin street in the downtown area. 1,300 customers lost electricity. repair crews were sent out to look at the problem. pg and e says power was restored to everyone affected by 1:00 this afternoon. students atlas lomas high school and walnut creek are dealing with the deaths of two former students just three

months after two high school juniors died while rafting. 18-year-old christian bishop and 20-year-old maurice waters were killed in a crash east of sacramento early friday morning. officers say the 26-year-old driver of the car they were riding in ran a red light and lost control plunging down an embankment east of sacramento killing himself and the two former students. at this hour oakland detectives are interviewing people in east oakland where a man was killed during a wreck in the rain this afternoon. officers were called to the 2100 block of high street around 2:30 this afternoon. they found a man shot to death apparently while he was working on his car. it's not clear if the unidentified man lives in the area. police have not released suspect information at this time. police in oakley now are investigating that city's second homicide of the year. investigators say a 21-year-old man was shot early this morning in a city car next to o'hara park middle school. it's on o'hara avenue. police were called to that

scene around 4:00 this morning. police are not releasing the name of the victim at this point. they say he was standing with a group when a gunman approached and then opened fire. it is not clear if he was the intended victim. another homicide in san jose, this time the victim a 44- year-old man. police say the man was standing with another man in front of a home in the 100 block of birch lane last night when someone opened fire around 11 p.m. both were taken to the hospital where one of them was pronounced dead. the other man was treated for non-life threatening injuries. no word on a motive or a suspect. this is the city's 25th homicide this year. in all of last year there were just 20 homicides in san jose. the clock is ticking on a new state law, you have to have one of these in your house and it's not a smoke detector. in arizona it's a double dose of trouble for firefighters trying to contain two large wildfires, why crews are finding it difficult to get an upper hand. and take a look at this, how the wild weather played a

taking a live look right now at san francisco's fire station 26 where you can see the flags there flying at half staff. the house lost two of its own this week with the passing this morning of firefighter anthony valerio. fellow firefighter vince perez died thursday. both were fighting that house fire in the city's diamond heights neighborhood when they were caught in a flash of flames. a third firefighter was injured but treat expected released. it is known as the silent killer, but according to one study 90% of you don't have the tools in your home needed to detect it. ktvu' mike mibach tells us

about a new law to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. >> reporter: a home appliance store in san francisco from hammers to paint, washers and driers, cabinets and sinks, the auctions are unlimited. what's the civic product being pushed today? they're carbon monoxide detectors and have to be inside your home by july 1st and statewide all because of senate bill 183. >> we didn't know about the carbon monoxide one. >> most people don't think about anything that has to do with science. >> reporter: most people don't seem to know about california's new carbon monoxide prevention law that requires all single family homes to have a detector installed by the end of the month. >> carbon monoxide is a silent killer. it's a completely odorless colorless gas. >> reporter: at this lowe's in san francisco larry kuhn of first alert teamed up with cal fire to educate homeowners about the new law. >> it takes a tragedy for the

awareness to be created and it's nice the state has pro actively put it out there. >> reporter: carbon monoxide poisoning kills 480 people a year and sends 20,000 people to the emergency room across the nation. >> actually that's why i made sure my house was equipped probably about 15 years ago. >> reporter: now it's time to put it in your house? >> yeah. i think. so. >> reporter: now fire officials say it's time to put one in yours. in san francisco mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. in news of the world tonight in yemen president ali abadie saleh has reportedly left -- ali abdullah saleh has reportedly left the country. a ceasefire is in place mace between the government and tribal leaders and reformers demanding saleh's ouster. in libya aerial attacks have been carried out against moammar gadhafi's forces.

nato says the helicopters allow them to get close to ground targets for pinpoint strikes. until now nato attacks have been carried out by cruise missiles and jets flying at higher altitudes. long time diplomat lawrence eagleberger died today. he served briefly as secretary of state and under the first president bush. eagle berger was a protegee of henry kissenner. he had three sons all of whom he named lawrence. when asked why he said ego. lawrence eagle berger was 80 years old. in arizona a double dose of trouble for firefighters who are working to contain two of the largest fires in the state's history. the larger of the two fires is in apache county and has now scorched 120,000 acres. 2,000 people have been evacuated and at least six vacation cabins have been destroyed but no homes burnt so far. right now there is no containment firefighters say

and that low humidity and 30- mile an hour winds are making firefighting efforts there very difficult. >> time now to ask meteorologist the question -- our meteorologist the question we've all been wondering, when is it going to end? >> we're getting closer but still a few rain clouds to contend with in the bay area. right now on my stormtracker 2 this is the loop moving from north av it moved from the south and -- after it moved from the south to the north. right now the heavier cells are closer to right around just to the north of concord around benicia and martinez. latest imagery, this is moving north and the heaviest cells at least in this sector from vallejo to benicia to martinez. those yellow cells do correspond to heavier downpour. that will be a factor at least in the short term over the next two to three hours, but the rest of the bay area seeing quite a bit of a break with a few spotty showers but for the most part partly to mostly cloudy skies. rainfall totals over the past

24 hours, very impressive. you can see the numbers, over an inch of rain for san francisco and oakland. look at kenfield 1.63 and look at the santa cruz mountains with that southwesterly flow in place. they picked up nearly 3 inches of rain. 2.92 is the report over the past 24 hours. for tonight we have mostly cloudy skies, a chance of a shower, tomorrow clouds and sun with some scattered showers and then the extended forecast. i think this is what we're waiting for, a dry weather apparent and warming temperatures. this is actually a beautiful storm with the satellite perspective. you can see the circulation offshore. that will be the key factor as we do head into sunday. the big question all week long was where was the storm center going to move? you can see the eventual track closer to monterey and big sur, but it's close enough to the bay area that wrap-around moisture will send in a few clouds, showers and the possibility of a thunderstorm. so for tomorrow sun/cloud mix, scattered showers. it's not going to be a washout. we'll have sunshine, some

clouds moving in and maybe a few showers developing during the afternoon hours and there is a chance of an isolated thunderstorm. here we go, now i'll have to show you for tonight and even tomorrow morning, but then you'll see the clouds build in and there's a few spotty light showers pushing into the region moving in from the south heading north. so we'll have to keep an eye to the sky over the next 24 hours. tomorrow morning 7:00 scattered clouds, low to mid-50s. by 12 clock the chance of a shower and we will -- 12:00 the chance of a shower and we will have a few scattered showers to talk about by 3:00, temperatures mainly in the upper 50s to upper 60s. san mateo 64, san jose 68. there is a slight chance of a shower into monday morning, but they'll quickly taper off the rainfall potential and finally should i promise this? tuesday, wednesday, thursday more sunshine and temperatures warming up. >> we'll hold you to it anyway. thank you. drivers in the north bay may have seen a rather unusual sight today.

it is what you think, a highway patrol officer and another man pushing a porta-potty across highway 101 near downtown santa rosa. officers say the porta-potty was blown by strong wind gusts right out of the bed of the man's pickup truck. the two got it across the highway safely and it was lifted back into the truck with no problems. walnut creek is holding its annual art and wine festival this weekend, but the wet weather made for a pretty tough time. some people braved the weather but walked away disappointed. not all the events be held in the heavy rain. >> we came out to see the music and it got canceled, too. the electricity, i guess, they can't get on the stage. we got a quick bite and we'll head on back, hopefully come back tomorrow. >> the festival continues until 7:00 tonight and then again tomorrow from 11:00 in the morning till 6:00 in the evening. there was a steady rain coming down on the cop doctor costa county fair in antioch -- in the contra costa county fair

in antioch this morning. the midway was wet and puddled and mostly empty this morning, but we hear more people trickled in later in the day. the fair is still going on this hour and will remain open until 11:00 tonight. the fun there continues tomorrow and everyone is hoping for blue skies. it was a wild finish in boston as the a's take on the red sox. but first custodians in oakland teach the lesson of paying it forward, how they're helping some students plan for a better future. >> www.ktvu.com complete bay area news coverage.

it's all smiles in oakland today when 11 students were awarded scholarships for their hard academic work. the money was raised by a group of oakland school janitors who held raffles and other events throughout the year to raise $10,000. >> this means a lot, especially being a resident of west oakland and my son being acknowledged and he's only in preschool. it's an awesome thing. >> they helped me do my research and books that i need for college. >> this is the first year for the custodian scholarship program. the janitors tell us they're already gearing up for next year. >> congratulations to all of them. fred joins us now.

boy, it's a real boston marathon in -- frank joins us now. boy, it's a real boston marathon. >> it took them five hours and 17 minutes today, but they only accomplished extending their losing streak to five. looked like another run of the mill loss in fenway park today. jonathan papelbon tied the game. there's conor jackson, look at that shot to single. it's suddenly 7-7. boston has been hot as a team lately but papelbon is a plain old hot head. he gets ejected for arguing with the home plate umpire and boston catcher jason varitek was already given the heave-ho. so oakland thought hey, maybe we have the momentum but boston wins it in the bottom of the 14th. a's pitcher guillermo moskos co gives up two. 9--- moscoso gives up two.

9-8 your final. giants starter madison baumgartner lost just one earned run of seven to colorado with this r.b.i. single. troy tulowitzki scores eric young. he gets thrown out at the end of the inning but the run counts, 2-0 rockies. it was cody ross bobblehead day today at at&t park. cody responds with a solo home run but the giants fall 2-1 to the rockies. china is celebrating its first ever tennis grand slam champion today. 29-year-old li na needed just two sets to beat the defending champion of the french open, francesca schiavone. now li na becomes the first chinese tennis player male or female to win a grand slam event 6-4, 7-6 your final. over 64,000 fans came to foxboro massachusetts to see usa play spain in a friendly
