the family of the missing nursing student is set to speak at hayward police headquarters after this hour. what will they say? could voters clean house in hercules. what's being done now in helping a bay area family who lost their little boy in a tragic shooting. those stories and more next on ktvu channel 2 news at noon.

good afternoon, we begin with a missing person's case who has turned into a homicide case. we just got the report that police have searched the nile's canyon area for evidence in the missing student michelle le. kraig debro has the story. >> reporter: we just learned that michelle le's family is going to be here at hayward police headquarters. dramatic turn of events here just after a day police announced that they were turning the missing person's case into a homicide case. the family is coming here to say that they believe michelle le is still missing. not only that they are upset that police have turned this case from a missing person's case to a homicide case. the family said to speak to the media here at any moment. we don't expect to see what we saw here yesterday.

which is the le family coming out of hayward police headquarters with a lot of heart ache and sorrow. the police officer department have told the family that they are looking at recovering the body of michelle le and not finding her alive. >> we have considered the examination of the evidence that has been collected during the service of several search warrants in this case. >> reporter: michelle le was last seen walking to the parking garage at kaiser hospital in hayward. the 26-year-old student at samuel merit was pursuing a lifelong goal to becoming a nurse. the next day le's locked honda was found a few blocks away. police say what happened was a random attack. they believe she was targeted but don't know by whom. >> we know this is the worse

possible news for family or friends or anyone around to have. but despite the efforts of finding michelle have now turned to efforts of recovery. >> the samuel merit university where michelle le attended school issues a statement today and posted it on its website on the front page there which reads in part, le is a beautiful kindhearted and energetic person who graced us with her presence there. the teachers and classmates described le as being self- less. a lot of sadness there at the university in oakland. we expect the le family to be here at noon for a news conference, they are supposed to speak to the public. word is they are going to say something in disagreement with the hayward police department's decision to turn this from a missing person's case to a homicide case. we're going to follow this for you if it starts in the newscast we're going to bring you some of that.

to discuss german trade and efforts to improve both economies. a new poll released this morning could be causing some concern for president oe baa obama as he gets ready for his reelection campaign. gop presidential candidate mitt romney is in a dead heat for the president in a hypothetical match up. mr.obama and romney both get 47%. but when the poll includes registered voters, the lead is for romney. there's already controversy on one of their potential replacement. eric rasmuss has the story. >> reporter: we heard from a couple of people out here that say they simply want a change. you can see not a whole lot going on. i talked to poll workers who

say turn out has been light so far and there are still some big questions about who might be swept in to office. it might not feel like election day but voters we found at the poll for hercules. >> i want change. >> told us they're ready to recall ward and keaney. >> you think there needs to be a change. >> i think there needs to be a change made. i think there were poor decisions made by the government. >> reporter: in polls, they questioned sweetheart land deals for a company owned by a former city manager. >> we got to watch every penny that we spend. and it's obvious to me that that hasn't been the case here in hercules. >> but there's already questions about one replacement candidate gerard boulanger, a

series of accusations that he lied on his resume. he says that he did not. >> i think it's a waste of our money to tell you the truth. because politicians are politicians, they are basically suits. >> so you don't care who's in there? >> doesn't seem to matter. >> reporter: as we come back out to one of these polling places, contra costa county estimates this special election could cost hercules taxpayers $60,000. no calls yesterday from ward or keany's camps today. they are also deciding who will fill a vacant council spot. >> thank you, eric. voters in richmond are also heading to the polls today to decide whether to raise the city's sale taxes by a half percent. if voters pass the measure today the sales tax in the city would grow to 10.25%. also in the ballot is the

measure on whether to split that new tax money between programs for the city's poor and public schools. if the measures fail, richmond officials say they will have to cut an additional $2 million from the budget. tonight, the alameda city council will issue their robert report about the memorial day drowning. they said they were not trained to perform a water rescue. now more information is being revealed. county fire officials say they were called abouthe status of their rescue boat but that the city never asked them to send it. >> we were asked if we -- what our uta might be for a response. we told them we had a 30 minute and they said, okay thanks. after the drowning, city officials said budget cuts eliminated water rescue funds but according to a city memo

berkeley police said a car fished out of the water at aquatic park this morning. a man was pulled over to use his phone noticed it at 11:30. the vehicle is a blue 1995 any 1995 nissan maxima that had been stolen. police says the not unusual to find stolen cars but they are not usually dumped in the water. two teenagers are in the hospital after a crash. this is the scene on 66th

avenue in oakland. police say a 15-year-old and 17- year-old were in the gray sedan. they were traveling at a high rate of speed when they crashed into a driveway and ended up underneath a parked pickup truck. both boys were taken to highland hospital. the crash is under investigation. some job seekers on the peninsula are getting some help today at a free job hunters boot camp. it's the 6-1 hosted by peninsula congresswoman spears since january of last year. over 3,000 job seekers have attended. this one is focusing on recent college graduates, veterans and mature workers. about 20 local companies will be at the event. >> we call it a boot camp because it is a boot camp. it's about pulling yourselves up from your boot straps. dusting off your resume. kind of making it relevant for today's market. learning how to interview better. >> reporter: the free job

hunter's boot camp is being held at the college of san mateo until 2:30 this afternoon. the labor department today did not have very good news for job seekers. it announced fewer advertisements for job openings. analysts say today's numbers could be a sign that hiring could remain weak in the coming months. grave diggers at one of 17 cemeteries in karma are demanding a resolution. they've been locked out of their job at wood lawn memorial park since april 12 after the owner proposed a $2 an hour pay cut and other take aways. that will reduce the pay of some workers to just $15 an hour. this is video from this morning. one person is holding a sign saying it's day 57 of the lock out. the owner says with fewer burials there's less needs for

grave diggers and the cuts are needed to avoid lay offs. a world health organization expert says time is running out to stop the e.coli outbreak. at the beginning they blamed german sprouts, on sunday they blamed german cumbers. in the meantime, the health commissioner says that premature and inaccurate conclusions are causing major economic losses for farmers. >> it is crucial that national authorities do not rush to give information on source of infection which is not proven by bacteria analysis. so far more than 2,400

taking a live look at the big board on wall street. a little bit of a bounce today. some describing the latest losses in the past five weeks as overdone. there's bargain hunting going on right now. the dow currently up 41. the nasdaq is down nine. ford motor company has big plans to sell more cars around the world. ford says it wants to expand it's global sales by 50% by the middle of this decade. the boost in sales will mostly be through forecasted growth in asian. ford sold 5.3 million vehicles last year but wants to sell 8 million a year in the next four to six years, the detroit auto maker is expected to present its growth plan later today for
