campus. >> reporter: five dogs and a cat, all dead within a 24-hour period in brentwood. we'll tell you why some neighbors are pointing the finger at one 6 their own neighbors. a grim discovery in san franciscoer. the marina green. we'll have -- in san francisco -- in san francisco near the marina green. well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori tori campbell. it's tuesday, june 21st. about 30 minutes ago, firefighters put out a large fire at a fraternity house. allie rasmus is live with more.

>> reporter: that fraternity house is on 11th street. right here behind me you can see some of the firefighters are packing up to clear the scene. later on, it will be the work of the investigators to go inside the building to figure out what exactly started this fire. now, firefighters started gaining control of this fire and within the last hour we've seen them shut the hoses off and get ready to pack up and leave. the building where this started, this fire started here at this house, just after 3:00 this morning. newschopper2 was overhead after the fire broke out. at 4:00 this morning, the firefighters called for aid. shortly after they arrived,

firefighter also to go outside the building and tackle it from the outside. as the fire spread through the building, it just became too dangerous to fight the fire from inside. the department gave us these pictures of what it looked like inside the burning building before they got out. the firefighter explained some of the challenges. after you hear from him, you 4 hear from the fraternity house's president. >> the fact that it started up kind of in the attic area -- atick area -- attic, it created difficulties. >> all i heard was screaming and you i to get out -- you have to get out. >> reporter: now, 28 frat tern city brothers were -- fraternity brothers were living

in the house. all got out safely. some of the fraternity brothers actually went onto the roof with some fire extinguishers and tried to put out the fire by itself. a firefighter suffered some burn injuries to his hand fighting the fire. he's expected fob to be -- he's expected to be okay. the fra terribility president said a lot of them will have places to go -- the fraternity president said a lost them -- a lot of them have places to go. a loot of the brothers say they aren't ready to leave yet. they are still trying to get a handle on this and deal with what happened. this is their home away from home, some of them. and they are obviously very upset about what happened. the initial reports may have

been it started in the atick or the vent. 7:03. a body has been found in the waters near san francisco. police are investigating finding the body near the marina green. there are early reports that a blood trail led officers to this body. again, this is breaking news, all coming in as we spoke. we have a news crew heading to the scene. they will have a live report as soon as possible. another overnight house fire sent one firefighter to the hospital with minor injuries. this happened just after 2:00 this morning on 23rd avenue near east 23rd street in oakland. this was a retrofitted vicker toian house. -- victorian house. this is the fire. it was going pretty good.

the crews contained the fire and now they are trying to figure out the exact cause. now, at least two families were affected by the fire. the red cross is helping them out. it is 7:04. a standoff in oakland apparently ended without incident this morning. s.w.a.t. teams were called to a home on chiro road, west of 880 shortly before 11:00 last night. police say a man inside the home showed off a gun and barricaded himself inside. neighbors were told to stay in their homes while police tried the negotiations. animal control officers in brentwood are investigating the death of at least a half-dozen

poisoned pets. it's a story you will see only here on channel 2. kraig debro has been talking to angry pet owners who say they know who is responsible. >> reporter: grooming, tori. -- good morning, tori. people are calling the death of five dogs and one cat scary. this house here and the one on the corner, suffered the same, the animals appear to have been poisoned in a 24-hour period. the pets play in yards that are separated by a fence. these chi wa caus died -- chihuahuas died. one of the dogs back actually poisoned before five years ago. the then-vet diagnosed the

problem as a rat poisoning. the one neighbor suspects that the neighbor took meat that was bad and cooked it up. >> it's kind of ironic that a person may have been responsible for taking a life. >> yeah. >> my dog and other dogs. >> these are tony's dog, daisy, happy and sin na mon. he -- cinnamon. we spoke with tony last night, he's actually holding daisy, one of the dogs that got sick and died. daisy was okay. we got here this morning around 4:15. they were just pulling up to the house. they had just been to the vet. they just learned that dayzy

had died and autopsy -- daisy had died. and autopsies will be conducted. we're gonna try to contact the person who neighbors suspect in this. back to you. >> thank you. 7:07. well, vallejo police are out there searching for two men involved in a day-time gate and bullets were flying into a transit bus. police say the men were standing on opposite sides of sonoma boulevard about 11:00 yesterday morning. the bus was hit as it was going west on georgia street. one of the bullets went through a left-side window and out the other side. there were passengers on board, along with the drive -- along with the bus driver. they were pretty shaken up. but fortunately nobody was hurt. thousands of pg&e customers have their electricity back this morning. the power was knocked out. it knocked out traffic lights right here around 3:30 in the

afternoon. overall, 4700 customers were affected by the power outage. pg&e told us overnight that 25 customers were still without power this morning. those customers should have the power back by 7:30. that's a little while longer. pg&e blames and equipment failure for the outage. the government is unavailabling new graphic warning labels for cigarette packs. this is an exam pell of one of those labels. coming up at 7:15, we'll show you the others in a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom. there is -- b.a.r.t.'s plan to extent late-night service could already be offtrack. the agency wants to extent friday service until 7:00 a.m. now "the coinicle" reports a just-released extension shows the change would have negative

to 100 degrees. 7:16. new this morning, just released may existing home sales reports, fewer people purchased previously occupied homes in may, bringing sales down to their lowest level of the year. the national association of real teres says home -- realtors says home sales of existing homes and condos sank 3.6% to 4.48 million homes. economists say that's far we lot 6 million homes sold in -- below the 6 million homes sold in a healthy market.

7:17. well, new this morning, the food and drug administration is unveiling a new set of nine very graphic warning labels that you will see prominently appearing on -- on all cigarette packages next year. alison burns has more. >> reporter: the goal seems to be to scare you or goes you out of smoking. these are the nine pictures selected by the federal government to appear. a man has a hole in his neck, a vivid message about cigarettes causing strokes and heart disease. the labels will be big enough to cover half of the pack. this is the most significant change of warning levels in the history of the united states. it will dramatically reduce the number of young people who stop smoking and encourage many to

quit. tobacco companies are fighting against them in court. alisonalison burns, cut kut. -- burns, ktvu channel 2 news. the senate is expected to confirm leon panetta. he's expected 20 jump right into the troop withdrawal in afghanistan. he says the decision ultimately rests with the president. here's currently the director of the cia. david petraeus has been nominated to replace panetta. a confirmation hearing is scheduled for thursday. happening right now, secretary of state, hillary clinton is teaming up with retiring defense secretary gates and the japanese prince

minister for a press conference in washington, d.c. these are some live pictures of the event. the three officials have been discussing the event, the air station. it was due to be completed in 2013. but there's been opposition on the island to. many people resent the presence of u.s. forces on the island. 7:20. right now, former utah governor jon huntsman -- there he is right now, hugging the little girl right there -- he's officially announcing he's running for president of the united states. you can see him in the background. there is the statue of liberty, he's standing on liberty state park, obviously with family and friends. huntsman is joining the candidates who want the nomination. he served as a u.s. ambassador to china for two years after

being appointed by president obama in 2009. he's making the announcement there at liberty state park in new jersey where, if you remember, ronald reagan announced he was running for president in 1980. again, you can see jon huntsman running for president. meantime, john mccain says he will not decide to run for president again in 2012. in an interview, mccain was asked if he might get into the race. senator mccain said he would not want to go through it again. as you recall, he lost to president obama in 2008. republican presidential candidate, mitt romney will be in the bay area. he will be on the peninsula today, scheduled to be at a barbecue of the home of scott mcneil. according to a memo, there is a suggested contribution of $1,000 to $10,000 per person foreign the romney event.

breaking news from san francisco. police officers found a body near the marina green. ktvu's jade hernandez just arrived there. we're hearing that they found a trail of blood. jade? >> reporter: dave, we jumped out of the truck about five minutes ago, police were pulling crime tape and zigzagging it across the street. we're just across the street from the safeway. you can see where walkers and joggers are being pulled away from the area. down there at fillmore you can see traffic being diverted from

7:30. we have breaking news from san francisco. police officers say a body has been found near the marina green. ktvu's jade hernandez just arrived there. what do you know? >> reporter: well, we're finding a little bit more information out just from police because the lieutenant, troy dangerfield, he's the spokesperson for the department. he arrived about five minutes ago. he's writing down as much information as he can and then he's going to update media but i can show you what police are doing right now. you can see a lot of confused drivers out in this area. we're at beach and bay, where it turns into marina boulevard. this entire area has been blocked off. as you can tell, police are making sure all of the joggers

and walkers in this area stay away. i want to swing around here. traffic is being diverted. i spoke to a man who said his son called 911 last night sometime after 10:00 because he had spot that trail of blood and -- that there were people in this area last night. so what we know right now is that san francisco police are investigating a body has been found and what -- the san francisco police tell us, they are gonna keep this area blocked off for now. i'm hoping that my photographer can kind of rip around here and show you. this is fort mason center. this is the parking lot. all of this has been blocked off with the zigzag of police yellow crime tape here. we checked down in the marina, there was a concentration of police officers down there just a few minutes ago. i think that they are interviewing a lot of people in and around this area.

[ horns honking ] >> the cabdrivers are planning to gather at city hall between noon and 2:00 and lean on their horns. they did the same thing last month. they said they are angry about the 5% charges they have to pay when passengers use credit card. the municipal transportation agency is scheduled to meet at city haul this -- city hall this afternoon to discuss a meter rate increase and taxi expansion. gunfire was reported around 8:30 last night at 32nd and market. police did not find any victims there. but now people showed up at

local hospitals with gunshot wounds. one of them died. another is pregnant. bullets grazed her head and back. so far no arrests have been made. police say a man was shot around noon yesterday while driving on bancroft, also in oakland. the wounded individual's car slammed into several cars a few blocks away that were parked. he was then taken to highland hospital where he later died. federal authorities are searching for a vallejo man who is allegedly part of a nationwide drug smuggling ring centered in solano county. 17 people were arrested last week but police are still searching for 39-year-old marvin powers, junior. prosecutors say that drug ring recruited a wide variety of marijuana dealers including college athletes who targeted fellow students on campus.

an unidentified man was trying to pop the hood on his car yesterday afternoon on gentry drive. mistakenly, he released the emergency blake. the park was in neutral. it was parked at an incline. so it started littling backwards. when the -- rolling back wards. when the man started to lift the car, he was run over. he was taken to the hospital and he died. there's a new hearing scheduled for those three americans in iraq accused of spying. they said they were notified the hearing will be july 21st. a meeting scheduled 234 may was cancelled by the iraqis. the former students deny being spies. now the two men are still in custody. sarah shourd was released last

year on bail. she's refusing to go back to that trial. pg&e is being fined 26 million for a deadly national gas explosion near sacramento in 2008. it happened on december 24th and killed a 72-year-old man in rancho cordova. the california public utilities commission says pg&e admitted it violated safety laws in connection with the explosions. the violations include installing a gasoline pipe the fines still require final approval of the collisioners of the cup. back in march workers sorted through documents of the cow palace. but an independent panel has requested whetherring are laters have the manpower to read through all it is

of buying back the $600 billion in the treasuryies. today the national labor relations board is about to announce major changes in rules. they say the changes would speed up elections and make it easier to organize new members. most elections take place within two months of the time the union has enough signatures on a petition. the new plan would shorten that. business groups and republicans are expected to oppose the changes. and blackberry research and motion is starting to pass out layoff notices. the notices are reportedly going out in the ontario area, where rim headquarters is located. thed stock is down more than 50% this year due to increased competition and lower sales of phones and tablets.

welcome back. 7:52. now we're getting more information about that fiery crash that killed mtv star ryan dunn. dunn and his 30-year-old passenger, zachary heartwell, were killed yesterday early in the morning in a car crash in pennsylvania. now, heartwell is the man on the right. dunn showed 24 picture, showing him drinking on twitter just hours before the deadly crash. now, authorities have not said whether or not alcohol was involved but robert ebert is being tracked -- attacked for a tweet "friends don't let

ktvu's jade hernandez still butting together all of the time -- pulling together all of the information. she's back here live. >> reporter: dave, the details are starting to fall together. we spoke to a man who said his 20-year-old son called 911 around 10:00, 10:3030 because he found a trail of blood leading from that post office all the way across bay boulevard near beech. the young -- near beach. now, he followed that trail but couldn't find anything. he waited as long as he could and the officers did not show up. we now know the officers did come to the area and they also couldn't find anything, so they calmed off the search. as for the young man, he was shaken up and immediately told his father what he had seen. what we've learned from the police is the story picks up. >> around 6:30, 6:00.

they got a call saying a body was found at the enof buchanan street -- at the end of buchanan street. it's a male. don't have the age on the male. it's a blood trail that led from the 3600 block of here, buchanan, all the way to the water. >> reporter: now, that's lieutenant troy dangerfield you just heard from. he says the body has not been moved or been identified other than as a young man. we're showing you traffic on marina boulevard. police tell us that this body had not been in the water for an extended period of time but this investigation is still going. we've been told that joggers, walkers, drivers, everyone will be kept from this area. this investigation will continue for as long as it needs to. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news.

two minutes after 8:00. animal control officers in brentwood are investigating the deaths of at least a half-dozen poisoned pets. kraig debro talked to one pet owner who underwent a real tragic ordeal overnight. >> reporter: good morning. it seems like we have a lot of developments to talk about. the latest one is we just swung around to one of the pet owners and they told bus a discovery they made. five dogs and a cat, the fifth dog died overnight. would take a look at this video -- take a look at this video. here's what the neighborhood found -- they've been accusing the neighbor of being behind the poisoned pets.

this looks like remnants of food lest out for a pet, a cat food can. and then there's antifreeze. the pets have been being poisoned by antifreeze. according 20 one of the people, one of the pet owners, they questioned why all of those things were in this person's yard. >> we found a couple of cans of cat food hidden in his yard. it's kind of like out of the way so you can't really see it. there is also a bottle of antifreeze. they are not sure if that is exactly what it is. it could be dray know. -- draino. he doesn't have any animals.

all of this happened within the past 24 hours. in one case one of the pet owners, one of the dogs who died yesterday, his animal was poisoned by rat poison. we haven't spoken to the police or animal control or the person being -- being accused. members after fraternity house near san jose state university trying to salvage whatever they can after a five- alarm fire this morning. allie rasmus is back now to tell us where the cleanup. how that is all going? >> reporter: we've seen some of the fraternity members go inside to discover some of

their stuff. the latest estimate damage, $1.7 million. the roof up here, completely destroyeded. you can see some of the trees through the roof there. there is also a lot of water damage to the second floor. the initial reports are that this fire may have started in a laundry room. we watched some of the fraternity members go in. they were escorted by firefighters. they were let in to recover some of their belongings. as one member explained to me, there are deck eights of history in this building -- degree eights of history in in build -- decades of history in in building. their fire started just after 3:00 in the morning. newschopper2 was overhead. at one point, this was a five- alarm fire.

earlier firefighters said it was four alarms. 75 firefighters were tackling the blaze. all frat brothers who were here, they all got out safely. no one was injured. now that the fire is out, firefighters are helping them save what is left of their fraternity house. the 28 fra terribility members linning here -- fraternity members living here cannot go back. we're told they've made arrangements elsewhere. now, in terms of long-term housing, i spoke with the san jose state university spokeswoman who is out here and sheep says the university is working on getting long-term

8:29. we have an update of a developing story. this one we've been following almost two hours now. part of san francisco's marina district surrounded with police crime tape after a body was found near the marina green. ktvu's jade hernandez is back now and she has new information. so what do you know now, jade? >> well, there is a concentration of san francisco police officers right here at the end of buchanan. that's where someone discovered a body in the water this morning. we're live at the fort mason center parking lot and i want you to take a look at newschopper 2 over the marina green this morning, we understand that that body is still in the water at this hour. and that the spokesperson of the police department says it doesn't appear that the body has been there for an extended period time -- period of time. i want you to take a look at the trail of blood that was found just 30 minutes ago.

showed up. the police arrested one person. this morning oakland police are searching for suspects in two homicides. no arrests have been made so far. around noontime, yesterday, police say a man was shot as he was driving on bancroft between 72nd and 73rd avenues in oakland. the wounded man's car crashed into several cars a couple of blocks away. witnesses took him to the eastmont police station and then he was taken to highland hospital but that's where he died. san francisco police are trying to figure out who kidnapped a woman from louisiana is and drove her all the way to the city.
