>> good afternoon. topping our news, a lot of activity is underway right now in the search for a missing nursing student, michelle le. kraig debro has been following today's developments all morning and joins us live to explain where people have been searching and whether anything has been found. >> reporter: tori, following the developments and the searchers on state road yoirn 84 in fremont. that is where dozens of volunteers are looking for michelle, even it means spending eight hours a day for the next three days under a blazing sun. they were only animal bones but they caught the attention of people eager to find michelle le. dozens of people answered the family call for help and showed up this morning at a vietnamese temple. >> none of us wants to

compromise the investigation. >> that is exactly what the authorities were worried about, that was until the police learned the class kid's foundation would be involved. he knows the pain of a missing murdered child but hasn't gotten used to the heartache. >> i don't go in search. i don't want to stumble upon something that is going to break my heart. >> i don't want to think about what will happen. i want to assume the best and we will find her alive. >> she was last seen on may 27th. recorded in a parking garage at kizer hospital in hayward, taking a class for her nursing degree. last week though police said they had proof she was dead and were investigating a homicide. this angered the family who wasn't ready to give up. today the family says it doesn't agree with the police decision but understands their position. >> they say they believe it is a homicide and they say hey, just deal with it. >> she is young, she is beautiful. you know i can't imagine the pain the family is going to

through through so we are just trying to help out. >> one of the necessities for searching is a valid id, but sometimes the person responsible for the disappears of another person will show up, that is another reason they asked for id. this is the first day of volunteer searches, there are two more days saturday and sunday. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> someone shot and wounded a painting truck driver for san francisco's parking and traffic department this morning. the driver was working in the bay view district near qint street when he made a u-turn and upset your driver. that person began cursing and when that worker drove away that driver fired shots at him,

hitting him. the worker was treated and released, police are looking f the other driver. oakland police have arrested several suspects connected to a series of armed robberies and carjackings. two suspects surrendered after a standoff this morning. investigators tracked the suspects from the scene of an armed robbery last night on 88th avenue near international boulevard. they say the crimes stretch back months. >> a multitude of incidents that we believe they are responsible for multiple street robberies as well as carjackings in the area, all of which involved firearms and gun play. >> investigators say the standoff quickly turned into a barricaded situation early this morning and a total of three suspects are in custody. a one-year-old boy was also inside the same apartment and was safely brought outside. they are looking for any other possible suspects. the man who confessed to killing chauncey bailey and

another man is apologizing to their families. in a jail house interview he said he does not expect forgiveness but he wants the families to know he is sorry. he says at the time of the shootings he did not think of the victims as people. he will be sentenced to 25 years in prison. last week another man was convicted for ordering the killing and another man was the accomplice. they are now back to square one when it comes to a new budget and have 13 days to meet a deadline. as we first reported yesterday the governor angered his own party by vetoing a democratic sponsored plan. brown wants lawmakers to authorize a special election to allow voters to approve tax increases and tax extensions set to expire. >> i don't want to see more billions in borrowing, legal maneuverings that are questionable and a budget that

will not stand the test of time. >> republicans want to cap spending and reform public employee pensions. california faces a 9.6 billion dollar deficit. california's unemployment rate dropped for a 5th year -- 5th month rather in a row. the may figure came in at 11.7%, down from 11.9% in april. the first time the california unemployment rate had been below 12 in two years. however, a survey of employers indicates the state also lost 29,000 jobs in may. it is possible to have a reduction in unemployment even with job losses, because the figures don't include those who are so discouraged they have stopped looking for work. thousands of homeowners are getting much needed help today in the south bay. allie rasmus joins us to explain who is offering the help and who is receiving it. >> reporter: tori this is day one of a 6 day opportunity for homeowners to meet with

representatives from the banks to avoid foreclosure at the san jose convention center. you can see how big it is. organizers are expecting tens of thousands of homeowners to show up. in fact a thousand people showed up this morning. >> welcome. [ cheers ] >> reporter: the doors opens at 8:00 but people lined up as early as 4:00. the events organized by the association and the founder and ceo was at the door. >> people want to stay 39 homes. they are not asking for anything free. i just don't understand why the banks don't want to work with them. >> reporter: counselors are here. so are representatives from 12 major banks and financial institutions. >> we have legally binding agreements with the major lenders and investors to do this affordable solutions. >> reporter: he says 50% of the people who walk in today will walk out with a solution but he

rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> arson investigators are asking for the public's help today to track down whoever is behind a string of fires in an antioch park. the park is located between palomar and yorkshire drive. fire investigators told us today they believe kids may be responsible for the fires and it could be connected to a rash of recent graffiti and vandalism, residents say they are concerned and just want the fires to stop. >> they are out fast. they are aware of the situation at this point. >> what do you think it is? >> probably kids, we normally get one every two or three years. >> five in two weeks. >> right, it is a lot. >> fire investigators are canvassing the neighborhood, letting people know about a tip line, 866-50-arson. ahead how a toddler got his head stuck between two concrete

san francisco and muni crews managed to finish repairs on the lines in time for the morning commute. power was dis disrupted when a piece of equipment broke and pulls wires down with it. they got one line up yesterday but it until this morning to get service fully restored on all lines. some people are criticizing a deal that will pay the outgoing chief a severance. his last day is june 30th. they are looking at a shortfall and some question whether the

money could be put to better use. officials say it is just the cost of doing business. a fellow new york congressman says u.s. representative anthony wiener was very remorseful. he said he had become a distraction after he admitted to sending lewd photos to several women. the wall street journal reports new york's governor could call a special election for either primary day on september 13th or election day on november 8th. today we are learning more about a heckler who interrupted his speech. that heckler turns out is benjie bronc, a writer for howard stern, during yesterday's announcement she shouted out questions about his body, wiener continued his comments and appeared unfazed. authorities are holding a u.s. marine after he was found in the arlington national

cemetery and his car was parked near the pentagon. investigators say the red nissan belongs to a naturalized u.s. citizen from ethiopia, the bomb squad checked out the car but did not find explosives. >> arlington cemetery is closed after dark. this is why the person was being investigated. this person was taken into custody and in the course of interviewing this person the united states park police thought it was appropriate to look for a vehicle that this person may have been operating. the investigate was located by the police department. this vehicle was located near the pentagon. >> authorities also searched his home in fairfax county, virginia, and closed several roads and the pentagon, making the usually bad commute even worse this morning. osama bin laden is no longer facing criminal charges. six weeks after navy seals killed osama bin laden during a raid on his home in pakistan a

federal judge granted a prosecution request to dismiss all criminal charges against him. federal authorities indicted osama bin laden in 1998 on charges related to terrorism attacks on two u.s. embassies in africa. the british government has told ups it will not be allowed to move air cargo through some facilities in the united kingdom because of security concerns. the government refused to say which facilities are effected but it said the move came after security tests. last year authorities discovered a bomb disguised as a toner cartridge in a ups shipment. it had been shipped from yemen. ups said it is working to clear up the security problems and things should be back to normal soon. lawyers for the man suspected in the beating of bryan stowe are still searching for evidence to clear their client's name. prosecutors say he attacked him. now a tv station reports his

now. disappointing news is hurting the nasdaq. that rim stock is actually down 20% right now. the dow as you can see up 29, but just dropped below 12,000. the nasdaq down 10, the s&p is up 2. the city of fremont will take a financial hit now that the former plant will be closed. it was sold to tessla motors. a new property assessment reduce the value of the property 600,000 dollars loss in property tax to the city. the city council approved a new operating budget that compensates for the loss of that revenue. it was a big surprise for a man on a fishing trip out of monterrey bay. he was returning from salmon fishing yesterday when he spotted several orca whales inside the harbor, he catched

three on video and joked about mem coming after his salmon. he said he often scuba dives and was surprised to see them that close. pet food express kicks off a fundraiser to help police buy a new police dog. the department does not have money to buy 1 so pet food express is donating proceeds from a pet wash. organizers hope to raise $10,000 this weekend, which is half the average cost of a new working canine. it looks like bella the swan is now the unwelcome aunt at san francisco palace of fine arts. bella returned on sunday after a month and a half in rehab for a foot injury but while she was gone brother blue boy and his
