mehserle's conviction. >> rallies are planned for tomorrow. some from are planning memorial, others are stepping in. >> reporter: it was an emotional day when the caskets arrived. right now those two caskets are inside the cathedral. the san francisco fire chief told us tonight, always difficult seeing one casket, always painful when you see two. tonight wearing their dressed blues, san francisco firefighters greeted two of their own. >> tony and vick loved the city. they loved working and serving the city. it's a huge loss. >> reporter: the flag draped casket holding the bodies of vincent perez and tony valerio are being carried into service. flowers are in place, some sent

from the city firefighters, some from strangers. >> i was working at safeway, a couple of people that -- i was shopping at safeway and a couple of people i know came up and talked to me. it's touched everybody. >> may they both rest in paradise with our love, honor and respect. the two men from station 26 battled fires today, and today they entered the cathedral today. >> it is true, we're like a family. it's like losing a member of your family. we don't clock in, clock out, when we work we're sharing meals together. it's very painful. >> reporter: after tonight's service, the two caskets will be brought outside and placed

to carry the funeral live tomorrow. our coverage continues right after ktvu channel 2 news at noon. we will also stream the service on our website ktvu.com. changes are being made to san jose state university emergency alert system following a recent murder suicide in a campus parking garage. only on 2, maureen naylor live at the university with the three things campus officials are doing right now to try and keep students in the loop, maureen. >> frank, following that murder suicide, the university says it's making changes to how soon it's going to alert via text, voice mail and e mail. >> there's been a shooting in the north garage. >> reporter: tonight marks two months since the university sent that alert. >> i actually got the news around 10:30. a friends of mine was 11:30. another person was 2:00 a.m. >> reporter: many students criticized the university for waiting 90 minutes before the

first emergency alert was issued. >> we heard very loud and clear after the last incident that people want instruction but they also want information. >> today the university spokeswoman outlines problems and solutions. one in every five people registered never received the message because they had a nonworking problem. another problem police were sending the alert from their phone. >> it's hard to use the alert system from a smart phone. >> reporter: so the university purchased a laptop from police. >> one of my friends who's a professor here she was teaching class and she was done at 8:45, she was in her office and she did not know until the next morning. to that's how bad it was on that day. >> it's good that they're listening to what students have to do and making campus safer. >> i think that would be a

bonus for everyone. because safety should be the school's number one concern. >> the university is encouraging people to sign up for an alert. saying text messages can take longer, they are also planning more training for the staff who puts out the alert. >> the university has used the alert system before. the first time was in november of 2009. the university says it received a number of complaints for sending out that alert in the middle of night which made officials he hesitant to send out other alerts. now the university says it plans to send out the messages despite any complaints. in about an hour and a half. friends and family members of michelle le plan to hold a vigil in hayward. the 26-year-old has been missing now for two weeks. family members say they believe le is alive despite the fact police are now treating the case as a homicide. tonight's vigil is set to begin at 7:30. tonight we know the

identity of a bicyclists killed yesterday near santa cruz. zachary park of santa cruz, this is a picture here of park's bike which was found on empire wade road. the highway patrol says park was found by a passing cyclist at about 8:00 a.m. the suspect's vehicle is described as a maroon -- police arrested the 58-year- old woman down in southern california where she was allegedly claiming the infant was her own. gallego is scheduled to return to court june 28. an independent panel appointed by the puc released its long awaited report today.

an independent arbitrator med with muni and union leaders. the contract would have frozen wages for three years and brought on part time drivers to reduce costs. the arbitrator will now use a final decision and pick the terms of the contract. the decision by that arbitrator is expected by next tuesday. police have cleared out a

homeless encampment near a lowes. lowe's officials said that customers had been complaining about homeless people bothering them. the city of san jacinto has hired homeless people to clean up coyote creek. >> reporter: for years it has been plagued with tons of trash. the goal is to have it clean all the time. with a babbling creek and palm trees above, this looks like a beautiful refuge tucked away. >> i contain food over here. >> reporter: this is where kenney lives. kenney showed us his kitchen, and bedroom. the city says over the last three year, 180-tons of trash have been pulled from the water. kenney was approach bid ed by the city to be part of a pilot

program to get paid to clean the creek. >> i am willing and able to get to the point where it's just right, what's left. >> reporter: congressman ricardo saw how successful it was. today city leaders announced federal funding was approved to employ 50 homeless people for the clean up effort. >> in exchange for that we pay folks or reward them with vouchers to safeway, wal-mart or sometimes with housing. >> reporter: those who live near the creek are pleased. >> i would like to be able to take my boys on a bike ride and ride ourselves to happy hollow and enjoy the trail a little bit more. but from what i understand it's not safe for us to go. >> reporter: kenney says he is grateful for the opportunity. >> if i can get a steppingstone, that's all i need. >> reporter: the clean up effort will target a 3.5-mile stretch of the creek that runs from 16th street down to center road.

the project begins on july 1st. reports live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu news. 10 people were arrested in sacramento following a large march and rally. people with disabilities and their supporters. the group is calling out lawmakers to work for jerry brown's proposed tax extension. the extensions will prevent further cuts. the arrests came after demonstrators brought the protest. the institute of california released a new report today with recommendations on how california could stabilize its tax revenue structure. the group is calling for the state to reduce taxes on personal income and restructure taxes on goods and services. increasing taxing would be a more reliability, predictable

and stable way to take in tax revenue. just a few days ago we were tracking record rainfall. low clouds and fog. the biggest player at least over the next few days hanging out on your parts of the shoreline. microclimates starting to resurface. right around point benita closer to point rays. we still have a solid deck of overcast from pacifica to san francisco. at least for the western half of san francisco and the low clouds will be on the increase over the next few hours. surging back into the bay. for tonight, partly cloudy skies. a little bit cooler, weekend tore cast. we -- weekend forecast. temperatures will continue to cool off as we head into saturday. first thing tomorrow morning, the coolest locations in the lower 50s for santa rosa and napa, san francisco 64. fremont 51 and san jose the lower 50s right around 52 degrees.
