refused to pull up his pants. today, marvin said he, quote, wanted to apologize to all of the passengers on board the flight. he said that he never intended to interrupt the flight and force all of the passengers off the plane and he said that he was very sorry for what happened. he was in the bay area to attend the funeral of a close friend who was killed two weeks ago. today marks the beginning of a three-day search for a nursing student missing for three weeks now. nearly 70 volunteers combed the hills around niles canyon going to. patty lee joins us to explain why they returned to that area. patty? >> reporter: today's search is ending about right now. the area covered was vast. but the search was not. they were looking for something like v neck sweaters, stethoscope. these volunteers look for things along the road. >> thanks this are obvious,

michele's phone records point to it as a possible crime scene. >> we searched with volunteers and they tell me that they didn't find anything of note today. but they will return tomorrow morning. fairfield police are looking for a man they say set off a pipe bomb under a car parked in an apartment complex last month. they issued an arrest warrant for 29-year-old daniel garcia. investigators found and defused another pipe bomb while serving another search warrant at a home. officers described daniel garcia as 5'10", weighs, 250- pound and blue eyes. a convicted sex offender is about to be set free with no conditions. there was no evidence that the relationship that he had with another man in his group was

sexual. prosecutors chose not to file a petition to keep him in custody because psychologists say that verse is no longer a sexual violent predator. he is free to live wherever he wants. a man accused of using his shoe with a hidden camera to take pictures of women was arrested last month at the fairfax farmer's market after a man told police that a man was using a camera to take pictures up women's skirts. police found a camera in one of springer's sandals firefighters in the north bay are on the scene of a stubborn fire in a railroad tunnel. the tunnel is low catted between geyser road and highway 128. it started burning in the unused tunnel on friday. firefighters are worried about the tunnel collapsing. they plan to let the fire burn itself out. >> firefighters in another part of the north bay made quick work of a grass fire.

not clear where the budget stands now. >> now it seems like we don't know if we are back to square 1. >> reporter: the controller is expected to decide the pay issue some time next week. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. mixed numbers came out monday on jobs here in california. the state reported that the may unemployment rate was at 11.1%, down from 11.9% in april, first time that california's unemployment rate had been below 12%. the state also lost 29,000 jobs in may. now, it is possible to have a reduction in employment even with job losses because the jobless figures don't include those who are so discouraged they have actually stopped looking for work. after days of political chaos and riots, the prime minister in greece changed his

cabinet. mr. papannadreu replaced his finance minister with a political rival in an effort to build aconsensus. the european union and the imf threatened to cut off funds if a solution is not found. germany softened it stance on greece and that helped investors be reassured that they will not default on their loan. the nasdaq fell 7 points a u.s. senator comes to san francisco to call for tens of thousands of troops to come home by december 31st. that story is ahead. fog has returned to the coast. temperatures were down today. how will that fog impact your saturday and sunday? i'll have that detail.

bring thousands of u.s. troops from afghanistan home by the en of the year. senator barbara boxer is one of many senators mac that go push to the president. we are live in san francisco where the senator laid out her case today. david? >> reporter: barbara boxer and 26 other u.s. senators sent this letter to president obama. they said that the nation's goals in afghanistan have been met. she wants tens of thousands of troops station there had to return home by december 31st. >> this is the longest war in history. it's time to bring it to an end. >> today, senator boxer said that the war has killed more than 1600 u.s. troops and wounded thousands of others. intelligence reports estimate as few as 50,000 other al-qaeda members remain in afghanistan and it's time for the president to bring home 30,000 of the 100,000 troops there by year's

park officials in yosemite are still monitoring the merced river as it nears flood stage. as you look in the middle, you can see how that high water from the merced river is covering the boardwalk. it is two feet away from float stage. things that you see here are really soggy. while there is plenty of water, things are not flooded one of the hiking trails has been reopened. the half dome trail was closed because of snow. rangers are installing cables and wooden planks to let people climb the last 400 feet without using mountain earring gearing. reservations are required. in addition here, the park plans to reopen the tyler pass road this weekend. on got weather now because the weekend is just about here. this has to be one of the best weeks with we've had in i don't remember how long. >> one of the warmest, no rain this week. last week, late in the week, we

had clouds, some sprinkles. this week, sunny, warm. yesterday, not too bad. today was a little bit cooler. the reason for the cooling would be this fog that has now made its appearance across the golden gate brim. here is the thing. fog is in the forecast again as we go into the bay area weekend. especially out towards pacifica and dali daily city. it gets breezy. fog ace regular feature this time. and it's going to make a big push inland and that fog will be slow to burn off tomorrow and cooler. sunday will be warmer extended forecast for that warmup coming towards early next week. 49 degrees in napa tonight. that's cool. 52 in vallejo. the fog is going to have more of an impact tomorrow morning than we have seen in a while in terms of coverage.

look for the cause of the massive wallow wildfire in arizona. that fire has now burned almost half a million acres and is the largest in the state's history. human error is believed to be the cause. arizona governor jan brewer took an aerial tour today of some of the other fires burning in her state. there are two out of control fires that are burning in southern arizona and so far those fires have scorched about 225,000 acres. it is the beginning of the bay bridge series tonight in oakland. the parking changes baseball fans will see at the colyseum. thousands of homeowners are trying to find a solution to the mortgage problems and they are meeting with their lenders to do it. find out how can you take advantage of this program. and a warning about a new al-qaeda hit list. the people singled out as target of the terrorist group.

that crime is on the rise and they are not waiting for police to help them out. some residents in oakland hill say they are not covered by police. we have now video proof of the problem that these neighbors are trying to fight. >> reporter: this sexist a pretty quiet neighborhood but according to oakland police, there have been more than 100 burglaries since last year and residents have had enough. >> take a walk through the oakland hills and you will see more of these, signs for private security. over the last two years, there has been a spike in robberies and burglaries in this area. >> we have a lot of issues with late-night, early morning activity. people come and go from the park. we have homeless people who live under the bridge. >> the city council needs to do something more to bring more security. they may want to cut their salaries in half. >> this woman says she is willing to pay for a private security firm to pay to control the neighborhood as long as she does not have to foot the

her home. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news two men linked to a straining of crimes are behind bars tonight in oakland after an overnight standoff with police. officers tracked the suspect from the scene after an armed robbery on 88th avenue at about 10:30. that led police to an apartment complex on east 16th street near seminary avenue. the men inside at first refused to southern der until about 8:45 this morning when they finally came out peacefully. the men are connected to a series of armed robberies and carjackings going back a couple of months. an oakland man is behind bars accused of defrauding seniors by posing as a licensed concrete contractor. samuela lavulavu has been on the run since 2008. he faces charges of grand theft, elder abuse and contracting without a license. authorities say he would request large cash downpayments, begin work and then just walk away from the

job before it was done. >> police in kolma say they have arrested a man suspected in a theft of storage area. ktvu broke this story in march. hazadian and joseph matthew dodd are accused of burglaries in san francisco and daly city. police say they have recovered about $5000 in stolen property connected to burglaries. in antioch, five fires in ten days and some of them have burned within just feet of several homes in that area. arson investigators are turning up the heat on whoever is setting the fires and investigators tell us who they may may be responsible and why they may be doing it. >> probably a kid or a teenager out for kicks. this is fire number 5. it

something she also blamed republicans for. >> what happens to the people when politics, raw politics becomes the central focus of the united states senate? >> boxer said democrats in the senate will keep introducing jobs bills until they can get enough votes to overcome filibuster threats and bring them up for a vote. department of homeland security says it is keeping national guardsmen in place along the u.s.-mexico border for at least three more months. the guard unit support the border patrol watching people from coming into the united states illegally. the obama administration deployed 12,000 soldier and will spend an extra $35 million to extend the deployment through the end of september u.s. conference of mayors plans to debate whether the money spent on the wars spend in iraq and afghanistan should be spent at home.

to where they are. rob roth takes us to one high school in oakland where the seniors share an incredible bond. >> for the class of 2011 in oakland's high school, it may have been an easy walk to the graduation stage but it was a rough and painful road to get here. this student grew up on the rough streets of oakland. his father is in federal prison. >> i was, you know, out there selling drugs, doing some, hanging out with the wrong crowd and trying to get into some trouble, trying to release some of the anger, you know, that i had, that i didn't know how to release it. >> reporter: today, fernando is graduating with a 3.2 grade point and has a full ride scholarship to a university in connecticut. >> it's like a good right. i don't know how it's going to end, but i'm excited to be here. >> the school is a small

today. right now out in the marina in san francisco, you know by chrissie field, you have fog up by four point. fog over in sausalito. this fog is working its way across the city. plenty of fog in the bay and along the coast with temperatures mainly just in the upper 40s and low 50s. fog and little clouds, a big push inland both days as we go into the weekend. the winds as we go into sunday will start to turn around a little bit and we'll look for a bit of a warmup. when i say warmup, this pattern could bring us into the mid- nineties easy, upper nineties. right now looks like mid- nineties. sunday begins the warming trend. monday and tuesday in ernest. the forecast model shows fog working its way back into the coast. that's a much more aggressive push than we saw this morning. or yesterday morning. we have not had much fog. but the fog is back in the game. it's nice now.

history was made at the u.s. open golf tournament. rory mcilroy set the record for the best 36 hole score. the 22-year-old carted 5 under par 66 to put his score at 11 under par headed into the weekend. he was also at 13 under par coming down to the final hole and that set a record for the lowest score at any point ever in u.s. open history. mcilroy has never won a major golf tournament. boston is preparing for something it has not done in 39 years, a victory parade for it hockey team. the bruins captured their first stanley cup since september 11th 72 on wednesday night. the parade is set for tomorrow. the bruins parade is affecting another boston team, the red sox. the team had to change its start time in order to
