welcome to a brand new day and it's friday, june 17th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. let's start with steve paulson for the friday forecast. >> pamela and dave good morning. happy friday. we have higher clouds. mostly sunny but cooler and breezy. there is a lot of fog moving up the coast. so 50s and 60s there. 60s and 70s around the bay. very low 80s. no doubt about it sea breeze today. temperatures sliding down away from the coast. here is sal. traffic looks pretty good at the coliseum if you are driving on interstate 880. here's a quick look at the coliseum. also a quick look at the east shore freeway getting down to the mccarthur maze. all looks good. a complete traffic update just minutes ahead. sal, thank you. there is a special plea for help this morning from the family of missing nursing student michelle le. kraig debro is joining us live. he's in hayward where a search party is about to gatt never a couple hours. >> reporter: that is right.

at 8:00 this morning michelle le's family and friends will meet here on cypress street. it's a mile from the hayward police station. michelle's family and friends fanned out promoting the search effort to get maximum turnout. today saturday and sunday volunteers will look for the missing nursing student. the area of searching is not going to be released. the police department and the family held a news conference. >> you know if it was your daughter and your sister, your cousin, you know your friend you wouldn't give up hope until she was found. >> reporter: le was last seen on may 27th at kaiser hospital. she is a nursing student and was at the hospital to take a

class. last week police concluded that le is dead. they based that conclusion on evidence that cannot be shared with the public. >> sit frustrate something it is. it's an intense investigation. we have not lowered our intensity and vigor. we will continue with that until we bring michelle home. >> reporter: based on what police said last week when they said bring michelle home it means something very different from what the family means. coming up we will have more details on what you need to do if you want to get involved in the search. reporting live kraig debro. your time now 6:03. this morning under ground muni service is up and running again all across san francisco. just in the past 30 minutes muni restored light rail service along the very busy market street corridor on the n and j lines. service had been cut off since yesterday morning. this is after a train knocked down some overhead lines.

at first all five light rail lines were effected by this. muni managed to get three of the lines back in service at 5:30 yesterday afternoon. service on the n and j lines remained up in the air overnight as those crews kept working on trying to make the rose pairs. shuttle buses were standing by just a short while ago this morning just in case service could not be restored in time for this mornings commute. there has been a string of suspicious fires in antioch. the latest one was started last night. ktvu claudine wong congress is in antioch this morning with where the investigation stands now. claudine. >> reporter: residence are concerned, firefighters are frustrated these fires keep happening. you can smell these fires. the most recent one 12 hours ago. there are several burn areas. five fires within the last two weeks. this is a grassy area. all of these fires are pretty

close to homes. one of these over here pretty close to an electrical tower that sits along the hillside. now this is an issue that keeps coming up. we talked to a resident that says it keeps coming up every single summer. if you look at how close it came, it came within feet of the fences to these homes over here. this happened around 7:30 last night. we want to show you video of the scene as the fire was under way. these have not been big fires. firefighters say with budget cuts resources are thin. and when they have to come out here over and over again it's frats straiting. >> this is the fifth fire we've had in the last last few weeks. >> reporter: you are looking at video from a fire last week. one of the homeowners involved in that fire went out with his hose to try to put water on his backyard because he was so

concerned it might come up to his home. we have talked to a resident out here this morning that says this makes him very nervous because of all the fuel that is out here and the potential that the fire could spread to something far worse on a hot dry day when it's windy. we take a live look again here's the damage. if up on the hill you -- up on the hill you can see lots more grass. residents say it happens every summer. firefighters want to get the ones that are running this. live in antioch claudine wong. a man accused of killing a san jose woman and dumping her body in a sunnyvale neighborhood has confessed. 47-year-old feliciano santiago confessed during a police interview. 46-year-old maria orozco's body was found in a body bag.

records indicate she had exchanged phone calls with her alleged attacker but their relationship is still not clear. santiago is due in court june 27th. we are continuing to follow developing news out of virginia. authorities say one person has been taken into custody in connection with an investigation into a suspicious vehicle found near the pentagon. stay with us here. washington d.c. reporter alison burns is working on the story. we will check in with her we will go live to washington, d.c. in a few minutes to find out what she has learned. u.s. military leaders promised the new leader of al qaeda will face the same fate as the old one. a statement on a jihaddist website names bin laden's replacement al-zawahiri. >> as we did both seek to

capture and kill and succeed in killing bin laden, we certainly do, will do the same thing with al-zawahiri. >> bin laden has been the leader since its inception. in that particular concept he has particular charisma that al- zawahiri does not have. >> they believe his appointment could prompt al qaeda to launch a new series in attacks. california senator barbara boxer will give a major speech about america's role in afghanistan. she will be speaking before the world affairs council of northern california. her speech comes at a very critical time. the obama administration will announce plans to redeploy combat troops in afghanistan next month. california's budget deadline is fast approaching for democrats, republicans, and governor jerry brown.

>> for a decade the can has been kicked down the road and death has piled up. california is facing a very tough fiscal crisis. >> the governor has reshouted -- has shocked both lines. the governor wants a special election to allow voters to approve tax increases and tax extensions. the governor has to provide specific proposals far budget he will sign. >> he seems to want a confrontation. that is okay if you know what your detired plan is but you also have to know what your back up plan here is. >> the vetoed budget included education cuts and a vehicle registration fee hike. the current budget runs out at the end of the month. california is facing a $9.6

billion deficit. a head on collision on the golden gate bridge is putting new attention open the need for a median barrier. the crash yesterday involved three cars. it didn't cause major injuries. they will put in a movable barrier that will eliminate head on collisions but that won't happen in two years. sal told me there is a new crash on the bay bridge. >> it's rather unfortunate we have been doing so well up until now. one of our cameras spotted it westbound on the incline. one of our camera people spotted it. it's an injury crash westbound bay bridge. if you look closely you can see one of the cars is already being towed away. some of the vehicles are being moved off to the right hand side which is essentially they are getting them out of the lane. westbound traffic we may be saved a little bit but those five lanes any time there is any sort of a backup they switch the metering lights on

extra slow. you can also see the police cars are trying to sort through that traffic to get through this. obviously we will keep watching it. we may be lucky may not be as bad. this is another view our control room just put up to view from our emeryville camera. let's move along and take a look at the commute on interstate 880. traffic looks good if you are driving on the nimitz freeway. and again in the south bay northbound 280 and 85 looking good. 85 a little slow approaching highway 17. let's go to steve. thank you. if you stepped outside yet maybe you took the dog for a walk you might notice a chill in the air. focus on the peninsula. 48 degrees. menlo park 49. los altos not inside. palo alto at 50. that is cool for june as the cool pa turn settles in there is a lot of upper 40s.

that fog is racing up the coast. it will be a cool foggy morning there. system responsible is another area of low pressure which is diving into the pacific northwest. we are on the southern edge of it. i say sunny there will be higher clouds zipping down occasionally. very windy at times out of the west, southwest. sea breeze is in place. east, southeast for san jose. west, northwest at sfo but upper 40s look at that say know ma county airport is the 48 degrees. if it wasn't for the breeze napa airport would be cooler. in town it is closer. and 55 fair feel they have a howling sea breeze as well. fremont starting off as a brisk 49. the high today of 72. the ridge of hawaii pressure is topple -- the ridge of high

pressure is toppling down. cooler inland can't get much cooler by the coast. breezy to windy. coastal fog. 50s and 60s by the coast. 60s and 70s by the bay or low 80s unless you are well away from marin influence. low to mid 80s out toward pittsburgh and brantwood. a lot of 60s and 70s. 74 sunnyvale to 76 san jose. 75 gilroy. 50s and 60s on the coast. 66 we will go 70 san mateo. wood side 76. and mountain view morning fog cooler into saturday. then a rebound of a slight one on sunday. the warmer weather especially inland monday and tuesday. scary moments for a florida sheriffs deputy while trying to make a traffic stop. look at that. how the motorcyclist that dragged that officer was

eventually tracked down because of his job. also we have new details about the arrest of the former head of the imf. why dominic strauss kahn claimed he was above the law.

developing news in our nation's capitol. a suspicious car found near the pentagon. ktvu alison burns joins us now from our washington, d.c. newsroom with information about potential suspects. allison.

>> reporter: at least one person is in custody. roads around the pentagon are closed and there are concerns about the possibility of other bombs being planted in various locations in northern virginia. now in just the last 40 minutes we heard from the u.s. parks police. an officer describes a person was brought into custody overnight because he was alone at arlington cemetery after dark. >> somebody that was suspicious by being in the arlington cemetery overnight. we have one person in custody we are talking to about that. and we have a vehicle. >> reporter: that vehicle has been under investigation for a few hours. these are some of the police cars around the pentagon. there are mixed reports about what is inside the car. some reports say it was amoan yum nitrate. others say it looked like a bomb. no official word yet. they used a water cannon ons vehicle. police were investigating

whether other devices were planted at the memorial and arlington cemetery. those area were closed. the e yogi ma memorial has just reopened. we will stay on top of this for you. a so-called hit list. the fbi says it found the list on the jihad web list. it includes 40 people. including photos of 26 of the targets. specific names have not been revealed. reports say it includes a member of congress, pentagon officials, and a conservist. it's from a florida police dash cam. it shows a sheriff deputy being

dragged behind a motorcycle. >> i just got drug by a motorcycle. >> this video was just now released. deputy mike muso was trying to pull over this biker back in march. that biker was going 112 miles an hour on a freeway. as the man took off he the sheriffs deputy grabbed him below his shoulder but eventually lost his grip after being dragged. the deputy ran back to his patrol car to try to chase him that cyclist was found and arrested after one officer saw a picture of him and recognized him as his barber. the deputy wasn't badly hurt. he was back to work a couple of days later. the former head of the international monetary fund accused of sexually assaulting a hotel maid complained that his handcuffs were too tight after being arrested. that is one of the details in the newly released court documents. this is video of strauss kahn pleading not guilty to say salt and rape charges.

the new documents also reveal that he claims he has diplomatic immunity. kahn is now under house arrest until his next court hearing in july. 6:19. sacramento man facing a dozen charges. he's part of a scam where he claimed to be affiliated with pg&e a in order to secure a construction job he told homeowner he was the head of professional gas and electric and was tied to pg&e. he is charged with taking money and not doing the work he promised at homes in san mateo county. more smart meters are coming to santa cruz county. pg&e is giving a heads up to scotts valley, watson vail, and so kill. santa cruz county passed smart meter moratoriums. santa cruz is the last area to

have wide-spread installation of the smart meters. 6:20 is the time. back to sal for a look at the friday morning commute. >> we do have a problem on the bay bridge that is clearing. it was a crash that is now out of the lanes. however, you can see that people are slowing down. it was also reported as a hit and run in this area. it's possible that one of the vehicles involved took off. police are sorting it out there. but you can see the people are slowing down and there is going to be a backup now at the bay bridge toll plaza. the good news is that the lanes are open on the bridge. it will be a little bit of a backup. northbound 101 san francisco that traffic looks good approaching the 80 split. this mornings drive in the south bay continues to look pretty good. along northbound 280 we had an earlier accident southbound 17 just after the 880 connector. not causing any slow downs. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir.

this morning is very cool. a lot of upper 40s including minute low park. we have a lot of fog. let's take a look at marin county. marine county of public works down to -- marin county of public works down to 44 degrees. mill valley four readings of 49 degrees. novato is 50. and sausalito a cool 50 degrees. there is santa rosa at 48 degrees. a lot of 50s here. there that is a big drop from a couple days ago we had upper 50s and low 60s. ridge of high pressure will be here sunday. until then it will be cool and breezy. there is a decent little sea breeze making it out to the delta. fog keeps its cool on friday.

all right. chrysler is recalling more than 11,000 vehicles this morning. car maker says some of the 2011 models may have a bad rivet that may cause the steering wheel to collapse in a collision. the models are listed on your screen. they include the chrysler 200 and town and country models. as well as the dodge caravan, caliber, avenger, journey and nitro. so far though no reports of any crashes or injuries because of that problem. all right time now 6:23. they are accused of stealing a car with a one-month-old baby inside. the names of the suspects and this surveillance video that may help catch them. workers at a florida rental business got a frightening surprise. it's all caught on tape. good morning, westbound bay bridge lanes are open now. there is a crash they are clearing from the lanes that is causing a backup.

bay bridge traffic westbound this morning is recovering from an earlier crash. traffic is still slowing down just past the metering lights. look at this.

a frightening robbery at a florida car rental shop caught on tape. surveillance video showing three men busting in there. it forced one employee to the ground. the man then stole wallets from employees and money out of the cash register and pointing guns the whole time. later on they stole a blue ford focus. police later found that car about a mile away but the suspects they were long gone. morgan hill police have the names of two people suspected in prompting an amber alert last month. surveillance video shows maribel are accused of stealing a car with a one-month-old baby in the backseat. an arrest warrant has been issued for 33-year-old mejia. the pair may be driving a 1988 blue toyota camry with possibly duct tape on the rear window. the stolen car with the baby safely inside was dumped at a

park near city lee that. what the lawyers for the man suspected of beating up the giants fan is doing to try to clear their clients name. muni restored across san francisco. we're taking you live to the city. the backup plan the transit agency had in place just in case things didn't work out. there is the opening bell live in new york. we will tell you why rock of ages is there when we come back.

the hayward police department. after last weeks conclusion about michelle le from police, the family is reaching out to loved ones for help. >> we have new family members for you. my little brother alex, my cousin vincent and they are just trickling in. we will have a lot more this weekend. >> reporter: a growing number of family and friends will take part in this search. 26-year-old michelle le was last seen by people who know her on may 27th at kaiser hospital in hayward. last week police said le is dead and they have evidence. the nursing student family doesn't believe that and has organized a three day eight hour search. only those who are 18 have a valid id and agreed to wear the appropriate clothing. le's family is organizing the search to find them. also they cannot help the police with that part of the investigation. >> because of logistic we can't

have them directly with us which is frustrating for them. they are able to reach out to employ people to assist them. >> reporter: although police believe michelle is dead, they don't have any suspects in their death. they have a lot of people of interest. hayward police also said they received new surveillance video from where the car of michelle le was parked. police are not saying what is on the tape. they have sent it to the fbi for further investigation. reporting live in hayward kraig debro. muni commuters trying to get in and out of the market street area in san francisco shouldn't face any delays this morning. within the last hour muni restored under ground light rail service on its n and j lines. service has been up in the air as we have been reporting crews continue repair work. it started yesterday after a train brought down overhead wires. shuttle buses were in place this morning just in case service couldn't be restored but we have been out there all

morning long checking in on the situation be time now 6:33 we are getting new details about bryan stow case. giovanni ramirez is charged with beating stow up. ramirez's lawyers went door to door looking for surveillance video from the day of that beating. they are hoping it will show ramirez had hair that day and not the shaved head. the man who confessed to killing oakland journalist chauncey bailey and another man is apologizing to their families. in a jailhouse interview broussard says he doesn't expect forgiveness but wants the families to know he's sorry. he says at the time of the shootings he didn't think of the victims as people. broussard who will be sentenced to 25 years in prison testified

that yusuf bey iv ordered the hit. an oakland man will be arraigned today. tompkins is being charged in the shooting near sweet jimmy's bar back in april. two men were killed then. four others were hurt. police say several witnesses identified tompkins as the shooter. police also say they recovered the rifle used in that attack. the two men that were killed in that shooting may not have been the intended targets. >> a string of suspicious fires is under investigation. ktvu claudine wong is there with the latest fire which is the fifth in two weeks. >> reporter: pac -- pam, i just spoke to the couple that live in that home there. you can take a look at the burn pattern of this fire it got within a couple of feet from the fence line of their home. what is more concerning is it's part of a larger pattern.

if you take a look around this park area you can see a burn area up there that goes right up to the fence line of those home there is. you can see another burn area further down the way here that goes right up to that electrical tower. and yet another burn area that goes within a few feet of the homes. now the most recent fire happened at 7:30 last night. we do have video from the scene. to be honest the fire fights are very short. firefighters say they are very small fires and put them out quickly. the potential this could get worse that is there. residence we talked toothiest morning are concerned about what happened. we talked to one resident this morning that saw the smoke. >> on the way back from work we are coming out of the freeway and notice there was a lot of fog toward our area where we live. and we try to rush up. apparently it was a little

farther from where we saw it. >> reporter: nervous about your house. >> totally. i was worried about my kids. we were calling and they never answered the phone. they were in the back playing. >> reporter: they weren't worried but you were. it's all grass behind your house. >> yes it's very dry right now. it's risky the fires can come up really easy. >> reporter: lots of dry grass. you are looking at video from the area that was burned last week when the third of the five fires swept through the area. we know in that situation the residence along that fire line were concerned. they were out with their own hoses dropping water on hot spots. firefighters frustrated that they don't have any good leads. we talked to the residence out here they assume it is kids.

someone starting trouble. in the past the one we talked to said they have had a fire every now and again. it's very dry out here. but five fires in two weeks that is certainly taking it to another level. live here in antioch. time is 6:37. reaction among new yorkers is mixed after the resignation of anthony weiner. he set down yesterday saying he had become a distraction after confessing to sending lude photos of himself to several women. he had been resisting the calls to leave office. the majority of residence in his congressional district wanted him to stay. >> i think it was the next one. whatever he does in his private life really is none of our business. >> i'm happy to be re-- i'm happy he's resigning. >> the governor will call a special election for primary

traffic moving along nicely on the san mateo bridge if you want to use that as an alternative. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. we do have sunshine inland. temperatures today will be coming down inland. there is too much of a sea breeze. even though it will be sunny. i talked about some of the lows on the pips la on the upper 40s. menlo park, woodside, and also in marin county. that is really cool for this time of year. wood acre 46. i think that is four readings for mill valley. nevada is close and sausalito at 50 cool degrees. and maybe where you are as well the fog continues to ramp up. it stops though hit and miss on the marin coast. everything is coming down from the north and another area of low pressure. coastal fog sunny and cooler. windy at times. 60s and 70s unless you are far

enough inland. a westerly breeze right through the delta. the golden gate right out to the delta. east, southeast. if it wasn't for the prize napa airport -- if it wasn't for the breeze napa airport would be cooler. higher clouds stream down from the northwest. the high is building in. we probably won't get the effects of it until sunday. look for a cool, breezy pattern. it's sunny. breezy to windy at times. coastal fog. mainly south of the golden gate. there is 1078 on the marin -- there is some on the marin coast. for many today it will be in the 70s or very low 80s. danville 82. hayward 70. livermore only 80 degrees. brentwood 84. morgan hill 78. saratoga 77. 70s on the peninsula but low to mid at best. 50s and 60s closer to pacifica.

fog will be with us friday and saturday. warmer on sunday. all right it is 6:41. and a program kicking off in san jose that could result in bay area homeowners getting a cheaper mortgage payment. also new details we are just finding out about suspected serial killer joseph naso. how his wife played a role in his arrest. if you are driving on highway 4 it's getting slow here in concord. it's also slow in antioch.

one of our viewers shot this video after this fire broke out last night. luckily no one was hurt. firefighters in arizona have their hands busy. the wallow fire is 33% contained. that is the biggest in state history. yesterday gusts sparked a fire near the town of eager. the people there could be told to evacuate again. in south eastern arizona crews are also on a fire that is 65% contained and burned nearly 200,000 acres. to the south the monument fire has burned 40 homes now. that fire jumped highway 92 yesterday. roughly 1700 people have been evacuated. that fire has been burned about 11,000 acres since it began on sunday. containment is just about 17%. time now 6:46. we have new information about what lead to police to arrest

suspected serial killer joseph naso. he's charged with killing four women dating back to 1977. court documents show dna connects naso to two of the women. investigators say they discovered the dna of naso's former wife on the panty hose found around the neck of one of the murder victims in 1977. they also found more dna in fingernail clippings of another victim that was killed in 1978. philly and nancy garrido have begun serving their prison sentence. prison officials say phillip garrido will probably be in protective custody away from the general population. that is the same unit that was once home to cult murder charlesmanson. 6:47 is the time. let's check back in with sal. how is traffic and the bay bridge? >> we will check that out right

now. first of all let's take a a look at the east shore freeway. it looks pretty good heading out to the mccarthur maze and the metering lights. it will be slow at the toll plaza. i want to show you quickly the bay bridge. there is the crash on the right hand side. that was in the lanes for awhile. at the toll plaza there is a rather large delay. let's go out to the livermore valley. westbound 580 coming in. pretty slow. it gets better by the time you reach dublin. hayward union city fremont traffic looks good. highway 92 and 84 looking good over to the peninsula. at 6:48 let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. a very happy friday everybody. a little cooler as we go into the early part of the weekend. early next week for those of that you work outside does look warm to hot. the next couple of days including today much cooler as we get that sea breeze. coastal fog now most of it seems to be from marin head
