new details on this investigation. first, let's give you a look right now. you can see this is still a very active investigation. we've been watching it in just the last five minutes. dusting that red van, looking for fingerprints and trying to collect evidence out here. they will be doing more searching, now that it is daylight, looking for evidence into what they are calling a heinous crime here in east palo alto. the mother and father are recovering from bullet wounds. the shooting happened at 12:50 this morning. we've just learned two children inside the van, the assailants opened fire, hitting the 2- month-old baby boy, his mom and dad. the family then sped away, finally stopping in palo alto. investigators are looking for anyone who witnessed this shooting, or anyone who knows

anything about it. >> we're looking for anything at this point. whether it's an eyewitness, or a second hand witness, we'll take anything at this point and sort out of information that we get. >> reporter: if we turn to our right over here, we can see this home over here. we've learned investigators are going to be looking at this home. looking for any evidence into again, what they're calling a heinous crime, the victim in this case, a 2-month-old baby boy. the mother and father still recovering. again, investigators here looking for a lot of information, and trying to solve this case as quickly as possible. live in east palo alto. a joint funeral service will be held friday at st.

maries cathedral in the city. they respond today a fire on thursday in the diamond heights area, when something went wrong. perez died that day. valerio was in critical condition for two days and died yesterday. his colleagues on the side, absoluted the man they served with, -- saluted the man they served with. this is the first time since 1946 two san francisco firefighters died after responding to the same call. >> we will be strong. we are a family, and we'll be here to support one another, but i think numbness. a lot of disbrief right now. we're going to get through it. >> he would want all of you to remember him as that happy person, always telling jokes and just living life. that's what he did.

ktvu.com and clicking on the sf firefighter tab. oakland police are investigating an overnight shooting that sent three men to the hospital. police have not released details on the shooting, but we do know one of the victims is undergoing surgery. the other two men were taken to the hospital and are said to be stable. there are no suspects in custody. crime tapes on the scene where the man was shot execution style. it happened around 2:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon on high street near fleming. someone apparently shot the man three times in the head, while he was working on his car. the victim's identity has not yet been rereeled, and there's no word on a motive or any suspect in this case. pg and e will start testing a natural gas pipeline in newark today. the tests were originally scheduled for may 31 but were

delayed. it involves removing the natural gas, filling the pipe with water and seeing if it leaks. the one mile section of pipeline runs between cedar boulevard and cardev street and can chapman avenue. parts of that area are closed as part of the effort to test 150 miles of pipeline that has similar of the same characteristics and age of the pipeline that exploded last year in san bruno. a live look over the bay. a little sunshine poking through. that sunshine could bring us, or help to bring us the possibility of thunderstorms in the afternoon. so we're dealing with partly sunny skies outside our door this morning, we will have more sunshine for today. scattered showers in the forecast, we know what that means right, not the steady downpour we saw yesterday afternoon, but hit or miss throughout the day. areas around danville, reporting light rain at this

time, perhaps concord, and stretching east into livermore and to tracy. areas around vallejo, along i- 80, you'll find some of that, as we sift over to the north bay. these thousanders moving now from the south to the east, and the satellite and radar gives you a good idea of what's going on here. the low still off the coast. 2 to had 3á hundred miles offshore month ray, as we've been talking about it, this is going to shift east for today, as it moves across california, it's going to bring us very unstable weather. the scattered showers will continue. these are going to move inland over the course of the afternoon. rain and snow expected for the sierra today, with advisories later. the rest of us, the north bay, goes to see the scattered

chainsaws and rope just to be able to clear that road. stormy weather knocked a tree onto a parked suburban. no one was inside the car, and no one was hurt. two large wildfires are threatening several small communities in arizona this morning. it has grown to more than 218 square miles and is 0% contained. right now, many wildland firefighter crews are clearing brush near homes and spreading brush to protect nearby communities. dozens of families were told to evacuate. as the smoke and flame grow larger. the wall of fire is arizona's third largest wildfire in state history. firefighters are also trying to contain another large fire that has learned at least 140 square miles in southern arizona. outgoing u.s. defense secretary, robert gates is still in afghanistan.

he visited with u.s. troops in kandahar city. he said afghans must do more to protect their country. gates also said the recent death of osama bin laden could open an opportunity for peace in the country. >> our hope is that because of his personal relationship with mullah omar that his death will lead to a weakening of that relationship, and perhaps the taliban's willingness to walk away from the, from al-qaeda. and disavow them. leon pinetta is one step closer to succeeding him. he served as chief of staff to

the wind picked up so much, the inflated bounce houses left the ground, as you saw. several children were inside when they floated up, and then crashed back down. 13 people were treated for minor injuries. four people are dead and several ours are hurt after is ray will he forces opened fire -- israeli forces opened fire. it is the anniversary of the air of defeat in the 1967 middle east war, and thousands of security forces had mobilized for possible border unrest. the u.s. has apparently taken down another top al-qaeda leader. a u.s. missile streak killed him on friday. he is suspected of planning several attacks, including the 2008 siege in mumbai, india. pakistani officials admit they're not 100% sure if he is dead, and they can't seem to

find his body. a violent attack at yemen's presidential palace left behind damage, including a huge hole in the wall and scattered debris and broken glass. tribal rivals are being blamed for the destruction, the attack injured president aali abdullah. a japanese utility says it plans to transport more radioactive water into temporary storage today. it is the latest attempt to prevent the contaminated water from spilling into the ocean following the earthquake and tsunami three months ago. tokyo electric power company plans to put the radioactive water into storage.

the death toll is rising from gnaw e. coli strain that first appeared in germany last month. more than 2,000 people are sick, including several here in the united states. hospitals in northern germany say they are overwhelmed as they struggle to provide enough beds for people sickened but the outbreak. some health inspectors believe it can be traced back to a festival attended by 1.5 million people in the port city of lubeck, one month ago. new hope that a prince can help prevent breast cancer in some women. the drug could prevent breast cancer from occurring in the first place, and women considered high risk. it has already been approved to treat the disease. now this is providing new hope for prevention. people in san francisco likely noticed a huge red

ribbon sitting on top of san francisco's twin peaks. it's been there since last month to help mark the 30th anniversary of the first a.i.d.s. case in the city. 30 yearsing a 20d, years ago today, the a.i.d.s. epidemic first started when a feds report was released. we'll talk with a doctor who served at san francisco's health developer in 1981. ceo steve jobs on medical leave since january will make a brief appearance. jobs is expected to introduce apple's icloud computing service, that will allow users to store their information on the internet, instead of on a hard drive. nintendo says it was the recent target of a data attack.

no customer or company information was lost. a nintendo incident is considered to be minor compared to the rival attack on sony. that compromised the data of more than 100 million user accounts. sony is dealing with another security breach. this time, hackers claim they've stolen more than 100 names and passwords from sony's european database. and then published them to the internet. there was another attack on thursday, when a group of hackers compromised the information of more than a million customers of sony pictures entertainment. these are the latest in a series of attacks that started back in april. the website of a major terrorist organization has also been attacked, the message on the site, and when this small town cupcake shack had to do with it all. partly sunny skies over the bay area this morning. how much rain before this storm finally pulls out, and when can we expect a warmer, drier

>> east alto police are investigating on how the baby became to be an innocent victim of violence. >> reporter: you can see that a half hour ago, there were evidence technicians out here. now there are just officers. those officers going door-to- door, looking for any potential witnesses. still looking for evidence at this point in what they're calling a heinous crime. >> completely unacceptable, and we're not going to stand for this. >> reporter: investigators confirmed to me this morning, the deceased victim in this case is a 2-month-old infant boy. his mother and father are recovering from bullet wounds. east palo alto police say the shooting happened at 12:50 this morning, as the family was leaving a baby shower. the two men in hoodies approached the minivan with the mother and father and two children inside. the two suspects opened fire,

hitting the 2-month-old boy, his mom, and dad. the suspects we're hearing, took off on foot. the family sped away in their minivan. the 2-month-old baby boy was pronounced dead. now investigators are looking nor anyone who witnessed this shooting, or anyone who knows anything about it. >> we're looking for any witnesses, who may have witnessed it, or we're looking for any witnesses who may have seen anything, heard anything, or even heard about this happening, and may have any kind of information, we'll take anything at this point. >> reporter: we're also hearing that investigators are going to be searching this abandoned home here at this point investigators also still looking for a motive in this case. trying to figure out what was the reason behind this shooting. and again, as we told you before, investigators now going door-to-door talking with witnesses. we actually spoke with a neighbor in the neighborhood, and we'll tell you what that neighbor had to say coming up

in the next half hour. a joint funeral service will take place this week for the two san francisco firefighters killed in the line of duty. a service for anthony valerio, and vincent perez will be held at st. mary's cathedral in san francisco. they spoomed today a fire -- responded thursday to a fire in the diamond heights area. perez died that day. >> firefighters at station 26 have set up a poignant memorial to remember their two colleagues. the gear of both is arranged on two chairs in the lobby. outside, a black sash is draped on the balcony. members of the public have been stopping by to leave flowers

and notes. the investigation continues. investigators are working round- the-clock to determine what happened. >> within a couple of days, they will let us know what happened. >> at this point, investigators believe a flashover could be responsible for the death. that's when everything ignites, reaching temperatures to 1,000 degrees. the design of the home is also looked at as a factor. >> police in concord are investigating a spike in thefts at a local cemetery. police say thieves may have stolen metal vaseses looking for an easy source of scrap metal. investigator have not revealed any suspects, but some believe a nearby homeless camp may be part of the problem. >> it just shows how desperate people are these days. they'll go that low to steal

from grave sights, bottom line. >> the employees have started to make nightly rounds at the cemetery. medical examiners are working to identify human remains that were discovered in a shallow ditch. the remains are not been identified, sheriff deputies do not believe they're linked to the case of the 26-year-old missing nursing student, michelle lee. this morning, the search continues for michelle lee. she was last seen at kaiser hospital in hayward on may 27 at 7:00. surveillance cameras show lee's white honda suv driven out of the parking lot. the driver is not visible. police say the last signal from her cell phone was picked up midday last saturday. the reward for information in the case is now $45,000. jurors in the chauncey bailey murder trial will resume

deliberation tomorrow. two men are accused of killing the oakland journalist, and two other men. the homicide rate in the bay area's largest city is going up again, after more weekend violence. it happened around 11:00 friday night near birch lane and avenue b in san jose. police have not released their names or said if either lived at the home. the shooter has not been caught. this is the 23rd homicide of the year. san jose police are investigating. the city has seen 25 homicides in 2011. there were just 20 homicides in san jose in all of last year. we're learning new information this morning in a deadly shooting near an oakley middle school. we know the victim is a 20-year- old man. police say he was shot yesterday morning in a city park next to o'hara middle

school. police sai say the victim was standing with a group when a gunman approached and opened fire. vallejo will soon have a new tool to fight the growing problem of prostitution. two surveillance cameras have gone up, in what the city is calling the prostitution zone. the cameras are installed along sonoma boulevard, and are expected to be in operation next week. money for the cameras came from two sources. an anonymous donor and the police department budget. a special election will be held on tuesday to recall two city council members. all of this stems from a financial scandal dating back to last fall when allegations over financial mismanagement led to the resignation of one city council member. a bill making its way

through the senate senate could change the way alcohol is sold at grocery stores. supporters of the bill say a self-checkout makes it easy for minors to buy alcohol. the bill has already been approved by the assembly. similar bills have been introduced before, but failed to become law. by the end of this month, you will need a device to detect what they call the silent killer. california's new carbon monoxide poisoning prevent act goes into effect. yesterday, cal fire teamed up with low's home appliance, and the company first alert to educate home eveners about the new law. >> normally, it take as tragedy for the awareness to be created. it's nice the state of california has actually proactively put it out there. >> on average, 480 people die

every year from carbon monoxide poisoning and more than 20,000 people are sent to hospitals across the nation. gearing up for another soggy day over the bay area, giving you a live look, san francisco. a mix of clouds, even blue sky outside our door this morning, some of us dealing with light scattered showers. most of the peninsula dry. livermore reporting light rain, it looks to be just to the north at this moment. danville saw late rain earlier this morning. now concord, clayton, continuing to see the light scattered showers falling. napa, santa rosa also reporting a few light showers at this time. our winds, generally light out there and temperatures very similar to yesterday. taking a look at satellite and radar explains a lot. while we did see a lull in the rainfall, more to come. the system still off the coast. i'm standing right in front of it. take it look at what's going on here, this is moving east over

the course of today. this is the coldest, most unstable air. with afternoon sunshine, we could see a few thunderstorms in the area, it's a slight possibility, but it's going to be there. for today, scattered showers in and out. not the steady rain, but a few scattered showers, with partly cloudy, and mostly cloudy skies. santa rosa, about noon time, maybe seeing a few late showers on and off, throughout the day. we're seeing it around the east bay. because of the circulation, we're getting the wrap around moisture. particularly the east bay, as well as the north bay going to see the scatters showers. for the peninsula, it looks like we'll be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. mostly dry. we're going to continue to this to clear up confusion there. clouds and sunshine expected for today. scattered showers will remain through your sunday, and in the afternoon, a slim chance for maybe a few thunderstorms over the area, especially east of north bay. 56degrees right now in napa. upper 50s, oakland. 56 in san jose. our afternoon highs bouncing

good morning to you, a live look at oakland this morning, 57 degrees, mostly cloudy skies. bike advocates say a new report on accidents in the bay area say children need more education involving bicycle safety. they look at highway patrol records from 2005 to 2009 involving bike crashes and found 3200 of them involve 10 to 19-year-olds. the report also shows 63% of the bike vs. car accidents were actually caused by the cyclists. half of whom were 12 to 16-year- old boys. a special event will take place on the golden gate bridge today to call attention to suicide prevention. here is a live look at the golden gate bridge right now.

later this morning, family and friends of those who lost loved ones to suicide will form a human chain on the walkway. the event will start at 10:00 a.m. time is 7:46. 30 years ago today, the first report report came out involving pneumonia, and gay men, which we know now is a.i.d.s. a bay area doctor is on the frontline of what was a brand new health battle. dr.silverman joins us live in the newsroom. good morning. >> good morning. >> when we look back about three decades ago, exactly, talk a little bit about the fear. there was a lot unknown at this point. doctors didn't know if a.i.d.s. was an infectious disease. tell us what it was like treating patients with this mystery disease. >> it was very scary. we didn't know what was being spread, how it was spread, how you could treat it.

there was a great deal of a feeling of fear and anxiety. throughout san francisco general hospital, people took amazing effort, and didn't shy asway from the problems. the fear didn't make them less effective on the frontlines. >> we've seen doctors at this point, you can see not using gloves, protective gear, it really was a different time. >> absolutely. if anything really good has come of this epidemic, is using universal precautions, assuming anyone could be infectious. therefore, i think we've reduced the spread of hepatitis b, and hepatitis c and much more infections, because we're much more attentive to how we

deal with patients and medical settings. >> it took us three years to identify hiv. one of the problems early on was reporting. they were using the term body fluids, instead of using semen and blood, and saying it was a sexually transmitted disease. if you look back at the reporting and see where we've come since, how far do you think we've come? >> we've learned more in a shorter period of time than any other infectious situation in the world actually. we found out what was causing it. we found out how to find out the testing that would be used. we've had medications now. and we have new strides, i think we've made new strides in prevention. we have circumcision in africa has reduced 75% the

transmission. early intervention, treating early has shown almost a 96% reduction in the spread of the infection to an uninfected partner. and preexposure, prophalanxes, giving people drugs before they get that infection has reduced that rate. we've come a long way. we still have a way to go to find a cure. i think we're going to find that in the next 5 to 10 years. a vaccine may take a little longer. but we're made more strides in hiv/a.i.d.s. than any other disease in reported history. >> i want to thank you on joining us on what is this 30th anniversary live from the newsroom. the casey anthony trial will continue in florida. yesterday, a forensic expert said hair found in casey an

here in east palo alto. we can tell you some of the things we observed officers doing out here. there is still fingerprint dust on that van. looking for fingerprints earlier this morning. what investigators told me is they really need a witness. >> we're looking for any witnesses who may have witnessed it. or may have seen anything, heard anything, or even heard about this happening and may have any type of information. we'll take anything at this point. >> reporter: investigators confirmed to me this morning, the deceased victim in this case is a 2-month-old baby boy. the shooting happened about 12:50 this morning, as the family was leaving a baby shower. two men in hoodies approached the minivan, with a mother, a father, and two children inside. the suspects opened fire, hitting the 2-month-old boy, his mom and dad. the mother and father again are

recovering, the 2-month-old boy is deceased, the suspects took off on foot. the family sped away, and their minivan finally stopping in palo alto. >> the police coming to my house, told me to listen to somebody, making shots and i said yes. these people, 1:45 maybe, 1:00. that's it. >> reporter: investigators tell me they're still looking for a motive in this case. we're also told they will be hosting a news conference this morning later on. also overnight, oakland police are investigating a shooting outside a nightclub that sent three men to the hospital, it happened just before 3:00 a.m., on webster. we do know one of the victims

is undergoing surgery. no arrests have been made. a joint funeral service will take place this week for the two san francisco firefighters killed in the line of duty, the service for anthony valerio and vincent perez. they responded to a fire on thursday in the diamond heights area, where it occurs a flashover occurred. valerio was in critical condition for two days and died yesterday morning. his colleagues on the side absolute thed man -- saluted the man they served with, two days after performing the same tribute to vincent perez. this is the first time since

1976, two san francisco firefighters died after responding to the same call. >> i think numbness. a lot of disbelief right now. but we're going to get through it. >> he would want all of you to remember him as that happy person always telling jokes, and just living life. that's what he did. >> in addition to friday's joint funeral, the family tells ktvu, it is also planning a memorial for the surfer to spread his ashes. firefighters at station 26 have set up a poignant memorial to remember their two colleagues. the gear belonging to them is now arranged on two chairs in the lobby. outside a black sash is draped across the balcony. members of the public have been stopping by the station to leave notes and flowers. meanwhile, the investigation

continues. investigators are working around the clock to figure out what happened. >> within a couple of days, they'll put everything together, and let us know what happened. >> investigators suspect a flashover could be responsible for the death. that's when everything suddenly ignites, reaching temperatures close to 1,000 degrees. the four story design of the home is also being looked at as a factor. we put together a slide show of some of the images from the memorial as well as thursday's fire. there has been more deadly violence in san jose. police say a 44-year-old man was killed and another man was injured. police have not released the men's identities, or said if one or both lived at that house. the shooter is still at large. this is the 23rd homicide of

the year that san jose police are investigating. the city has seen 25 homicides in 2011, including two murders on the san jose state campus, which has its own police force. there were just 20 homicides in san jose in all of last year. also in oakland, crime tape surrounded the scene where a man was shot execution style according to police. it happened around 2:30 yesterday afternoon on high street near fleming. sources tell ktvu, someone apparently shot a man three times in the head while he was working on his car. that person then left the scene, the vick thames identity has not yet been revealed. there is no word on a motive, or suspects in this case. the wallo fire has grown to more than 225 scare miles and is 0% contained. white rite now, many firefighterring crews are clearing away brush near homes. they're also setting backfires to protect nearby communities.

the service for anthony valerio and vincent perez will be held friday at st. mary's cathedral in san francisco. the firefighters from station 226 responded to a house fire on thursday in the diamond heights area. the two were inside the house when something went wrong. perez died that day. valerio was in kit cal condition for two day -- critical condition for two days and died. we have been told investigators are working round-the-clock to figure out what happened on thursday. they suspect a flashover could be responsible for the deaths. that's when everything suddenly ignites, reaching temperatures near 1,000 degrees. the four story design of the home is also being looked at as a contributing factor. >> ed lee spoke shortly after

government. california is facing a budget short fall and some groups say there is a simple solution to the problem. live in los angeles this morning with the programs the groups say should be cut. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. as you know, money isn't exactly flowing here in california. you mentioned the budget short fall, it's to the tune of about $11 billion. programs and services have been cut. as the state looks at ways to save money, some are taking a look at the cost of services to undocumented residents calling the golden state home. about 1.2 million illegal immigrants live in california, more than any other state. and immigration reform groups say billions of your taxpayer dollars are wasted each year on that segment of the population. >> i'm shocked to see how many services are still going to illegal aliens at a time when the state is bleeding red ink.

clearly, there's going to have to be a reconsideration of how california spends tax money for illegal immigrants. >> reporter: the state commissioned its own nonpartisan study, and found, ready for this? that nearly $4.5 billion are spent each year on providing certain services to illegal immigrants. education is among the highest, with nearly 2 billion going to teach kids who's parents are in the country illegally. immigration rights groups say that many undocumented residents do in fact pay their taxes, and those numbers are not being factored into these studies. >> both undocumented as well as citizens and legal permanent residents make up 1/3 of the labor force. in addition to that, they also contribute to our economy. in regards to income taxes, as well as purchasing power. >> reporter: both sides do agree on one thing, saying that
