opportunities to young men and young women, instead what's happening is they're getting pushed into prison. south san jose's police department is getting help from the feds in fighting gang violence. the police chief announced that two members will join the department's gang task force. the members will come from the immigration task force. but they insist that they will focus on gang injunction. the plan is part of a 6-year- old campaign called operation community shield. a budget show down is under way in downtown san jose at state jobs, pension reform and the possibility of a physical state of emergency. this meeting called -- fiscal state of emergency. this meeting was important enough that people camped out

that's been postponed. the next they can take up the issue will be in august. the san jose police union says any where from 70 to 100 officers will lose their jobs next friday. the first day of the new fiscal year. one san jose city councilman issued a plan to save those jobs. one move in election is approved for november. >> unless we have the election in june, consolidate it with the primary, that will save us $2 million. we can use those $2 million to keep people from getting laid off next week. >> if voters approve changes, it will allow the city to make more cuts to workers pensions. a man from the san jose area was killed while in

afghanistan. the defense attorney says singai was killed during during -- at issue here is a 1998 gas leak along the very same pipeline a few miles from last year's san bruno gas fire. but in a filing this week, the utility says a worker recalls the old leak being from a weld around the pipe. federal investigators believe the deadly september blast originated on a faulty well. and google is facing a lawsuit. the company is under similar investigations by the european

a couple of days ago. temperatures have really come down. we're down 20 degrees. 25degrees from those numbers today and yesterday. the cool, the mayor cooling is done. subtle cooling the next few days. a degree here, a degree there but not a lot. overnight lows are in the 40s and 50s. fog shows it in here all the way across the bay. that's a possibility. there was fog across the bay over in moroga and oakland hills. it's a fragile bank. it'll go away rapidly. i think we'll see plenty of clearing out in steinson beach and pacifica. the fog will be right along the avenues of san francisco. listen, there's a lot of stuff going on this bay area weekend. one of the biggest events in the bay area all year. the nascar racing out there at sonoma or out at sears point. you can see here we have the forecast for the event. if you're going out there saturday and sunday, temperatures on saturday, 60 at lunchtime. sun comes out. it's going to feel warm and

limit president bush's authorities. the associated press gak poll found that 58% of voters are satisfied with the slate of declared candidates so far. former massachusetts representative mitt romney tops the rankings. tea party favorite michelle bachmann was second. to pawlenty and newt gingrich both received 41%. the board of supervisors today adopted the $2.5 billion budget for fiscal year 2011- 2011. the budget closes a nearly $140 million deficit. thanks in part to wage and benefit concessions from county workers. the plan eliminates 110 positions many of which are vacant. there is no word just yet on whether any employees will be laid off. but the county is working to find jobs for those who are

an incredible site. california condor spotted right here in the bay area. it is something that has not happened for a century. a milestone in the recovery of the endangered california condor. a flock of them spotted lingering for the first time in the bay area. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler live on mount hamilton on why it is a double edge sword. john-- >> reporter: we're 4,200 feet up mount hamilton. about 50 miles from the condor nest south of salinas. and here for the first time in living memory, a flock of condors has stayed in the bay

area overnight. new pictures you will only see on channel 2. critically endangered 10-foot wingspan california condors in the bay area. >> to see them so far outside of the area where they normally range. was just a real special treat. >> reporter: astronomer and amateur bird watcher elenore gates watched and photographed them for half an hour. >> they were pulling on all the ropes and cables and playing. seemed like they were playing with things and really inquisitive birds. >> reporter: these are five of only 108 in the wild. >> i don't think i'll ever have such a privilege again unless they move into the area. >> reporter: we're just 10 miles east of san jose. >> the birds are obviously finding the area appealing up there. >> reporter: burnett tracks condors by radio. some flew from livermore two years ago but didn't stay. tuesday they lingered in the bay area for the first time in a century. >> that's the double edge here.

labor day. the higher prices are to pay for higher prices for arum numb, plastic and oil for shipment. and a new diet study says while a potato chip is seen as a quick snack, it is contributing to america's weight gain more than soda, candy and even ice cream. part of the reason is that the old advertising cliche, you can't eat just one. another new study is raising concern tonight over a hospital patient who suffer cardiac arrests. researchers in the university of pennsylvania say 200,000 people are treated for cardiac arrest in the u.s. each year. they also say many of them could have been prevented with better monitoring. the study's authors say their numbers should help improve

federal investigators are looking into a plane crash last night near the palo alto

there's a really full of action spy entrance. park police released a sketch based on a woman jogger's description of a man she says attacked her with a box cutter last week. the woman said the attacker was a white man about 6'2", 20 30 years old, with a fair complex and short hair. she was jogging when the man came out of the bushes and swiped at her with a box cutter. he cut her on the forearm and she ran away. the woman received stitches to close that cut. and we were told at the beginning at the newscast, two people have died after an amtrak train collided with a big rig outside of reno. we're live at the station where the surviving passengers will arrive tonight. we'll have an update on this developing story for you in 10 minutes. julie haener is live at the newsroom with a look at the other stories we're also

beachgoers were only allowed into shallow waters after a great white shark was spotted off the coast on sunday. those restrictions could be enforced again if there's another shark sighting in that area. the contra costa county sheriff's office will be looking for intoxicated workers this weekend. the marine patrol will be canvassing the area. this campaign lasts through sunday. it's good to see that the waters outside stinson are back open. but will the fog stay away for you to enjoy the weekend? let's check in with chief meteorologist bill martin. >> it's been clearing, i think there'll be more clearing tomorrow but not so much. there's the golden gate bridge right here we're out in sunset and the richmond districts.

the buoy gusting to 22 out of the west. that's a west wind just like this. that west wind is blowing across the avenues up in the golden gate park about 15 miles per hour. what that's going to do is bring that fog in tonight. so temperatures tomorrow you see them just mid-60s out across the bay. upper 60s. low 70s out toward lafayette. i would expect mid-80s out here. and mid-70s. i would expect low 90s and we're just going to do mid-80s. these are areas this time of year you would expect mid-90s. fire danger is way -- not way down but it's not as bad as it would have been especially when you're doing those 101s a few days ago. this is the reason why temperatures are staying that way. low pressure center. we've seen it all yearlong. that's why it's been so wet around here. so much snow in the mountains. this time of year it doesn't bring rain or snow it just brings on shore winds and it helps enhance the fog. so the marine layer is coming back. it's not there yet but it'll be

back here tomorrow morning. things will start to cool off. tomorrow a little cooler. sunday a little warmer. so right now sunday is going to be the warmest day on the weekend. when i say a little warm i don't mean a degree or two, maybe four or five degrees warmer. we're going to see more low 80s on sunday. i don't know if you'll notice much of a difference between the two days. maybe if you're inland but it's not a huge difference. there's the fog tonight. it's shooting across the san francisco area across the twin peaks and it's into the alameda area. late at night. that's the biggest fog foot footprint we have seen. there it goes, it comes back to the coast. and yes i think steinson beach is going to clear up a little bit in the afternoon. forecast highs tomorrow, we have a lot of cities to show you. 44 of them. still kind of mild. air quality is good, 80 in gilroy. that's nice. a nice day. we live in the best place in

lawmakers in the house of representatives have passed a new bill to change long standing law on how patents are awarded. the new legislation would grant a patent on the first person to file for a patent not to the original inventor. there's a new effort in washington tonight to legalize the multi billion dollars industry of online poker.

surviving passengers are now headed. good evening everyone i'm mike mibach in tonight for san francisco somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. it was a horrific scene as passengers escaped a burning amtrak train outside of reno. ken wayne is live from where that train was supposed to arrive. >> reporter: there were 204 people on that train. 109 of them were bound here for the emeryville station this afternoon. two have been confirmed dead in this accident. a law enforcement officer told me one of the dead is the conductor. take a look now at some video of the crash, video that was shot by a passenger. you can see one of the
