live in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty. dozens of san francisco firefighters have lined up for their colleague. and firefighters respond to a call in the side multiple stabbings in the city. we'll tell you why this is part of a pattern in the city.

good afternoon. i'm claudine wong in for tory campbell n about 30 minutes, funeral service also begin for two san francisco firefighters who died in the line of duty last week. we have team coverage of today's services but, first, we wanted to give you a look at what's happening right now. here is a live look from the city. here is a firetruck making its way to st. mary's cathedral, carrying the bodies of the firefighters headed to st. mary's. we do have live cameras throughout the city and in the cathedral. you can see it there. there is the gathering that is taking place, the american flag flying over the entrance of the cathedral as they wait for the procession to finally arrive. we are taking a live look now inside st. mary's cathedral. again, we have multiple cameras throughout the cathedral and the city, watching as this city comes together to mourn the loss of the two firefighters. this procession started about 45 minutes ago in dali city.

the bodies were carried on two firetrucks specially rigged to carry their caskets. we do have crews inside and outside. everyone is waiting to pay their respects to the two firefighters. jade hernandez has been following the fire crews providing backup support to the city. we want to begin with tara moriarty who is live outside the cathedral joo. the bells just started ring here and hundreds of firefighters are now lined up right in front of the church. if you take a look behind me, you can see it is a sea of blue. they have come from chicago, new york, miami, canada and even as far as england. engine 26, as you mentioned, will be pulling up in about 15 minutes or so along the great highway with those flag-draped caskets of the two fallen firefighters. the streets around st. mary's are blocked off. there are two trucks extending

a jie gigantic american flag. many dignitaries, including governor jerry brown should be arriving shortly. now, we are hearing that five, possibly 6,000 people will be here. lieutenant vincent perez grew up in vernal heights. he went to reardon high school and friends say he loved to restore vintage cars and cruise them down mission street. anthony vialerio grew up in the city. loved to surf, fly gliders and bake sour dough bread. neither firefighter had any children, but they leave behind many family members. >> means a lot to us and the outpouring of support from san franciscans have done for us.

we have had firefighters coming, delivering pizza and barbecue, anonymously. it's touching. >> it's a fraternity. we put ourselves on the line all the time. when somebody is lost, you feel it. >> they died battling a house fire in diamond heights last week. they got caught in what's called a flashover, a fire that heated up to more than 1000 degrees. the funeral is said to start here in about a half hour and it is expected to last about two hours. we have security on hand as well as dozens of officers from the san francisco police department. the public is welcome to attend although parking is very difficult. you should take mass transit if you would like to come to the funeral. we are live in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty. thousands of people are attending today's funeral for those fallen firefighters and

the list of dignitaries includes california jerry brown, lieutenant governor gavin newsom and congresswoman nancy pelosi. today's speakers include. >> today's funeral will have a big effect on traffic in san francisco. busy gary boulevard has been closed since 9:00 a.m. during to the service at is the mary's cathedral. during the funeral, a mile-long motorcade will head out to holy cross cemetery. southbound lane of 280 will be shut down during this time. those closures are expected to be in place from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. the procession is also going to slow down muni. here is a list of the routes that will be delayed or canceled so commuters or anyone in that area should be prepared. crews around the bay area have come to cover san francisco so colleagues of the

fallen firefighters can attend today's service. ktvu's jade hernandez reports that within the past hour, backup fire crews had to respond. >> reporter: that's right. they had to go out to cove the fire need. we are down the street from one of those fires that brought out the task force from hayward. we watched as this task force left their temporary fire station in the mission. the task force was part of a coordinated effort to cover the city for san francisco firefighters attending today's funeral. it took days to device. early this morningings station 30 became a staging area for 122 task forces, all 150 firefighters gathered. deputy fire chief pat gardner addressed the crews from counties: half of our duty crew is going to be out to service and they can only do that because you guys stepped up and came here to support us.

>> reporter: at 19th and folsom, mission station 7, san francisco's battalion chief briefed hayward men on the obstacles they might find here in the area. firefighters had left for the funeral. for the incident commander of the deadly fire, instead of attending the funeral, he said that he would stay behind saying that would be the only way to pay respect to tony and vinny. >> this week has been the most difficult time of my career. but these guys make it so much easier because we are covered. >> reporter: every fire station in san francisco but station 26 isemaned by a different city today. we drove by station 26 in the diamond heights area. it was closed. station 26 was lieutenant

release of former b.a.r.t. police officer johannes mehserle. mehserle is scheduled to be released from jail on monday while only serving 1212 months. >> judge perry skewed this trial so that the results would come out to the jury's credit, they did findmehserle guilty of whom sigh, all albeit involuntary homicide. and then judge perry who had the opportunity to sentence him harsher, denied us that opportunity. >> one organizer expects the rally to be peaceful three people were stabbed and two more hurt in a brawl

outside a san jose mcdonald's. kraig debro has more on what police are saying. >> reporter: thank you. this is another example of the increase in violence this year in san jose: i saw my friend. >> reporter: the mcdonald's is a block from san jose said and two blocks from the museum in downtown. the chief says the participants may have come from a downtown event called music in the park we found a dozen people injured. some were hit by a bottle, some were stabbed. >> reporter: officers spotted a group of people. outside of a mcdonald. when police pulled up, those who could got away: this there passing groups that were chipping on each other, and started a fight or was it gang motivated? >> reporter: a 15-year-old and

17-year-old received stab wounds and were taken to the hospital. others took themselves to the hospital. no one died last night but that's an incident that can and has led to death. in may, a murder-suicide inside a parking garage on the campus of san jose state not only shocked the student body but added to the total the so far this year, there have been 23 homicide in the san jose police department's jurisdiction this year, three ahate of last year's pace and summer has not yet officially begun. >> we do anticipate historically there will be an uptick. your job is to be out there working in the community to make sure that it's safe and let the community know, gang members, programs, that because there are layoffs looming that this is an opportunity for them to claim turf, we are here to tell them you cannot. >> thanks, kraig.

you are taking a live look from our news chopper of the procession making its way to st. mary's cathedral. there are actually two firetrucks in that pro carrying the bodies of 48-year-old lieutenant vincent perez and a 53-year-old anthony vialerio making their way to st. mary's cathedral as everyone says good- bye. a very, very difficult time for the city, very somber tribute as they say farewell to these firefighters. this is inside st. mary's cathedral at this hour and you can see that the pews are beginning to fill up. they have an overflow room downstairs for 400 more people. they are expecting thousands to come to this event. they are actually expecting 5000 firefighters to be there, to be a part of the procession that will follow the funeral service, 200 fire engines. we know that people have come from across the country to be a

part of the services. the service is expected to start in just about 15 minutes. well, friends and family held a memorial in troy, michigan, for dr. jack kervokian. more than 150 people attended the public service in a cemetery chapel in the detroit suburb. kervokian's niece said he wanted to give gravely ill people a choice in how they were going to die. at one point, he served eight years in a michigan dan prison. he died at 82-year-old. a group of surgeons in boston are now talking about a transplant that gave a woman a new face. that woman had half of her face torn off by a friend's chimpanzee. >> i'm happy to report that the team has achieved tremendous success in providing ms. nash

with a full face transplant. the face that her brother steve has described as simply beautiful. >> a 200 bound chimp named travis destroyed her face and severed her hands. actor russell crow is back tracking about harsh comments he made about circumsion. he said, circumsion is bar baric. he later back tracked. crowe is the father of two sons arizona fire crews say for the first time in two weeks, they are making progress in

fighting wallow. the wind has let up. that fire is now 5% contained. the fire burped more than 6 up square miles across arizona. it is now headed towards the new mexico border. thousands have been evacuated from their communities. doctors in joplin, missouri, say a rare fungal infection is affecting survivors of last month's tornado. it is caused by soil or material becoming embedded under the skin. people with weakened immune systems are more susceptible. three of the five patients treated died. but doctors noted that those people had other medical problem. a walk began on the marin side, about 6:30 this morning. it's meant to en courage health and wellness among the african american youth the organization tries to health organizers are especially concerned about the risk of heart disease which is the number 1 killer in the

70 right around mountain view. palo alto. 59 in oakland. mid-60s napa. a few degrees warmer than yesterday for santa rosa. the rest of us, very similar to how we have been. we continue to watch troughs move over california as they do, bringing in cooler air and that cooler air will keep us below average for this time of year. so a light jacket will probably keep you comfortable for the weekend. any rain is going to stay to the north. we're going to be dry. i guess that's what's important at this point. we just wants dry weather. the forecast here noticed by the afternoon, the clouds developing over the coast line. some us won't even see the clearing along the immediate coast line. the rest of us, mostly sunny skies but through the overnight hours, it will be back and tomorrow morning, we'll be dealing with mostly gray skies once again, partly cloudy for the afternoon. this trend is going to last through the week. low clouds, fog, cool air mass

in place. a few eighties out there, but not as many as we saw yesterday. 77 in con court. 82 expected in antioch, closer to the coast. 62 in san francisco. 58 degrees expected pacifica. widespread 70s in and around fremont, down the mountain view, 74 san jose, 80 degrees for morgan hill. get back to the coast and it's cooler. 60 degrees expected half moon bay for the rest of the bay. the clouds are not going away. temperatures will run cool for this time of the year. we warm up again into the 80s for the in land areas but we are 11 days from summer and we have not seen much warmup. >> it warmer than it was a week ago. >> true. the plane that was known for making a landing in the hudson river will be arriving at its new home in the aviation

we want to go back live now to tara mother quart, outside st. mary's cathedral in san francisco where funeral services are set to begin for the two firefighters. >> reporter: we are about five minutes from the services. i did notice in standing amongst the crowd that there were about 20 nurses from san francisco general hospital. they had worked on tony valerio and they were here. they took the day off to show their support. it is a sea of blue behind me here. we have hundreds of firefighters from all overt united states, chicago, new york, miami. even as far as canada and england. engine 26, as we mentioned, will be pulling up in a minute. it contains the flag-draped

casket of the two firefighters. we take a look from our chopper 2. you can see just how massive this area is filled with people, filled with emergency vehicles. we have the bomb squad on hand. we have highway patrol. police, sheriff deputies and about an hour ago, they were practicing therefore may go, the priest walked in in a procession with some crosses. and many dignitaries, including governor jerry brown should be arriving shortly. he will probably arrive just before the funeral here. again, lieutenant vincent perez and anthony valerio were killed in what was called a flashover in a fire that took place last week in the diamond heights neighborhood. you can see all the people here. we even have archbishop reardon, this is the high school that perez went to. we do have a lot of lookouts. people that are stationed up

and above in the buildings and they are keeping a watchful eye because we have so many dignitaries here, they want to err on the side of caution and make sure that everything is going smoothly. >> we are being told that the procession is very close to arriving at st. mary's cathedral. i know you have been talking to firefighters all morning and you talked to people from as far away as boston, canada, people from across the country. obviously, the family that is the firefighter family is very tight. what are you hearing from them as far as their emotions for being here and being a part of this and letting san francisco know that they are with them in these difficult times. >> they call it a fraternity and they say this is a time when they need to come together. any time they've had troubles, that san francisco has been there for them and they wanted to know their support. they feel as though this is their family. when you join the firefighters,

when you join that team, you really do become part of a family. you are in the trenches with these people, work with them around the clock. they become very tight. they understand the unity and really wanted to stand in solidarity with all of the official, all the different law enforcement agencies and firefighters from across the entire western hemisphere, really. we have canada that showed up here and england. so, very somber feeling here, heavy hearts, obviously. this is something that has not happened for decades. we lost some firefighters back in, i believe, 194 in a hotel fire. but to lose two was, you know shall obviously a double blow to this organization and peopledefinitely shaken up. a lot of tears that have i have seen over the week. perform friends from the fire department as well as people you just meet on the streets. >> we want to let people know that they are looking at the

screen right now and you can see two of our live cameras, one showing the street where, obviously, so people are standing alongside firefighters. on the smaller rock from the screen, we are able to show you from our chopper view the two firetrucks waiting to head in there. one is carrying 48-year-old vincent perez and the other, 53- year-old anthony valerio as they make their way towards st. mary's cat cathedral. mayor gavin newsom is one of those who came here to pay his respects. l.t. perez has been with the fire department for 21 year. before that, he was a
