for waking up with us. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, june 25th. it's time to check your saturday forecast with rosemary. >> the low cloud, fog hugging the coast and partly to mostly cloudy skies around the bay area. the breeze picking up this afternoon, a little gusty in concord but temperatures similar to yesterday, and our highs slightly cooler than yesterday. widespread over 50s, low 60s on the coast and nearing 80 degrees inland. we'll break this down, looking at the current conditions, coming up in just a true moments. topping our news this morning, an investigation is now underway into an amtrak train crash that left at least five people dead. that train was headed here to the bay area when it crashed late yesterday morning. all this happened around 11:25 a.m., about 70 miles east of reno. the amtrak train slammed into a big rig and a search of the wreckage is understand way. the death toll could rise. ali rasmus joins us live with more on what passengers saw and the cell phone videos taken in

the aftermath. ali. >> reporter: this emeryville amtrak station was supposed to be the final stop for the california stepper, the train involved in this craig. we've made several calls to amtrak and have not heard back. what is still unclear are the number of people killed in this crash. the nevada highway patrol says five people died, of them amtrak says one of the persons who died was an amtrak crewmember, a conductor. the driver of that semi-truck also died. but investigators say they have to comb through the wreckage of that train crash to figure out and confirm if there are more victims. >> get away from the smoke! >> this video captured the commotion minutes after a semi- truck plowed into the side of an amtrak train. 200 passengers were onboard. >> the train shook and rocked off -- and fire shot through the sides of the windows. >> the flames spread through at least two cars on the train.

the crash happened at a railroad crossing, 70 miles east of reno in nevada. witnesses told investigators it appeared the driver of the semi didn't stop at the crossing. the california zephyr was en route from chicago to emeryville, 20 people onboard taken to hospital,others evacuated calmly. >> people just kept -- in an orderly way kept walking to the back and getting out as fast as they could, some through the windows. >> as soon as everyone got out, that's when the car changed. caught on fire. >> after that passengers were bussed to or train stations, some took the bus back to emeryville. they arrived around midnight, more than 12 hours after the crash happened. >> i don't think i would want to ride the train again. >> reporter: the national transportation safety board has a team of investigators at the crash site this morning. that agency is taking over the investigation. we did reach one of their

spokespersons in washington, d.c. this morning, who said they won't have another update for us until later this afternoon. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. a woman is in the hospital after firefighters rescued her from a burning home. it started after 1:00 in morning on falcon drive in hercules. neighbors called 911 after seeing flames coming from the home. contra costa and other fire crews arrived and entered the home. that's when they found a woman unconscious inside. firefighters pulled her out and performed cpr. >> the fire is under investigation. there's no real signs that indicate anything other than an accidental fire. >> a helicopter took the woman to the hospital. no word on her condition this morning. also overnight a man is recovering after being shot in the chest and elbow. it happened in oakland after midnight. the victim was taken to the hospital and police say he is in stable condition. so far, they have no suspects. anyone with information is asked to call oakland police.

this morning same-sex marriage is legal in new york state. supporters hit the streets last night to celebrity the passage of the bill making same-sex marriage legal there. the republican-led state senate passed the bill narrowly 33-29. the governor immediately signed that bill. supporters are calling the move historic. >> it's amazing, we have the same rights everybody has, can be treated as equals and be there for each other going forward. so. >> do you feel it was too late in coming? >> too late? i mean, it's never too late to become equal. >> same-sex couples will be able to start marrying in new york sometime in late july. new york is the largest state in the country to make same-sex marriage legal. the other states are iowa, massachusetts, new hampshire, vermont, connecticut, as well as the district of columbia. that move in new york comes on a same weekend as san

francisco's pride set operation. this morning's highlight is the insulation of the pink trining. on twin peaks. volunteers are there now putting up the tarps. a ceremony starts at 10:00 this morning. it dates back to world war ii, when nazis used the image to identify and shame homosexuals. since then the gay commune has embraced it as a symbol of pride. pride celebration started yesterday afternoon with the annual transmarch. thousands walked from the park to civic center plaza. more than one million people are expected to take part in pride events this weekends, larger than the city's population. san francisco police say they're ready for the large crowd and they are warning partied-goers to stay under control with their alcohol. >> a lot of people they come in, enjoy celebration, have a little to drink. people are become intoxicated and people tempers get short and it's a potential to cause violence and that's what we want to prevent. >> the fatal shooting at a

street party last year is big increased security this year. 19-year-old steven hill died last june after a man shot into the crowd. this year security officers will check bags and use wands to look for weapons. the pride celebration culminates with tomorrow's big parade. here's the route. parade will run west beginning at beal and ending on 8th street. it stretches 1.3 miles. it starts at 10:fully a.m. and is expected to end around 2:30 in the afternoon. public transit is getting ready for the million plus people expected in san francisco this weekend. muni is adding extra service to the j light rail line. however, muni is also rerouting some bus routes. bart is adding extra cars to help deal with the large crowds. golden gate bridge service is also adding ferry service. stay with ktvu for continuing coverage of the pride celebration in the city. on our website we have a full list of pride events taking police this weekend.

in an hour, volunteers are going to launch another search for michelle le. police are investigating the case as a homicide but family and friends are holding out hope that le is still alive. last weekend more than 450 people showed up to help look for her in a remote area of hayward. volunteers who want to take part in today's search should meet at the search command center on cypress avenue at 8 this morning. in the midwest, about 12,000 homes and minot, north dakota are evacuated because of flood concerns. today the surging river is expected to hit its peak at 8 1/2 feet above major flood stage sage. the souris river was already 5 feet above flood stage yesterday and is expected to flood tonight. the rain will only makes things works of the so far 2500 homes have been swamped. by the time the weekend is over that number is expected to double. >> my sister called me and her

will reopen, but we'll keep an eye on this developing situation and we'll keep you updated when we know the traffic is going to be allowed become through that area. in the meantime, both directions of part of highway 101 in san jose are now back open. around 6:30 this morning, the northbound and southbound lanes from capitol expressway to the 280 reopened. but they are going to shut down again tonight. those lanes will close at 11:00, they'll reopen at 8:00 tomorrow morning on sunday close from 10:00 at night until 5 a.m. monday. all that is part of the tully road interchange improvement project. it's been a center of debate for months and this morning a ruling on a gang inning junction in the east bay. and the international event that governor gavin newsom is trying to land for california that could bring in some extra dollars for the state. ♪ let's go out to the dmv

good morning to you. a bright start in bay point this morning. mostly sunny skies, about 53 degrees. hundreds of people being forced to evacuate after heavy rain caused severe flooding in southwest china. police and firefighters are building bridges with logs to help people cross a swollen river. parts of northern and central china have been experiencing heavy flooding. officials say 175 people there have died. the water caused nearly $5 billion in damages. this morning we're learning that at least 25 people were killed during two separate bomb engines afghanistan. the first attack happened today in eastern afghanistan in the logar province. officials say a car bomb blew up outside a hospital, killing 15 and injuring 43 others. yesterday a bicycle bomb blew up and killed 10 people and wounded 24 others. in this weekend's online video address, president obama says he is committed to helping reduce the nation's deficit. but he added the country can't

rely solely on cuts. >> we can't simply cut our way to prosperity. we need to do what is necessary to grow our economy, create good, middle-class jobs and make it possible for all americans to pursue their dreams. >> mr. obama taped this yesterday in pittsburgh. he toured the national robotics engineering center on that campus. vice president joe biden will be in ohio tonight to speak at a democratic dinner and as the 2012 election gets closer he is expect to focus on the economy. vice president spoke frequently about his blue collar up bringing during the 2008 campaign. he is expected to do the same again in the 2012 election. this economic focus comes as president obama continues to struggle with economic recovery. the national unemployment rate is at 9.1%. lieutenant governor gavin newsom has a part-time job. he's been named the chairman of the committee trying to bring the 2022 olympic winter games

to lake tahoe. earlier this week he spoke about the benefits of bringing the games to california. newsom says hosting the games would give a boost to the economy. the committee is not expected to pick a host city until at least 2015. san jose's religious community is coming together to pray for city workers. >> we ask you to send our love to those workers who are fearful of losing their jobs, pay their rent. >> the council held this blessing service yesterday outside city hall. members and city workers called on mayor reed to end his campaign for special election that would ask voters to change the charter. that change would allow city leaders to cut workers' pay and pensions. >> we're looking at a grab 80 to $100 million, and trying to avoid continuing to cut services and preserve services for our people. >> there are other proposals to

help close the san jose deficit clawing a sales tax hike and a special tax dedicated to public safety. with less than a week left to balance oakland's budget, the city council is pitching last-mundt proposals. the society is facing a $58 million deficit, threatening to cut the police force. yesterday the city council proposed three ideas, all would save library services, fire stations and police jobs. but they vary on how to accomplish the savings. city councilmembers will discuss the idea at their next meeting on tuesday. a judge is ordering a preliminary injunction five alleged gang members in oakland's fruitvale neighborhood. the ruling that came down yesterday prohibits the men from wearing certain clothing, associating with one another or possessing guns in the area and also enforces a 10 p.m. curfew. opponents say the i injunction it too broad and could lead to racial profiling. >> it does not contribute to public safety. this is the kind of thing we

find reprehensible in totalitarian states and this is what came down today. >> the fruitvale injunction is the second sought by the city. last year the judge issued an injunction against 15 alleged gang members in a north oakland neighborhood. san jose is getting federal assistance in its effort to crack down on gangs. on monday two federal immigration agents will join the gang task force but they're worried did may lead to more deportations. the agents are strictly for criminal investigations aimed at stopping gangs. the agents are on indefinite loan from the federal government. tens of thousands of nascar fans are headed to infineon to watch their favorite drivers hit the track. coming up we'll introduce you to a bay area woman who will be behind the wheel in today's nascar race. you'll meet her next! >> it's a quiet start to the morning. a loevy look outside the doors and oakland this morning. we've got a light breeze, temperatures are mild, a cooldown expected for the afternoon. we'll look at the highs coming up.

lots of screaming and lots of panicking. >> right now a search is underway for more victims of a deadly train crash that amtrak train was headed here to the bay area. and this morning, victims are telling us their terrifying stories. good morning and welcome back to mornings on 2. an amtrak train slammed into a big rig, killing at least five people. now we're hearing from the passengers who finally arrived back in the bay area. the crash happened yesterday

around 11:25 a.m., about 70 miles east of reason oval this is cell phone video taken after the crash. you can see two of the cars on fire and black smoke billowing out. the trains crossing gate and warning lights and gates were operational. the driver is one of confirmed fatalities. police won't have a final death toll until all the cars have been searched. about 20 people were taken to the hospital with injuries. last night the 109 emeryville passengers arrived. after the crash they were put on a bus to sacramento then another train. to the bay area. ktvu was there as they arrived. they told us about the frightening incident. >> too much smoking but people screaming, trying to get out. and the smoke is going towards the back. that's where we were and just trying to keep ahead of the smoke. >> the national transportation safety board is now investigating the truck driver. an autopsy and toxicology tests will determine if there was alcohol or drugs in the system.

they will also examine his driving and medical records. same-sex marriage is now legal in new york state, and governor cuomo says his state is setting an example for the rest of the nation. >> the other states look to new york for the progressive direction, and what we said today is you look to new york once again, because new york made a powerful statement, not just for the people of new york but the people all across the nation. >> cuomo signed the marriage equality bill into law les night. the republican-led state senate narrowly passed the bill earlier in the evening. critics are already speaking out. new york's archbishop released a statement saying he is deeply disappointed and troubled by the actions of state leaders. lieutenant governor gavin newsom also responded to new york's legalization of same-sex marriage. you'll recall newsom allowed

same-sex marriages to be performed at san francisco city hall in 2004, before being ordered by the courts to stop. a san francisco group is putting pressure on ed lee to run for mayor. the group plans to open a campaign office for lee today in a former cheese restaurant. he's been interim mayor since gavin newsom left the post in january. lee insists he will not run for mayor, but supporters hope to convince him to change his mind. this morning, a woman is being evaluated after driving her car into the san mateo lagoon. police and firefighters responded to the scene around 2:45 this morning. the woman was fond on top of her submerged car and told rescue crews her husband and baby were in the car but then changed her story. she was taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation. four people were kayaking near red rock island. one person fell in the water and was unable to get back in the kayak.

coast guard pulled them from the water and treated them for lipo thermia. antioch police asking residents to file their own reports when they fall victim to certain crimes. the city doesn't have enough officers sony stead of calling police to report certain crimes, they want residents to get help online. it's called cop lodge pick it lewis people to submit their own reports, freeing up officers to handle more urgent crimes. residents have mixed feelings about the idea. >> they definitely can't be everywhere, and the more information he can give them, the better they can do their jobs. >> i think it's a disconnection from the community. i think it sends a bad image. >> the police department says the program will cost the city more than $22,000 a year for are first yew better after that is expected to save the city $80,000 a year. police chief says the only exception is em with no internet access, and niece kazan officer will be sent out. the search is on for the two teens who attacked security guards over stolen baby

formula. and it happened thursday in mountainview. two teenage girls were spotted stealing formula. the guards confronted the girls and two other teens attacked the guards before leaving the scene. one guard had to be taken to the hospital. police believe the teens plans on selling the formula on the street for cash. dozens of bay area murals are now being inspected after inappropriate images were found hidden in artwork at a school. these murals found all over san francisco were created by 46- year-old anthony norris. they'll month, norris was arrested for child pornography. now he is suspected of placing offensive images in his murals. yesterday police say norris may have also targeted other by area cities with the inappropriate art. >> the other sites we know of worked on were the old mill elementary school in mill valley, global family school in

oakland, and the vista elementary a school in san rafael. >> police say inappropriate images have been found in norris' murals and they're removed and then sent to the fbi. right now norris is out on bail. his lawyer told us she had not heard these latest allegations. rohnert park police are trying to identify a man who they say attacked a female jogger. the woman told police the assailant was a skinny white man 30 with a light complection. police say the jogger was attacked last friday on five creek trail. the man came out of the bushes and attacked the woman with a boxcutter. she is okay. u.s. airways is facing legal trouble after being accused of racial profiling. this video from last wednesday shows deshawn talking with the captain of a flight after being asked to pull up his sagging pants. he said he already pulled up his pants. was then escorted off the plane and arrested. the naacp is now filing a

lawsuit. the organization is claiming the airways didn't use the seam standards who wore a male passengers who wore a bikini and boots. >> treatment of black people against whites. that's call it for what it is. it reflected the unfortunate dog past of america. >> civil rights leaders say u.s. airways needs to offer sensitivity training to its employees. the airline has not responded to that lawsuit. but it has said in the past it has no formal dress code. good morning to you. a mild start outside, starting with a little low cloud cover in some areas around the bay. mostly sunny, most of us will be mostly sunny into the afternoon. outside our doors the winds generally light out there this morning, in oakland the southwesterly about 10 miles per hour. hayward partly cloudy dirt, little further east danville looking at mostly sunny skies,

around sausalito. by noontime or so, most of us dealing with mostly sunny skies, but it's right there along the edge it could easily stick right there along the afternoon, and then be back with us for the evening hours. your satellite view, sort of a zonal flow going on, just a week trough passing overhead. that will dip our temperatures just a little bit, keep the onshore sea breeze blowing so in the afternoon, when the winds pick up just a little bit, could be a little cool in some spots. and generally our temperatures below average for this time of year and cooler than what we saw yesterday. so for today, a.m. clouds, cooler conditions, by sunday a slightly warmer pattern will set up for sunday, monday. today we're going to be from 5 to 10 degrees below average. 75 expected in napa for the afternoon. 72 in vallejo. 79 in concord. so for the first weekend of summer, it really doesn't feel look it. some of you may appreciate that. 66 in hayward. 67 in oakland. and low 60s for san francisco. 72 expected redwood city this afternoon.

forecast the possibility of a little wet weather. we'll explain. we've learned at least five people are dead after an amtrak train slammed into a big really in nevada. the crash happened yesterday about 70 miles east of reno. you are looking at cell phone video taken shortly after that crash. you can see the two cars in the front on fire with black smoke billowing out. the nevada highway patrol says the crossing gates and warning lights were operating. but witnesses say that big rig driver made no attempt to stop and just crashed right true the gate. he is one of the confirmed fatalities. police say they will not have a final death toll until all the cars have been searched. about 20 people were taken to the hospital with injuries. now, after that crash, the uninjured passengers were put on a bus to sacramento, then on another train and bus to the bayer. around 11 last night, the 109 emeryville bound passengers arrived. we were there as they arrived and told us with the moment that truck and train collided.

bit. new from overnight, an east bay woman in the hot after firefighters rescued her from a burning home. it all started just after 1:00 this morning on falcon drive in hercules. neighbors called 911 after seeing flames coming from that house. contra costa county and other fire crews arrived and entered the home. that's when they found the woman conscious inside. firefighters pulled her out and performed cpr. >> the fire is under investigation. there's no real signs that indicate anything other than an accidental fire. >> a helicopter took the woman to the hospital. there's no word on her condition this morning. in oakland, a man is recovering after being shot in the chest and elbow. that happened just after midnight on 75th avenue. the victim was taken to the hospital and police say he is in stable condition. so far, they don't have any suspects. but anyone with information is asked to call the oakland police. thousands of people have left their homes in north dakota this morning as surging

dozens of volunteers just finished setting up a pink triangle on san francisco twin peaks as part of this weekend's pride celebration. good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. we are going to have a live report from twin peaks where that triangle is now sitting, coming up. but first the nevada highway patrol who is now saying -- excuse me, go ahead. saying at least five people were killed when a big rig truck plowed into an amtrak train headed for the bay area. this is cell phone video of that crash that happened yesterday afternoon about 70 miles east of reno.

polices say the cross ising guards was down and the lights were working when the big rig crashed through the gate into the train. 109 passengers finally made it to the emeryville station and described. >> much smoke rolling towards the back and that's where we were, and we were just trying to keep ahead of the smoke. >> the national transportation safety board is now investigating that truck driver. an autopsy and toxicology reports will determine if there were alcohol or drugs in his system and examine his driving and medical records. this morning a woman is evaluated after driving her car into the lagoon. police and firefighters responded to the scene around 2:45 this morning. the woman was lying on her submerged car. should he said her husband and ben were in the car. when firefighters couldn't find anyone, she changed her story. she was taken to the hospital for mental evaluation. the coast guard was called in for an early morning rescue near the richmond bridge. around 1 a.m.

four people were kayaking. one person fell into the water and was unable to get back in the kayak. the coast guard treated him for hypotherm that. >> today's san francisco pride weekend began this morning with the pink triangle. ali is live on twin peaks where the symbol is seen for miles. >> reporter: good morning. the volunteers got here about an hour ago, they worked fast so now they are taking a break, getting coffee, posing for this nice picture. they've completed their work. this is the final product. you can see it this pink triangle display is just about done. it's made up of 175 pink tarps, nailed together. these are a few of the leftovers here off to the right here on the corner. you can see it the triangle from as far as 20 miles away. the pink trapping sample an acre-wide and we have a picture of what it looks like from downhill. this is on the side of twin peaks overlooking san

francisco. more than 120 volunteers worked to put this display together. it's one of several events for san francisco's pride weekend. the organizer explained that 16 years ago he and a friend wanted to add color to the pride festivities and thought twin peaks would make a nice canvas. they chose to display the pink triangle because that was the symbol the nazis used to identify gays in the concentration camp. >> we want people to understand where the pink triangle began so that's how we started off the weekend, as more on the somber note, and then we get to the festivities. but we want team for know where we were and how far we've come since then. >> on the note, this morning there will be a dedication ceremony here at the pink triangle. mayor ed lee, mark loano will be there with other elected officials here from san francisco. then the official celebration get started at 11:00 at civic center plaza. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2
