well northbound which is on the right pardon me and southbound which son the left. also this morning we are look at traffic on san francisco's freeways system northbound 101 looks good. let's go back to the desk. the mayor of alameda is taking action in response to that now infamous memorial day incident at a beach. jade hernandez tells us how the mayor is stepping in. >> reporter: we are live at crown beach this morning and the city mayor says what happened here along this beach will never happen again. >> i am sick at heart for mr. raymond and his family. you know and all the people who are on the beach that day including public safety. >> reporter: we spoke to the mayor of alameda right after last nights city council meeting. she told us the city would

create a web page. on it the transcribed 911 tape. he died after emergency responders waited on shore. the passer by eventually pulled the man to shore. they say they were not certified in shore base rescue. as for police, the 300-pound man was considered suicidal and possibly armed and dangerous. at last nights city council meeting many came forward to speak out about the tragedy. and coming up we will have more about why they say the drowning death seemed due to a political stance taken by emergency responders and why they feel this tragedy should not have happened. reporting live jade hernandez ktvu channel 2 news. your time now 6:02 and this morning two fires two of them in the berkeley hills are being

investigated as suspicious. let's take a look at the first fire. this is on cragmont avenue. firefighters responded to a car fire and then on the way they saw another fire. this fire was burning next to the front door of a house. >> it seemed like both started about the same time. or very close to the same time. so we are investigating that to see if there is any connection to the two fires. >> well now berkeley police and firefighters are investigating a possibility of arson. luckily no one was hurt in the fires. if you have any information about this, contact berkeley police. yet another early morning fire in marin county is also under investigation. this one started just after midnight at a home on cypress avenue. firefighters rushed here to the scene. you can see there was damage but we haven't heard of if anyone was hurt in this.

the cause of the fire is still under investigation. take a look at what is left of a car that was found fully engulfed in flames last night. this car was found about 11:00 on the union pacific railroad tracks at douglas and kerwin avenue. all of this is under investigation. all lanes are now open on highway 101 in palo alto. that is after a pedestrian was hit and killed. it happened just hours ago near the oregon expressway. three southbound lanes were shut down shortly after that crash. the cause is still under investigation. our time is now 6:04. a teenager accused of a fatal shooting will be charged as an adult. that decision could be made today. the 16-year-old in the plaid shirt there.

they were arrested in connection to that shooting. the older of the two young men was the main shooter. that infant is zach garcia was shot when his family was driving home from a baby shower. they think the shooting was a case of mistaken identity. tomorrow a memorial service will be held for the three- month-old. it will be held at the wood side chapel in redwood city. any donations can be made about a wells fargo bank. americans shouldn't panic about the sudden slow down in job growth. coming up we will have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with the latest polynumbers showing how americans feel about the president handling of the economy. and the senate votes today on whether to limit fees that stores have to pay to banks and credit card companies every time a debt card is swiped. today's vote is an effort to

block a federal reserve proposal to limit debt card swipe fees to 12 cents per transaction. time now 6:50. voters in richmond rejected a proposed sales tax hike. it would increase richmond sales tax to 9.75% to 10.25%. the richmond city council was counting on that measure passing to help balance the city's budget. in a special election in hercules voters voted to recall the mayor joan ward and councilman donald kuhne. voters chose william wilkins to replace mayor ward. a plan to redevelop treasure island could get under way by next year. san francisco board of supervisors voted 11-0 to

approve the $1.5 billion upgrade for the naval base. it includes 8,000 new homes special commercial and office space. the board is expected to get final approval next week. it will now be up to voters to decide on a bond measure to fix san francisco streets opinion they voted yesterday to place a $248 million road improvement bond on the november ballot. city officials are counting on the bonds approval to invest an extra $53 million in street repairs next fiscal year. time now 6:07. let's go to sal. what is happening at the toll plaza? >> it's getting busier head into the city. there is a little bit of slow traffic here. in a few minutes they will turn the metering lights on. people will be waiting at the toll splay. also this morning if we are look agent san francisco commute northbound 101 coming into downtown san francisco it

good morning, to you. welcome back. now we are hearing a small online conservative group was warning women on twitter three months ago to be wary of new york congressman anthony weiner. according to the new york times they noticed weiner was on twitter following many women on his twitter account. the conservative group contacted some of the women and warned them be careful of weiner. in at least one case weiner stopped contacting a woman identified by this group indicating he probably knew his online activities were being watched. this week as you know congressman weiner admitted he sent lewd photos to women online. president obama is

announcing some new initiatives to boost manufacturing jobs this morning. but as ktvu alison burns reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, more americans are losing confidence in how he is hands ling the economy. >> that is right. in just a couple hours president obama will be going to a community college in virginia to talk about an initiative that partners private companies with colleges to better prepare students for the manufacturing jobs of the future. it comes after 6-10 americans have a negative view of how the president is handling the economy and they don't think the recovery has begun. but during a news conference yesterday president obama said he's not worried about a double dip recession that americans should not panic and the recovery will take time. >> recovering from that kind of body blow takes time. and recovery will be uneven. and there will be times when we

are making progress but people are still skiddish and nervous. >> reporter: prior to last weeks disappointings report, the u.s. economy experienced three months of robust growth but still his opponents are taking aim. aisle have more on -- i'll have more on that in an hour. for now we are live in washington, d.c.. police in texas are searching for a psychic. this is video from a rural area where police received a tip from a self-proclaimed psychic that a mass grave of 30 children were hidden at a nearby farmhouse. after an extensive search involving cadaver dogs and the fbi. nothing was found. when the person called back with detailed knowledge of the farmhouse including blood on the back door, police grew suspicious. they are searching for the woman who called. 6:16. back here at home san leandro police are searching for two teenage girls accused of luring

two children into the van promising them candy. an eight-year-old and a nine- year-old told police they were walking at an intersection of carry drive sunday afternoon when they approached them and said they had candy in the nearby van. they ignored the teenagers and walked i way. one is 16 years old asian with short black hair. the other one was also about 16 years old, white, with straight shoulder length blond hair. we are getting new information about the woman's who's body was found in am garbage bag. the coroner identified the victim as maria orozco. the coroner says she died from trauma from the head. if you have any information please contact the sunnyvale

police department. time now 6:17. japan now acknowledging it was unprepared for a nuclear accident like the big one caused by the earthquake and tsunami. this is all part of a 750 page report that japan is submitting to the watchdog agency. workers hoped to shut down the reactors by early next year. that accident forced more than 80,000 people to evacuate from neighborhoods around the nuclear plant 37 the first tropical storm of the hurricane season is swirling in the eastern pacific. tropical storm adrian has winds of 60 miles an hour. that storm is 350 miles south of mexico but appears to be moving away from land. a new bill addressing the threat of rising sea levels in some bay area cities. this includes cities that contain the san francisco and oakland airports and the ports of oakland and redwood city. the bill requires an action plan in place by 2013 to deal

with storm surges and flooding. experts say sea levels will drastically rise by the end of the century. cal tran wants to test out a plan to use cameras that catch people that don't pay to use the toll lane. there are specific spots where they can get into the toll lane. the entry points charge tolls to the fast track accounts. however some drivers sneak into the toll lanes after the charge point. while the cameras would identify those cars and later send notices of unpaid tolls. if this test works, fines could be put into place. 6:19 is the time. let's go back to sal for a look at traffic. >> good morning, to you. i think we are starting off well this morning if you are driving at the bay bridge toll plaza. looks good if you are driving into the city.

warmup. the system will move into the north of us and give us a cool down. fog or low clouds. cool out there. sunny and then breezy. fog takes awhile to peel back. 50s, 60s and 70s. temperatures continue to run below average. we are gradually warming up. clouds and sun. warmer thursday. about the same friday. slight warmup looks like sunday into monday. this morning the price of crude oil is falling. it's now about $98 a barrel. down almost $1 from yesterday. the drop comes as oh peck ministers are meeting in vienna. saudi arabia has said it reports a price between 70-80 a barrel. nintendo's newest version of the wii includes a touch screen controller, front facing camera, microphone, and two speakers. the wii u will also broadcast in high def and 3d.

good morning, right now traffic is moving along nicely along northbound 101. just a reminder today is a day dame at at & t park. the game starts at 12:45. it ends at 3:00 so if you are leaving san francisco later, you will be dealing with baseball traffic. let's go back to the desk. take a look at this the driver of the big rig being sued after a horrifying crash. one man was seriously hurt in this. all caught on tape. you can see the big rig it toppled on top of a pickup truck. the 60-year-old driver of that

truck had a broken neck and crushed bones. he's suing the truck company $4 million to pay for his medical bills. it's called the wallow fire. now it's more than twice the size of chicago. this fire has burned more than 480 square miles. destroyed ten structures and forced evacuations as you can imagine. it's being blamed on an unintended campfire. a massive fire at a historic mill in rhode island sent one firefighter to the hospital. this started around 7:30 last night. flames and the plumes of smoke. you can see this from miles away. all of the city's 125 firefighters rushed to the scene along with the police and nearby fire departments. one firefighter had to be treated for dehydration.

not so bad as far as the reaction here in the u.s.. we'll keep watching. >> we will smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us on the ktvu morning news. the middle of the week now. it's wednesday, june 8th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. overnight two fires are now being investigated in berkeley and firefighters think it could be arson. both fires were reported on cragmont avenue very close to each other. tara moriarty is live on the scene with the first fire reported with more on the suspected connection. >> reporter: good morning. could an arsonist be on the loose? that is what this fire investigator is trying to figure out. he believes the fire started on the back end of this car. you can see where it melted the tires completely off and also where the flames lapped up the front of the house. now the investigator has been trying to pry open the hood to get a better look and determine exactly how the fire started.

this fire and another broke out within one block of each other around 1:00 in the morning. someone called in the first fire saying that the flames were very close to the house. police drove by another fire that was along the way. officials believe the two blazes may be connected. >> the second fire we initially had reports of individuals trapped in the building. fortunately they were able to because it was right next to the front door but they were able to extinguish the fire so there is no hazard or injury to the residence. >> reporter: again no one was hurt in either of those fires. we have no word on damage estimates. if that firefighter fi firefighterhadn'tbeensohighuphe ightnothaveseenthatdamage. .com -- >> we are live in berkeley i'm tara moriarty. also this morning the

investigation continues into a fatal police shooting in san francisco. that happened last night near buena vista park. investigators say officers shot and killed a suspected bank robber from southern california. they say the officers were forced to open fire after the man tried to run them over with his car. >> the actions of the driver that time drove directly at the officers putting their lives in danger. they feared for their own safety. and they at that point had to discharge their weapons to stop his actions. >> now the man died a short time later at san francisco general hospital. there are reports that the man is the so-called man in the photo gen-x bank robber. search is under way for a gunman that shot a teenager near a busy san francisco tourist spot. that happened yesterday afternoon at fifth and market street close to the westfield

shopping center. the victims injuries are not life threatening. right now there is no description of the suspect. time is 6:33. family members of missing nursing student michelle le say they still hold out hope she will be found alive. >> yeah we want to see the body. if they can just tell me they found something. something. >> michelle was last seen may 27th. investigators are investigating this case as a homicide. this morning the family still has digital billboards posted around the area saying the search is not over. apple is taking on a project that is out of this world. it's planning to build a new campus in the bay area in the shape of a spaceship. kraig debro is joining us live. he's going to tell us what this is all about. >> reporter: that is how steve jobs has characterized this

once owned by hewlett packer. >> think about that. it's rather odd. 12,000 people in a building in one building. but we have seen these office parks with lots of buildings and they get pretty boring pretty fast. so we would like to do something better than that. >> reporter: jobs says it looks like a spaceship has landed. it's a 40% increase from one infinity loop. 80% of the property will be landscaping and the service parking spaces almost disappear. they also plan to build an energy center that will generate primary power for the campus. last nights meeting wasn't a huge love fest all the time. i will tell you about the not so vailed threat that he made to the council if he doesn't get his way on this. time is now 6:36.

state budget negotiations are down to the wire. governor jerry brown says the talks are on the edge of a disaster. there is a june 16th deadline to meet that budget. in order to meet that deadline they have been working with a handful of republicans. if the republicans can with stand the pressure from conservative colleagues there may be a breakthrough. if not, california will face more drastic cuts. the tax expansion plan will give counties the money they need to house more prison inmates. low level inmates will go to county jails. right now the state prisons are housing 80% more inmates than they were built to hold. if the legislatures can't come up with a solution, the department of corrections may start granting early releases. they voted to cut their pay and the mayor by 10%. councils following the recommendation of a salary

setting commission. the commission recommends reducing the mayors salary from $127,000 to $114,000 and the council members from $90,000 to $81,000. they also will explore retirement benefits. 6:37. the san mateo county sheriffs office warning everyone to locken your cars. there have been three break ins in the past month. all have been in neighborhoods just west of -- investigators are still out there looking for more suspects. this morning all lanes of interstate 80 are back open after a big rig fell 30 feet from an onramp. that crash happened around 8:00 last night. the truck was traveling on the

onramp. that's when the driver lost control and flipped over its side. crews had to shut down two lanes of interstate 880 to clear the scene. the driver managed to walk away with a broken arm and minor cuts. >> that is an incredible story. 6:38. sal, anything happening out there? >> certainly nothing like that. >> good. >> yeah. we have traffic that is moving along slowly at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's cueing up to get into san francisco. i will be reminding you will if a day-time baseball game. which is unusual. today it's a 12:45 start against the washington nationals. that means the traffic going away from the city will be busier than normal as all the giants fans poor out. hopefully after a victory. northbound and southbound traffic moving along okay here at the oakland coliseum. that traffic is moving along

24th. the number of new cases in an e. coli outbreak has started to drop. there are still new cases but the trend is heading in the right direction. he also admits scientists may not be able to figure out what caused the illness in the first place. thousands of people are being diagnosissed with the infection since early last month. 24 people have died making this the world's deadlyist e. coli outbreak. there is a seafood fraud case under way. only half the seafood tested have dna of the species listed on the label. they say that fish labeled as red snapper, wild salmon and atlantic cod are other fish. as often as 70% of the time. this imposter fish is being called rock fish. the federal government says it's not how often fish species are substitutes. also next month residents
