cupertino. it wants to build another one in the same town. we'll tell you what's so unique about it. well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's wednesday, june 8th. two suspicious fires in the berkeley his. both were reported on kragmont avenue one block apart. tara moriarty is live with why firefighters immediately suspected sar and -- arson. >> reporter: firefighters were on their way to this fire when they spotted a fire on the way and noticed something that was out of the ordinary. they called out an arson investigator. he's on the scene now. he believes the fair started at the back end of the car k you can see where it melted off the tires and it also threatened this house. these fires happened within minutes of each other just before 1:00 this morning on the 400 and 500 block of cragmont.

a lot of elderly people live here. investigators say there are enough indications that these fires point to arson. >> and there wasn't an obvious sign of ignition there. it's being investigated also. but again, because of the timing of both the fires, you know, that -- that gives us some suspicion as to the origins. >> reporter: there were people trapped inside the home but crews were able to stamp it out with extinguishers and put it out safely. >> no one was hurt in either of these fires. this investigator will be out here for the next several hours. we'll keep you posted on the details. i'm tara moriarty, back to you. >> thank you. apple's ceo steve jobs is taking on a new project, one that has little to do with technology believe it or not. he's planning to build a new campus in the bay area in the space of a -- shape of a space

ship. kraig debro is live. he knows all about this. >> reporter: everyone is happy about it, i'm at the loop at 280 and deanza. steve jobs is known for a lot of things. a lot of people see him as the genous behind apple. last night he showed he can play hard ball to get what he wants. he last night he pitched a new plan for another building of apple. the building has been described as far out by someone. jobs himself says it looks like a space ship has landed. the 3.1 circular building can accommodate 12,000 employees. jobs made it clear last night what he will do if the council does not say yes. >> quick question, i think we want to know what the city

residents can benefit from this? >> as you know we are the largest taxpayer in the city and so we would like to stay here and continue to pay taxes. that's number one. >> okay. >> if we can't, we have to go to mountain view and take our current people with us and give up and over years sell the land here, the largest tax base would go away. >> reporter: that's the second public appearance for jobs this week. he attended the mac event at the moscone center earlier in the week. i'm gonna call some people knowledgeable in the industry to see why job has made this personal appearance again, the second one of the week, and why he made the presentation himself. he clearly has a lot of other people that could have done that. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, kraig. 7:04. san leandro police are looking for two teenaged girls accused of trying to lure two children into a van by promising them

candy. an 8-year-old and 9-year-old told police they were walking at the intersection of carrie drive on sunday afternoon when the two teenagers approached them and said they had candy in the van. the younger kids ignored them. congresswoman jackie speier will tour the site of the san bruno disaster with the head of the national transportation safety board. the ntsb is still investigating the september 9th blast. eight people were killed. dozens injured. and 38 homes destroyed. agency chairwoman herstman is expected to visit as well along with pg&e and local authorities. the ntsb's final report is expected late ther year.

bay area officials asking for help today. they are testing out a website that would help dispense medicine in the case of an infectious disease. the information will be used to create an emergency screening questionnaire that helps match people with the right medication. now, we're gonna put up a link on our channel -- channel 2 website, ktvu.com. just look under "web links." a blast from the sun unleashed this -- a firestorm of radiation. have not seen anything like this in five years. you are looking at an image of a medium-sized solar flare that nasa scientists captured. nasa said this appeared to cover almost half of the surface of the sun. president obama says the

american people should not panic about the sudden slowdown in job growth. coming up for you at 7:15 this morning, we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom on what the president will do today to highlight the importance of job training, get the american people back to work. 7:06. former san francisco mayor, gavin newsome is moving to marin at least temporarily. now that his wife is pregnant with their second child, the home is not big enough. so for the summer, she will stay with her parents. the stay is only until they can find a bigger home. there's no word on whether the bigger home will also be in marin or or if the newsoms -- or if the newsoms will return to san francisco. the board of supervisors approved a rule yesterday that will impose a two-hour limit to park at broken meters. muni requested the rule to keep

or 4:00 or so, that's when the games usually get out and that means extra heavy traffic on the bridge. 8 0 northbound, traffic moving along very nicely in both directions as you drive past the coliseum. it should be nice for you, if you are flying -- trying to catch a flight out of oakland. not a bad drive. a little bit of slow traffic on the way to the richmond bridge and then highway 4, slow traffic, a couple of minor fender-benders here and there. but 680 still looks okay. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. a few breaks in the clouds. i was at the apple store yesterday. a couple of people said, it's about time the sun was out. we had some yesterday. we'll have some today. we do have giants' baseball. sal touched on that.

. 7:14. president obama is unveiling some new initiatives today aimed at boosting manufacturing jobs. ktvu's alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom to explain how companies and colleges are working together. alison? >> reporter: er toly -- tori, that's right president obama is promoting this job training program that's intended to boost the company's manufacturing workforce. in about an hour he'll be going to a community college in virginia to promote what's being called a standardized

credentialing system. it involves private companies detailing the skills they are looking for so colleges can specifically credential students to fill those jobs. at the same time, public frustration with the president's handling of the economy is on the rise. a new "washington post" poll shows 57% of americans don't think the economy -- the economic recovery has begun. it's a message the president's opponents are hammering on the campaign trail. >> how are you enjoying your recovering summer? debate. a three-judge panel will hear arguments on whether the government can force people to buy health insurance. the obama administration appealed a florida court routeing -- court ruling that struck down the entire healthcare law including that controversial mandate. attorneys for 26 states and various businesses will be arguing against federal attorneys. and the senate votes today on whether to limit the fees that stores have to pay to banks and credit card companies every time a debit card is swiped. now, today's vote is an effort to block a federal reserve proposal to limit swipe fees to 12 cents per transaction that's down from the current average of 44 cents per purchase. al qaeda's number two man has issued a eulogy for osama bin laden. he says the slain terror leader terrified america when he was alive and would continue to do so in death. the number two man is considered to be the next

likely leader of al qaeda. he also criticized the u.s. for burying bin laden at sea and urged the pakistani people to rise up against that country's military rulers, describing them as traitors for allowing them to kill bin laden in pakistan the carl vincent arrived -- in pakistan. the carl sin vent arrived in -- vincent arrived in hawaii yesterday. the ship's commander is proud. the vessel departs for san francisco on friday. 7:17. pakistan says the death toll from a u.s. missile strike near the afghan border now has risen to 20. the attack yesterday targeted a tribal region that is home to several militant groups involved in nate toe forces

across border in afghanistan. officially the pakistan government, protested the missile strikes but it's widely believed to have secretly given intelligence information for some of those missile strikes. the ambassador for syria in france says someone imper percent nateed her and announced her resignation on a present -- impersonated her and announced her resignation on a tv. she said she was a syrian ambassador. the real ambassador said no, she's not quitting and vows to sue that television network. 7:18. one person in india is dead after being tram pepled by two el le -- trampled by two elephants. we want to warn you. some of this video is difficult to watch. four elephants entered the city, mauling a cow and attacking people.

one man died. many others were injured. so far two of the elephants have been tranquilized and extra police officers have been brought in. we're now hearing that a small online conservative group was warning women on twitter to be wary of new york congressman anthony weiner many times. according to "the new york times times" men women were on twitter with him. this week wiener admitted he sent lewd photos to women online. for the first time since 1994, when he graduated high school, tiger woods won't play in the u.s. open. yesterday, he announced he won't play because of lingering injuries to his left leg. tiger said his knee and his

east texas. earlier this week, the police received a tip from a self- proclaimed psychic that there was a grave out there with 30 children hidden at this farmhouse location. now, after a very extensive search involving cadaver dogs and a lot of police, the fbi says there's no grave that they've been able to find. but when the woman called back with even more detailed information about that farmhouse, including some blood on the back door, that made the police more suspicious. now they are searching for that woman who called in. 7:234. this morning, one -- 7:23. one man is recovering after the big rig he was driving fell 30 feet from an onramp. the crash happened in west oakland at 8:00 last night. the truck was traveling on the onramp that leaves from west grand avenue to the macarthur maze. that's when police say the driver lost control and flipped over the side. the truck landed on a grassy shoulder below. the crews had to shut down two lanes of 80 while they cleared

the scene. the driver managed to walk away from the crash with a broken arm and minor cuts. >> very serious stuff. and we go to that -- from that to sal. >> i've been looking at the chp list and checking in with them for you. there's nothing serious but there are some slowdowns. let's take a look at highway 4. it's backed up from antioch. it finally gets through. you can see a lot of cars coming up over the grade, coming into concord. so by the time you reach concord, it does get a little bit better and 680 you will have to deal with slowing from pleasant hill heading on south. the toll plaza this morning, it has been up and down, it was actually busier earlier. this is about a five, ten- minute wait into san francisco. this morning's drive in the south bay looks good. northbound 101 moving along very nicely, approach egg the

welcome back. 7:29. it's a bay area death that's attracted nationwide attention. alameda firefighters standing by and watching as a suicidal man drowned. ktvu's jade hernandez tells us that tragedy dominated last night's city council meeting in alameda. jade? >> reporter: yes, it did. residents spoke and the mayor said it will never happen

again. this morning we're live at crown beach. it's very quiet and tranquil here. but the mayor said a commission will be assembled to address this tragic drowning that happened on this beach and it will most likely be multiagency and it will be assembled soon. we spoke to the mayor shortly after the city council meeting. she said a web page will be created and the 911 dispatch call will be transcribed. she said the city is doing all it can to find out what went wrong on memorial day when the man threatened to take his own life and waded in the water on crown beach. firefighter says due to budget fights they weren't certified to try to jump in and police

say the man was -- the 300- pound man was a threat to others who would go in after hill. >> we've made one very big -- big important change by rescinding that policy. but that may not be the only thing we need to change. so we need to look at that. >> reporter: the mayor said again she'll be assembling a multi-agency commission. she didn't know how soon but she said as soon as humanly possible. she wants to make sure nothing like that ever happens on this beach again. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. the chp is investigator -- is investigating after a pedestrian was hit and killed overnight on the 101 in palo alto. it happened near oregon expressway. three southbound lanes were shut down short slip after the crash but have since -- shortly after the crash. but have since reopened.

at this point, we don't know the suspect's identity or why the person was on the road. an early-morning fire in marin county is under investigation. it harted -- it started just after midnight at a home in kentfield. firefighters from larks valley, corte madera rushed to the scene. this is what's left of a car that was fully engulfed by place. the car was found by 11:00 p.m. at the upian pacific railroad tracks. firefighters have determined that the car was abandoned on the tracks and intentionally set on fire. the incident is still under investigation. 7:32. an investigation couldn'ts now no -- continues now into a fatal police shooting in buena vista park. investigators say officers shot and killed a suspected bank robber. they say the officers were forced to shoot after the man tried to run him over with his

car. >> the actions of the car at that time, drove directly at the officers, putting their lives in danger. they at this point had to discharge their weapons to stop his actions. >> that man died a short time later in san francisco general hospital. there are reports he's the so- called gen-ex bank robber. but so far there's been no police confirmation from san francisco police. investigators are looking into a suspicious car fire yesterday that happened on highway 128 north of cloverdale and the body of a woman was found inside. authorities say there were no skid marks. the car did not crash. they say there was an open can of gasoline inside and the fire may have been ignited by a cigarette. but investigators are still trying to determine how that woman died. two tigers have been arrested in the -- teenagers have been arrested in the shooting that left a baby dead. it happened early sunday morning in east palo alto in what police are calling a case

of mistaken identity. mup for you in about 15 minutes from now, a de -- coming up for you in about 15 minutes from now, a decision could come down that will affect how the 17- year-old alleged shooter is charged. the redevelopment plan for treasure island has cleared a huge hurdle. san francisco supervisors unanimously approved the plan to build homes and office space on the island in the bay. some say it would cause too much traffic. final approval will be give be at a meeting next week. if that happens, the construction could start next year. it will now be up for voters to decide on a bond measure to fix the streets. the voters voted to place a $48 million road improvement bond. the city officials are counting on the bond to invest another

$53 million into street repairs next year. the bonds will need a two- thirds majority to pass. voters in richmond rejected a proposed sales tax increase. measure d would have went from 9.75% to 10.25%. the richmond city county was passing on the passage to help balance the budget. and people overwhelmingly voted to recall mayor joanne ward and councilman donna keeny. 86% voted to recall the mayor. 80% to recall the councilman. our time now, 7:35. well, starting today, yosemite national park is changing the way you make camping reservations. now you are gonna have to show i.d. when you check into a campsite in the park. also, you won't be able to

flights are resuming in argentina and chile after vol can ig ash disrupted travel. flights in and -- volcanic ash disrupted travel. flights in and out near the eruption site were cancelled. several people were evacuated. there's concerns that heavy rains could cause mudslides in the area. firefighters in arizona are opening -- are hoping their efforts overnight will keep a massive fire from spreading to two towns. the fire has been burning for 11 days and has forced evacuations. crews worked overnight on the grass in case it moved into the

two towns. decision may come today on whether a teenager accused of shooting and killing a 3-month- old baby in east palo alto will be charged as an adult. the 17-year-old is seen here. the 16-year-old suspect's in the plaid shirt there. they've been arrested in the murder case. now, police believe the older teenager was the main shooter. the baby is zach garcia, and he was shot when his family was driving home from a baby shower around 1:00 a.m. sunday morning. police think the shooting was a case mistaken identity. now, tomorrow, a memorial service will be held for the 3- month-old. the memorial service is tomorrow in redwood city at the crippen and flynn woodside chapel. donations can be made at any wells fargo bank. look at this. this sent one firefighter to a

>> on friday, firefighters from across the you country will gather at st. mary's cathedral for a public memorial service. a former san francisco high school football star has died after being shot last month. i want to show you video of david henderson from 2007. he's number 4 there. the incon -- the lincoln high school student was shot may 26th in the bayview district. he was 21 years old. he died on monday after doctors took him off life support. investigators say there are no suspects in that shooting. well, the trial of a suspected gang member accused of killing a father and his two sons may be delayed or even moved out of san francisco. the suspect, edwin ramos, is accused of killing tony bologna and two of his sons in the city's excelsior district three years ago. now, in a court hearing yesterday, prosecutors asked the judge to delay ramos's

trial because of an ongoing federal trial involving other suspected members of his gang. the defense wants the trial moved out of the area because of extensive media coverage. ramos is due back in court on june 24th. it's 7:47. a new study says that a large number of people who are ineffected with h.i.v. may not even know it until it's too late. the centers for disease control says of the 1.1 million people diagnosed each year, about a fifth did not know they had h.i.v. people who don't know they have the virus may be transmitting it to half of the 50,000 people who become infected every year. authorities in grease say they arrested an 18-year-old man who suspected -- who is suspected of hacking into fbi and international crimes fighting systems. they say the -- they say the arrest in athens cup -- comes after a two-year effort by

i'm tori campbell. >> grooming. i'm dave clark -- good morning. i'm dave clark. it's wednesday, june 8th. overnight, there were two overnight fires in berkeley -- in the berkeley hills, both on cragmont avenue. tara moriarty has more. >> reporter: given the proximity of this fire to the other one and the timing, those were sort of the red flags that alerted firefighters to get an arson investigator out here. now, the arson investigator is working right now and he believes that the fire started on the back end of this car. you can see where it actually melted the tires completely off and how it spread upwards on the front of the house, threatening the home. now, firefighters were on their way to the car fire when they noticed another fire less than a block away. these blazes happened within minutes of each other. just before 1:00 this morning on the 4 u.n -- on the 400 and 500 block of cragmont. it's a very quiet neighborhood.

bank robber because he wore a wool cap. but so far, there's no confirm mation from the san francisco police on that -- confirmation from the san francisco place on that. authorities say there were no skid marks after this accident here yesterday. they say there was an open can of gas inside and a cigarette might have ignited the fumes. they are still trying to determine how the woman died. 8:34. the redevelopment man for treasure island just cleared a huge hurdle. san francisco supper vicars unanimously approved a plan to build homes, offices and commercial space on that island in the bay. now, critics said the $1.5 billion project will cost too much traffic -- too much traffic often the bay bridge. the supervisors sided with the developerren -- sided with the

developer. they need to get approval next week and if that happens, construction could begin next year. and now voters will decide on a bond measure to fix san francisco streets. the board of supervisors voted to place a $248 million road improvement bond on the november ballot. city officials are counsels on that bond passing to invest an extra $53 million into street repairs next fiscal year. that bond will need a two- thirds majority to pass. voters in richmond rejected a proposed sales tax hike. measure d would have raised the taxes from 9.75% to 10.25%. the richmond city council was counting on that bill passing to help balance the city's budget. in a special election in hercules, voters voted overwhelmingly to recall the mayor joan ward and councilman donald kiehne. the voters were apparently
