honoring the firefighters who lost their lives fighting a fire. we are live in san francisco with the double funeral that will get under way in several hours. good morning, and we'll show you exactly how the city is staffing the fire departments across the city today. there is likely to be big delays because of the procession and all the people attending. we'll tell you what is happening and where the latest delays are cropping up. plus congressman anthony weiner standing strong this morning. there is a new poll supporting

his decision to stay in office. good morning, thank you for joining us it's friday june 10th i'm pam cook. >> and i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. here is steve. >> thank you very much. low clouds and fog regrouping coming back in. a little bit more in the way of a sea breeze. i think we bring temperatures down a few degrees for those that warmed up yesterday especially like fairfield, morgan hill. 50s and 60s and low 70s back to the coast. >> thank you. time now 6:01. topping our news a day of mourning for san francisco's two fallen firefighters. thousands are expected to be at today's funeral for vincent perez and anthony valerio. jade hernandez is covering the many visiting firefighters in the bay area. sal castaneda will have the funeral's impact on traffic. let's start first with tara

moriarty she is at st. mary's cathedral. >> there are quite a few signs up here no stopping, no parking. they will need this area clear for the procession and crews will be out here in the next couple of hours putting up blockades. the funeral mass will start at 12:30 this afternoon. many dignitaries including governor jerry brown will attend. last night there was a rosary here at got and gyri. in the hour before the week the two fallen firefighters passed by their fire house one last time. vincent perez grew up in burr know heights. the mayor says the city will show its grief and gratitude as only it can. >> what i would term is a grand attribute to the fallen

firefighters. their families will see and know how much our city sees and appreciates their sacrifice. >> reporter: all week people have been bringing flowers and cards to station 26. firefighters have flown in from all over the country to support their fallen brothers. perez and valerio died last week in what is called a flash over. a house fire that heated up to 1,000 degrees. this will be a full mass this afternoon with several people speaking. it should not end any earlierer than 3:00. there will be a lot of roads that are closed or experiencing more delays. with more on that let's check in with sal. >> tara this morning one of the biggest closures begins around 9:00 in the morning near geary boulevard. between the viz dare row and golf street right at the top of the hill where the cathedral is. both directions will be closed. that's where they will park a lot of the vehicles that are attending the funeral in the past when we've had these events a lot of police and fire

vehicles take up geary street. and then later on as tara mentioned we will see closures on interstate 280 heading down the peninsula. muni lines effected including the f market and the j church. if you want to get the to funeral today you can use the 38 geary from downtown. 38 geary will go to the cathedral area. it will have to go around but it will get there in a much better way than taking your car. there won't be any parking to speak of and it will be very crowded and a lot of delays. we encourage you to use transit if you would like to get to this area. let's go back to the desk. as we mentioned firefighters from around the country will be at today's funeral service. ktvu jade hernandez as more on

today's massive show of support and how some bay area departments will help san francisco stations. jade. >> reporter: any moment the firefighters gathered here will hold a briefing and dispurse to the very stations throughout the city. we want to show you i will get out of the way there is a parking lot just behind this white suv here. shows you the number of engines and trucks running from all over. we are near station 30. we spoke to the deputy chief that told us he has been overwhelmed by the support not only by the volunteers today but the public. >> it's unbelievable. everything from the citizens on the street where we brought the bodies up to the cathedral. the overwhelming support we got from people. the people stopped they put their hands over their hearts. people got out of their hearts and saluted. for these firefighters their cities are giving up some of their people. they are putting groups together and coming in here.

>> reporter: nine task forces were required to staff the city. 11 volunteered. counties including alameda, solano, and marin will be sending a task force. the fire department usually has 299 firefighters staffing the city today. 150 local firefighters will stay on duty. as a coordinated effort organized over the past couple of days. also here in san francisco this morning the crews from outside the bay area coming to pay their respects. we watched as firefighters drove in last night. they are housing their engines and warehouse at pier 50. representatives from fire houses all over are sending their own to personally bring their condolences. we spoke to one firefighter from west hollywood that started his career under vincent perez. he says being here in san francisco for today's services

is extremely important. reporting live in san francisco this morning jade hernandez ktvu channel 2 news. >> ktvu will provide live coverage of today's funeral that begins at 12:30 right after the ktvu channel 2 news at noon. we will also stream that service live on our website ktvu.com. time now 6:06. overnight san francisco firefighters raced to an apartment fire just hours ago. this one started shortly after 11:00 on mccallister right near the civic center. several people were treated for smoke inhalation but no serious injuries have been reported. the apartment building itself though suffered some major damage. you can see one of the persons being brought out by firefighters. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. now all lanes of highway 880 open again this morning after a big rig and several cars crashed. this happened near the oakland coliseum around midnight. several lanes were blocked.

the traffic slowed overnight. chp reports only one minor injury. nato now says a un resolution justifies targeting libyan leader moammar gadhafi with air strikes. coming up at 5:15 i mean at 6:15 we'll have more with increasing pressure on gadhafi to step down. a new poll suggests constituents of anthony weiner want him to stay in office despite the sexting scandal. when the congressman returned home to his new york apartment yesterday the news media was waiting for him. there has been calls for an ethic investigation. weiner says he's knot resigning and a new -- he's not resigning and a new poll shows that the congressman should stay on the job. california lawmakers plan to work through the weekend.

they are trying to hammer out a new state budget deal. the deadline next wednesday. democrats and republicans are still split over tax extensions. the taxes run out june 30th. governor brown wants to extend them until september. that is when the governor is hoping voters in a special election will approve another extension through 2016. $9.6billion budget gap still has to be closed. there is a new twist in the plans to build a park around a native american burial site in vallejo. protestors have occupied the site of the project for the past two months. now the nonprofit san francisco bay trail project announced it has suspended a $2,000 grant for the part. and the head of the vallejo's park warns that could force some big changes in the project. the trail project fund represents one fifth of the park's budget.

6:09. bart is celebrating its brand new bike station. later this evening they will hold an open house right at berkeley's ashby station. it will provide secure inexpensive parking for more than 125 bikes. bart has three other bike stations downtown berkeley, oakland fruitvale station, and the one at the 'em bark dare row station. it's a good day top bike. the city will be busy. >> yeah the city and 280 will be shut down this afternoon from about 3:00 to 6:00 as they do the procession. we want to mention it over and over again so you are not surprised about this. the best way to get out of the city today is to use 101 head on south. once you make it past 380 it's wide open for you. you can get back on 280 that way if you need to. let's take a look at the golden gate bridge.

is not looking to assassinate gadhafi. but a u.n. resolution gives them the green light to target military possibilities. allied nations have pledged more than a billion dollars to help libyan rebels. secretary of state hillary clinton says the libyan dictator has lost friends. >> we are escalating the political diplomatic and financial pressure on gadhafi and his isolation is deepening. >> reporter: but gadhafi refuses to step down. he said he will not surrounder and he went on the offensive shelling the rebel city of misrata. more than a thousand people are said to have been killed. time now 6:16. secretary of state hillary clinton has been overseas involved in international talks concerning libya, a rumor has popped up that reportedly she's interested in a new job.

as the head of the world bank. now reports are saying the secretary has been in discussions with the white house about stepping down as secretary of state next year to become the first female president of the world bank. the however, both the state department and the white house say that story is completely not true. there are strong doubts this morning that congresswoman gabrielle giffords will ever go back to doctor. doctors gave a grim update after she was shot in the head. it was an assassination attempt. congresswoman gifford is still struggling to communicate and her critical brain injuries will probably prevent her from returning to public service. early reports of the congresswoman's health were more optimistic but doctors are much more cautious about talking about her recovery. german health officials say sprouts are to blame for

killing thousands of people around the world. separate clusters of people that were infected by the bacteria. all the people that were sick at 26 different restaurants and cafeterias received produce from one organic farm. nearly 3,000 people have been sick. now officials will lift a warning on eating other vegetables from other farms. time now 6:17. four new areas in northern japan have just been added to the list of places effected by radiation from that damaged nuclear power plant. those new areas range from 20- 30 miles from the fukushima plant. they are outside that mandatory evacuation zone. however, authorities say elevated radiation levels have been found in all four of those areas. one month after two students were shot and killed in a parking garage at san jose state, the university says it's making changes to its safety alert system. many students criticize the university for waiting 90 minutes after the shooting

before sending out the first emergency alert. the university says there was a delay because police were sending the alerts from their phones. the school says police will now use a laptop to send alerts. >> we need to provide information. there is a heightened expectation in this day in age and we will do our best to meet that. >> 25-year-old cindy and 26- year-old kyle williams were found in a campus parking garage on may 10th. cindy's husband shot and killed the two honor students before turning the gun on himself. let's get you to where you need to go. sal is watching the roads and the bridges. >> all right dave and pam traffic is moving well around the bay area. so far if you are driving on highway 4 it hasn't become too busy here in bay point but we do have slowing in antioch. for the morning commute not that much different but it is lighter here in bay point and

680 looks good from concord to walnut creek. and westbound bay bridge has not become heavy at all. westbound bridge looks good into san francisco. and if you are driving in oakland north and southbound 880 that traffic is moving well. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. on this friday some sun already as you saw toward bay point. there is some more sun. just kind of peeking through the clouds. some of that low clouds. the fog has lifted some. and also usher in a little bit of a sea breeze. there is a lot of fog out there. you can see the system clipping northern california. 49 santa rosa. they were down to 46. i mean for this time of year that is cold. 50s for everyone else with the cloud cover or a few breaks in the clouds. there is that system last week we had our turn. now it's seattle and portland's return again. low clouds, sunny, and breezy. a little cooler today.

not so much an impact on the coast and bay. we'll bring you down a little bit. just a couple degrees. temperaturers upper 70s and low 80s. dave and pam. falling home prices continue to eat away at homeowner equity. the federal reserve now reports the average us homeowner has 38% equity that is near the lowest point since world war ii. two years ago homeowners had 61% equity in their primary residence. it can help if you can refinance. it came out just as mortgage rates hit an average low. the loan is slightly less than 4.5%. for a 15 year fixed rate mortgage the interest rate is 3.68%. the eighth week in a row that mortgage rates have declined. nasa scientists hope the skies stay clear this morning. an hour from right now, nasa has a five minute window to

links along a busy highway. to make sure motorists and animal lovers couldn't cry foul, the state police gave the little birds a police escort to safety. different story now. this is called the serious crime against marine animals in decades. five sales were found shot -- five seals were found shot to death. people in cape cod say it's not unusual to see seals washed ashore on beaches. it's against the law to hurt gray seals and if the criminals are captured they could face a $100,000 fine or year in jail. another vigil is planned tonight for missing nursing student michelle le. more than 100 people attended a vigil for le last night at mount eden park.

another will be held tonight where the 26-year-old grew up. le was last seen in hayward. her locked white honda suv was found a day later about a half mile away. police believe le was murdered but her family is not giving up hope. >> i hope we can find michelle alive. that's what we wish. please come home. we all miss you. police say they found blood evidence at kizer where they believe le may have been killed. investigators are expecting forensic evidence results sometime next week. police have identified several persons of interest but no interests have been made. the reward is now up to $65,000. bart today is providing a very special service for the hundreds of bay area firefighters attending today's funeral. those firefighters will gather in a special car in the back of every bart train heading to san

geary boulevard will begin to close they will start the closure at 9:00. it will be fully closed in both directions between visadaro eastbound and westbound. as a matter of fact, let me update that. the closure will be between webster and goth. and then eastbound geary. the at top of the hill that is where st. mary's cathedral is. a lot of people use goth street to get down to the freeway that come from pacific heights or marina. obviously that is not a great route today. you want to use another route and avoid goth street. muni lines will be effected. some of them will be rerouted including the f market and the j church and the 38 geary. it's still the best way to get

to st. mary's cathedral even though it will be slightly rerouted. you can use it to get from bart stations downtown. let's go back to the desk. firefighters from all over the country will be at today's memorial service at st. mary's cathedral. ktvu news was there when one crew arrived in san francisco last night. some of the firefighters from right here in the bay area are also making a strong show of support on this sad day. now ktvu jade hernandez will have much more on that story coming up at 6:45. and ktvu will provide live coverage of today's funeral beginning at 12:30 right after ktvu channel 2 news at noon. we'll also stream the service live on our channel 2 website ktvu.com. we're now learning more about what lead up to a stabbing attack near san jose state university. it happened right outside a mcdonalds restaurant on east san carlos street.

ktvu kraig debro just talked to police. what have you been able to find out? >> reporter: i learned there were a lot more people in the parking lot when police arrived. there were two officers and a patrol car. they were on routine patrol but when they passed by the mcdonalds they saw a huge group of people in the parking lot. one of the two people is stabbed in the entrances to the parking lot. we shot this video an hour ago. it's clear that emt or paramedics worked on someone. there was gauze wrappers and signs of bleeding everywhere. a 17-year-old and a 19-year-old are stabbed near the mcdonalds here at east san carlos and south third street. if you come back out live remember that is where the gauze is found in the entrance of the parking lot. but this is how wide spread this is. if you look over there off in the distance you can see wrappers on the ground over there. that is basically the second crime scene here. police found another victim in the parking lot ajessant to the mcdonalds parking lot. if you look at this video here you can see the wrappers on the

ground in that area as well. there is still evidence there. police say the injured men were all from opposing sides. people around here are a little surprised to see this kind of violence. >> you go to mcdonalds at all? has there been trouble here? >> not really. there is a lot of people that hang out here in the morning. i haven't seen any trouble. there were a lot of people out last night. so i don't know what that was about. >> reporter: when i talked to police they had no idea if this was connected to the downtown problem. later went to the hospital seeking treatment for the injuries they received. police are not saying if this is gang related yet. they tell me one of the people might be a gang affiliate but have not made a conclusion about the overall affiliation of the gang violence. reporting live in san jose kraig debro.

time now 6:37 the two men convicted of killing chauncey bailey faces life in prison without the possibility of patrol. they found yusuf bey iv guilty of ordering bailey's killing and mackey for driving the car. the guilty verdict gives the family some relief. because of the multiple murder convictions they face life in prison without the possibility of patrol. a stunning revelation is certain to fuel the controversy tied to that tragic drowning at a beach. several firefighters stood and watched as they watched a suicidal man die from drowning.

the contra cast that times have obtained internal records saying the department had money for training but never used it. a suspected cock fighting operation was found in west marin. 400 roosters were euthanized. officers say the owner of the property was a suspected child molester that committed suicide last month in the middle of a sex abuse investigation. the marin humane society said it got a tip that that man was breeding rooster ons his property. the rain bow flag that flies in san francisco's castro district there is in the middle of a controversy. the meeting was held last night to talk about how the community can have more input about the flying of the flag. now a debate started in march where some of the residents wanted the flag to be flown at half staff after the death of actress elizabeth taylor. the business group says when

they maintain the flags since the late 1990s they turned down that request. 6:39 is the time right now. back over to sal. how is the toll plaza. >> it's busy. you know it's surprisingly on this friday it's so slow. you can see all of these people. i don't know why i'm surprised. friday sometimes we see light commutes. maybe that is it. it is backed up all the way out to the 880 over crossing. it's going to get lighter in awhile. i thought it would be light all morning long. all right let's go out and take a look at the commute on highway 4. same thing goes here it is pretty slow. i keep checking in with chp. they don't report anything on highway 4 that is blocking lanes. there is an injury accident that could be rubber necker delay there. if you are driving in marin county southbound 101 traffic the traffic is moving along okay. if you are driving to southern marin there are delays we are

hearing from one of our viewers there are delays southbound 101 between mill valley and the waldo grade. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. there are some clouds around. there are breaks in the clouds. we will see that burn back to the coast. a little bit more of a sea breeze today. temperatures which came up yesterday about 3-5 should ease back about two or four or three to five as well. some overcast but it's not as solid as yesterday. sunny and breezy. cooler today. we will carry that into your weekend. cooling continues a rather decent system move into the pacific northwest. we will rebound monday and tuesday with warmer weather. pollen count continues to favor the grasses which is way up there in the high. still trees and weeds held check. satellite image does show weak system driving across the northern part of the state. that has picked up the sea breeze. west, southwest at sfo and west, southwest at 22 at

evacuate. fire officials say even if the weather continues to cooperate it could take weeks before the fire is put out. we are getting a better idea of what happened the day a man fired a gun at a big five store in watsonville. >> he's walking back toward me. oh my god he just fired. he just fired. >> shots fired. >> he just fired. he's walking back toward me. >> what's he shooting at? >> i don't know i just got underneath the desk. >> police showed up moments later and shot and killed the man with the gun. police say miranda padlocked the front doors, took the gun from a display case and fired several shots. investigators say it's unclear what lead up to that violence. this will be a busy traffic day. sal is watching the commute now. >> that is right. we are looking at things all over the bay area. one of the things we will watch

is highway 4. westbound highway 4 near the grade there has been a collision in one of the lane there is. i will show you how slow traffic is already coming up to the collision. there was a crash eastbound highway 4 at port chicago but also westbound highway 4 after willow pass road. tow trucks are with a pair of vehicles. one of them is in a center divide. there is one on the shoulder. it could be we have heard there was a problem perhaps a vehicle getting flat tires in the area. that is why so many cars have been pulled over here getting flats. that would be terrible really. you are driving to work and get a flat tire and it has happened to a lot of people. highway 4 as we pan all the way out there you can see it looks like what was there has been cleared. just be careful in that area. let's go out and take a look at westbound bay bridge that is also slow get into san francisco. this mornings drive looks good. a little bit of slowing in

time now 6:56. alaska is about to release thousands of e-mails sent by sarah palin while she was governor. she is touring the country and might run for president. 24,000 of her e-mails may be released today. she said some weren't meant to be released to the public but the state released them because the media asked for them. a sour pipe in san bruno was the most likely cause. 16 months before the explosion a new sewer line was installed on earl avenue that crosses ten inches between the transmission line. that was the site of the september ninth explosion. now the report from the independent panel reviewing the pipeline explosion says the ground shaking from the sewer work could have damaged the pg&e gas line. >> chest check in with sal. what are you seeing? >> we are seeing heavy traffic around the bay bridge toll plaza. it's backed up for a 20 minute
