6:00. good evening everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken pitchet. authorities are calling it an accident. a car plows into a nursing home, killing one person. it happened around 9:45 this morning at the amberwood gardens home on peterson avenue. authorities say a 90-year-old woman visiting the nursing home hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, sending her car through a window and into the common room. at least 10 people were in that room. seven of taken to the hospital, fire officials told ktvu news that one of the victims died this afternoon. a volunteer at the nursing home told our cameras what he saw. >> i saw a car halfway between -- it was halfway in the wall and it just kept moving forward and hit quite a bit of residents. it was pretty scary. >> the driver was not injured in the crash. no word tonight on the identity of the person killed or the conditions of the other victims.

residents at the home have been moved to a different area. no official death toll but quote multiple passenger deaths. that is the latest word tonight from investigators at the scene of that deadly amtrak crash about 70 miles east of reno. the national transportation safety board says recovery of bodies from burnedout train is slow due to concerns that the cars could topple over. investigators say a truck broadsided the train and that its skid marks stretch half the length of a football field. that indicates he tried to stop before slamming into the passing train. so far, the only confirmed dead are the truck driver and a train employee. it's unclear how many bodies remain on the train. it was traveling fromcheck to emeryville -- from chicago. some of those passengers finally made it to the station around 11:00 last night. one woman told ktvu news she shot she was going to lose her family when she saw flames

shooting past the windows. >> the train rocked and fire shot through the sides of the windows and we just kind of ran to the back of the train. there was lots of screaming and lots of panicking. >> i heard lots of screaming, people were jumping, and just there was a lot going on. >> that last woman says that she was in the train car that the truck actually slammed into. they are planning a briefing at 9:30 tonight. we will have an update for you on the 10:00 news. pride weekend in san francisco is hitting its stride. the big parade is tomorrow. today is pink saturday. we're live at deloris park where thousands are getting ready for a march in less than an hour. >> that's right. here in delores park, there are thousands and thousands of people taking part in just one of the festivities of pink

saturday. they're camped out here on the lawn, listening to music, celebrating being part of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. the dike march will begin later tonight. another celebration is taking place in civic center plaza. thousands of people came out to show solidarity, love and support for equal rights. many who attended were dressed in costume or in pink. >> it's just really liberation. it's great to be around a whole bunch of different people who represent you, come from all different walks of life. we have a common goal and common theme: freedom, equal rights, and love. >> festivities at delores park began at 3:00 this afternoon. it celebrates the lesbian community. they organized the annual dike march and the annual dikes on

bikes event. the party continues and authorities are hoping to keep the peace. we'll have more on that coming up at 10:00. reporting live from san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news. coverage continues in 12 minutes with the significance of the huge pink triangle installed during a ceremony today on a hillside overlooking the city. as for tomorrow's big parade, it starts at 10:30 in the morning. the parade starts at beal street and runs up market ending near 8th street at civic center. the parade route stretches 1.3 miles. in new york city, there is jubilation in some circles after the governor signed a bill late last night legalizing same-sex marriage in that sate. >> we want equality in society, equality in our relationships, equality in our love, equality in our families. >> there were celebrations in the streets after that signing. in his remarks, he noted that new york city was the site of the stonewall riots.

it's considered the flashpoint of the guy rights movement, marking the first-time gays and lesbians fought back against sanctions of homosex with the. a woman is hospitalized tonight after her home caught fire overnight. a neighbor spotted flames coming from the home on falcon drive around 1:00 this morning. firefighters say they found the woman in the home unconscious and unresponsive. they did manage to resuscitate her. investigators have not yet said what may have sparked the fire. >> there's no real sign that indicate anything other than an accidental fire. >> firefighters, though, do say it could have started in the kitchen and that damage to that home was significant. now to the north bay where a man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in santa rosa early this morning was captured in marin county. santa rosa police say highway patrol officers spotted 39-year-

old latroy clinton, sr. driving south at about 2:15 this morning. officers chased him into marin county and stopped his van with a spike strip. clinton ran across the freeway and tried to carjack a driver. that's when officers took him into custody. new numbers out tonight indicate some relief for drivers as gas prices move lower. according to triple a., the national average for a gallon of regular now sits at $3.58 this weekend. in san francisco, the price is $3.94. it's $3.85 in san jose and in oakland, the average price is $3.83. triple a. says high gas prices will mean fewer drivers on the road for the 4th of july holiday. this is a live picture of interstate 80 in emeryville. gas is 60 cents more expensive than last year and they expect a 2.5% decrease in the number of people traveling 50 miles or more for the holiday. just days after announcing his plan to withdraw u.s.

troops from afghanistan, president obama is turning his attention back to issues on the homefront. >> even though we've turned our economy in the right direction over the past couple of years, many americans are still hurting. and now, is the time to focus on nation building here at home. >> the president made this week's address from carnegie melon university where he focused on job creation in the u.s. manufacturing industry. mr. obama also said he is willing to work with republicans to improve the nation's economy. a soldier made his way home from a dangerous mission in afghanistan today. army scout russell mccoy got a welcome he didn't expect. ktvu is live in petaluma with the homecoming. >> we'll be seeing more welcome home parties like this one. >> reporter: 22-year-old

through the wall of a small clinic in the logar province and exploded. most of the victims are women and children. this comes less than a day after a blast in the province killed at least 10 people. in other news from around world tonight, from libya, state television is airing this video and claiming a nato airstrike killed 15 people today in brega. nato denies it carried out any strike in that area today. however, nato does say alliance warplanes hit several targets in the vicinity yesterday. nato says there's no evidence civilians had been killed or wounded. in botswana allowed herself to dine on fat cakes and dumplings. ms. obama has been in africa all week promoting healthy living. she is scheduled to return to the states on monday. volunteers try again today

month ago. aphony member at the command center in heyward told us information is limited but they are working closely with police and focusing on areas where police tell them to search. officers consider the case as a homicide. oakland police say they are looking for information on a shooting that sent a man to the hospital. it happened around 12:20 this morning. police were called to the 1,000 block of 76th avenue where they found the victim. investigators say he was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. a push is underway in san francisco to get ed lee to run for mayor. as ktvu reports, fans of the mayor opened a campaign headquarters today hoping to convince him to join the race. >> reporter: hundreds of people turned out for the grand opening of this mayoral campaign office. one notable absence, a candidate. current mayor ed lee is him and he told me he is not running for mayor. >> i think the city deserves every minute of my time to

about what i vote on. >> reporter: so much for that. after the civil war, general william sherman declined to run for the presidency saying if nominated, i will not run. in the end, he avoided giving a sherman statement, giving his supporters that glimmer of hope. >> a san jose grocery store chain awarded scholarships to deserving students. the fundraising drive at bay area pueblo stores raised more than $270,000 for scholarships. this afternoon's event recognized about 100 scholarship winners and the generosity of donors to made it possible for the students to go to college. executives say with funding cuts, it's critical that students receive community support. festivities got an early start today. volunteers spent this morning setting up a huge pink triangle overlooking the city. we explain the symbol's

significance and how it's become a san francisco tradition. >> reporter: you can hear a symphony of hammers on the top of twin peeks this morning, the sound of 120 volunteers at work. >> quite striking what you see and very moving as well, the people give up their time to do this and to remember. >> reporter: the wind and fog didn't keep the volunteers away. they spent the morning piecing together 175 tarps. the display they created is more than an acre wide. the pink triangle is so large, it can be seen more than it weren't miles away. they started this tradition 16 years ago. >> the first year, they didn't have permits or anything, just the people of san francisco woke up that saturday morning and there was a pink triangle. >> reporter: that was the symbol used by the nazis to identify guys in concentration camps. >> we want people to understand the tragic history of where the pink triangle began. we want people to know where we were and how far we've come since then. >> it is really exciting what

morning underneath the richmond bridge. a man in his 50s was in the water and was unable to get back into his kayak. the coast guard arrived at about 2:00 a.m. he was taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia. well, it's the time of year we typically talk about low clouds and fog pulling back, but what would be atypical would be talking about some rain. right now on the maps, i can show you this, mainly south of the golden gate bridge, right around san francisco, you can see the coverage closer to ocean beach and also right around golden gate park. it looks like a few breaks downtown closer to the bay bridge. first thing tomorrow morning, the overnight lows, the fog will be filling in. we could have some drizzle coast side. coolest locations will be in the upper 80s, san jose 50.

some patchy fog, temperatures in the upper 50s and warming up by about 12:00 into the lower 60s with a sun cloud mix. also, up toward infineon raceway, you can see the forecast tomorrow with the temperatures warming back up into the upper 70s approaching the 80-degree mark by 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. this area of low pressure has been cooling off the bay area. this will be on the move and as a result, temperatures do warm up a little bit for sunday and into monday. this is the interesting weather pattern developing for wednesday, definitely a big drop-off in temperatures, more clouds and latest forecast models still bringing in the chance of a few showers in the north bay. highest chance would be early wednesday morning. here's our fog forecast model showing you an increase in the coverage overnight tonight into early sunday morning. here we are at 6:00 and 7:00 and we put this into motion into the afternoon hours, the clouds back to mere the coastline by 3:00 and 4:00.
