>> reporter: for many people this is the perfect kind of weather to go jet skiing. we are standing on the pittsburg marina. the water here behind us is part of the sacramento rushest. this island behind us is called down's island. deputies say it's a virtual maze. you can see some of the grass here where we're standing. it's very tricky to navigate in and out of that island on 0 jet ski. that's exactly where those two jet skiers got into trouble yesterday. we watched as the contra costa county marine patrol units brought the jet skiers back to shore after they had been strand the and stuck on a single jet ski for nearly eight hours. they launched from the marina about 5:30. they got stuck and the grass

plugged up the pumps and knocked out the jet ski engines. one of the jet skis sank. the men didn't have their cell phones or any way to contact anyone on shore. >> we're trying to make it to -- to -- toite i -- to the island. we were kind of pushing the jet ski. >> reporter: did i have cell phones. >> no. this could have been prevented. a lot of this water near the island is two feet deep with heavy grass. a lot of people don't know that. >> reporter: now, the khost guard helicopter spotted the men from the air but the water was too shallow and the sheriffs brought their boat out. the two jet skiers were fine and they didn't need to go to the hospital. deputies say what saved them, it was about 70 degrees

7:30. the supreme court in breaking news just moments ago has ruled for walmart in its fight to block a massive sex discrimination lawsuit on behalf of women who -- who worked there. the court ruled unanimously the lawsuit against walmart cannot proceed as a class action and that reverses the decision by the 9th u.s. circuit court of appeals in san francisco. the lawsuit could have involved

up to 1.6 million with walmart facing potentially billions of dollars in damages. now, the handful of women who brought the lawsuit including local walmart greeter, betty dukes of pittsburg, may pursue claims on their hone with much less -- own with much less money at stake. the protest plans to eliminate libraries are happening in oakland right now. jade hernandez has more. she's live. jade? >> reporter: that's right. the read-in is on, dave. we're live at the amphitheater in front of city hall. we're on hour two and each hour is dedicated to if leaders were decided to shut these down. this hour is dedicated to brookfield branch. at the podium is amy. she works at one of the local branches here in oakland. she told us this morning that it's important that the

community come out and be art of the -- be part of the read- in. now, closing 14 libraries in oakland would only leave four oakland libraries remaining. oakland police arrested 16 people at a demonstration on friday. the group which organized that protest bay of rage, offered an alternative to closing libraries. that's cutting police. save oakland libraries another coalition of concerned city residents organized today's read-in and to write the oakland police association. the coalition wants police officers to make a fair share contribution to the retirement in order to save money and lie prairies.

running and tried to slash her face with a box cutter. >> reach odd out and she was going to slash her. >> the 23-year-old woman was badly cut on her forearm by defending herself. her injury required a dozen stitches. now, the woman described her attacker as a tall, lean, white nan in his 30s with a goatee and a bald head. the fire department at the center of a controversy helped out on a water rescue. that's after a father's day outing turned into real trouble on the san francisco bay. the coast guard was called in to help his father and two children. the alameda firefighters then helped pull them to safety. at that particular -- that particular fire department has been criticized for watching a suicidal man drowned over the memorial day weekend. the rules have changed.

police are investigating a stabbing that has a man in his 20s fighting for his life. it happened early yesterday morning on 4th and harrison near whole foods market. police say the attacker slashed the man's throat during a fight on the street. the victim is now listed in critical condition at san francisco general hospital. at this point, police only have a vague description of the attacker. and novato police are looking for the four or five men who stabbed another men another man over the weekend. it happened on hutchins way. officers say the men suddenly attacked a man walking do you the street. they then left the scene on foot. the man survived the condition and is in stable condition at the hospital. a lawsuit centers around a proposed parking lot at the college of san mateo. opponents are trying to stop construction. they claim the parking lot will

welcome back. a simple request by a homeless man in ohio. he wanted to see his dog one more time. the dog eted -- ended up at a shelter after a homeless man became ill with lung cancer. the people who adopted her sheer say she's a dog who has a lot of love and energy and brought it into the home. they cooperated with the paramedic, the shelter anded the hospice -- and the hospice house and granted the dying man's wish. >> the moment he opened his eyes and saw that dog, there was instant recognition. and the dog licked his arms, his face. >> and that was it. >> this was a couple of days later that mr. mcclain passed away. in the meantime, the dog has gone back to its new owners who feel very lucky to have it as

good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. it's monday, it's june 21st. topping our news right now, two people were hurt just a couple of hours ago in an early- morning apartment house fire in sunnyvale. this started about 2:00 a.m. not far from highway 101 and most of the people who lived there are now going back to their homes. ktvu's kraig debro has been out there all morning talking to some of those fire victims. kraig? >> reporter: when we said they were going back to their homes,

we meant the fire department and the red cross are trying to figure out who they need to help. about 53 people who live in this apartment complex right there are displace the because of the fire. we're also -- displace the because of the fire. we're also learning that the water damage is -- this area right here, that's causing people to find new lodging. crews had a tough time squeezing between power lines on either end. flareups continued for more than three hours after the fire was first called into 911 at around 1:50 this morning. before the fire was hut 1 put out, four apartments -- was put out, four apartments were destroyed. the building's manage ershut off the power and watt -- manager shut off the power and water and will not allow anyone to live here. for the tenants who were not

vague debro, ktvu channel 2 news -- kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. police launched a successful operation overnight in contra costa county after two jet skiers got stranded. allie rasmus is live with more. >> reporter: good morning, tori. we are standing on the pittsburg marina. the water behind us is part of the sacramento river. from where we're standing, we we have a clear view of the areas where the two jet skiers got into trouble. this island is brown's island. if we zoom in, you can see there's small channels and waterways you can navigate through. now, at low tide, this water can be very shallow. just two feet deep in spots. when you go through it on a set ski, you run the risk of grass getting stuck in the pump and that can knock out the engine. that's exactly what happened to two jet skiers around 5:30. they got stuck and stranded on the water for eight hours

overnight. we watched as rescuers brought the 30 and 20-year-old je skiers -- jet skiers back up. one of the jet skis sank. the two men got on the one jet ski. they didn't have any cell phones or any way to contact anyone onshore to let anyone know they needed help. a coast guard helicopter spotted them from the air and a contra costa county sheriff marine patrol boat brought them back to shore. the two men were not injured and they didn't have to go to the hospital. >> one of the jets broke down. it wouldn't turn back on. >> you had two jet skis? >> yes. >> the one that broke down -- >> one of them broke down and drowned. >> they were very lucky. they weren't wearing wet suits or have any other clothing. they were very lucky it was 70 degrees all night long. >> reporter: deputies say last
