from afghanistan. it came during a address that wrapped up within the hour. starting next month the u.s. will remove 10,000 troops. 33,000 forces will be home by next summer. the president sited sited the death of osama bin laden as a turning point. at least 1500 u.s. troops died and 12,000 have been wounded in the effort in afghanistan. president obama is under pressure to end the conflict and military families we talked with had mixed feelings. some say the u.s. should refocus rebuilding the economy but one father questioned the timing of the announcement. >> i guess the question is, why

japan in the same area where the earthquake and tsunami and hit. it the warning center said it did not expect a tsunami. so far there are no reports of damage or injuries. jury began deliberations in the trial of two women accused of killing a great grandmother. her body was found stuffed into a garbage can. the killing stemmed from a custody dispute over the daughter of the victim's grandson. the wife and her mother face life sentences if convicted. divers took to the water in san francisco to try to uncover new evidence in the deaths of a man. his body was pulled yesterday.

ktvu's david stevenson has new information on what brought the victim, dennis knowlton to san francisco. >> reporter: the homicide in this district shocked this neighborhood and stunned the friends of the victims. >> i was shocked. the former girlfriend of dennis knowlton. >> hearing from him the day before through facebook, it was just -- that he was going to call me. we spoke a few times and -- it was shocking. >> reporter: the man was stabbed and killed monday night in san francisco marina's district. his body was pulled tuesday morning. he was a talented singer who moved to san francisco last year. >> get away from here, things like that. try something new. >> he moved to san francisco

bryan stow sustained a traumatic brain injury. >> reporter: today's advances in medicine made that possible but doctors warn it does not mean he will make a full recovery. the family issued a statement saying we are grateful for the public's concern and support. we are encouraged by his improvement. investigators' prime suspect, giovanni ramirez who was given 10 months in prison after his parole was revoked for gun possession. he hasn't been charged with stow's beating. they will replace the section of skull they had to remove to accom date brain swelling. ktvu channel 2 news.

ktvu's ken pritchett is live in sacramento county. >> if you look behind me, you can see a rescue team underneath this bridge as part of a training exercise but they are also here because they want to be in place incase of rescue. they had 20 rescues today, 50 in the past week and 8 people were from the bay area. >> reporter: one answer to that would be the level of the american river. >> we have flows that are twice what they normally are. >> plenty are hitting the water to cool off and the water is cold, 45 degrees. 18 water rescues just yesterday. >> between the swift water, cold water and the lack of awareness people have, we are having serious problems. >> reporter: fire crews are training on the american river today so they can be on hand if more rescues are needed. a strategy that paid off with a
