channel 2 news. the family of the missing nursing student michelle lee is asking the public to help search for her. they're going to be holding a news conference about their search efforts. they're going to search from 8:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon. experienced search and rescue personnel will be training volunteers, and those volunteers must be 18 years or older. the family plans to set up a command center each morning in heyward. >> now turning to developing few f news, we're monitoring a major disruption to all houstony underground lines a lot of people are waiting here. this is at the intersection of church. feel are waiting to get on the train and a lot of people have been doing just this. this is what we know so far. the k., the l. and the m. lines have all been closed since 11:00 a.m. those lines are expected to be restored any minute. however, the real problem here are the n. and the j. line. they need about another eight

to 10 hours before they will open. all of this was caused by an overhead wire that got damaged. what happened today before noon is a draffer actually ran into those lines and then, unaware, kept on driving. didn't know about the broken equipment. then that train kept dragging those wires down and that's why there is a major disruption to these five underground lines. houstony carries more passengers than any other transit system in the bay area. a lot of people affected here. we'll bring you the latest just as soon as we get it. a head-on crash on the golden gate bridge caused a major back-up this afternoon. all lanes were reopened. the chp says at least three vehicles were involve immediate the collision. it closed the southbound lanes, the ones heading into the city around 3:30 this afternoon. no one was seriously injured in that pile-up. the veers are still trying to determine the cause of the crash. right now we want to show you live pictures from the toll booth there. the southbound lanes are on the left. i just looked at ktvu.com, our

at the same time the number of homeowners who received notices of missed payments dropped to its lowest level since 2006. freddie mac says the average 30- year fixed rate mortgage rose slightly to 4.5%. applications for unemployment benefits went down last week. the numbers are higher than the analysts consider indicative of a healthy economy. it is down 16,000 from the week before and it is the second drop in three weeks. continuing claims also dropped slightly to 3.68 million. in athens, greece tonight, political unrest has replaced the riots. the government struggles to avoid a complete finance cialg collapse. today the prime minister faced down a revolt in the legislature. the lawmakers are angry over the new os tearity measures including the spending cuts and tax hikes. today two of the prime minister own socialist lawmakers resigned. and in the continuing debt crises in greece weighed

[ . >> reporter: the dollar and u.s. government bonds rose as the traders moved money into safer investments for the second straight day. also today the stocks money knowledged one day after its i.p.o. the stock dropped over $4. just yesterday on its first day of trading pan dora was selling for as much as $26 a share. the dow closed at 11,961. the nasdaq finished down by seven closing at 2623. a moderate earthquake rocked anchorage, alaska. it occurred 52 miles southwest of anchorage. it was followed a few minutes later by three aftershocks. at this point no reports of serious injury or property damage. an environment group says these products are not quite what they represent themselveses to be.

>> the center for environmental health today sued 26 manufacturers that make personal care products. and our consumer editor tells us the suit accuses them of selling products that violate california's organic labeling law. tom? >> reporter: that law basically says if it is organic, it has to be 70% of organic ingredients. the question on the street is what does it northeastern to them? >> it is healthier to other things available to me? >> it does not necessarily work better but have less chemicals in it. >> reporter: what did the center for environmental health find? >> we found dozens of shampoos, lotions and toothpaste labeled as organic, yet they contained few or in organic ingredients.

to a report. and the report's author says agriculture revenues from 2007 to 2009 were among the highest on record. she says the farmers took a number of short term steps to deal with the drought, including using more local ground water and shifting crop patterns. firefighters in antioch extinctished a grass fire that threatened an apartment building just two hours ago. it began around 2:30 this afternoon. the flames scorched the side of a building before the crews put out the fire no one was hurt and there was no significant property damage. with fire season officially underway, many homeowners are in their yards trying to reduce the danger. they are make sure that homeowners have cut down high grass and dry brush near their home. it really the best way to prevent the spread of wildfires. >> when you have really tall grass, it is a very dry day,

around. soon they will start coming straight out of the west and southwest that is tomorrow, and that will continue our cooling. so that will bring the fog back to the coast, too, which will be one of the main features. so mostly clear tonight. there will be that patchy fog moving up the coast. the winds are cog to shift around. forget the north, northeast, or even north-northwest. maybe even the southwestly. coastal fog and cooler tomorrow with that pattern. it is a subtle change, and it is still going to be nice. it is just not going to be 95 like it was yesterday. forecast overnight lows. we had overnight lows two nights ago that were in the low 60s. look at santa rosa. that will be chilly. there is that fog. it is all the way up to the bay, salmon creek. and then you'll see mostly clear skies around the bay proper overnight so as we roll through the bay area, and you know about microclimates, there are hundreds of them tbu. main runs -- ones are the coast and the bay and so these are the microclimates.

as we roll through time, tomorrow we will see low 60s. you get over towards the east bay hills. concord, and upper 70s. and then you find those 80s when you get out here towards antioch. so that is the basic broad brush of the microclimates. yesterday those temperatures were in the mid 90s. i'm going to be back here in about 15 minutes. i'm going to have the complete forecast with an actual temperature for your city. i'll see you back here in a little bit. thank you. for the first time nasa astronomers are watching a star be torn apart from a black hole. it is a bright burst from the dying star which was picked up on march 28. then astronomers around the world followed the death throes of the star. this last picture is what it might have looked up close, a star like our own sun, being ripped apart by a black hole nearly four billion light years from the earth.

underway in vancouver, british columbia. fans of the cay flukes hockey team crashed the city. they went on an angry rampage after their team lost in the stanley cup finals. and the rioters rooted stores and burned cars in a 10-block area of downtown vancouver. almost 150 people had to be treated at a hospital. some 100 people were arrested. an exclusively new field poll shows arnold schwarzenegger's popularity took a real plunge after he admitted fathering a child with his former housekeeper. schwarzenegger left the governor's office in january, but last month the scandal over his affair pushed him back into the public spotlight. the field poll was taken last week. it found 75% of those responding have an unfavorable opinion of schwarzenegger with only 20% holding a favorable view. in may of 2004, those numbers were just about reversed with 64% holding a favorable opinion of the then governor. that unfavorable opinion spans all voter groups, including 82%

of democrats, 72% of republicans, 73% of whites and 80% of la tampa bay r. teenas. the poll found that schwarzenegger ranks low mer the public eye than either of this two pred sees o.s, gray davis and pete wilson. chrysler is recalling more than 11,000 vehicles tonight. federal safety regulators say a missing or incorrectly installed rivet could cause a loss of steering and raise the risk of an accident. the recall applies to 11 out of 20 chrysler models. among them, the town and country, the dodge avenger, caravan, journey and "nitro" as well as the jeep come pass, liberty, patriot and wrangler. the dealers and owners are said to be officially notified next month. these homeless kittens were rescued from the ground0s f a south bay company, but how the company plans to get red of the rest of the cat population angers the rest of the viewers. and which city suspended

>> they say it is inhumane but people in the south bay are being told to go against their instincts or possibly risk getting fired. the ferrell cats are showing up, and some workers with tender hearts have been taking care of the animals. and we're live in san jose. and robert, they're scially being ordered to stop doing that. >> reporter: that's right. it was a direct order to all employees, and it is interesting because they were once one of many silicon valley companies that allowed the workers to help cats.

now the rescue groups accuse the company of disregarding the animals an the worker whose tried to help. these homeless kittens are being cared for at safe haven for cats in redwood city. they were part of a kl nee of stray and ferrell cats manageed by a program through volunteers and the workers. >> many of them would just die. they would die an awful death at the hands of other predators, as food for other predators, it of hunger. >> reporter: but in a memo obtained by ktvu, the company ordered the employees not to care for the cats anymore and starting tomorrow, the company will have a private firm removed. >> it is not humane. and they think that once the cats are trapped that they're going to be rehomed into other areas that have colonies with regular caregivers. but that is not the case. we do not do that. no agency out there does that. >> reporter: the groups are also upset because some employees claim they are being punished and even face termination for feeding the

cats. the company denies that and says the cats were getting into key storage facilities, so the company worked with the local humane society to develop a safe trap and remove process. but the humane society told me they have not worked with the company and nor cothey agree with the plan. they call the removal a temporary solution. >> there are many stray and homeless cats that will move into the area and they will once again have an overpopulation problem. >> reporter: a local non-profit will house any cats from here temporarily, but the rescue groups still believe the company will continue its plan and punish employee whose want to manage the cats so the groups plan to pickett and protest here starting next week. live in san jose, ktvu, channel 2 news. san jose's fire chief responded to a scathing grand jury report that called santa clara's medical responsibility outdated and wasteful. the report harshly criticized the fire departments throughout

there in the center of the screen. we understand it is san abandoned walgreen's that is son fire. it is just west of highway 80 on san pablo dam road. we do have news chopper 2 heading there as well. we also have a ground crew heading that way. i don't know if this is going to be impacting traffic. in the err i can't have -- err why of san pablo dam road. we'll stay on top of this developing story and hope we can bring you better pictures and the latest information just as soon sac we can get it. >> the pipeline explosion in san bruno is now the focus of a multiagency task force. news of the task force was just revealed in documents filed with the u.s. securities and exchange commission. the sec was informed because any criminal fines or penalties could impact b. g. and e.'s finances. eight people died in that explosion and several others were seriously injured and dozens of homes were also destroyed or damaged. meanwhile nwashington, d.c., representatives of the

pipeline police officering industry told a congressional panel investigating that explosion that they are open to new regulation. one bill making its way through the house of representatives calls for more computer scans to be done inside pipes. experts say that is an effective way to spot potential damage. >> only a small percentage of pipelines are required to have those inspections so one of the things congress is interested in talking is expanding those inspections to more miles of pipeline so more people are safe. >> and the house is not expected to move forward on a pipeline safety bill until the national transportation safety board comes out with a probable cause on the san bruno explosion sometime in the next few months. another top republican today demanded that president obama provide legal justification for the u.s. role in the libyan conflict. house speaker john baner said so far the president's reasoning, quote, doesn't pass the straight face test. >> the white house says there are no hostilities taking place. yet we've got drone attacks

underway. we're spending $10 million a day. and the speaker and other lawmakers say the president may be violating the war powers resolution. that law states that congress must authorize any u.s. military action that lasts for more than 60 days. the nato offensive will hit that deadline object sunday. some members of congress wanted a court order to suspend operations in lib jordin sparks but the minority leader nancy pelosi said now is not the time for an ultimatum. >> if the congress doesn't feel it is adequately communicated with, then they should intensify the communication. i don't think they should stop other support that they're giving to nato to stop the humanitarian disaster. >> the president's press secretary said he providing reasoning in a lengthy report yesterday. he also says the white house has been consulted as many as 40 times on the american role in libya. the house of representatives passed a numb budget bill today but one south

bay lawmaker warns it could compromise the nation's food safety. they voted to cut the budget for the next fiscal year. the republicans say the tough cuts were needed to control runaway federal spending. the san jose congresswoman says the cuts go too deep and that the fda may not be able to hire enough inspector -- inspectors to ensure food safety on our farms. >> you're count on the regulatory agencies to do their job. and if we don't have the inspectors, the food won't be as safe. and god help us. i hope nothing happens, but it could and it has in the past. and the budget bill now heads to the senate. the city of napa suspended the use of red light cameras after a judge's ruling last month that they are illegal. you may have first saw this story last month. napa has the cameras at four intersections. the judge said that the city's contracts with the company that operates those cameras violates state law because it has provision that ties payment to the number of citations issued.

the city council is expected to discuss next week to try to respond to the judge's ruling. a new kind of left turn arrow is in use in one bay area city and others around the country. it blinks and it is yellow. when oncoming cars have a green light, drivers with the beelining yellow light can legally make a left turn if there is a gap in the traffic. the south bay city is using this new yellow left arrow and so are minneapolis and detroit and san antonio. california lawmakers are considering a change for traditional yellow lights in traffic signals. the cities would be allowed to reduce yellow light times bay fax of a second. shorter yellow lights could result in more tickets for running red lights at intersections with photo enforcement that would mean more revenue for the city. and why you shouldn't put off having weight loss surgery. doctors find that certain patients are having better outcomes than others. this will sure put a stop to your trip on san francisco

service. the tree fell on the tracks and then more branches fell on the street. the crews cleared the debris just a few minutes later. >> state agents took away the liquor license from a small liquor and grocery store in san francisco because it was selling alcohol to minors. authorities with the california alcoholic beverage control posted notices on bob's liquor and grocery store on harrison street that the store's liquor license had been revoked. they carried out the disciplinary action after a three-year process. >> the store owner pursued a hearing, and then challenged our findings and took it through the appeal process to the very end. >> state orals say they cited the store three times in three years for selling alcohol to minors that special the criterion for caking away a store's liquor license. patients with less weight to lose may have more to gain from bariatric weight loss surgery. researchers looked at patients with a body mass index of 35

significantly from yesterday, which was the warmest day of the week. today down to 77. 84 in concord. the forecast highs tomorrow another three or four degrees. the fog has been in monterey bay pl's of the day. it is breaking off now in the west side of town. that is the trend. that's why we're calling for a cooling trend. three to six degrees cooler for your forecast high tomorrow. the fog model looks like this. here we go into don't. you see a little wit of patchy fog along the coast. it is not an amazing, aggressive field of fog. it is just patchy at best so it is going to burn off quickly. and tomorrow morning, there it is. right? and along the coast that is san francisco that is the avenues. and that is south of market.

and then by tomorrow afternoon it is right back to the coast. and they had a good run up at fort bragg. if you have within up there at all, beautiful weather. the fog has been scoured away. it should return there in the next day. 80. and we have some cities here for you. 81 in fairfield. and a nice day. temperatures not where they should be. it may be a tad cool in some places, but certainly cooler than yesterday. the temperatures trend down tomorrow. and the five-day forecast, what you're going to notice is the temperatures continue to drop a little bit. we're going to have a pretty darn nice weekend as we go into obviously saturday and sunday. but just cooler. >> and the good news. i nexted this last night. with all of the snow in the mountains, there is concerns for the rapid snow melt and the flooding in the yosemite. and that will slow the snow melt. and so this is actually helpful to many folks in the his and the foothill where is they're having heavy run off.

an army of volunteers wrapped up their work for the day and they put in a full day of sweat equity today to give a much needed facelift the a local high school. when the students at recommendry high return to class in the fall, they may not recognize their school. today 250 volunteers from the cliff bar company rolled up their sleighs and helped refurbish the campus.

they planned trees and flowers and repainted buildings in the school's blue and gold colors. >> they're doing extreme makeovers of some of the counseling rooms and the after school program rooms. they're gardening. they're power washing. >> the prong is a joint effort between cliff bar, the emery education foundation and the nonprofit e rebuilding together. along with their employees' time, cliff bar donated tens of thousands of collars worth of paint, equipment, rentals and garden supplies. the organizers say those donations are especially appreciated in the emeryville schools where 80% of the students live in poverty. there is much more news just ahead. ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 is next. now he is here at the hospital in critical condition. more news is coming up on ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00.
