is it gang-related? well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm claudine wong in for tori campbell. it's friday, june 10th. it is a day of mourning in san francisco an estimated 5,000 people are expected to attend today's funeral for two fallen firefighters. ktvu's tara moriarty is at saint mary's cathedral and begins our coverage. tara? >> reporter: well, this will be a very jam-packed church this afternoon. as you mentioned, thousands of people will be -- will be here. the media has taken up a full block of parking and the police are here. if you are planning on attending, you might want to take mass transit. many dignitaries, including governor brown and nancy pelosi, will be attending. last night was the rosary here at geary and goff.

many watched as they loaded the draped caskets inside. they did pass by their firehouse in diamond heights. vincent perez grew up in bernal vites. bernal heights. anthony valerio grew in the area and he loved to surf and bake san francisco sourdough bread. >> what i would attribute to the firefighters, their families will know how much we appreciate their sacrifice. >> reporter: now, all week people have been bringing flowers and cards -- cards to station 26. firefighters have nobody in from all over the country to support their -- thrown in from all -- thrown -- have flown in

funeral, they include governor brown, congresswoman nancy pelosi. some of the speakers include joanne hayes-white, the captain of fire station 46 as well as vincent perez's brother and one of anthony valerio 'long-time partners -- anthony valerio's long-time partners. we'll be streaming this service live on our website at ktvu.com. 7:05. just about two hours ago, san francisco emergency crews rushed to a fire in the haight district. that's where they found the body. the body was found in buena vista park. now, police and arson investigators are still there at the scene. there's no information about that victim. we'll bring you additional information as it comes in. 7:05. right now, police are investigating a stabbing that left two people injured near san jose state university.

kraig debro joins us live now with more on what led up too this it -- up to this attack. kraig? >> reporter: forming, claudine. behind me is one of the scenes that we showed you earlier this morning. just spoke to the cops this mo -- this morning. they say they were driving by when a group of 50, 60 -- 60 people were standing in the parking lot of this mcdonald's. one of the individuals was stabbed and at the entryway. you can see clearly that the emt and the paramedics are there, there's signs of a person bleeding. police say a 17-year-old and 19- year-old were stabbed at this mcdonald's. if he become back live -- that's the that's the parking lot right there -- that's the parking lot right there. take a look at this video. wrappers on the ground. same situation you saw on entrance to the driveway there. we've been talking to a lot of people and they say they heard

sirens, a lot of commotion. police say the injured demanded -- police say the suspects demanded -- >> i haven't seen any trouble. there were a lot of people out last night, though. so i don't know what that was about. >> reporter: big festival downtown san jose. a lot of the people spilled out close to san jose state. a school is in the summer session right now. there's no information to suggest or other -- or -- from police or otherwise. police say one of the people involved in the fight had a gang-re-- had a gang affiliation. but they don't know if this is gang-related. back to you. >> thank you, kraig. it's been one month since two students were shot and killed in a parking lot at san jose state university. coming up at 7:20. we'll tell i how the university is making changes to its safety

alert system. 7:07. authorities in tracy say they've dealt a big blow -- dealt a big blow by arresting 30 suspected gang members. more than 200 officers from federal, state and local agencies were involved in the raid. it was called "operation gateway." because of the city of tracy's position. those arrests follow the arrest of 75 others on tuesday in merced and madera counties. well, there is a new twist in the controversial plan to build a park around a native- american burial ground in vallejo. protesters have occupied the site of the glen cove park project. now, bay trail project has suspended a $2,000 grant. the head of the vallejo parks warns that could drastically scale down the project. those funds represent roughry a -- represent roughly a fifth of

the project. we want to go back to sal castanedo. sal? >> that's right. as firefighters begin to arrive, we'll keep you up to date on that. a lot of them are already in city. but there's some backup at the toll plaza that you have to deal with getting into san francisco which is somewhat surprising. it's back up -- barked up like any other days. there are a lot of people coming in today and it's backed up at least for a 15-minute wait and the traffic is okay on the bridge. northbound 880. that traffic looks good driving past the coliseum. if you are on the peninsula, so far no traffic delays on 101 or 280 in and out of san francisco. >> on this friday, a lot of low clouds, there are some breaks in the clouds, the fog bank is going to get helped along with cooler air spilling in. last weekend, it was officer turn. seattle and portland were pretty nice.

still no word about a missing contractor trapped at an old power plant in florida. look at these pictures. the company tore down, demolished a boiler, one that's big enough to make up about a fourth of the plant. but there was a 67-year-old employee inside it when it collapsed. crews are bringing in k-9 units searching the rubble. deputy sheriff warren sneak lewis shot and killed during a manhunt for two teenaged murder suspects. he was serving a warrant when there was a gun battle. five people have been taken into custody, including murder suspects. hit colleagues describe lewis as a gentle soul. one month after two students were shot and killed in a parking garage at san jose

state, the university says it's making changes to its safety alert system. many student criticized the university for waiting 90 minutes before sending out the first emergency alert. the university was a delay because the police were sending alerts from their home. they will now use laptops to send the information. >> i think that's great. >> the two were found in the parking garage. police say the woman's husband shot and killed the two before turning the gun on himself. we'll hear from mex dan president -- mexican pred felipe calderon on sunday. students asked him to give the speech and send the message the need for social justice.

are expected to attend the funerals for the two fallen firefighters. the funerals will be held at saint mary's cathedral. last night hundreds filled the cathedral for the wake. there was a lot of emotion. but there was also laughter. mourners learned vincent perez's first rescue might have been his brother who got stuck in the mud. ktvu's tara moriarty is outside of saint mary's cathedral had morning and she will update us for the final preparations. now, geary boulevard will be closed between vizadera office and golf. and then later, all lanes of 280 will be closed off to the ceremony exit as the precession makes its way to kolma.

as you might expect, these changes will have a huge impact on traffic. 7:30. as we've been telling you, firefighters from all over the nation will be at today's funeral service. ktvu's jade hernandez has more on today's massive show of support from the visiting firefighters and from firefighters right here at home. jade? >> reporter: the briefing here at station 30 just wrapped up. that means that the firefighters who volunteer that their -- who volunteer their time to city are making their way across the city. we listened to the fire chief as he addressed the firefighters just about 30 minutes ago. >> half of our on-duty crew today will be at the service. they can only do that because you guys stepped you and game here to support us. this morning -- stepped up and came here to supporting. >> reporter: this morning, the firefighters met for the coordinated effort. it's taken days to get all of

the details ironed out. today, 150 local firefighters will stay on duty and work with the crews. also here, crews from outside the bay area, we watched as firefighters from los angeles county drove in last night. they are just one of the crews housing their engines in a warehouse at pier 50. representatives from fire stations all over personally sent their own condolences. we spoke with one firefighter who worked in -- who worked under vincent perez. >> it's a way of life. it's a second family. when i heard that lieutenant perez had passed away, i felt like a family member had died. to come up here, i don't think

i had to, it's something you to for your family. >> we've been watching the fire enjoy -- engines and trucks leave. each volunteer crew will have a local crew assisting them to help them navigate san francisco. we're headed to 19th and if yousome and we'll follow firefighters' volunteer efforts and we'll bring that to you later on. b.a.r.t. is providing special service for the hundreds of bay area firefighters attending the funeral. those firefighters will gather in a special car in the back of every -- of every b.a.r.t. train headed to san francisco. they will -- they will arrive from the station which is about a mile from the ka she dray. we'll provide live coverage at 12:30 right after -- right after the news at noon. we're also going to stream the service live at ktvu.com.

7:33. overnight san franciscos -- san francisco firefighters raced to an early-morning apartment fire several people were treated for smoke inhalation. no serious injuries. the apartment building did suffer some major damage. you can see that the firefighters were quite busy bringing out some of the residents. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. all of the lanes on highway 880 reopened this morning after a big rig and several cars crashed. it happened right near the oakland station. the chp reports only one minor injury. a stunning new revolution and the tragic drowning at alameda beach. several firefighters watched as the man drowned. the fire chief -- apartment -- the department fire chief said

history. casey seagal is in springerville with the latest on the firefight and the controversy. >> reporter: yeah, claudine. in fact, we have good news to report to you. we're getting containment numbers finally. 5% containment. it doesn't sound like a huge number but according to the u.s. forest service, that's certainly a large feat for the firefighters on the ground, considering more than ten days this thing was burning at zero- percent containment and out of control. it is still out of control and it's getting closer and closer too the new mexico state line. so people in those communities are now bracing for the worse. but when we talk about the square miles of this fire -- of this fire that it's damaged, more than 500 square miles. that's roughly the size of the city of los angeles. you can believe that? it really puts things in perspective. a little bit of controversy here because there have been a number of lawsuits filed in the

state of arizona between victimmallists and the u.s. forest service in terms of thinning out the brush of these national forests. some are saying if those lawsuits hadn't been filed that the brush wouldn't have been as thick and therefore, this fire wouldn't have been as bad. so there a little bit of a blame game -- of a blame game going on right now between some of those villal groups and state leaders here in arizona. but the resources don't to -- continue to pour in here. more than 3,000 firefighters from all over the cut have converged -- all over the country have converged. some 7,000 people from this community, still out of their homes this morning. dave, that's the latest. back to you. >> thank you for the live update, casey. thank you. back here at home an independent panel says construction work to replace a

sewer pipe in san bruno probably was the cause of increased stress on a nearby pg&e gas line that eventual slip blew up. now, 16 months before the gas pipeline explosion a new sewer line was installed on earle avenue that crossed 10 inches beneath the transmission line of glenview drive. this report says the ground shaking from the sewer park could have damaged the pg&e gas line. that -- that panel criticized pg&e for not properly inspecting the pipeline during that sewer work. three southern california members of congress will appear to -- appeal to jerry brown to opt out of an immigration program. under that program, the fbi shares the fingerprints it receives and those prints are used to identity people here
