us. it's tuesday june 7. i'm pam cook. how's the weather? let's check in with steve paulson for a look. good morning, steve. good morning. the first five days of june have been the coolest for many ever. today i'm going to say something i haven't said in a long time. it will be a little warmer. not by the coast but inland we'll see some 70s. i know that's below average but still warmer than what we've had. interstate 880 moving along nicely past the construction zone at high street and all the way downtown. also looking at the commute on northbound 101 in san francisco, that's at the speed limit. 4:31. let's get to the news with pam. we begin with news from overnight. two teenagers are in the hospital after an early morning crash. that was the scene at about 2:30 this morning on 66th avenue in oakland. police say a 15-year-old and 17- year-old were in the gray sedan. they were traveling at a high rate of speed when they crashed

into a driveway and ended up underneath a parked pickup truck. both boys were taken to highland hospital. that crash is still under investigation. the case of a missing nursing student, michelle le, is now being called a homicide. ktvu's tara moriarty is at police headquarters this morning with what they are saying this morning. tara. >> reporter: actually, we are not at police headquarters. we are at the hospital parking lot where investigators believe that michelle le was actually killed. they say that surveillance video from this garage as well as forensic evidence collected from her car all points to murder. now lee stanley walked out of police headquarters yesterday with heavy hearts after officials told them the nursing student who vanished ten days ago was killed. the 26-year-old was last seen may 27th around 7:00 at night when she took a break from her duties at the hospital where she was working toward her nursing degree. the next day her honda was found a few blocks away.

this latest news is a huge blow to le's friends and family. >> we realize this is the worst possible news family or friends or anyone to have, but despite everybody's hopes, our efforts for michelle have now turned to efforts of recovery. >> reporter: yesterday investigators collected boxes of evidence from a person of interest apartment. officials say they have now ruled this case a homicide. based not only on evidence from the scene but information collected during searches and interviews. police have interviewed more than 25 people in this case. and now their next step is to search rural areas of the east bay as they look for le's body. live in hayward, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. well, the reward in the michelle le case has grown to $65,000. samuel merit university has contributed $25,000. her employer, turner

construction, pledged $20,000. the le family also contributed $20,000 to the reward fund. but according to the family's website the reward is for information leading to michelle's safe return. it's not known if that reward will be carried over to find her killer. this morning two suspected teenage gang members are behind bars in connection with the fatal shooting of a baby boy in east palo alto. police now say the weekend killing of 3-month-old is a case of mistaken identity. the two teenagers opened fire on the car after mistakenly thinking they were involved in a gang fight last week. the baby's mother says she tried to shield her baby from the gunfire. >> i protected all with my body. i thought that i had protected my baby in the car seat but one of the bullets went into his head. >> ktvu news took these exclusive pictures of the two teenage suspects several hours

after the shooting. investigators say a 17-year-old wearing a black hoody faces possible murder charges. the 16-year-old wearing a plaid shirt faces weapons charges. an autopsy has been performed but police in sunny vale are still working to identify the body found in a garbage bag over the weekend. a man found the bag in the bushes on sunday near his home. police say the body of a latino woman was inside but she did not have any identification. police say she was fully clothed and had blunt force trauma to the head. san frisco's coat tower will be lit up in red this week to honor two fallen firefighters. it will stay red for the two died after fighting a fire in the diamond heights neighborhood thursday. coit tower honors firefighters and the family's commitment to san francisco. funeral plans have been

finalized for the two men. a joint service is scheduled for 12:30 friday afternoon at st. mary's cathedral. the two men will then be laid to rest at holy cross cemetery. a vigil is planned for thursday night at st. mary's cathedral. the alameda city council reviewing the memorial day drowning websited by police and firefighters. this comes as city officials dodge questions about why the emergency responders did nothing to help the victim. yesterday we were told that the alameda fire chief was not doing interviews. the mayor, city manager and city attorney were all unavailable, but people in alameda are demanding answers. >> what we're seeing is the mayor saying, yes, you know we're going to take this seriously, we're going to investigate this. yet nobody is on administrative leave. so it doesn't look like it's being taken seriously. >> right after the drowning city officials said budget cuts eliminated funding for water rescue training. but according to the budget on the city's website the city is

prepared to handle water emergencies. city council is expected to issue their review of the incident at tonight's meeting. new this morning, pretrial motions are set to begin today in the case of a suspected gang member accused of killing a father and his two sons nearly three years ago. edwin ram os is accused of killing tony and two of his sons in excelsior district in june of 2008. he appears to have mistaken them for rival gang members. the 24-year-old murder suspect claims another person was the shooter. the unanimous vote kamala # late last night. the palo alto city council has approved what is believed to be the largest development plan in the city's history. the $5 billion project includes building a new stanford hospital. this is an animation of what the new hospital would look like. the plans also call for expanding the children's

get the decision in that game because, well, giants came back. take a look at the commute on 80 westbound as you head out to the macarthur maze traffic is moving along okay as you drive out to the macarthur maze and the bay bridge toll plaza. also this morning westbound bay bridge the traffic looks good coming out to the toll plaza. and no problems getting on to the upper deck of the bay bridge. and this morning's commute on 280 northbound off to a nice start all the way into the valley. no problem on 17. 4:39. let's go to steve. all right, sal, thank you, sir. well, today -- yesterday was a strange day because it did clear towards the peninsula and also in the south bay. so they had sun before everybody else. temperatures got into the low 70s. yet for many in the east bay and north bay it was cloudy and cool oldening long. today it's a little more typical. there are some areas of low clouds and also another system rotating right off the coast. what's new. but we'll see sooner burn off. with that westerly or southwesterly breeze sfo west

at 12, west southwest at fairfield still a sea breeze but temperatures 40s and 50s. now for some if you get the clearing it's right there at 50 or upper 40s. that's pretty cool for fairfield this time of year. 57 san jose which is overcast right now. the system is dropping downright there, right there. get another look at it. doesn't have much moisture to work with it but it's there. that will enhance the fog a little bit. but, it's again nothing else dropping down that has that much energy with it. but still see morning fog then sun. it will be warmer inland. what'd he say? i haven't had my coffee yet. what'd he say? i said warmer inland. still a westerly breeze. coming up a little bit. see some low to mid-70s yet by the coast 50s and 60s. too much in the way of low clouds and fog and the five-day forecast looks like we're back into a near normal pattern. i say that because temperatures will warm up but they don't really go above average. they stay near average to light sly slightly below. all right. thank you, steve. saving time at the airport.

good morning. low clouds and fog. burn back to the coast. typical now more june weather. still be cooler than normal this time of year but the inland areas will warm to low and mid-70s. heavy rainfall in southwest china is flooding the area. at least 14 people have been killed, dozens more are missing. take a look at that fast moving water swept away cars and destroyed homes, roads and bridges. 45,000 people in one province have been evacuated, but some people are stranded. the flooding comes after months of drought in the area. rain is now expected to continue. a wild fire in the mountains of eastern arizona continues to burn out of control this morning. holdouts in the small resort town of gear were ordered to evacuate yesterday as strong winds fanned the flames. more people are on standby now. about 230,000 acres have burned since that fire started.

they believe an unattended campfire is to blame. 2500 firefighters are working to contain that fire and another fire to the south. a canadian man has that country's first suspected case of e. coli linked to the outbreak in europe. researchers in germany still have not been able to positively identify the source of that e. coli outbreak that has killed 22 people and sickened more than 2300 others. the canadian man had traveled to germany recently. he does not appear to have a severe case and has been released from the hospital. but four people here in the united states have tested positive for that bacteria. is judge has issued an order preventing the los angeles police department from destroying any surveillance tape from a motel and nearby locations in connection with the bryan stow beating case. attorneys representing giovanni ramirez say the video from the day after the beating will show that ramirez had a full head of

hair. witnesses have said the person who attacked stow was bald. ramirez was arrested last month and has remained in jail on a parole violation. he has not been charged in the beating of stow. bryan stow is still in the hospital in san francisco in critical condition. a 19-year-old man is in custody for a deadly shooting in oakley. dam yen was arrested sunday night at his home. police say he shot and killed james early saturday morning at o'hara park middle school. investigators have linked the suspect to gang activity but say they still don't know the motive for this shooting. new york congressman anthony weiner says he will fully cooperate with an ethics investigation into whether he broke any house rules when he sent lewd photos of himself over the internet. weiner initially denied sending the photos, but yesterday he tearfully confessed to the scandal and apologized. he admitted to sending inappropriate photos and

messages to six women before and after he got married. one of the women is now speaking out. >> he was eager to hear about if i wanted him or thought he was attractive or that sort of thing. >> i'm deeply sorry for the pain this has caused my wife and our family and my constituents, my friends, supporters and staff. >> this is one of the photos that congressman weiner reportedly sent online. he also confessed to having explicit telephone conversations with some of the women, but he says he never had sex with any of the women. weiner says he and his wife are staying together and he says he is not resigning. there's a special election today giving hercules voters the chance to clear out city hall. voters will decide whether to recall mayor ward and city councilman. the recall vote stems from

financial scandals dating back to last fall. allegations of financial mismanagement led to the resignation of one city council member and the recall of two others. if either ward or donald are recalled, voters will then decide who should replace them. there's also a special election tomorrow in richmond. voters there will decide whether to raise the city's sales tax by half of a percent. that would make it 10.25%. also on the ballot is a measure on whether to split that new tax money between programs for the city's poor and public schools. if the measures fail, richmond officials say they will have to cut an additional $2 million from the budget. police officers in pleasant hill say they have some of the lowest pay and benefits in contra costa county. they took their complaints about contract negotiations to city hall. >> i've been here 21 years and 27 years in law enforcement and this is the first time i've ever considered leaving for reasons like this. >> now police say the city of

pleasant hill wants them to now pay $1,000 a month or more for their benefits. the vice mayor says the city needs all employees to make concessions. police say they have gone without raises for two years. an air travel industry group says their new plan to scan passengers' eyes will greatly speed up check in time. the international air transport association released their plan today that would feature iris scanners. they would match the passengers' eye to their passport. information inside passports would identify passenger who is might pose a security risk. the system should be in place within five years. there are extra eyes on the streets of vallejo after police activated two new high-tech surveillance cameras. officers on patrol can watch the video on computers inside their cruisers. each camera costs about $7,000. a local businessman agreed to pay two-thirds of that cost. >> the use of the cameras gives you maybe three more policeman

line of communication nearly everywhere in oakland. the city concedes there will still be a few dead zones but far fewer than before. a veteran's memorial in san francisco is moving one step closer to completion. the top three designs will be unveiled today and released to the public tomorrow. the winner will be announced in the coming weeks and then it will be built across the street from san francisco's city hall. the plan is to formally dedicate it on veterans day next year. well, the highest grossing and most attended music tour in history comes to oakland tonight. the baseball field is pretty much covered at the coliseum for u2's 360 tour. the band which includes silicon valley investor will also perform. that concert is sold out. coming up on 5:00. let's check in with sal for traffic. sal. pam, i saw u2 like 20 years ago. i'm feeling old right now. >> i've seen them a couple times. pretty good show. >> it's a good show.

good morning everyone. there's not a lot going on traffic-wise. we just mentioned the u2 show. obviously the best way to get there just like for an a's game or warriors game, bart stops right at the coliseum and you don't have to worry about parking. look at the westbound san mateo bridge looks good heading to the high-rise. also this morning's commute looks good. we were talking about the coliseum. there are some signs and little bit of late night road work not effecting traffic right now although you will see the signs and chp officers out there monitoring the progress until they pick that up. and the morning drive on westbound bay bridge that looks pretty good coming up to the toll plaza. today'swet we are steve. sal. >> yes, sir. >> i've seen most bands a long time ago. >> me too. >> low clouds continue to move in and -- but the good news is now yesterday the south bay cleared out. it was sunny. had some low 70s. today looks like just the opposite. north bay and east bay struggled with cloud cover all day long, but today should be a little bit of a reversal.

wednesday, thursday. but looks like friday, saturday we'll see temperatures ease back as another low drops in. still below average. well, a postal worker in gold country being called a hero just for calling the sheriff's office. he has been delivering the mail in the town for nearly ten years. he's learned the habits of many of the people on his route. so when he saw mail stacking up and accumulating trash at the home of a 68-year-old woman, he called for help. >> just seemed a miss for someone to go that long without doing their daily routine that everybody does. >> the woman had fallen two days earlier and was unable to call for help. sheriff deputies say at first they thought she was dead, and she might have died if young had not called that day. this is an amazing story. a georgia man may want to display the necklace that saved his life during a robbery. he and his wife were preparing to open their store when a

robber walked in and demanded all their money. take a look at that. he told them the safe could be opened and the robber aimed his gun at the wife. the husband stepped in front of her just as the gun went off but the gold medallion on his necklace deflected the bullet. the man just has minor injuries. police are still looking for that suspect. the search for a missing nursing student is now a murder investigation. the evidence that led police to that conclusion. and voters in hercules cast their ballots for a recall today. politician who's creating a new conflict this morning.
