a little cooler today, steve. that's correct, pam. especially if you're inland areas that were 90s and 1:00 hass two days ago a loot of low to mid-80s. by the coast 50s, 60s and 70s around the bay. fog has been chewed up a little on the marin and sonoma coast. it's solid. it's going to hold temperatures there in check. good morning. traffic is moving along pretty well on the san mateo bridge getting out to the high-rise with no major problems. also this morning we're looking at the commute on the east shore freeway and that is getting busier. now let's go back to the desk. four former bay area police officers head to court today in connection with the corruption case. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us from outside the walnut creek courthouse to talk about what's happening today. jade. >> reporter: well, in a few hours right here at the contra costa county superior court these four men will step in front of a judge. prosecutors say they have evidence detailing a scandal showing belate event disregard of the law these men said they represented.

four men have been implicated including one man who used to head the drug enforcement team. the men will appear before a judge later this morning. three worked for law enforcement agencies while the other was a private investigator. the men are expected to appear at the court around 8:30 this morning. federal authorities have already taken over this case. the state case covers a 38 count felony complaint which alleges conspiracy, illegal weapons, criminal threats, dui set ups, bribery and other crimes. other alleged illegal activity these men are accused of being a part of, a marijuana grow operation and prostitution. now the district attorney says charges stand as they are but could be trumped later by any federal charges brought against the men after the federal investigation is complete. now the attorney representing a former head of the county's

narcotics enforcement will speak to us during mornings on 2. we'll bring that to you. we're live in walnut creek. we'll give you the latest later on. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. another crucial hearing in the barry bonds case is scheduled to begin in just a few hours. federal prosecutors are due in a san francisco courtroom to discuss whether to schedule another perjury trial. now in april a jury deadlocked on three counts charging that bonds lied to a grand jury about his alleged steroid use but convicted bonds of obstruction of justice. the defense hopes to throw out that lone conviction. today's hearing follows a court battle on whether or not to delay the case. our time now 6:03. well, at least 20 bay area robberies and ten cities are tied to one person a little to the authorities. ktvu's kraig debro joining us live now with more on the man police are searching for. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. police say that one man's responsible for robbing a number of large stores.

i just got off the phone with daly city police. daly city was listed that a store was hit by the same guy. we're just learning however in daly city it may not have been a bev mo because they don't have one. this store we're pretty sure was hit by the same robber. during a robbery here on may 1st the published report says the manmade the manager open a safe and took cash registers for all they had. report says there was a customer in the store apparently didn't know what was happening. san jose police produced this sketch of the suspect. now during the robbery at the men lo park store which is is just north of the stanford shopping center the man wore a black beanny and black mask covering his face and mouth. police say he's about 30 something 5'9" weighs 200 pounds described as a black man. take a look at all the cities he has robbed a store in. san francisco, san jose, san lee andre, fremont, pacifica,

san bruno, redwood city. i just talked to the daly city police and they told me they don't have a bev mo but they have a party city. they say that the man robbed the party city and not the bev mo because they don't have one. in the process of calling all the other police departments to confirm what robberies if any happened there that are connected with the suspect. live in men lo park, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. happening now the casey anthony murder trial continues this morning in orlando, florida. the defense has just called its first witness of the day. now yesterday a lawyer for her parents made a bomb shell statement saying they do not believe that their daughter is innocent. casey anthony is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, caylee. time now 6:05. today a bill will be introduced in congress that would in essence end the federal government's ban on marijuana. coming up at 6:15 we'll have a live report from our washington d.c. newsroom with what this

new bill would allow states to do. this morning members of congress including members of california will call on president obama to bring u.s. troops home from afghanistan at an even faster pace than announced last night. >> starting next month we will be able to remove 10,000 of our troops from afghanistan by the end of this year. >> president obama says by the end of next year a total of 33,000 troops will be pulled from afghanistan. that would leave about 70,000. but some americans say they're tired of war and u.s. should not be spending money in other countries. >> we need the money here in our country. bottom line. we need the money. >> in afghanistan today president hamid karzai responded to president obama's troop reduction announcement. president karzai thanked international troops for their support and says the people of afghanistan will take over the defense of their country as foreign troops leave. now in case you missed it or

you want to watch it again, ktvu.com has posted president obama's address in its entirety. just look for the video player on the right hand side of our front page. time now 6:06. the bay area minister who predicted the world would end on may 21st is going off the air. reverend harold camping owns the oakland based christian radio station family radio. but at the end of the month that station will replace his weekday radio segment with some new programming. now on june 9 reverend camping suffered a stroke and he will not be able to continue his radio show. we now know the cause of monday's fire at a sunny vale apartment complex that left 40 people homeless. investigators say it was started accidentally by a resident who fell asleep while preparing a meal. that man suffered some burns to his hands and face. the fire also caused $80,000 worth of damage to the building. time now 6:07. the chp searching now for the hit-and-run driver who caused a major traffic back up on

interstate 880. it happened just before 8:00 yesterday morning on southbound 880 near tennison road. a motorcyclist told police he was cut off by a white dodge neon that caused him to crash. and shortly after that three cars collided on southbound 880 near the 238 interchange. luckily no one was seriously hurt in either crash. ace train funding causing controversy among the alameda county transportation commission. each day the train carries about 2500 passengers when the central valley and bay area. now the train wants $90 million for improvement projects. one ac transit board member says that's too much money considering the low number of passengers. but supporters say voters have already approved that plan. the commission will vote on the funding tonight. time now 6:08. where are the potholes? an annual pothole report tells us the best and worst roads to drive on in the bay area. streets in brentwood, dublin have the least cracks and

potholes. while roads in east palo alto, oakland and mill brae have the most. san francisco and san jose fall somewhere in the middle. the metropolitan transportation commission says it would take the equivalent of a 20-cent per gallon gasoline tax to make sure all of the bay area roads are in good condition. 6:08 is the time right now. back over to sal to look at traffic. how's the commute, sal? doing pretty well, pam and dave. so far anyway. the commute is moving along nicely if you are driving on highway 4 westbound. it's getting a little bit busy coming up over the willow pass grade though. this morning's commute is going to be okay at the bay bridge toll plaza. it looks good on the upper deck of the bay bridge. if you are driving into san francisco looks good. san mateo and dumbarton traffic moving nicely. and the traffic on hayward's commute looks good. livermore and castro valley also san ramon traffic off to a nice start. steve. sal? >> the cal bears in the college world series play again today at 4:00 p.m.

breeze. today 55. san jose says i'm cooler than that at 55. southwest 13 at the napa airport and west-southwest 23 gusting to 30 at travis and southwest at vacaville. if vacaville gets a southwest wind even they'll be cooler and even sacramento will be cooler. and northwest wind livermore and a bit of a northwest at san jose. there's the system low spinning into portland and seattle and associated weak front dragging across northern california. that just means the cooling off continues. the coast some fog mainly south of the golden gate marin coast north looks to be okay south of that it's solid. morning fog then breezy. 60s, 70s around the bay. sunny, breezy low to mid-80s inland. low clouds sunny breezy to windy at times. cooling continues away from the coast. mild to warm the toughest forecasted highs santa rosa, morgan hill and gill roy. santa rosa 78. i did see low 8 0z.

well, good morning to you. welcome back. time now 6:15. there's a new marijuana bill before congress. for the first time lawmakers are trying to remove all federal restrictions on pot. ktvu's allison burns live in our washington d.c. newsroom with this bill that's being introduced today. allison. >> reporter: dave, that's right. it's our first of a kind bill being introduced in congress today. and it would end all those federal raids on marijuana providers in california and across the country. under the bill federal drug enforcement agents would no longer be involved in cracking down on marijuana manufacturing

and use. states would make their own laws and enforce them. republican presidential candidate congressman ron paul, oakland congresswoman barbara lee and several other democrats are introducing the bill. they say america's war on drugs is a failure and there are too many conflicts between state and federal laws. the legislation faces an uphill battle here on capitol hill. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. sarah palin is disputing reports that she has canceled her bus tour of historic american sites. in a facebook posting palin says she had to take a break from the tour because she's been called for jury duty. but the tour will resume when the time comes. palin traveled from washington d.c. to new england by bus in may which led to speculation she was planning to run for president in 2012. time now 6:16. a bomb shell confession from a prize winning journalist who grew up here in the bay area just announced he's an illegal immigrant in part in an effort to get congress to pass the

dream act. 34-year-old jose antonio vargas wrote a first person account in the new york times. his mother sent him from the philippines to mountain view when he was 12 years old. four years later found out his green card was fake after applying for a driver permit. he graduated at san francisco state, interned at the san francisco chronicle and won a prize for his coverage of the virginia tech massacre. moammar gadafi calling on the united nations to investigate a libyan attack that the nato government says killed 15 civilians. this aired on tv late last night over his speech. he calls nato "infidels without any conscious." nato says the target of the attack was a military communications building and that the organization goes to great lects to avoid civilian

casualties. 6:17. southwest airlines pilot suspended without pay after his profanity laced rant was heard over an open microphone. other flight crews and controllers clearly heard what he said as that pilot flew from texas to san diego last march. you can hear the pilot lashing out at gays, females and overweight flight attendants. >> chicago crews 11 out of 12, there's 12 flight attendants, individuals, never the same flight attendant twice, 11. nine barns and the track chapel are badly damaged after a storm swept through louisville, kentucky. the national weather service can't say yet if a tornado was part of the storm, but players in a poker tournament nearby say they saw the tornadoes start. time now 6:18. san francisco firefighters are supposed to get a pay raise july 1 #s and they haven't agreed to give it up as yet. san francisco officials say if they don't, neighborhood fire stations may lose service. last april the city targeted four engine companies that would not be used if firefighters did not accept pay cuts. the city's budget committee is still looking for ways to cut costs. all right. let's check back in with sal. it is 6:19. what's going on, sal? well, pam and dave, right now traffic is getting busier in some areas for example san mateo bridge not stop and go but we have more cars certainly also on the dumbarton bridge as the commute gets into what we're calling the peak between 6:30 and 7:30 or so. you can see the bay bridge

metering lights have been turned on and now a back upmostly right now in the fast track lanes but also in some of the cash lanes as well. and if you're driving in castro valley or livermore, traffic is okay. if you're driving hayward, union city and fremont that traffic is going to be light so far. yesterday was so terrible i think a lot of people are just you know waiting to see what's going to happen. right now it's okay so far. right now let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. low clouds, fog, breaks in the clouds but cooler and breezy today even with the sunshine. and, well, pretty good sea breeze out towards the delta making it all the way out towards the sacramento valley and some fog wants to hold on but not north of that. so it will be sunny but windy at times. 50s on the temps. out of those 60s we had a lot of mid and upper 60s couple days ago. that's not the case anymore. no doubt about it fairfield and vacaville with the southwest wind gusts to 30 at travis. that's a sure sign even inland areas will cool down.

another system moves into the pacific northwest and bumps the high into the rockies. fog mainly south. there will be breaks in it but 50s, 60s, 70s coast and bay. instead of upper 90s or 100s low to mid-80s inland. one more day of cooling and hang out before the weekend with 60s on the coast, 7s and 80s inland. slightly warmer on monday. this morning toyota says it can't confirm how many prius it will send to the u.s. dealers. yesterday the company sent out a news release saying it would ship 75,000 by the end of the year. that would be twice as many as announced earlier. then they backtracked saying that number was not accurate. prius is made only in japan and in short supply after the earthquake and tsunami. the twins now say they will accept a court settlement that was worth $65 million when they agreed to it three years ago.

they say zuckerberg stole their idea that became facebook. the value of the company has increased in the meantime. the settlement is now worth $200 million. time now 6:21. apple will reportedly introduce a new and faster iphone in september. that's according to two separate reports. both reports say the iphone 5 will have a more advanced camera and a stronger chip for processing data. apple has trailed google in a smart phone market. this new phone reportedly may help apple cut into the share of the android based phones that are sold. well, it is the world's oldest profession, but personal message oakland residents are now sending to men for soliciting women on international boulevard. and the toxicology report on the mtv star killed in a horrifying crash and which group is planning to protest its funeral. good morning. westbound 92 traffic looks pretty good getting out to the

san francisco. well, a huge factory fire in georgia is finally out. take a look at when it started on tuesday. that massive fire could be seen for miles away. there was also concern about air quality. so people were told to stay indoors. firefighters were originally going to just let that fire burn itself out. but they did manage to extinguish that using foam. mtv star ryan dunn had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit when he crashed his car. that's according to toxicology reports. dunn and a passenger were killed in monday's fiery crash in pennsylvania. police say he was driving as fast as 140 miles an hour. hours before the crash dunn tweeted a photo from a bar of him, his passenger and another man drinking. friends and family of ryan dunn gathered for a private memorial in west chester, pennsylvania, yesterday. a public funeral planned late

they are week. the controversial westboro baptist church announced it will protest any public memorial for dub. westboro protesters have also picketed outside military funerals claiming the deaths are god's punishment for the nation's acceptance of homosexuality. time now 6:26. some residents in oakland fed up with prostitution. now they're targeting the men who keep the prostitutes in business. yesterday afternoon our cameras caught a handful of women walking and you happen down international boulevard. it's a site a neighborhood youth group wants to stop. they say if it wasn't for their customers there wouldn't be any prostitute business. so they're writing dear john letters to anyone seen accompanying those prostitutes. >> the letter will not make any accusations or indicate there was any criminal activity but say this car was seen in an area where there's a lot of prostitution activity. >> now businesses and neighbors will be watching out for

prostitution. then they'll take note of the john's license plates, send it to the youth center. they will then pass it on to the police who will put that letter in the mail. the now facing dozens of felony charges. four former police officers accused in a major police construction scandal are due in court in just a few hours. >> reporter: more criticism this morning about the handling of the shooting of oscar grant. but this time that criticism is focused on the paramedics by one of their own. and stocks are headed lower this morning. we take you live to new york next to find out why.

lawsuit wasn't actually here, he did not handle this call but he claims he called for an investigation into that call and says he's been retaliated against ever since. we want to show you video of the scene back in 2009. he claims his colleagues seen in this exclusive ktvu video did not treat oscar grant properly after he'd been shot. his lawyer claims there was collusion in the grant case of fire trying to cover up for police. however he admits in his youtube video posted eleven days ago he doesn't know how many paramedics were on scene or how long it took for grant to get care. >> in order to know facts like that, you would have to do an investigation. and you would have to probably do one far beyond my level where you know where you would get the report from the coroner's office. dr. michaels is a surgeon, he's maybe qualified to look at you know all the documents once they're put together and shed

some light on it. >> reporter: according to his lawyer who was also interviewed in that youtube video, no one has been interested in investigating this case further despite repeated requests. we should note in testimony during the mesherle trial there was no indication that anything else could have been done by paramedics to save grant. and in this lawsuit as well as in the complaint filed with the department of employees housing the grant case is a long part of a long list of other allegations and claims. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. today four former contra costa law enforcement officers are set to appear before a judge in walnut creek. that's where ktvu's jade hernandez joins us now from outside the courthouse where the corruption case will begin in just a couple hours. jade. >> reporter: that's right. in an hour we're going to hear from an attorney representing one of the men in these cases. all four men former law enforcement officers with contra costa county. they face very serious charges this morning. and today the men are expected in front of a judge right here

and prostitution. as i mentioned earlier the attorney representing the former head of the county's narcotics enforcement or cnet will be one of those lawyers speaking with us during mornings on 2. live in walnut creek. we'll have the latest when court gets underway in just two hours. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. time is now 6:34. san francisco police still searching for suspects in a homicide just daysing a along the marina. yesterday divers went in searching for evidence in the stabbing death of 20-year-old dennis nolton of washington state. his body was found floating in the water tuesday morning. police suspect that killing was an isolated incident. a vigil was held just last night by his former high school classmates in their hometown in washington. they were in complete shock when they heard the news. his former girlfriend says he came to san francisco last year looking for a fresh start and attending community college. injured giants fan bryan

stow is making some progress in his recovery. >> he's began to spontaneously open his eyes. he's started to have some movement of his left arm. and he has intermittently and focus on the intermittently been able to follow some simple commands. >> doctors at san francisco general hospital have upgraded stow's condition from critical to serious. but they say he is still not out of the woods yet. stow suffered severe head trauma when he was beaten outside dodgers stadium in march. in a few months surgeons plan to replace the section of his skull that they had to remove in order to accommodate brain swelling. time now 6:36. the alameda fire department's water rescue training program is back on this morning after that now infamous drowning incident. it's been three weeks since witnesses say alameda firefighters stood on the beach and watched a suicidal man drown in the bay. the department has reinstated the training program and

firefighters can now perform water rescues. now just this past sunday three firefighters helped out in the rescue of a stranded boater and his three children after their boat capsized. reaction is coming in to president obama's announcement that he will begin withdrawing u.s. troops from afghanistan. coming up at 6:45 we will hear from members of congress who want the troops out even faster than the president's plan and from those who worry that withdrawing any troops could negatively impact the military mission there. time now 6:37. a marine reservist has been connected to the shootings of several military buildings in the nation's capitol last year. he was arrested last friday. he was spotted in arlington national cemetery in the early mornings hours when the cemetery was closed. and he had a backpack he said was full of explosives. that turned out to be not true. but police found evidence tieing him to shots fired last year at military buildings in

northern virginia. a marine recruiting center, marine corp museum and the pentagon itself. no one was hurt in the gunfire. the f.b.i. said they suspected the shooter had some kind of gripe against the marines. the department of veteran affairs is now looking into the death of an iraq war veteran from modesto. now the agency opened an investigation after a newspaper reported that 26-year-old william hamilton was turned away from the v.a. hospital in palo alto in may of 2010. three days later he stepped in front of a train. hamilton suffered from disturbing visions. records reportedly showed he was turned away from the v.a. in palo alto because it was late in the day. all right. time now 6:38. let's see what's happening on the roads now. you're looking at the south bay. that's right. we're starting there this morning because the commute is becoming heavy all over the place. right now on the south bay here on 280 it's not so much which is good. you might want to jump ahead of

the crowd for your trip into the west valley 17 and 85. still not doing well. in fact i want to show you the map here. you can see the road sensor which is are green for the most part show the roads doing very nicely just a little bit of slowing as you can see on 101 near 880 and on 280 near 880. let me move this up here. the traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza is backed up. it's backed up for about a 20 minute delay. so, again, another bad day for the bay bridge. just getting back to the peninsula you can see if you're wondering about 101 or 280 that's also doing very nicely. and this morning if you are driving across the san mateo or dumbarton bridge that traffic looks good. 6:39 let's go to steve. thank you, sal. some sun there. low clouds. little chewed up especially on the marin and sonoma coast. but around the bay and san mateo coastline little thicker. cooling continues for those who work outside sometimes i throw this out there.

good morning to you. welcome back. time now 644:67:89 here's a quick look at some of the top stories we're following right now. there's a new lawsuit tied to the fatal shooting of bart passenger oscar grant. oakland fire department employee claims his colleagues did not give grant the proper medical treatment after he was shot on the bart platform. the oakland fire department says that employee was not even there at the 2nd base of the shooting and they say his lawsuit has no merit. today's arraignment day in the east bay police corruption scandal. four former law enforcement officers will be facing dozens of felony charges when they appear in court at 8:30 this morning. also today legislation is being introduced in congress that would lift all federal restrictions on marijuana. under this new rule each state

would be free to make its own marijuana policy and they would be solely responsible for enforcing it. the search is on for a serial robber police say is armed and dangerous. ktvu channel reporter kraig debro joins us now with the bay area cities that have already been hit. kraig. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, pam. this bev mo in men lo park is according to a published report one of the stores this man robbed. the same man san jose police believe is the same man according to this report the manmade the manager open the safe and then took cash from four registers. all this the report says as a customer inside the store apparently didn't even know what was happening. san jose police have produced this sketch of a suspect. this suspect san jose police say is wanted in robberies of 20 stores in different bay area cities. during the robbery of the men lo park store north of the stanford shopping center the man wore a black mask covering

his face and mouth. 5'9" weighs about 200 pounds black man. look at all the cities. these are the cities the police say same man has robbed a store in. san francisco, san jose, fremont, pacifica, san bruno, daly city. all those cities we're working on contacting police about what kind of stores these were. early on we were going on the impression that bev mo stores have been involved in a lot of these robberies still have confirmed that. we have confirmed all the cities you just saw do have bev mo's with the exception of pacifica and daly city. they do not have those stores. i got a call into san jose police to try to find out what stores exactly were hit and also try to find out how they link this particular suspect to all these robberies. reporting live on the peninsula, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:47. a mob boss who was just captured in southern california is due in federal court today.

81-year-old james whitety bulger was arrested here in santa barbara yesterday evening. he was among the f.b.i.'s ten most wanted and has been on the run for 16 years. he was the head of a notorious boston gang and was wanted for 19 murders. he was also the inspiration for the 2006 movie the departed. president obama announced last night that 10,000 american troops in afghanistan will come home by the end of this year. >> after this initial reduction, our troops will continue coming home at a steady pace. as afghan security forces move into the lead. >> now president obama says by the end of next year 33,000 troops will be have been pulled out of afghanistan. his plan is getting mixed reactions on capitol hill. >> here we are making the sacrifices, the human sacrifices, that we have made with the financial sacrifices. i've just said enough is enough. after ten years how long will it take and how long should we be there. >> we have an awful lot invested here.

into monday. thank you, steve. there is new evidence that the job market is weakening. this morning the labor department announced 429,000 people filed for first time unemployment benefits last week. that's 9,000 more than the week before and higher than analysts expected. on the news the dow jones shot right down more than 1% taking a live look right now you can see it's down 1.5%. 190 points. back below 12,000. 11,922. certainly re-emphasizing what ben bernanke, the fed chief, was talking about yesterday that the economy's growth has slowed down a bit. will remain sluggish through next year. and this new jobs report certainly indicating that the job market is weak. so live look dow jones down 180 points. harry potter author just announced an online video game that features the wizard. it is called potter more. it will be free to use. she also announced that the

welcome back. time now 6:55. good samaritan's heroic action almost got him killed. witnesses say he pulled a gun on a man he saw attacking a woman in downtown san mateo this week. the police officers almost shot the good samaritan in all the confusion but then figured out what was happening. the good samaritan was released. they took the assault suspect into custody. no one was hurt. the district attorney is investigating. oakland's oracle arena will soon get an upgrade. the city of oakland and alameda county have given final approval to a settlement tied to a five year dispute. the deal calls for major improvements to the arena's sound system and also provides $4 million to improve the so- called fan experience at warrior games.
