units in here in case there's a multi casualty or if there's a fire that happens at this time. >> reporter: the two firefighters station houses used hoses to spell out their initials. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. grave diggers at a colma cemetery held a rally. they've been locked out of their jobs at woodlawn memorial park after the owner proposed a $2 an hour pay cut among other things. the cemetery says there are fewer burials these days and that cuts are needed to avoid lay offs. san mateo police are investigating a fatal stabbing it happened around 7:30 this afternoon. according to a photographer on the scene, they believe it may

have involved a love triangle. uman was reportedly at the storage facility with her boyfriend when an ex-boyfriend showed up. a fire fight took place and one man was killed. a family is keeping hope alive that a missing nursing student will be found alive. christien kafton is live where the family gave a statement. >> reporter: the le family gathered here at hayward police station earlier this afternoon and told me they think michelle le is still alive and needs to be rescue. the le family said this afternoon despite hayward police changing the investigation from a missing person to a homicide case, the only thing that will convince them michelle le is dead is proof. >> we want to see the body. they just can't tell me they

found something and say that she's dead. >> reporter: le disappeared during a clinical rotation shift. police found her honda suv the following day. police tracked her mobile phone and said lab work including evidence from that suv convince them that she was killed. >> a totality again of everything from the phones, to the evidence that was found in the vehicle to the vehicle itself, to the interviews, again everything is leading to a totality of circumstances. >> reporter: police have confirmed they have interviewed a friend of le. >> we've interviewed more than 25 folks so far and that list will grow today. >> reporter: investigators have spent the day talking to people connected with the case and will release evidence that will lead to an arrest. >> i would hope so. the investigation will lead us in that direction. >> reporter: now today the le family changed the wording on the digital billboard to read

the search is still on. they say they are not giving up hope and will be holding a candle lit vigil for le tonight. samuel merrit university where lee was a student released a statement. it reads quote, we are all deeply saddened by the news and our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and fellow classmates during this difficult time. you will find the raw video of her family's statement today just look under the bay area news tab at ktvu.com. we've been following this case against shemeeka davis since 2008 when she was accused of killing jasmine davis.

she's also accused of torturing jasmine's brother. the alameda fire department says funding cuts led to a lack of training for water rescues. >> i've - - pleasanthill police are investigating a string of catalytic converter thefts. five thefts were reported yesterday all within 24 hours on the south side of the city. investigators say they were stolen from four toyota ford runners and one toyota tacoma. trucks and suvs are especially

popular targets of catalytic converter thieves. the parts are easy to steal and. officers jobs are on the line as a crucial vote is under way. robert handa is live now in san jose with what police are saying and how the mayor responded today about keeping officers on the streets. robert-- >> reporter: well julie officers are coming here to union headquarters or going online to cast their votes. they all got this e-mail from the police officers association and the title says it all about this proposal. the good, the bad, and the ugly. many of san jose's 1,200 police officers are coming to work not knowing if they'll have a job in summer. for them the contract vote will make the difference. >> stressful is an understatement. >> reporter: jeff nicoles is a detective for the sexual assault unit, a 12 year veteran. five with san jose and that puts him in the bubble. if the rank in file agree to a 10% pay cut, nicoles job is

safe. if the proposal is rejected,' will be one of the officers laid off. nicoles says he tries to forget that on the job. >> while i'm going home, i don't know if i'll still live there come a few years when i don't have a job. >> reporter: there's still anger and skepticism toward city hall. >> guys are saying why should i take the 10% cut if they're just going to come back next year and say they're going to cut jobs. >> reporter: mayor reed says that officers will be laid off. but promised that the officers would be rescued will not face the ax this fiscal year. >> we don't want them worrying. we're not going to do that. >> reporter: detective nicoles born and raised in san jose says he wants to stay. >> i think i'm an asset to this city and this department. but if i'm forced to look elsewhere, the city will be at a loss and also the department.

and that's an unfortunate thing for everyone involved. >> reporter: live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. muni drivers came together in support of a coworkers they say could be unfairly fired. members of transport workers 258 say the union wants to fire maxwell for helping another worker while maxwell was on break. >> he did nothing wrong, and i think the facts will come to bear bare in this case. but in the meantime they're going to have him sitting on the couch with a threat for his livelihood. blue shield of california is promising to limit its profits and give back something extra. the san francisco based insurer made that claim today. the company said it will cap

profits from the previous year then will return everything above that to policyholders. blue shield has come under fire for proposing rate increases. some high school students and staff in oakland are fighting to keep their counselors. officials at skyline high school plan to cut college counselors to save money. but during a protest this afternoon, opponents said counselors are necessary to guide student aepbs cutting them will cause more problems -- and cutting them will cause only more problems than it will solve. >> i think we're in for a huge problem here at this school and students deserve a lot better than what it is they're getting. >> the protesters say cutting college counselors are giving students second class treatment. first lady michelle obama is coming to the bay area. congresswoman lee issued the statement. she says, quote, i am delighted

part of san francisco's richmond district was shut down. police, firefighters and the bomb squad responded to the scene on 24th and clement. officials say a large fireworks exploded inside a mailbox. there were no injuries or damages but surrounding streets were closed. police say the remains belong to maria ester orosco. the grizzly discovery was made sunday. orozco died from blunt force trauma to the head. officials released their plan to reduce the california prison population. it is identical to governor brown's plan in response to

last month's u.s. supreme order to reduce state prison overcrowding. the goal is to add 10,000 low risk inmates to jails. republicans say they will continue to oppose the plan that would give counties the extra money they need to house more inmates. >> they're trying to scare people into more taxes when we haven't looked at the situation as it is. if the state plan fails the court may order early prisoner releases based on good time credits and diversion programs. voters have three hours to clear out city hall. this was the scene at the polls this morning. a special recall election is being held for mayor ward and donald kuehne. voters are allegation deciding

>> reporter: the golden gate bridge stretches 40 miles and encompasses three of the busiest shipping lanes. this afternoon these three ships just minutes apart seen through marine sanctuary waters at about 35 miles per hour. environmental groups want a federal 12--mile-per-hour speed limit to save whales. >> slowing down ships can be very important to reduce fatal injuries to whales. over the last decade there's been at least 50 whale that is have lost from ships off the coast of california. >> reporter: those were obvious, and likely many more less obvious. they say slowing down helps the whales hear the ships in time to get out of the way. there's conflicting science. but researchers tell me because engines are in back there's a sound shadow in front of sound ships and whales won't hear it unless it's very close. merchant shippers say they don't want to hit whales

either, but. >> you would have to reduce the vessel ship where you might lose navigational control of the vessel to make a significant difference. >> reporter: the shipping organization told me today time is money. slowing down can be expensive but it will support a science based solution. environmentalists say lowering the speed is also a benefit. >> it will reduce gases. >> reporter: reporting live, john fowler, ktvu news. warmer weather this week could put parts of the state at risk of some flooding. that's because the temperatures could melt snow packs. and while officials say they are prepared for the run offs, they are prepared at the areas most at risk. >> right now our concerns are really with the san joaquin river system and the south

central valley. >> reporter: the increase in snow melt will coincide with the usual increase in consumer increased need for water. temperatures way up in some spots today. >> yeah, a solid 15 degrees, some places more than that. so we got back into the 70s. we were in the upper 50s yesterday. we had sprinkles yesterday. remember that. big difference today. farthest along the coast, it's patchy at best. you see this layer, that's going to push in on shore this afternoon. this evening in tonight. and that will put fog right into the coastal neighborhoods and even around the bay. overnight lows in the 40s, low 50s. not valley fog but coastal fog in your bay area forecast. that coastal fog will push inland. remember yesterday morning where it goes to fremont. it's not really an issue for your commute it's just really filtered sunshine event. tomorrow morning, it's 7:00 a.m.

there it is. there's oakland, fremont out in the livermore valley. the fog along the coastal sections. in the meantime it's back to the coast and it's done. so the fog comes in and returns tomorrow night. that's the cycle that you would expect and that's the cycle that we're going to get. because we have had a cycle that you wouldn't expect for this time of year. frank just read the story about the water ways and the snow the potential snow melt. we have had an unusual year. no one can remember a year quite like this. i talked to my dad the other day, he's 85, grew up in san francisco, he said i can't remember a season like this where the jet stream was so far south. we all kind of went through it together. now we're getting a break. nice hour 80s, friday cools down a little with a little coastal fog. but none of this is going to cause you a problem as you travel around. there's the fog tomorrow morning, a bigger shot as you see it out on the coast. 78 in concord, 80 in antioch. there's a couple of 80s.

the future of treasure island is being decided at this hour, the san francisco board of supervisors is considering an appeal of a $1.5 billion

project to redevelop the island. the plan includes new residential units, commercial space and office space as well as new roads and a ferry terminal. critics say among other things it would create too much traffic on the bridge. san francisco mayor ed lee tells ktvu he wants the medical center to pay for community improvements in order to win approval for an extension. it's money they say they just don't have. california pacific wants to build a new 555 bed hospital and office building. people are talking about the warriors new head coach. mark is here to tell us what they're saying. >> everybody has a reaction when you hire a guy. granted it is a risk as mike says, mark jackson has no coaching experience. good news today. as they say they've hired a man
