good here in bass poll. cazadero two tenths of an inch. line stretching marin county point rays and a good ban offshore. in about an hour or so should move into san francisco and san mateo coast. now starting to inch closer towards the napa county area. 60s today and heaviest rain to the north and lesser amounts to the south. steve, good morning northbound traffic on interstate 880 looks pretty good here. remember if it starts to rain people may actually be driving slower and there could be even more collisions reported. as it normally is in winter but here it is summer we might have to deal with that today as steve said. westbound 80 traffic still looks good and dry in berkeley. now back to the desk. sal, thank you. we have new information about last night's triple stabbing outside of a walnut creek car wash. now this happened about 9:00 on north main street near geary. ktvu's allie rasmus live now with details we just found out. and also what one of the

suspects wives' is saying. good morning, allie. >> reporter: good morning, dave. walnut creek police arrested two men early this morning in connection with the stabbing that happened in this car wash parking lot. the car wash is on north main street. just 15 minutes ago we saw walnut creek police pull up to this apartment building here behind us. and that is because one of the two men arrested lives in this building. i had a chance to speak with the wife of one of the two men arrested. the two people arrested. the wife says she didn't want to appear on camera but she says what she believes is that her husband told her three men tried to beat him up in this parking lot. and she thinks that he acted in self-defense. she also explained that he had parked his car in this car wash parking lot because there was no more space in the apartment building lot. now this car wash parking lot is where police say a fight broke out involving several men. it happened around 9:00 last night. three people were stabbed. two of them seriously injured

with stab wounds to the torso. an ambulance transported both of the seriously wounded victims to nearby hospitals. we are told they are now in stable condition. a third man was also stabbed in the forearm however police say he refused medical treatment. but, again, walnut creek police arrested two men that they believe are behind the stabbing. they were looking for them for several hours after this stabbing happened around 9:00 last night. they were booked on martinez detention facility on $50,000 bail. when i spoke to the wife of one of the men arrested she said he hasn't posted bail yet that he is still in that detention facility. we'll try to bring more information and check and see what police are saying in terms of we saw them pull up to this apartment building and we saw them enter one of the residences in this apartment building. presumably the residents of the one person who lives here in this building who was arrested. we'll try to bring you more information in our next live report. live in walnut creek, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:03.

overnight a late night grass fire in concord is under control now. this is a fire that started just after 11:00 last night on discovery way near cal state east bay's concord campus. fire crews quickly responded. they put the flames out about 30 minutes later. no buildings were burned. we still have no word on what caused that fire. one house in union city is the focus of several police investigations. ktvu's kraig debro is in front of that house this morning with more on the string of violence. some of it deadly. kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. i've been looking around the neighborhood. it doesn't appear to be just this house. i want to show you a couple things first. see that blue ban where the garbage is right in front of this house? i've been around enough of these crime scenes to know that those look like bullet holes. if you look up to that house which is 663 on the door there the couple other pop marks that also look like bullet holes. this morning police are focusing on another house and they're looking for a person in connection with a shooting at this home.

they're also trying to figure out why two other people have been the victims of violent deaths here since last september. a man shot here sunday night is still alive. the victims in the other two homicides are not. police got the call around 8:30 sunday night. several people called to report they heard multiple gunshots. police arrived. the 21-year-old man lay wounded in the yard of the home. >> the initial information is at that the suspect approached on foot. i don't have a race. i have dark clothing and that is it. he ran away forwards the train tracks. >> reporter: the unidentified victim is in critical condition. two other people died in this very same home last month 49- year-old reuben was shot and killed here and last september a man who actually lives at the home died following a domestic dispute. there is a suspect in that case, police are still looking for suspects in the other incidences of violence. reporting live in union city, kraig debro, ktvu channel news. we're learning more about

the big river driver involved in friday's deadly amtrak accident east of reno. nevada dmv records show 42-year- old lawrence valli had a half dozen moving violations since 2008 including four speeding tickets. investigators also found a cell phone at the scene of the crash that they believe belonged to valli. they want to know if he was talking or texting on that phone before his big rig smashed into the train. valli was killed along with five other people on the train including the conductor bound for emeryville. one passenger is still listed as missing. time now 6:06. boy, we're following developing news from athens, greece, right now. see this smoke t. is a live picture. that's a television news crew truck that's on fire. set on fire believe by demonstrators. again, this is live from athens, greece. the protests are against government budget cut backs and it's really become a very tense situation as we watch these

live pictures. now there have been reports of the protesters throwing molotov cocktails. we see a tv news satellite truck already on fire. police in riot gear put up barricades right in front of the parliament building because lawmakers will be voting tomorrow on a very tough five year package of tax hikes and spending cuts. a 48 hour general strike started in athens, greece, early this morning. travel in and out of athens is disrupted, but, again, this is just one of the many scenes right now in athens, greece, live where not only riot police are lined up outside of the parliament building but already a television news satellite truck has been set on fire. we'll keep you posted as we check on that later on. well, in election news the little state of iowa is getting crowded with politicians as some key contests for the 2012 presidential race gets closer. today president obama and sarah palin will both be in iowa. coming up at 6:15 we're going

to have a live report from our washington d.c. newsroom on who else is visiting iowa this week. now before heading to iowa, president obama was working with senators. he didn't make any great breakthroughs though in his first round of talks aimed at getting republicans to raise the nation's debt limit. the president met separately yesterday with the republican and democratic senate leaders. republicans continue to insist that they will not vote to raise the debt limit unless democrats first agree to substantial spending cuts. time now 6:08. this morning the oakland city council will talk about tentative agreements on pensions for five city labor unions. the police union has tentatively agreed to pay 9% of its pension plans. the firefighters, professional and technical engineers and other union members, they're expected to make concessions equivalent to 9% as well. the oakland city council starts voting on that budget tonight. oakland by the way has a $58 million budget deficit. all right. 6:08 is the time.

time to check in again on traffic. where are you starting, sal? we're starting here at the toll plaza, pam, in oakland westbound bay bridge traffic looks pretty good coming into san francisco. and, again, we're thinking that the metering lights go on there will be a little more slow traffic. and also as we get closer to the 4th of july holiday at the end of the week we'll see people tailing off and getting vacations in. but right now it still looks kind of normal out there. on the east shore freeway the same thing goes. traffic is busy especially in richmond. but here in berkeley it's evened out. if you're driving on 580 west there's still a crash not in the lanes though. 580 at 680. didn't turn out to be a huge deal if you're driving on the nimitz freeway still clear from hayward to fremont. 6:09. back to steve. sal, thank you, sir. cloudy skies. cool. rain's already in the north and it's getting very close. well, it's moving into marin county now and start to get closer to san francisco as well as our system is beginning to slide in. so for many i'd say east bay,

probably peninsula, south bay morning commute should be okay. cloudy, cool to mild. but north bay and then along the coast drizzle and rain beginning to inch closer. you can see it's coming down pretty hard towards russian river area and santa rosa up into lake county. heavy rain reported an hour ago and right off the marin coast and san mateo and san francisco things starting to light up good as this system slides in. the system for the end of june really deserves a wow. i mean it's pretty impressive. .05 to an inch plus heavier amounts will be to the north. lesser amounts to the south. this looks more like a late morning, early afternoon front that comes through. wind is not a huge factor. 25 maybe gusts to 30 higher elevations but the temperatures way below. 60s, san jose right now. so very mild south wind out ahead of that system. but mid-50s for many or upper 50s hayward, mountain view in there redwood city great look at the low spinning right there off almost eureka. it's going to come right over us. all signs point towards moving in around the north baby this

evening. so we have the front and then the low. so even though once the front goes through any breaks will help destabilize the atmosphere. so rain develops heaviest to the north bay where an inch plus is possible today. cloudy, cool, breezy highings 60s and 70s. i mean just really cool. but the end result is usually flip that around and get very warm about three or four days out and that's exactly what's going to happen. tomorrow, late tonight, tomorrow thunderstorms or morning showers then clear it out of here. but not until that system moves east do i trust it. heaviest rain to the north. extremely cool for june. cloudy with rain developing heaviest amounts in the north in the morning and then late morning, early afternoon for everyone else. south towards the santa clara valley may not get much at all as the system weakens. everyone else will get measurable rain today and record rainfall amounts are possible. san francisco needs .22 to tie a record. clouds, showers on wednesday and clearing on thursday and then everything points towards sunshine and warm to hot conditions as we head into the weekend. well, the sour us river

slowly receding in north dakota but apparently could take more than a week before that water drops from record levels. the river crested in minot yesterday at 13 feet above flood stage. that breaks the record set back in 1881. 3,000 homes are now affected or under water. concern is also growing about the missouri river. a nuclear power plant in a low lying area is surrounded by water but crews are doing their very best to keep that water out. wow. time now just turning 6:12. starting today it's against the law to sell a very popular baby room item. in fact this new federal law applies even if you want to sell a certain baby crib at your garage sale. and we're learning more about a bay area connection to a notorious mobster james whited bulger. he was captured in santa monica last week but he lived for a time in a famous bay area landmark.

that president obama is going to iowa today to talk about a jobs not politics. he'll be at a factory in davenport. also an opportunity for him to confront the criticism from republican hopefuls who have been chris crossing the state over the past several weeks. minnesota congresswoman michele bachmann formally announced her candidacy in her hometown of waterloo yesterday. this morning she's getting heat for mistakenly saying actor john wayne is from waterloo when it was actually serial killer john wainages city who lived there. >> john wayne's parents first home was in waterloo, iowa, and he was from iowa. and of course the main point that i was making are the sensibilities of john wayne which is patriotism, love of country. >> reporter: another potential gop candidate former alaska governor sarah palin is also in iowa today. she and her husband are going to a premier of a documentary that pays tribute to her political career called the

undefeated. the state's closely watched ames straw poll is just six weeks away. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. new details are emerging about notorious boston mobster james whitety bulger including a bay area connection. newly released court records shows he stashed hundreds of thousands of dollars in the walls of an apartment in santa monica where he was captured last week. we're also learning he spent some time here in the bay area. he was sentenced to prison on alcatraz from 1959 to 1962 reportedly after that he vowed never to go back to prison. time now 6:17. a teenager who was visiting california from arizona recovering right now after being shot in the head. 16-year-old zachary lamb was skateboarding at 2:00 in the morning here at nightclub in san diego county yesterday. his father says he went out of that time because there would be little to no traffic around him. a dark colored suv pulled up

next to him, someone got out of the car and robbed him, but one of the thieves shot zachary as they were driving off. >> bang and then i heard him screaming i was shot in the head i need help. i need help. >> the thieves escaped with two dollars and a pack of cigarettes. doctors say that bullet barely missed zachary's brain. police say the two suspects may have been on a spree there were several similar robberies in that rare about the same time. the remains of the walnut creek woman believed to be the first victim of the i-5 strangler have finally been found more than 30 years later. investigators say they found the remains of her in a dry river bed near lake bare yes, sir sea. the i-5 strangler known by roger reese can i be by told investigators about the remains as part of a deal. he says he killed her in 1977 when she was only 21 years old. he's now serving a life

sentence. well, starting today you can't make, sell or resell drop side cribs in the u.s. not even at a garage sale. that's after dozens of recalls of the cribs which are blamed for the deaths of at least 32 children. now the bars on the drop side can cause a space that is large enough for a baby's head to get stuck in and can lead to suffocation. our time now 6:18. los angeles police taking a closer look now at that new video that's come out about giants fan bryan stow. it's 11 seconds long. it's a shaky video, but police confirm it shows a dodger fan wearing the number 23 jersey pointing his finger at bryan stow. there's bryan in the black shirt there. tmz is now identified that dodger fan as juan panda. ktvu news shows bryan stow's close friend danny simon right there this video. sigh nonmonosays it likely explains the message bryan stow sent to him just 90 minutes before the attack in the dodgers stadium parking lot. >> he sent me a text saying that he was scared to be there.

and you know who knows if it happened right after that or not but it sure goes right in line with the text message this he did send to me. >> los angeles police say they're going through every single frame of this video specifically looking at stow's interaction with other dodger fans. police say giovanni ramirez remains the main suspect in that attack. today barry zitto returns to the mound for the giants. he will pitch the sect game of san francisco's double header against the chicago cubs. he's been out for the past ten weeks after spraining his right foot while fielding a bunt against the diamondbacks. pitcher replaced him and will pitch the first game of today's double header. zitto will likely lose his starting job who has become the hottest man in the giants pitching rotation. all right. time now 6:20. >> we have to check with sal. >> i was about to say sal you signed off on barry coming in

roads could be slick too, sal, oil from the exhaust might accumulate since we haven't had rain for three weeks. usually in june we don't talk about this but heavy rain june 4th. along the embarcadero. get your run in early. rain is not far away. i'd say about an hour from san francisco. system in fact it's lighting up just offshore. from the marin coast, san mateo and santa cruz coast i watch in the bottom of the screen there that looks impressive. that could be moderate to heavy rain still a ways away. if you want to leave early beat it i would go now. next hour it will probably move in. cloudy, cool, rain moves in. rainfall will be not so much to maybe an inch plus. the key is low pressure system will come right over so highs will stay extremely cool today about 20 degrees below average for some. mild out ahead of that. san jose a few sun breaks. 60 degrees. 58 redwood city. 54 santa rosa napa airport and san rafael. front and associated low and there's a little enhancement taking place on the low.

this will be with us through wednesday morning. cloudy with rain heaviest north bay offshore from the marin coast and inching closer i would say for most locations this morning or most people morning commute should be all right unless you're in the north bay. everyone else late morning early afternoon when this system comes in. i think it will make it to san jose as it comes in. weaken as it moves south. rain today, clouds, showers on wednesday and out of here thursday and everything points towards sunshine and much warmer weather by the weekend. good news this morning on the housing front. home prices up in 13 of the 20 largest cities during april. washington d.c. had the biggest increase and san francisco came in second. economists say spring usually brings a flurry of new home buyers out. and this year is no exception. last month by the way national home prices sank to their lowest level in nine years. the faa wants boeing to pay a $1 million fine for problems with the oxygen systems in nine of its 777 jet liners. federal investigators found a

teenager fighting for his life. 17-year-old ryan buchanan remains in critical condition after he was buried alive at a santa cruz beach on saturday. park rangers say the teenager was trapped under seven feet of sand after a cave he'd been building collapsed. life guards say they didn't see the teenager building that sand cave until it was too late. all right. our time is 6:27. a very quiet community becomes a scene of a triple stabbing investigation. the two men now in custody and what one of the suspect's wives are telling us this morning. rain is moving in on the bay area. we'll tell you when and where you might have to break out the umbrella.

out of the truck this late in the season. marin county even issued a summer storm warning certainly not something people were counting on so close to july in fact many people visiting san francisco could have to push back some outdoor plans today. we could see as much as an inch here in the north bay with lesser amounts as you go south it will be the fourth rainy day we've had in june and this morning people told us they're just ready for it to really feel like summer. >> now it's raining. >> you were planning to go to the beach? >> now we'll have to stay home. >> reporter: we're keeping a close eye on the clouds here in novato. just look at them sitting on the hill tops there. certainly no flooding expected. but marin county public works has staff on standby at pump stations around the area. they're even telling drivers to be on the look out for possibly slick roads here. and let's check in now with meteorologist steve paulson for a closer look at what we can expect today.

all right. eric, hang in there. the rain's very close to you. in fact the radar is lit up like a christmas tree off the marin san francisco coast. i city think it's about an hour away. there's our system moving in. give every credit see that developing that looks really intense here. i'll get a closer look coming up here. look at that. now still a ways away. we're getting reports of moderate rain to heavy rain especially around santa rosa, cazadero into lake county. bring this down. if you extrapolate that out i'd say about another hour. east bay, peninsula, if you leave now you'll be fine. but in a come hours that has to move in. could be heavy rain for a brief period of time. some rain totals could be over an inch especially along the north bay and maybe along the coast. local drizzle right now but a few one-hundredths to over an inch in some higher locations and also in the north bay temperaturings way below average for this time of year. we have some good news for the holiday weekend. we'll have that on our weather

segment. pam, dave. thank you. two men are in custody this morning after walnut creek police say they stabbed three others outside a car wash. it happened last night on main street near geary. ktvu's allie rasmus joins us now with the details on the victim still in the hospital and the other who's refused help. >> reporter: well, pam, walnut creek police arrested two men early this morning in connection with that stabbing that happened here at this car wash parking lot. police arrested two men a few hours ago. they were booked into a martinez detention facility on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. we know at least one of the two men arrested lives in this apartment building right here behind us. this is right next to the car wash right next door to where this stabbing happened. about 45 minutes ago we watched two walnut creek police patrol cars pull up to the apartment building and enter one of the residences. i had a chance to talk with the wife of one of the men arrested. she didn't want to appear on camera, but she says her

husband was acting in self- defense and that he parked his car for the night at this car wash because there was no more space left in the apartment lot. she says that her husband told her that three men tried to jump him and he tried to fight them off. but obviously police don't believe that story. they arrested him and another man on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. some of the people who live in this apartment building told us that they're surprised because they've never had any problems here before. >> i've lived here like two years and everything's okay. >> reporter: so you're surprised by what happened in that parking lot? >> i'm surprised, yeah. >> reporter: now this stabbing happened around 9:00 last night. according to police there was some sort of dispute or fight that happened in the car wash parking lot. the result of that was that three people were stabbed, two of them seriously injured with stab wounds to the torso. the two victims were taken by ambulance to a hospital in critical condition. this morning police say their condition is now stable. a third man was stabbed in the

candidate tim pawlenty in new york city speaking before the council on foreign relations. we wanted to let you hear just a little of what he was saying. we'll keep tabs on his speech and get more details later on. time now 636:67:89 five months now have passed since the january tucson shooting rampage where six people were shot dead, 13 were wounded including congresswoman gabrielle giffords. now congresswoman giffords is making a big step in her recovery. coming up at 6:45 we'll show you the public event where the congresswoman decided to step out in public. today state lawmakers in sacramento will vote on the latest budget plan negotiated by democrats and the governor. the governor gave up the hope of striking a deal with republicans to get their support for extending taxes. instead the new budget relies on deep cuts. especially to the state's public universities and the court system. and it anticipated $4 billion in new revenue from an

improving economy. now the governor says already this year the state has taken in $4 billion in unexpected revenue, but if the anticipated new revenue in the next fiscal year does not materialize, there are trigger cuts built into the budget to make up the difference. >> going forward we do expect more revenues in the budget year coming up. but in case we're overoptimistic we have severe trigger cuts that will be triggered and go into effect and those are real. >> the governor's office will determine in january whether the trigger cuts will take effect. they include shortening the school year by seven days. time now 6:38. the new political redistricting map for california could mean a boost for democrats in next year's election. the new political boundaries -- take a look at them. this is california being drawn up by a citizens commission. analysts who studied this say that in the next congressional election three to five seats

now held by republicans could shift to democrats. the family of a murdered san leandro man hopes to draw attention to his death by holding a vigil this afternoon. gary jones was shot and killed four years ago when he stopped for gas in hayward. now the surveillance tape shows two men in a silver or gray van following him to the station. police say the men were stealing the medical marijuana he had just picked up from a dispensary. the family has posted a $70,000 reward for information leading to the killers. time now 6:39. we know rain's coming. let's check in with sal. how's the toll plaza? well, you know it's getting busier, dave. we still don't see that holiday light conditions. those holiday light conditions that we are expecting some time this week. maybe it will be tomorrow or the next day. we see big back up here at the toll plaza. we also see construction worker on the roof of that new toll plaza administration building they're building there. westbound traffic backed up for about a 10 to 12 minute delay.

unstable air behind it and then the low itself. so anywhere from .05 to maybe over an inch of rain. i've seen projections of 1.5 plus north and east of us. so it wouldn't take much. not a big wind producer. but a temperature-wise band of really cool temperatures will settle in today. good 5 to 20 degrees below average this time of year. out ahead of it a south wind very mild upper 50s low 60s mountain view, hayward, redwood city, san jose. 54 seems popular. san francisco, san rafael, napa, santa rosa great look at the low spinning there as it heads into northern california. eventually it's going to end up over us and therein lies the possibility of thundershowers and a continuation of unsettled weather into tomorrow. enhancement taking place as well. watch in the last few frames right there. not only do we get that to come through then that has to come by this evening into tomorrow morning. so very unsettled for the next 48 hours. then things calm down we start to warm it up. rain develops heaviest north bay and along the coast and higher elevations cloudy, cool and breezy with 60s and 70s. but, again, that low it's going

picture from our photo journalist, we're bracing for a rare rainy summer day. just a couple days before the 4th of july weekend. steve says the rain should be hitting you very soon. we'll keep watching and we'll have our live team coverage for you at the top of the hour. a late night grass fire this one in concord is now under control. started just after 11:00 last night on discovery way near cal state east bay's concord campus. fire crews quickly rushed to the scene. they put out the flames about 30 minutes. one home, several police investigations. ktvu's kraig debro is in front of a union city house that has been the site of many recent shootings. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. most recently police are looking for a suspect in a shooting that happened on sunday night. since we've been here we've noticed it's not just this home 657 whipple. take a look at that blue bin there in the front of this

other home next door you can see what looks to be some bullet holes in that bin. and just up from there on the door frame on the right hand side of the door frame i actually walked up there and looked at that. those also look to me to be bullet holes. it's the house next door, the beige house, 657 whipple road about a mile east of 880 where there have been multiple violent deaths since last september. police say a man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt walked up to that home on whipple about a mile east of 880 on sunday night. the man then pulled a gun and shot a man standing in the yard of the home around 8:30 that night. when police arrived they immediately began looking for the shooter. >> multiple officers responded and we've done a neighborhood canvass search. we also checked on the welfare of the neighboring residence to make sure everybody was okay there. as well as the creek trail behind the home. >> reporter: now with so many shootings it is a little scary they're not finding the suspect. no suspect was found sunday night. the victim shot multiple times

and has life threatening injuries. what is it about this home that's seen two other people killed here. one of the men who lived here was actually the owner of the home killed in a domestic violence dispute. just last month a 49-year-old man was killed with one exception police have not made a connection between the people who live in the home and the violence i'm going to go try to knock on the door of that home and see if i can speak to somebody inside. reporting live in union city, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:48. well, wounded arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords got a standing ovation last night at her first public appearance since that shooting rampage in january. take a look. here's some of the photos showing the congresswoman as she continues her recovery. now we've heard she was at a nasa awards ceremony last night in houston along with her husband there, astronaut mark kelly. reports say the 41-year-old congresswoman entered the ceremony while being pushed in a wheelchair. she also waved and smiled at the crowd.

testimony continues today in florida in the casey anthony murder trial. one day after a judge denied a mistrial. >> based upon the reports that the court has reviewed, the court will find that the defendant is competent to continue to proceed. >> anthony's team of lawyers try to get a mistrial telling a judge that they do not believe casey omentally competent based on private discussions. she was given three mental exams and found to be competent. anthony is accused of suffocating her toddler, caylee, then dumping the little girl's body in the nearby woods. she's pleaded not guilty. time now 6:49. that wild fire near the lost alamos nuclear lab in new mexico forced the evacuations of thousands of people. now it started sunday. it's already burned about 50,000 acres and destroyed 30 buildings. the lab contains as you know nuclear material in secured vaults. officials are saying the radioactive materials are safe from the flames. a lot of the people who were

just heard from ron in cazadero .30. middletown lake county just starting to rain there. joe up in oak month said rain beginning there as well. north bay look how that is just -- it's inching towards the marin coast it's in marin county now but very close to san francisco maybe about an hour away san francisco and also the peninsula along the san mateo coast it's going to take a while to get to the east bay and south bay. but it will get there. couple points on this system it's the front itself. now you're seeing enhancement as it gets closer. springtime i would say we expect it into june for crying out loud. record rains are possible for 24 hours today. sap san francisco needs to pick up .22. looks like that's likely. once the system swings in and then you have the associated low that has to come in. 50s, 54 to 60. san jose 60 with a south wind. mild for some, cool for others. plenty going on. the low continuing to develop as it gets closer and that has to go over. first the front then the low this evening into tomorrow. so rain develops heaviest in the north bay. it's already developed for
