firefighters are still on the scene of a fire right here in east oakland. this fire has sent a firefighter to the hospital. we have all the details straight ahead. five dogs and a cat dead overnight in brentwood. neighbors believed all were poisoned. why they blame another neighbor for the deaths. get ready for a hot day. the alert issued as a result. it's all ahead here on the ktvu morning news.

good morning. thank you for waking up with us, it's tuesday, june 21st, i'm pam cook. get the laundry in early and hop on bart or muni if you can because it's going to be hot and it's a spare the air day. steve, how hot is it going to be? >> i'm not doing laundry, pam, no way. it'll be hot today. the real shocker was downtown san francisco yesterday at 88 degrees. i'm going 85 today. there's some fog coming up the coast by monterey, but that may kick in later along the coast, but inland it won't matter. we'll have upper 90s and maybe 100 degrees. pam. >> thank you, steve. we start with developing news from oakland after an overnight fire injured a firefighter. it happened just after 2:00 this morning on 23rd avenue near east 17th street. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us now with how firefighters are doing and how that one firefighter in particular is doing right now. jade. >> reporter: i can tell you right now that firefighter is headed straight to the hospital. he suffered a back injury. we can take you right in

because firefighters are still out here right now. they're looking for hot spots. this is a structure, this victorian home renovated into a couple different apartments. you can see that there's firefighters on the top floor. we were told that the attic was converted into living space, and i spoke to a family member who told me that there's two families that live inside of this home this morning. we're live at east 17th and 23rd avenue, and this fire started just after 2:00 this morning. that firefighter that was hurt was taken to the hospital by the public information officer out here on the scene. we've been told that this fire was concentrated on the first floor, the living area, and that this was a one-alarm fire right after about 2:06 this morning. i've been told that four engines are out here and a truck. and as i mentioned earlier, firefighters are just trying to look for hot spots at this point. the american red cross is out

here helping both families try to find what they need to do now, and, actually, they're looking here -- firefighters are telling me they don't think anybody is going to get back inside. now, we spoke to a captain. you'll hear from the captain in just about a half hour. we'll also talk to family and we'll bring you that shortly. reporting live from east oakland, jade hernandez ktvu channel 2 news. we are following another developing story in oakland right now. these are live pictures near a home that police are surrounding on sigh ro road just -- cairo road just west of 880. police have been there since about 10:40 last night. here's what's happening, police say a man inside the home showed off a gun and then barricaded himself inside his home. s.w.a.t teams arrived about 11:00 last night. neighbors have been told to stay inside their homes. now, we have a crew on the scene gathering more information from investigators. we're going to check in with them in just about 30 minutes. again, this is in oakland.

animal control officers in brentwood are investigating the deaths of several poisoned pets. it's a story you will see only here on 2. right now ktvu's craig debro is talking with one of the angry bet owners. kraig, what happened? >> reporter: as you mentioned, pam, last night after our newscast, we learned that four dogs and a cat were poisoned out here in this brentwood neighborhood. we arrived here 4:10 this morning, and as we arrived i heard a commotion from around the corner, and i went over to see what was going on. and when i walked over, tony diat who lives around the corner. we spoke to you last night about three of your pet that is had been poisoned, two dogs and a cat. but one of the pets you had with you last night was okay. what happened? >> me and my wife, we got home, we went to bed, and, like, we'll deal with this another day, real emotional. and about 3:00, maybe 2:50, 3:00, my little dog started,

like barking, almost like a yelp bark. it was craziness. >> reporter: this is the dog you had with you last night? >> yes. >> reporter: what's the dog's name? >> her name is daisy ann. >> reporter: what happened? >> she started yelping, going crazy, running around the house, she was letting her urine go, a little bit of feces. i was, like, is she scared, did someone try to break in. i get ready to prepare for a home invasion or something and my other dogs aren't really going off as much, and she just keeps running around to each door. okay, does she have to go potty? she went running out like she was going to take off down the street. i was, like, what are you doing. >> reporter: you called the vet? >> yeah. what's this behavior. they said to bring her in and run tests. as soon as i got off the phone with them, she went right into my daughter's room, right underneath her bed, i thought

she was dead because she stopped moving. once i pulled her out, she'd gone into seizures at that point and, like, her body was seizing. we got to the vet in 10 minutes and by that time she was done. >> reporter: we're going to talk more about this a little later this morning, but this is the third pet, fourth pet that you've had that died overnight and you believe it's a poisoning. we're also going to talk to two neighbors from the same neighborhood who had two dogs they believed were poisoned. they found evidence of meat laced with antifreeze they believe. contra costa county animal control has been around. we'll talk more about that as well, as well as try to talk to the neighbor who these people believe might be behind this all. reporting live in brentwood, kraig debro, ktvu news. today is the first day of summer and spare of air day. air officials say the air could be especially bad in eastern and central contra costa county. poor air quality could cause breeting problems for children and people with asthma. you're asked to avoid driving and put away the charcoal

barbecues and gas-powered garden tools. this morning san francisco police say they had to use pepper spray to help break up an out-of-control fight. it happened at about 9:15 last night on third and newcomb in the bayview district. officers say they arrived on the scene to help break up a fight between about 14 girls, but that when the girls wouldn't stop, officers used pepper spray. that's when more people showed up and started throwing bottles. officers arrested one person. this morning oakland police are investigating two homicides. officers responded to reports of shots fired at 32nd and market streets at about 8:30 last night. they didn't find any victims, but tell us that four people showed up at local hospitals with gunshot wounds. one of them died, one of the other victims is pregnant. her head and back were grazed by bullets. police have not made any arrests. and shortly after noon yesterday police say a man was shot while driving on bancroft

avenue between 73nd and 73rd avenues. he ended up crashing into some cars a few blocks away. witnesses took him to the nearby eastmont police station. he was taken to highland hospital where he later died. police say they are working to identify him and the person who shot him. the man police call the prime suspect in the beating of giants fan brian stowe is heading to prison. giovanni ramirez was ordered to spend 10 months behind bars for a parole violation involving a gun. investigators say they found a handgun in a laundry basket where ramirez was staying when they arrested him. ramirez' parole attorney says they will appeal. now, ramirez has not been charged with stowe's beating. his attorney says his client wasn't anywhere near dodger stadium the day stowe was attacked. the attorney also claims 11 family members and friends of ramirez have provided an alibi for him.

brian stowe remains in critical but stable condition in san francisco. invenergy will -- pg and e will pay $26 million in fines as a result of a deadly gas explosion near sacramento in 2008. the blast claimed the life of a 72-year-old man in rancho cordova. pg and e admitted it violated safety laws in connection with the explosion. the violations include installing a pipe with thinner walls than allowed for gas lines and failing to test the pressure adequately. the fine still requires final approval from the commissioner of the cpuc. thousands of caltrans workers are heading back to work this morning. yesterday they held a a statewide safety standdown. they put all california highway maintenance projects on hold for the day and that was in response to the recent deaths of three caltrans workers on state highways. the standdown gave caltrans workers time to reflect on the

hazards they face everyday. >> it's horrible. it's devastating, you know, somebody's father is not coming home today or son, husband, they're not coming home. >> larry mcí peak is now a caltrans supervisor after spending 20 years in the field. he remembers a horrible day back in 1994 when a tanker plowed into a caltrans crew in san leandro, killing several of his colleagues. 4:40 is the time. the freeway signs say be careful of workers out there this morning. they're usually out there very early. >> reporter: that's right. there are some on the way into work this morning. for me i saw them and the police sometimes are there at these road closures to make sure everything is safe. so slow down out there. let's go out and take a look at some of these pictures we have you. east shore freeway, westbound looks good out to the mcí arthur maze. also the morning commute looks

good if you are traveling out to the toll plaza. there are no major problems there. and if you're in san jose, 280 and 101 still looking good on the major highways. 440, let's go to steve. >> reporter: sal, thank you, sir. yesterday, as you know, we sent temperatures up coast, bay, inland, didn't matter, everybody was not the 70s by the water's edge, the 80s and 90s and close to 100. fog is out there. it's coming up the monterey bay, caramel, it's trying to circle the wagons, but a tough call until maybe 1:00 or 2:00 in the afternoon. you're already sitting 50s, 60s. mountainview 68, san jose 68. 66 concord. i mean, it's really warm out. not much of a breeze, west/northwest sfo, southwest at fairfield, but, i mean, you need fairfield up 20, 25 for the cooler air to commence. the north wind is starting to ease off a little bit, so the fog will try to work its way closer to the coast, but any

impact would only be on the coast. nice for some, sunny for others and just too darned hot or just right for others, depending on your opinion. late sea breeze, i think santa cruz, monterey bay and the san mateo coast will feel the effects today. highs from 70 to 100 degrees. 90s inland, 80s and 86 in the city, although that may happen by 1:00 and then the temperature will fall off the table. but we'll go with it for now. sunny, warm to hot, fog starts to work its way back wednesday, big cooling trend thursday, friday, saturday and temperatures stay mainly below average as we head into the weekend. pam. >> wow! quite a change. overnight eight people survive, but 44 others died in a russian jet crash. the technical failure that may have played a role in that crash. after months of delay, the uc-berkeley graduates charged with spying in iran have a new hearing date. when shane bauer and josh fattal are heading back to court.

we have breaking news in san jose. this san jose camera shows us a fire in san jose on south 11th street, about a block away from san jose state. it's a three-alarm fire. we don't know if there are any injuries, correct, just getting it here with the desk? no injuries reported according to our desk as we yell across the newsroom. ktvu does have a crew very close to the scene as we arrive. but you can see these pictures.

and, by the way, this picture is from a building downtown, somewhat of a distance away. you can see how big the flames are. you can see them throughout san jose and it's dark. you also see black and thick smoke rising into the san jose skyline. ktvu is on it. we'll be there very shortly and have more on this fire. but, again, reports of no injuries, three alarms, and we'll be right with this fire coming up. 4:46. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. some people have been allowed to return home in arizona as firefighters make progress battling wildfires there. the wallow fire along the new mexico border is now 56% contained. evacuation orders have been lifted for the small town of greer. the town lost 20 homes and cabins. people forced out by the monument fire are waiting to survey the damage. at least 60 homes and several businesses in sierra vista have been lost. the monument fire is 27%

contained. now, favorable weather conditions are expected to help firefighters, though, today. firefighters here in california expect a wildfire burning in two counties to be fully contained tonight. more than 400 firefighters are fighting the antelope fire in kern and san abizpo county. that fire started sunday in an oil field. two structures have been destroyed but no injuries have been reported and the cause is still under investigation. clearing brush around your home may not only help reduce fire danger, it could also save you some money. mill valley's fire department is taking aggressive steps to prevent wildfires. firefighters are going door to door inspecting homes. they want to make sure that each has at least 30 feet of defensible face. mill valley's fire chief says compliance, which is mandatory, can save you money. >> insurance rates are pretty set, so it can definitely save you money if you really do some

serious landscaping. >> disownlts depend on the property -- discounts depend on the property and the insurance company. overnight a russian passenger jet crashed into a highway, killing 44 people. the jet had just taken off from moscow and was headed to an airport in northern russia. it slammed into the highway in heavy fog about a half a mile from the airport and burst into flames. a woman captured that burning plane on her cell phone camera. eight people survived the crash, but they are in critical condition. russian officials say fog lights at the airport failed. two sue cried car bomb -- suicide car bombers killed 22 people in iraq today. many of the victims are police officers. now, the bombers set off their explosives near a government compound south of baghdad in . in addition to the 22 people killed, dozens more are injured. a new hearing date has been set for the three americans charged with espionage in iran.

a lawyer for shane bauer, josh fattal and sarah shourd said he was noticed a hearing would be held on july 31st. a hearing was supposed to be held in may, but canceled by the government. the three detainees were captured in 2009 along the iran/iraq border. bauer and fattal are still in custody and showered has refused to return for trial. tomorrow president obama will announce his plans to withdraw u.s. troops from afghanistan beginning next month. currently there are about 100,000 american troops in afghanistan. that includes the 30,000 surge troops sent there in 2009. some of the president's advisers are pushing for a significant troop drawdown soon, while others, like retiring defense secretary robert gates are calling for a gradually reduction. in just about an hour, the trial for the florida mom accused of killing her daughter

will continue in orlando after an unexpected break. the judge in the casey anthony murder trial ended monday's session early after he ordered the attorneys in the case to stop their so-called gamemanship. now, the warning came after the attorneys accused each other of delay tactics. the judge told the two sides to stop fighting. he also asked both lawyers to look at the clock and tell him the time. each game him a different number. >> i ask both sides to turn around and look at that clock back there and tell me. that shows the two of you will never agree on anything and will never interpret anything the same way. >> casey anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter. she faces the death penalty if convicted. also this morning several bay area labor groups will hold a rally in downtown san francisco. now, they will protest yesterday's u.s. supreme court

decision that threw out the largest sex discrimination class action lawsuit in u.s. history. it began 10 years ago when a store greeter from an east bay wal-mart claimed that she was not getting the same opportunities as men. the lawsuit eventually involved 1.6 million women and could have cost wal-mart billions of dollars. stanford is putting plans for its hospital on hold for at least a month. that's after parents have children at the abor eat um day care center say cruz would take place 30 feet from the facility. parents are worried about cruz noise and air pollution that could harm their children. stanford says it will resolve the issue before continuing with the $5 billion expansion project. new numbers on auto theft are out this morning, and it's not good news in california. the areas considered the nation's hot spots for car thieves. and spend the first day of summer in a national park.

today welcome back to the morning news. auto thefts are down across the country, but california and especially the central valley continues to be the nation's top hot spots. now, in numbers released today by the national insurance crime bureau, the fresno area ranks highest with 812 vehicle thefts per 100,000 people. eight of the nation's top 10 metropolitan areas are here in california. in the bay area, the vallejo fairfield area is highest on the list at number five and san francisco, oakland, freemont area ranks 9th. coming up on 5:00. and, sal, boy, you're covering a huge fire it looks like in san jose. how's that look? >> reporter: well, pam, this is a fraternity house near san

jose state. we found out it's kappa sigma which is on 168 south 11th. a rather large house, if you know that area. we know that there are no injuries so i guess all the fraternity members did get out, but the fire department has just called a fourth alarm here in san jose. this is, again, about a block away from campus at san jose state. so if you are going to the area, good idea to avoid 11th street. let's move along to the next picture. this would be the bay bridge toll plaza. that traffic is light. at 4:55, let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. we'll start off warm, fog is getting close, but it's not a factor this morning. 65 to 90 by noon. it won't take long for inland areas which are already in the mid-60s, will go 70 to 100 today. i do think they'll be a late breeze. the fog is getting close, it's trying, it's not that close, but it's getting close. it's coming up -- it's very, very shallow, it's coming up from monterey.

mountainview 68. moffett tends to run a little weird. 63 livermore, 57 in the city. i've seen anywhere from 53 to about 62. a southwest wind a little stronger than yesterday, west/northwest, not much, but high pressure is over us today. we're losing the north wind, picking up more of a westerly wind, but it won't kick in until later on, so really mild low. sunny, nice to hot, highs today 70 to 100. 100 out there. 88 vallejo. all bets off if the sea breeze kicks in later but history tells me it's about 1:00 or 2:00 and by then the highs have been set along the coast, not inland. there will be a big cooling trend. yay! yay! as we head to friday and saturday. >> i'm enjoying the heat. well, today is the first day of summer, so we expect some warm weather, right? well, the national park service is also celebrating by offering free admission to yosemite. the free admission offer is
