i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. one man is fighting for his life following an overnight shooting. it happen on tennyson road, just a half block from the hayward situation. jade hernandez has been talking with investigators to find out what head to the gunfire. >> reporter: good morning. this is a well-worn path that leads down to tennyson and underneath b.a.r.t. overpass where this shooting took place. one person we spoke to said the area needs better lighting. >> i know that this is a bad area. i know that tennyson -- i'm from l.a. i moved out here. i work at the convalescent hospital. but the area out here i heard is not the best of an area -- the best of an area. >> reporter: hayward police

said the gunmen covered this faces during the robbery. hayward police scoured for the two robbers with k-9 officers after the shoots -- after the shooting. >> a husband and wife were making their way home from the b.a.r.t. station with when two young men approached them near tennyson. the gunman ordered the couple to turn over their belongings. they resisted. the husband was shot twice. he's in critical condition. the wife was not hurt. police are still looking for the gunmen. and they only have vague descriptions of the robbers. they were wearing white t- shirts and dark-colored pants. you can see this right behind us. this shooting took place half a block behind this south hayward

b.a.r.t. station. but it did not take place onburg property. that's one of the reasons why hayward police are investigating this armed robbery. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. our time is now 7:02. well there's record this morning about a -- well, there is a record this morning about a girl and her mother who moved away to get away from jerry steele, this man. he found out where they were living. police say steele tried to grab girl. when the mare ran out -- mother ran out of the house, he shot them both in the shot. this all happened where the mother and daughter have been living for a month now. that shooter disappear. after an all-day multi-agency

manhunt. he was sitting at a table where he shot andcy kill -- and killed himself. he was accused of assaulting another young girl. he was ordered to stay away from her. well, police in hillsborough are searching for a connection among a string of home burglaries. they are saying the burglaries all happened during the day when homes were unoccupied and then burglars got into the house by prying over rear sliding or french doors. thieves work quickly, stealing cash and jewelry. police are just reminding residents, lock all side and rear doors. a san jose teacher has been arrested, accused of molesting one of her students.

police are now looking for other possible victims. tara moriarty joins us live now from san jose where she just spoke to the accused woman's husband. good morning, tari. yes, we spoke to him by phone. he said his wife was not at home. we're here at neighborhood, now, we also spoke to police by phone this morning, they say they have some type of proof or evidence that this teacher molested a child. they say they can't make an arrest off hearsay. they have to have probable cause but what that is they are not saying at this time. police arrested colette phelps after receiving a tip. she's worked as a teacher for the past five years. she's accused of committing lewd acts with a young student. police have not released her age or gender and it's not known where the incident took place, if it was at the school

backing up as you come out of pittsburgh and antioch over to the willow pass grade. you can see it's a bad commute so far. democrats in sacramento say they will meet deadline of midnight tonight to pass a balanced budget for california. a new state law allows democrats to approve a budget with only a majority vote instead of the previous two- thirds requirement. but they will have to will give up the idea of going to the voters to ask for tax extensions. that would require two-thirds. they expect to balance the budget with spending cuts and fee hikes. a new field poll shows 52% of registered voters say say -- say they are willing to extend tempo ray -- temporary tax increases to close budget.

california, oregon and washington permission to kill the sea lions. wisconsin supreme court reversed an earlier decision and they have upheld a controversial law that takes away most of the collective bargaining rights of state employees. >> state workers are upset about the court ruling and protested. the ruling was a victory for scott walker who says the law is needed to address the state's budget shortfall. he pushed for the bill despite weeks of protests by teachers, union workers and others who called it an attack on workers rights. a new study shows more education you have the more work-related stress you are likely to feel. a new york research company found that employees with doctorate degrees are the most engaged but even though they are concern about doing their

san jose city officials just approved a budget to close a $115 million budget gap. kraig debro joins us live from city hall to explain what this means for the list department and other city employees. kraig? >> reporter: good morning, dave. we've been talking mostly about the police department and if you take the whole budget and layoffs, there's about 500 positions citywide. the police department is probably the hardest hit with about 20% of the people laid off being police officers. this at a time when the city has seen an increase in

homicides over last year. earlier this week, the city of san jose suffered through its 25th homicide of the year. that doesn't include the murder- suicide last month in san jose state. in all last year, 20 homicides were committed in the city. late last week before the cuts but just hours after people were stabbed at a downtown mcdonald's. >> our job right now is to be out there working in the community to make sure its safe and to make sure that folks know that -- that thinks perhaps maybe there's layoffs looming, this is the opportunity to establish turfs and we're not gonna get that happen. >> reporter: for the tenth straight year, the council approved a budget with a deficit. members of the union agreed to take 10% pay ruts -- pay cuts

in exchange for layoffs. another 80 positions will remain open because of retire and other positions -- retirement and other positions. the fire departments were not required to lay off this year. >> everybody here in city hall is weary of what's happening right now. they don't want to lay off officers especially at a time when there seems to be ain cease in the -- to be an increase in the violent crime rate. tonight at city hall, mayors and community leaders are going to be meeting to see about

fighting crime. back to you. a man is in grave condition after an overnight shooting in west oakland. it happened shortly after 11:00 p.m. at 65th street near herzog close to the berkeley border. investigators say the victim was shot several times and may not survive. police are still looking for suspects. san leandro police are also investigating a shooting, one that left a man seriously injured. the suspect is still on the loose. alameda county sheriff deputies searched an apartment -- an apartment complex yesterday evening. an investigation continues into the third homicide of the year there. police say a man was shot and killed on venus place last night. the body of the unidentified man was found in front a house just after 5:00. we don't know his name but neighbors say he was married and had children.

safety changes are coming to crosswalks around rohnert park following the tragic death of a 2-year-old girl. prosecutors say 18-year-old kateland dunnaway was texting while driving through a crosswalk last december. she hit and killed 2-year-old callie murray and seriously hurt callie's mother. city council approved $500,000 to install new signs and repaint crossings. dunnaway is who -- who is charged with merchandise vehicular homicide is due back no -- misdemeanor vehicular homicide is due back in court tomorrow. how is the traffic? >> it's busy. it starts here in la fayette and it -- it's kind of unusual. here we are in the middle of june. a lot of schools are out but we have a lot of slow traffic up to the tunnel. on other side, we also have slow traffic approaching the bay bridge. so it has been quite a commute. remember highway 4 we had earlier crash we showed you.

but they are gonna have to give up the idea of voting -- of going to the voters. today lawmakers will vote on a bill that balances a budget with a combination of spending cuts and fee hikes. a new need 0 poll shows the margin says 52% support tax extensions to close the budget deficit. now, that's a drop of 9 percentage points from pack in march. the poll also finds 31% of voters disapprove of the governor's job's perm formance. that's up 1% from march. today, iran's president, mahmoud ahmadinejad, there he is there, he's at a summit meeting that includes the leaders of china and russia. in his speech here, the president called for a shakeup

san jose city officials just approved a measure to help close the budget shortfall. kraig debro is live at city hall to explain what this will mean for police department and other city employees. >> reporter: well, the budget is passed and signed now, everybody got what they wanted, at least they thought what they want. there will an lot fewer people working for the city of san jose and there will be a lot fewer resources everything has gone down. the $155 million deficit by only about a third. the mayor called for ten city worker unions to take 10% pay cut and they d but there will still be a lot of layoffs. now 100 fewer police officers

kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. a man is in grave condition right now after an overnight shooting that happened in west oakland. this happened shortly after 11:00 p.m. here near 65th street. this is right near the border with berkeley. investigators say he was shot several times, may not survive. still not clear what led up to the shooting. police are -- police are still out there looking for suspects. police in san leandro, also investigating a shooting, one that left a man very seriously injure. this happened on kentwood lane and the suspect is still on the loose. alameda county sheriff deputies searched an apartment complex at 15th and east 14th -- east 14th street. an investigation continues into the third homicide of the year. police say a man was shot and killed on venus place last night. the body of the unidentified man was found in front of a home just after 5:00. we don't know his name but neighbors say he was bury -- married and had children.
