the long wait may finally be coming to an end. we are talking with passengers about the united airlines computer glitch that created a travel nightmare. a chase, crash, and a gasoline tanker truck. we will go to the scene of a pursuit. we are starting to realize they are gone. >> the emotional journey for san francisco firefighters after the recent loss of two of their own.

good evening i'm heather holmes. and i'm ken prichard in for ken wayne. thousands of united passengers were left stranded today, and ken da -- and debora talked to passengers caught up in the delay. >> reporter: it's better now than any time in the last 24 hours. the airline and the computers playing catchup all day. >> reporter: from the mouths of babes, the last 24 hours worth wailing about for united airlines and its passengers. this was s.f.o. last night as a massive computer failure planes and stranded travelers. fast forward to this morning, lines incredibly long because even though the technology was humming again, nothing else was. >> when it stops for 5 hours, all the airplanes stopped

moving. they are not where they need to be. what they have to do is not only take care of all the passengers being rebooked but they are trying to reposition flight crews and airplanes to be in the right locations also. >> reporter: the boredom, the worry, the fatigue, all easing now. from completely idle to back on their feet. lines are manageable and moving again. >> we had no problems. we checked in online, we are here, and 3 minutes later, we are on our way. >> reporter: you dodged disaster. >> we did. >> reporter: off to hawaii they go. same with this family. they came expecting the worst, and are now relieved. >> i'm 70 years old, going to hawaii for the first time. they changed my flight from 4:30 to 7:00. >> reporter: you can live with that? >> oh, honey, i can live with that! >> reporter: united is better able to rebound at s.f.o.

because there's more empty jets and bigger jets to add and swap out. they have more flexibility. united described the glitch as a network connectivity issue, but other than that, they have not explained the outage. live at sfo, ktvu news. from san francisco to chicago, the united airlines glitch is being felt across the country. long lines a the o'hare airport, and flights are back on time this evening. the electronic ticket kiosk is down. the airline reduced ticketing staff when it added the automated systems leaving fewer employees to check in passengers. sit down and wait for hundreds of passengers today at denver international airport. the airline handed out water, coffee and snacks and offered hotel vouchers for those who had to wait overnight. for the latest delays, beture to visit ktvu.com and scroll

down to the right now section. >> santa clare sheriff's deputies finding themselves in a pursuit this morning. it ended when a driver crashed into a gasoline tanker truck. eric rasmussen is live at the scene. >> reporter: i just talked to a sergeant in the last hour. the cars were doing donuts, making noise, more than 2 miles 2-mile -- 3 miles from here when they responded. one of the vehicles took off, and you can see they crashed into the building. what happened during the short chase was incredible. just after 5:00 a.m., the driver of a white pickup truck speeding away from deputies in pursuit ran around tanker truck making a turn on the to 101 highway overpass. >> the truck went underneath the tanker truck. that vehicle went into the building behind me to continue over the island.

>> reporter: the driver of the pickup truck, 21-year-old jesus lorera was killed instantly. a passenger was also badly injured in the crash and taken to a local hospital. the tanker truck driver was shaken up but not hurt. we were there as a crew catastrophe patch -- a crew patched up a hole in the side of the sewing shop. the crash did thousands of dollars in damage. the truck, they don't know how fast it was going, but it had to be doing good speeds to make the damage. while san jose police is investigating. the santa clara county sheriff's office is investigating what led up to the chase. there's a pursuit policy. part of the investigation is to find out if deputies tolled low -- followed the policy. we will have more information for you at 10:00. eric rasmussen, channel 2 news. the alleged drunk driver who led police on a chase in

paul low al toe -- palo alto is facing charges for the death of her passenger. the 235 25-year-old was speeding. she was thrown from the vehicle with minor injuries, and her 22- year-old female passenger was killed. the driver faces dui, felony police evasion, and homicide charges when she is released from the hospital. san francisco police are looking for the hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a man in the mission district. a latino in his 40s was walking at 10:40 this morning when he was hit by a white minivan, possibly a chevy. witnesses say it may have front end damage, driven by a african american in his 30s or 40s. police need your help tracking down a man who attacked a jogger. officers say the victim was on 5 creek path yesterday afternoon when the suspect grabbed her and slashed her face and arms with a box cutter

before running off. the suspect is described as a white male in his 30s, standing at 6'2", with a lean build, and i had also has a 2-inch round tattoo on his foreman. the victim was treated at the hospital and released. the second day for the search for michelle lee is wrapping up this evening. volunteer search crews spread out in the park in heywood today. the class kids foundation is coordinating the effort. she disappeared 21 days ago after taking a short break from her job. her family holds out hope of finding her alive but the police are treating it as a homicide investigation. more grief and sadness firefighters at station 26 in san francisco after the recent deaths of two of their own. john sasaki went back to talk about how they are coping. >> reporter: the flag is still

at half staff, but the healing has begun. >> i have the bread in the oven. >> reporter: it was a quiet day for the department. there are reminders everywhere of the two men lost in the june 2nd house fire. >> it's kind of still new, and as it quiets down, i think each person at the fire house will discover, oh, you know, i miss tony talking about his bread in the morning or vinny helping with the rigs. >> reporter: first was shock and then last week's massive funeral, all with the daily tasks of being firefighters. these men say now that everything is over, the full impact is hitting them. >> we are starting to miss tony and vinny. we haven't had time to do that. we are starting to realize they are gone. >> reporter: the only action was when they drove to another fire station to gat up. june co -- to gas up. june codder filled in today. >> i wasn't there the day of the fire.

i wish i could have been to help out a bit. >> that's for hugs. >> reporter: back home the crew said the support from the community is helping them heal. >> being a fire fighter is a good thing. they call you and you come and help people. when they saw we were in need they came together to help us out. >> reporter: it's clear the two will be with these men on the job, always. >> it will be an advantage in courage and our approach. they will be in our minds and our hearts. >> reporter: officials say the third firefighter hurt in the incident just went back to work. >> reporter: i'm john sasaki, channel 2 news. an update on a story we brought you this morning, a shooting in oakland that left a teenager dead. christian daniel garcia of oakland was found in this van at siminary and vancroft

avenues. so far no word on a motive and no arrests have been made. a description of the gunman has not been released. prosecutors are considering their next step tonight after a judge declared a mistrial in the competency hearing far san mataoe child psychologist accused of molesting his patients. the jury deadlocked if he has the mental capacity to defend himself. eight found him unfit for trial. four did not. he is charged with nine counts of lewd acts on seven boys for 1991 to 1996. new bill boards have gone up in oakland aimed to spark discussion on abortion, but some say it's the wrong message. we hear who is behind the bill boards and the response they are getting. >> reporter: across the street from the bart station, the

title reads black and beautiful. >> it disturbing me, but i didn't know why. >> the website makes you realize what it's trying to say. >> reporter: william is behind issues for life foundation, the group held a press conference this morning to talk about the 60 bill boards like this one going up across oakland. >> i'm looking to raise awareness and create an environment for dialogue. >> reporter: they are in barbara lee's district, and she is not happy about them. >> they stigmatize african american women. all women should have a right to make their own decisions without anyone interfering with the personal decisions. >> reporter: bill board supporters fired back. >> what about saying our children are black and beautiful is an attack on black women? >> reporter: they said it's directed to black women on purpose because they have higher abortion rates than women of other races. >> we should be able to look at

father's day weekend can be lonely for kids with a parent in prison but today was a first. a bus full of children were allowed to go past the prison gate at san quinten. >> reporter: outside dead silence, outside, laughter. fathers holding sons, and daughters drawing for dad. parents and children had a chance to embrace and reflect. >> for her to overcome what she has had to endure, by me not being in her life, i'm proud of her for that. >> reporter: for years troy williams only had a picture. today he had much more.

his daughter eye-to-eye. >> just to touch and hold your family, that's something we don't get to do. >> a lot of kids don't have their dead. i'm blessed to know mine and thankful to even know that i still have one. >> reporter: now many children have parents inside of the prison? 200. that's 200,000 with a parent here inside of san quintin or a prison inside of california. >> they look at their dad and try to see themselves reflected in their father's eyes or features. >> reporter: sister diane freeborn founded get on the bus for children with parents who are inmates. marquis may spend the rest of his life in prison, but he is proud to be a dad. >> some of my family members share with me how lucky i am to have a son like him.

>> reporter: smiles behind the walls on this father's day weekend. ktvu, channel 2 news. americans are spending more on their dads this year. a few survey by the national retail federation shows people will spend $106 for father's day, up from $94 last year. the report says the total spending for the holiday, expected to reach more than $11 billion. texas representative ron paul today won the presidential straw poll at the republican leadership conference. the libritarian candidate won 106 votes at the louisiana event. utah governor onhuntsman -- john huntsman was second place followed by michele bachmann and mitt romney. president obama and john boehner agreed on something today. they played 18 holes of golf

together. it also included joe biden and ohio governor john casase. it's unclear what they discussed. preventing the routine use of human antibiotics in animal feed. it's proposed as a new law. it. the resis tan -- resistensy is said to be passed on to humans. thousands of people came together in san francisco today to celebrate history. the june team festival kicked off with a parade that led spectators to philmore street commemorating the end of slavery. >> today is a day of unity.

today is a day of the first day of freedom for all of us. >> organizers say it's the biggest gathering of african american in northern america. the festivities will continue tomorrow. that was not the only festival bringing the city to life today. the 57th annual north beach festival began this morning in washington square park. the 2-day event features live entertainment, gourmet food and unique art. organizers call it one of the original outdoor festivals, and festival goers say it's a great way to celebrate the italian culture. >> ial i -- italian chalk art and of course food. you're on north beach. >> a a lot of blue skies for the festivals. we will check in with mark

tamayo. nice day. >> reporter: that's right, heather. the forecast will improve into the second half of the weekend. we have fog to talk about primarily coast side and a few high clouds. the wind speeds have been cranking up, and the latest buoy report show the winds gusting to 24 miles an hour. with that, the fog will be on the increase for the bay in the overnight hours. the fog is on a bit of a breeze. tomorrow, warmer. warming up for sunday. the extended forecast, more sunshine, temperatures really heating up into early next week. first thing tomorrow morning, coolest locations in the 50s for santa rosa and napa. a few patches into the bay to start out sunday morning. the trough has been cooling off a good portion of the bay area for the last 2 to 3 days. the strong high pressure rebuilding in the pacific. with that, that will initiate the warming trend as it moves into the area.

that coupleed with the offshore breeze, the warmest locations mid-80s to upper 80s, and the warming trend will continue. by tuesday, the hottest locations inland will be mid- to upper 90s. significant bump in the numbers over the next few days. forecast models showing you fog. first thing is right now, and then we will take it into tomorrow morning for sunday morning. fog concentrated coastline around the bay. look what happen as the offshore wind develops. the increase in sunshine, sunshine, and a noticeable warmup headed into tomorrow afternoon. it could be 5 to 15 degrees warmer than today's highs. tomorrow morning, low to mid- 50s out there. 12:00, clearing skies, and then by 3:00 the afternoon forecast for tomorrow. there's the eventually temperature range. low 60s for the beaches, upper 80s inland. fairfield around 88. oakland, 76. warmest locations, upper 80s to around the 90-degree mark.

a very big picnic table was assembled on san francisco's marina green. safeway put the 305-foot picnic table together in a bid to win the world record. celebrity chef tyler lauren fixed the table with all the food. >> looks like a nice thing. sports, i guess you have to run fast to catch up with mackelroy. >> reporter: yes, as fast as they set up the table. for the last few years the golfers wondered when the next star will be. mackelroy is making a good case. suddenly fans are recognizing the 22-year-old. he started the day with a 6-
