good morning,. thank you for waking up with thus. steve paulson is here with the weather. i'm not complaining this morning. it was very nice yesterday. >> that is the first for a week. i'm teasing. people yesterday had a little bit more happier smiles because the sun did come out. i tell you though i came close to putting an 80 in for antioch. there is a lot of fog and rip roaring sea breeze. i don't think we warm up that much. temperatures still below average. here is sal. it's going to be effected by am fatal accident in palo alto. southbound 101 at least three lanes are closed. we have no estimated time when they will reopen those lanes on 101. we do have a crew on the way. in fact they are on the scene. 101 is not a good place to be in palo alto. there is likely to be a slow

down in both directions because of this serious fatal accident. interstate 880 that traffic moves well. let's go back to the desk. also topping our news this morning. two early morning fires in the berkeley hills. tara moriarty is at the scene of the first fire with information about why the two may be linked. tara. >> reporter: could an arsonist be on the loose? that's what fire investigators are tying to determine this morning. if you look behind me here you can see where this fire started at this car and how the flames lapped up against the roof of the house. these two fires broke out within one block of each other around 1:00 mt. morning. someone called in the first fire saying a car was up in flames close to a house. crews drove by another fire along the way and believed these two may be connected. >> the second fire we officially had reports of

individuals trapped in the building. fortunately they were able to extinguish the fire so there is no injury to the residence. >> reporter: no one was hurt in either of these fires. we have no word on damage estimates. this investigator will be out here for the next several hours. coming up a little bit later we will tell you how an alert firefighter may have saved the second house from further destruction. i'm tara moriarty. firefighters in kent field are investigating a fire this morning. that started just after midnight at a home on cypress avenue. firefighters were all called to the scene to help. there appears to be damage inside the home. it's not clear if anyone was hurt. the cause of that fire is unknown. well this is what is left of a car found burning last night. that car was found about 11:00

p.m. on the union pacific railroad tracks in oakland. firefighters have determined that the car was abandoned on the tracks and intentionally set on fire. the incident is still under investigation. all lanes of interstate 80 are back open. that is after the big rig fell 30 feet from an onramp. the crash happened around 8:00 last night. the truck was traveling on the onramp that leads from west grand avenue to the mccarthur maze. that's when the driver lost control and flipped over the side. the truck landed on a grassy shoulder below. crews had to shut down two lanes while they cleared the scene. the driver managed to walk away with minor cuts. the mayor of alameda is calling for a review of the

drowning at a city beach. firefighters stood ashore and watched as a suicidal man died. they said they did not go into the water because they are not properly certified in emergency water rescues. they blame that lack of training on budget cuts. it dominated last nights alameda city council meeting. >> we want to see what happened. when it happened. how to prevent it from happening again and what steps we should take to do it. the death of raymond zach has sparked an intense debate on whether emergency responders did enough to save his life. excuse me. this morning the investigation continues into a fatal police shooting in san francisco that happened last night near buena vista park. now investigators say officers shot and killed a suspected

bank robber from southern california. they say the officers were forced to open fire after the man tried to run them over with his car. >> the actions of the driver that time drove directly at the officers putting their lives in danger. they feared for their own safety and they at that point had to discharge their weapons to stop his actions. >> the man died a short time later at san francisco general hospital. police will release more information on the man killed later today. it's 4:36 we want to check in with sal on traffic. what is going on? >> we have that accident, pam, on the peninsula. it's southbound 101 right near the oregon expressway. this accident is a fatal crash in palo alto. it will be tough driving on 101. we have a few lanes closed there. i would use 280 instead. we do have a crew on the way.

we'll let you know more. in fact, i will pull up a map of that area in a minute. let's take a look at what we have at the east shore freeway. traffic is doing very well with no major issues. traffic continues to look good down to the mccarthur maze and bay bridge toll plaza. traffic is also looking good if you are driving this morning on northbound 280 as you head out toward the 17 interchange. as a matter of fact, traffic continues to move along very nicely as you drive up the 17 and into the valley. again, this morning i want top mention southbound 101 at the oregon expressway there is a fatal accident there. at least a couple of lanes are blocked for the investigation and these things do take time. we'll let you know more coming up. let's go to steve. lots of low clouds and fog. every reporting station says

and fog make it all the way in. it's tough to warm things up. it will be close. by the coast 50s and 60s. more the same as we go into the weekend. slightly warmer for a few. >> i love that. we do have overnight results from two special elections held in the bay area yesterday. voters defeated measure d which would have increased richmond sales tax from 9.75 to 10.25%. the richmond city council was counting on passage from that measure to help balance the city budget. in a special election in hercules. 86% voted to recall the mayor. 80% to recall the city council man. voters chose william wilkins to take mayor ward's place. now the plan to redevelop treasure island is a big step

closer to starting. san francisco board of supervisors gave anonymous approval. it includes 8,000 new homes as well as commercial and office space. critics say it will create too much traffic on the bay bridge. and this fall voters in san francisco will decide on a $250 million bond to fix the city streets. supervisors voted to place the measure on the november ballot yesterday. the money would be used to upgrade roads and sidewalks. honoring san francisco's fallen firefighters. >> i thought it was awesome. really touching. >> the emotional attribute that had many people in tears. and remember that deadly raid in the mediterranean sea last year? the dangerous mission some bay

good morning, we have low clouds and fog pushing well inland. there is a pronounced sea breeze. once the low clouds burn off we'll be in the 60s for some

and 70s for others. a massive fire at a historic mill sent one firefighter to the hospital and forced people in nearby homes to evacuate. take a look at the huge fire. it started at 7:30 last night. flames and plumes of smoke could be seen miles away. all the firefighters were on scene. one firefighter was treated for dehydration but no one else was hurt. firefighters in arizona are trying to gain ground over the second largest wild fire in that state's history. the wallow fire is twice the size of chicago. it has burned more than 480 square miles. destroyed ten structures and forced evacuations. the fire is being blamed on an unintended campfire. the attributes continue for san francisco's two fallen firefighters ahead of friday's public memorial service.

police say they are now investigating the case as a homicide. this morning the family still has digital billboards posted around the bay area. they now read the search is not over. germany health minister says there appears to be good news in the e. coli outbreak. he says the number of new cases is on the decrease but he says it's too late to say that the outbreak is over. more than 2400 people around the world have tested positive for the infection at least 24 people have died. german officials say the source of that contamination may never be discovered. this month a group of activists including some from here in the bay area will once again challenge the israeli blockade of gaza. this is video of israeli cayman does. they shot and killed nine of

those activists. more than a dozen ships will try to deliver aid to the palestinians in gaza. israel has vowed to stop any ship that challenges that block aid. state negotiations are coming down to the wire. governor jerry brown says talks are on the edge of disaster. the state budget has a june 15th deadline. that is next week in order to meet that governor brown has been working with a handful of ares to get them to agree to a temporary tax extension. he says if the republicans can withstand pressure we could have a breakthrough. the governors tax extension plan will give counties the money needed to house more prison inmates. low level offenders would go to county jails instead of state prisons. right now the state prisons are housing 80% more inmates than they were built to hold.

if state legislatures can't come up with a solution, the department of corrections could grant early release to some of the prisoners. some important parents in oakland say they plan to go door to door to find the burglars that have been targeting schools. thieves stole the school safe. principal says there was about $300 inside. the money was raised by parents to help pay for field trips and the fifth grade graduation. >> people that have the audacity to break into a school and steal like that, they have no morals. they have no ethics. >> police are also investigating two other break ins at redwood heights elementary school a few miles away where burglars stole computers and cameras this past week. the school has been keeping the playground open for the community. new concerns about privacy on facebook. the feature under fire that

you are looking at a pretty dramatic rescue. firefighters near atlanta worked late into the night to free an eight-year-old girl after she stuck her arm into a pool drain. the rescue took three hours. one firefighter held the girl above the water level while others used jackhammers to break up the concrete to free her arm. the girl is now recovering in a hospital. she is expected to be okay. is a watsonville man is dead after opening fire inside a sporting goods store. the man apparently walked

inside a big five store around 11:00 yesterday morning wanting to buy a gun. the manager said he was acting strangly. the man left the store but returned minutes later and broke up the gun case. >> he had a saw. he baselyically walked in. took out his extension cord. there is a plug on the outside. plugged it in. undid the lock. started sawing at the gun. >> the manager says he loaded the shotgun and opened fire. police managed to get inside the store and fatally shot the gunman. time now is 4:52. let's go back to sal to check in on one big accident. >> we do have a fatal accident in palo alto. these are live pictures from

the scene. the three left lanes are closed here for this police investigation of an accident that happened just before 3:00 in the morning on southbound 101 near the oregon expressway. ktvu has a crew there. we will find out more about exactly what happened what you need to know is we have several lanes shut down on southbound 101. you should use interstate 280 as an alternate. any time now we will see traffic. although it's pretty early. even though it is early you will see a little delay. it will get worse as the morning wears on. let's go look at the san mateo bridge. westbound traffic looks good heading out to the high-rise. also this morning we are looking at the golden gate bridge. that traffic is moving along nicely as you head toward the toll plaza. thank you, sir. we have a pretty good cloud deck. it's more typical of june here. but the pattern is still below average even if you get the

sunshine inland. temperatures 70. 60s by the coast. a little slower process for that fog to burn off. no rain. had some shower activity and snow up toward central sierra yesterday. 3-9 inches of snow fell east of fresno. up around 8,000 to 10,000 feet. west, southwest sfo. i've got to tell you without any heat at all the fog forms unbelievable fast. you have to hang your hat on that until the pattern changes. yes, we are getting back to near normal but we are still way below on the afternoon highs. they are creeping upwards but they are still below. 50s. mid 50s for almost everybody. fog, low overcast. that will retreat back. still a cool morning and sunny and breezy. 70s inland. there is a pronounced sea breeze there. 50s and 60s for many close to

the bay. mid 70s almost went 80s but couldn't do it. clouds, sun. maybe a holding pattern here as we head into the weekend. maybe slightly warmer late in the weekend. one of california's biggest health insurer plans to return some of its profits. blue shield says earnings are capped at 2% over cost. the refund policy is retro active to last year. they will refund $180 million. policyholders will receive a credit on their october bill. the arch income will be $80 for an individual and $250 for a family. nintendo says the new wii u will bring a new dimension to video games. it includes the functions of the previous wii controllers including a touch screen, camera, microphone, and

speaker. it can mirror game plays seen on the big play or act as a second screen. minute ten toe says the wii u will be available some time next year. a new facebook feature is promming new corns over privacy. it has to deal with a new facial recognition feature. once it's recognized it encourages facebook friends to tag them. facebook doesn't give users to avoid being tagged in the photo. instead they must untag themselves after the fact. yosemite national park is changing the way visitors can make camping reservations. starting today people will have to show id when they check into a camp site in the park. visitors will no longer be able to change the name on the reservation. later this summer the park will also stop releasing canceled reservations back to the online system.
