>> reporter: look how high the brush has grown, it's this type of fuel that sent flames racing across the hillside, firefighters say. the sounds of flames burning through this dry brush had some people fearing the worse for their home. >> i was sure it was going to burn down. >> reporter: firefighters got the call after 3:00 and crews from five departments rushed in to help. firefighters did not have much time or room to spare, the flames came right up this hill and even took out the backside of this home. >> we got scared, my mom started crying and everything. it was scary. >> reporter: moses and his family were among those on francisca and rinconada court who said they had to evacuate. the type of brush burning in this fire is among the most volatile in the area and we

could be in store for a high fire season. they managed to contain the fire to two acres before the flames reached any homes or crossed the highway. but it's still not clear where or how the fire started. >> we have a lot of leads we're following up on. we have no determination at this point other than the fact that we have multiple fires. >> reporter: we talked to one teenager out here today who says he was questioned by investigators on this fire. eric rasmussen. a father's day outing turned troublesome. rescuers were called and responded to reports of a capsized boat. a young father from richmond drives away from the boat dock around 5:00 tonight. his trailer empty, his fishing boat lost at sea. at least he has his life as his two young kids.

>> we heard him yelling for help. we knew we had to do something. >> reporter: samuelson saw the trouble. >> they were doing figure eights on the water. then the boat capsized. >> i didn't think we were able to paddle out and reach them because they kept floating out farther. but i said we have to try. >> reporter: the coast guard and alameda firefighters arrived ten minutes later. >> we put three swimmers on the water and got there relatively quickly. they got there right as we got there. >> reporter: the alameda fire department has been criticized for failing to rescue a suicidal man from drowning because their water rescue certification wasn't up to date. >> i'm through day one and i have day two tomorrow. it's pretty ironic that we have

a rescue between those two days. >> reporter: samuelson is one the firefighters getting certified for water rescue. a senior captain can now make on the scene decisions. >> we can actually go and do the things that a lot of us got in to do but our policy was restricted. >> reporter: the rescuers were for the most part unharmed. just cold, a father's day they will not soon forget. patti lee. another water emergency today in oak land. once oakland fire and alameda crews put out the fire they launched a search who would have been on that boat who could have ended up in the water. their search turned up nothing. the man was found shot last

night in west oakland and pronounced dead. the tribune identified clay of richmond. he may have been visiting friends in the area. police have no suspects or a motive. it was oakland's 51st homicide of the year. 39 homicides had occurred by this time last year. san francisco police are on the hunt for a suspect in an early morning stabbing. it happened around 2:00. police found a man in his 20s with several cuts near his throat. he was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. so far police have made no arrest and no suspect description has been released. and tonight a family is helping all volunteers who have spent three days combing the grounds for michelle l earthquake. it was - - michelle le.

it was a very difficult father's day for the father of michelle le. >> reporter: armed with bug spray, and sung le was going with them. >> the only present i want for father's day today is michelle le. >> reporter: she went missing three weeks ago. police are investigating her case as a homicide. but her father's determination does not waiver. >> we just have to keep going. because in our heart we believe michelle is still alive. she needs to be rescued, that's why we're here. >> reporter: since friday more than 400 people have volunteered to help with the search and the le family says they are moved and overwhelmed by the turn out. >> you can feel the support. it's-- you can't touch it, you can't see it but you feel it. >> reporter: police warn the family not to publicize exact

search locations. they were afraid someone might plant false evidence. volunteers combed through several square miles of land this weekend. >> they've eliminated a lot of area that michelle is not in. and that's definitely helping law enforcement. >> reporter: this is the second day this volunteer came out. >> another long day in the sun and hopefully we can turn up something that can be useful to the investigation. >> reporter: before this weekend he had never met the le family. >> i have a daughter the same age. i felt compelled to come out here. >> reporter: the le family says this isn't the end of their effort. they say as long as michelle is missing they will continue to put together volunteers and search along with them. it was an emotional father's day for the children of bryan stow. the giant fan brutally beaten in the giant stadium parking lot. his children tyler and tabitha visited their father in san francisco general. the family usually spends father's day at a giant's day. yesterday the children said it has been tough not being with

their dad at home. stow remains in a coma. a man is behind bars facing charges that he made and detonated pipe bombs. garcia was in a stand off with police. garcia kept officers at bay for hours before he surrendered. investigators say garcia is suspected of planting and detonating a pipe bomb under a car in may. that blast on phoenix drive started a fire and led to evacuations of near by homes. tomorrow activists in oakland are planning a large read in in front of city hall to call on the city council to keep libraries open. on friday, 16 people were arrested in a similar protest. currently the city council is considering a number of proposals including one that would result in the closures of 15 of the cities 18 libraries. the protest is scheduled to go from 6:00 in the morning to 3:

fanning the winds of massive wildfires across the northwest. lauren ingel now takes us to the line of the fire. >> reporter: dozens of fires are now reportedly burning in arizona, new mexico and texas and the weather is not cooperating. the national weather service expects high heat, low humidity in the region. fire officials report it's now about 40% contained. >> we saw it firsthand when it came into town. once it hit the thin area it was more manageable. >> reporter: as winds continue to push the fire into neighboring new mexico, authorities are evacuating the small town of luna as a precaution. arizona is also battling another major wildfire near

sierra vista. the monument fire has torched at least 40 homes, it's about 30% contained. >> i was looking up in the hills because we have some friends and it looks like it's good news it appears their house, if the fire didn't get down that far. >> reporter: also in eastern texas, a big wildfire that started friday is threatening dozens of homes. scorching about 15,000 acres. >> this has been an ongoing thing for the next couple of months. it's dry out. the smallest fire doesn't take long to spread. >> reporter: nationwide wildfires have burned almost as many acres in the first half of this year as were recorded for all of 2010. so far more than 3 million acres have been burned. in new york, laura engel, fox news. congresswoman gabby giffords has returned to houston today after spending the weekend in arizona.

new at 10:00 tonight a jogger is flashed in the north bay and police want to find their attacker. debra villalon has the story. >> reporter: it happened on the five creek trail which runs behind several apartment complexes. a routine run that became a life or death struggle >> this is frightening to a community like ours. >> reporter: police are keeping their eye on this track where a woman was attacked. barely out of her apartment, she jogged about 50 yards

before he struck. >> she saw him and was trying to run around him at the time. and he reached out and grabbed ahold of her. >> reporter: she pugged away, struggled and he tried to swipe at her face with a box cutter type blade. >> reached out, he was going to slash her. she luckily was able to put out her hands. >> reporter: he attacker disappeared into the surrounding brush, violence unusual for this community. >> people come out and walk all the time and enjoy the safety and comforts of living in roner park so this is pretty isolated incident for something like this to happen here. >> that's like right next door to us so it's kind of freaky. >> reporter: this mother using the path to get her daughter to school or the park. and is surprised by what happened. >> i'm always a cautious person, never walk by myself. >> reporter: the victim got a

good look at the suspect. a white man in his 30s, tall with a goatee and a bald head. he was wearing a white tea with tobacco stains on it. >> after the incident, her blood was on the tank top as well. she fought back. >> reporter: police say this was a random attack. they are urging people now to buddy up on the footpaths. they are getting a fair number of tips. live in roner park, debra villalon. police tonight are searching for a person of interest named kevin ray stone. he is described with brown eyes and brown hair. standing at 5'10" and weighing 170 pounds.

stone was arrested several times over the past two years on charges that include firearms and child endangerment. united airlines is still playing catch up tonight after a massive computer failure forced cancellations of flights here in the bay area and all across the country. ktvu was at sfo friday night when the glitch left thousands of passengers stranded nationwide. airport officials now say there have been no major delays today but united warns it could take several days to rebook those affected by the outage. you can check on flights and their status by going to our website ktvu.com and scrolling down to the right now section. a bomb scare briefly stopped inbound air traffic today at washington's reagan national airport. it all started when officials say a woman made a threat at the u.s. airways ticket counter at dayton international airport in ohio. that woman is in custody tonight. the threat forced the light from dayton to land far from

the gates in washington. flights were not allowed to land at reagan national until the plane was swept for explosives, nothing was found. mitt romney is expected to swing through the golden state this week. according to the l.a. times the former massachusetts governor will make stops in the bay area, sacramento, los angeles and orange county. one of those fundraisers is slated for fuse day at the portola -- slated for tuesday at the portola area. republicans enjoying an imitation of president obama ended up yanking the act off the stage. comedian reggie brown entertained the crowd last night at the republican leadership conference in new orleans. but some of his jokes were too much for the gop audience. >> but the economy is frail. it's barely moving. it's gasping for air.

father's day keeping cool with his daughters. the father's day outing comes just a day before the girl's travel with their mother first lady michelle to africa. that visit is meant to help u.s.-africa relations. on this father's day new numbers show the nature of dads at work and dads who stay at home. maureen naylor visited with a south bay father who's job is in the home. >> this is like a preschool 24 hours, seven days a week. it's a nonstop action. >> reporter: nonstop action for this former contract administrator, part time referee. >> you need to share. >> reporter: and full time stay at home father. for alexis,briana and diana. >> when you go to a park, there's not a lot of dads out there. most of the time when we go to the park, i'm the only father. >> reporter: he stays at home

because his wife had a better paying job and insurance. >> we thought if we hire a babysitter or child care it would pretty much use up all his income. >> reporter: last year there were 154,000 stay at home dads like alex t they've remained out of the work force for at least a year to care for their families while their wives work. the census bureau shows there are 70 million fathers in the u.s. 1.8million are single fathers and more than 28 million are married with children younger than 18. >> we come home from work and i could hear her footsteps as she hears the door unlocking that probably makes my day every day. biggest change is making sure i spent a lot of time with them, between all the demands of work and everything else. >> reporter: which is why walking hand in hand was the best father's day present. maureen naylor, ktvu news. san francisco continues to see the percentage of children who live in the city decline.

today from the pulpit. calls at church to improve conditions for domestic workers. silvia lopez has made her living for the last decade by cleaning houses. today she stood before the congregation to tell her story, she talked to us with the help of a translator. >> i'm giving my testimony today because i would like all of the domestic workers to be able to work with dignity and respect. >> reporter: that's sometimes hard to find for domestic workers who often work without benefit, set hours or guaranteed wages. lopez told her story to this congregation but she wasn't alone. dozens of other domestic workers told stories to congregations across the bay area. almost 30 churches heard stories like silvia's. it's a movement going on in the bay area. the bill would require meals

now for this time in san jose. 60s to report in san francisco and oakland. yesterday santa rosa only in the lower 70s. look what happened today. that wind is a down sloping wind, and it is a warming wind. 34degrees warmer than yesterday's 70. you can see a warmer temperature, fremont up to 81 and san jose right around 86. forecast for tonight is this. mostly clear skies. still on the mild side, tomorrow we continue to warm up. the fog will return and warm us up. high pressure continues to build in. it's also going to generate that northernly breeze. the beach is everyone warming back up into the lower 70s.

tuesday daze the tuesday the warmest day of the week. and then we'll gradually cool things off beginning wednesday. here's our forecast model showing you the eventual temperature range. 70 coast side, here we go with the red contour of widespread 90s for santa rosa out toward antioch, livermore and san jose. we're going to go with 90 degrees in the afternoon. here's our bay area forecast, 7:00 tomorrow morning. 55 to right around 60 degrees. by 12:00, 70 to 85. already warming up by the lunchtime hour. by 3:00, warm to hot. there's that eventual temperature range. warmest location around 94 to 95 degrees. oakland tops out 95. livermore 95 degrees. livermore spot on 90. you know it's going to be warm in san francisco i'm forecasting 80 degrees. just beautiful downtown san francisco tomorrow afternoon.
