at about 11:00 this morning. >> he said that the guy came in, sat next to her, and then she saw the gun. >> reporter: saw the gun? >> yes, she said she saw the gun, yeah. >> reporter: visitors to the senior center say it was an employee who saw the man in the lobby, and he was no strainer. >> yes, i see him all the time. >> reporter: what does he do here? >> stays around, sit in the lobby, have coffee and cookies and cake sometimes. >> reporter: the woman said the man was quiet, they didn't even know his name. police say after the man left the senior center, the employee called 911. police confronted him moments later. >> they did cpr on him to the hospital. and i have since been informed that he has passed away. >> reporter: specifically, police say the man was 55 years old. we talked to a number of people who say they were familiar with this man as they saw him riding the bike around the neighborhood. even police say they had a number of contacts with him, although they didn't go into it

further. the investigation into the officer-involved shooting will be handled by an outside agency. and a parolee recovering from gunshot wounds after a shootout with police on a busy san francisco street. we brought you these pictures this morning, happening about 8 in the morning on golf street. police spotted the man who then fired at them. after the gunfire happened, the man was arrested, taken to the hospital. nobody else was hurt. coming up at 5:30, david stevenson has more on the suspect and why he was severe considered dangerous. and police looking at surveillance video after a deadly robbery after a fairfield market last night . we first brought you the story this moment, the police say the man beat the other so badly he later died from his injuries.

the victim's stepson told ktvu the attackers didn't get a lot of money. >> they stole the whole cash register, there was not even much money in it. at least like $40. >> reporter: police say that the man was well loved in that community. the cameras were rolling when some of the regular customers held a prayer circle this morning. police are looking for three young men who witnesses say left in a light colored vehicle, possibly a honda. and a mysterious incident, during a football game leaving an irish player in a coma. now san francisco police are investigating but it appears they have hit a bit of a roadblock. ktvu has more in san francisco with new information on the case. >> reporter: that is right, police have identified a person of interest in this case. they hope to stick with him, but at this point he is refusing to talk. we were here where a special mass will be held for mark

mcgovern. mark mcgovern had only been in the u.s. for five days. the san francisco team had recruited the 22-year-old to play football, the game is a cross between soccer and rugby. in a photo like this one, the sources say a player hit him in the head on purpose in an area of the field where the ball was not in play. >> we don't know if it was a fight or what happened. we know the victim was down on the ground. there was a person seen standing next to them. and that is the person that -- is a person of interest we would like to talk to. >> reporter: police have not released that player's name. mcgovern is now in critical but stable condition at the general hospital. his family came in from ireland the next day to be by his side. >> seeing what happened, it is just an incident that happened off the ball. >> reporter: donovan was not at the game saturday night, but she says that tempers do tend to happen on the field. >> it is devastating for the people, it is football, it is

scary how easy, how simple something can happen on the pitch. >> reporter: there are many members of the san francisco irish community who attended the game, they are quiet about the incident. they hope the person who did this to mcgovern does the right thing and comes forward. live, san francisco, ktvu. a state-appointed expert back off on the conclusion of what may have caused the san bruno pipeline explosion. earlier he said that the vibrations from an earlier incident weakened the pipeline. now he believes that pressure changes ultimately caused the failure. pg&e normally operated the line from 150-250-pound per square inch. they are reducing the amounts in a nearby pipeline after problems were found in a video inspection. the pipeline is between

hillside boulevard in south san francisco. pg&e says the video inspection showed the minor dents and welding problems. outside experts are being brought in before the section is put back into service. and the deadly crash on the amtrak train, experts are ordering that the crash protection be implemented. it was requested by lawyers for an amtrak employee injured in the friday collision between the semi truck and the train east of reno. the truck driver and five people on the train died, one of them was the conductor who was formerly from concord. and a day-long police sweep looking for suspected gang members, following the recent killing of a three month-old baby. ktvu has more, including why one resident called today's action nothing more than a phony photo op. christian? >> reporter: yeah, ktvu was granted exclusive access as the east palo alto police planned out the search from the sub

station here from a known area of gang members. the search took the officers from the sub station through the streets of east palo alto, investigators saying that the battle between the gangs cost the three month-old boy his life. starting before dawn, ktvu was there as east palo alto police patrol, and probation officers go door-to-door, looking for gang members with outstanding warrants and people with gang activities. >> we are looking for the members involved in the shooting. >> reporter: the june fifth shooting left three month-old jiminez dead. a 16-year-old is involved in the case as well, with weapons charges. police say the gang thought the family was a rival gang group. today, they found only three of the 13 targets, including one who said he is not a gang

member. >> i am trying to keep it cool, not get in trouble or nothing. i don't want to be like those kids for what happened right here. >> reporter: the neighborhood kids helped to catch the two juveniles police say shot the family. but today, members of the east palo alto community were skeptical that the raids will do anything to make the streets safer. >> we all know who the gang members are in the neighborhood. we all know who scares the people, and we're all afraid. we need cops to be serious instead of having these phony photo opportunities. >> reporter: now this is just the latest sweep, the law enforcement here will hold a summit with other police agencies on the peninsula and the fbi to try to stem the gang violence here in east palo alto, live in east palo alto, ktvu channel 2 action news. and the district attorney reviewing the case of a man who died last week, six years after police say another man beat him into unconsciousness. he never woke up and passed away at a hospice.

the man accused of beating him, bergarra, was never charged, and sent back to mexico after his arrest in 2005. he is currently a suspect in a homicide case there. and tonight we're waiting to hear when governor jerry brown will sign the new state budget. the measure passed after the governor brokered a deal with the democratic leadership. the bill relies on cuts to higher education and billions in improved state revenues. today some republican lawmakers are slamming the measure. >> kick the can down the road, and it anticipates revenues that we don't have. it is probably illegal. >> we -- >> the governor did sign several budget trailer bills, including one they tried to fight. that eliminates all the redevelopment agencies, setting up a volunteer program in their place. one of the other trailer bills angered the big on line retailers, making on line shopping more expensive for

people in california. retailers like amazon.com will have to collect a california sales tax on internet transactions. one lawmaker says it is not meant to punish consumers, but rather to enforce a law already on the books. >> these taxes must be paid. the problem has been the california -- that california can't enforce it because they don't know who is selling into the state and who is buying. >> today, amazon protested the new bill by cutting ties with 10,000 california affiliates. those are businesses and nonprofits that earn a commission when somebody follows a link from their website to amazon's website to make a purchase. governor jerry brown has vetoed a controversial bill that would make it easier for unions to organize farm workers in california. the bill would allow farm workers to organize by signing a petition away from the field, rather than holding a secret ballot election at the work place as they do now. union workers say it leads to

intimidation by employers. growers say it would make it eyeser for union organizers to bully workers into joining. today, the governor announced that farm workers are not having their rights. and today, president obama called on lawmakers to be more like his two daughters. he says they get their home work done ahead of time. and with the economy still slow, he says that it is time lawmakers did their job and reached a deal on reducing the deficit. >> reporter: speaking at a white house news conference. the president recognized that many americans are still struggling to get by. >> families are wondering how they deal with the broken refrigerator or busted transmission or how they will finance their kids' college education. and they also worry about the possibility of layoffs. >> reporter: in a challenge to republicans, the president called on congress to extend middle class tax cuts and get rid of the tax breaks for the

nation's richest americans. >> tax breaks for oil companies and hedge fund managers, and corporate jet owners. >> reporter: the president says the august 2 deadline to raise the nation's borrowing limit is not arbitrary, but some lawmakers are skeptical by the deadline set by the treasury department. >> dealing with the debt and deficit problem is far more important than meeting some artificial date created by the treasury secretary. >> reporter: republicans also say any tax increases are deal breakers. and in their own news conference said that president obama is not doing his job. >> he has got to satisfy a whole bunch of special interest groups that live off the federal government. and frankly we have to end that. >> and back to the school home work discussion here. president obama also warned lawmakers today that if they don't make more progress this week on deficit reduction they may need to skip next week's recess and keep working. and home sales rebounding

from a poor april. they report that pending home sales increased by more than 8% nationwide during may. a strong showing by possible buyers in the west and midwest contributed to the gain. sales were at a 7-month low in april, even though buyers can back out of the deal. contract signings are seen as a good indicater as to where the housing market is headed. and dealing with the massive debt crisis today, the greek parliament passed measures to get a bailout from the european union and the monetary fund. that brought protests from the streets of athens, saying that the government is balancing the books on the backs of the poor. however it was go for investors, the dow was up 72, the nasdaq added 11 points. and republican presidential candidate bachmann hitting several cities in south carolina, crowds greeted her on the tour today.

in charleston, she said that media talkers are trying to form a clash between her and former governor sarah palin. >> they want to see two girls come together and have a mud fight. and i wouldn't give it to them. because i have great respect and add admiration for the governor, i appreciate her and wish her well. >> she says that the market is quite open and can work with all candidates. and an fda panel today voted to stop the use of the breast cancer drug avastin. the panel says the drug, which is made by south san francisco group is not effective and has more risks than benefits. the decision was made despite protests by cancer patients and doctors who want the drug to remain available. why should a woman in europe or 86 other countries be permitted to get this drug for breast cancer, but not in the united states? i believe the lives of women

could be in the balance, they could actually die. >> the decision means patients who want to keep take the drug soon will have to pay for it out of their own pocket, insurance will no longer cover it. and the 2010 census is complete, but many are not happy with the results because they could lose quite a bit of money, about 4,520,000,000,000 in federal aid is at stake here, or about 500,000 per person, dozens say it is not right. the budgets have become very tight, and cities are more desperate for the federal dollars. and a report showing the rash of gasoline thefts in concord in the past few weeks, people e-mailed to say somebody took gas from cars parked down the street. they say thieves targeted several areas, including the dana estate, crystal ranch, peach place and florida drive and meadow lane. >> first of all, i noticed that

the -- hose was cut, because i left the hose out a little bit so i could water the roses. and then, there was -- yeah, they didn't put the cap back on. >> the man we just spoke to said he didn't call police because he didn't know what they could do for him. police did not receive reports of gas thefts yet they say. and starting friday, tolls will rise for all eight bridges that span the bay to help to pay for earthquake retro fitting. the toll for the big rigs will jump from 11.25 to 6.75. the toll applies to the bay bridge, san mateo among others. truck tolls also will rise on the golden gate bridge on friday, the price of big rigs will go from 15 to 22, that wouldn't be the end of it. one year, the truck toll will climb to 30 on the golden gate

bridge. and antioch's police chief to be named top cop after the retirement of police chief hokge, he will be pointed on friday. and an update on the oil spill, the fire department says that cleanup efforts wrapped up last night, what you see here is video we took earlier today. you can see crews are busy, working on an ongoing construction project, but it is back open for activity. about 4 guilt or 4 gallons of diesel fuel spilled. they don't know the source of the spill. and a boat turning over off the coast of san francisco, rescue crews found the three boaters on a life raft, one went to the hospital with hypothermia, the others were not hurt. it appears the boat tipped over

when the 270 crab pots on board shifted. >> well, we just -- rolled a load of gear, shifted on the deck, the pilot took a -- it rolled. couldn't come back. >> the coast guard is working with the crew to try to raise the boat. authorities say they're trying to stop fuel leaks. and air traffic slowing at jfk airport this morning. that is because of well, turtles. 150 diamond back champions crawled out. looking for beaches to lay the eggs. that meant moving the flights to other runways, causing delays for about 30 minutes. the turtles come out in late june and july to lay the eggs. >> all right, the big question on the weather, are we done with the rain? >> yes, we're done with the rain, the big change from yesterday to today. we had extremes like this, the whole winter.

that is where we're going, wet yesterday, record rain, now we're going to very, very warm to high temperature temperatures. outside, a few clouds out there. you can see them out here, a little bit of low clouds, fog, the other, what is left out here towards hayward, more of what is left of the low clouds. the clouds hanging from the weather system that came through here yesterday. and presented us with over an inch of rain in parts of the bay area, oakland, specifically. record rainfall really throughout the bay area and the big record of course 1849, back to san francisco. that was the most rain they ever saw on the 20th of june in san francisco. gold rush, 1849? those records go back further than any record news the state of california. so that is the biggest you will find. when you break a record like that, big deal. morning fog tomorrow, mostly sunny, temperatures going way up. warm around here, temperatures in the 90s, low hundreds in the hot spots as we go into the holiday weekend. the fire danger will be up.

we have had a lot of rain, the up shot to all the rain is you shortened the fire season, basically shortened it by about a month. that is great news. you know last year at this time we had big fires to this date. but we are so moist outside right now with the inch of rain, plus we are in pretty good shape as we go into the very dangerous fire area. forecast, overnight lows in the 50s, fog back tonight, as far as mountain view, red wood city. clearing tomorrow afternoon. let's look at the climates, out in the bay -- out at the beaches in the 50s, mid-60s, low 70s, out to lafayette, orenda, but warmer than today, today's temperatures warmer by about five degrees or 10 since yesterday. and today, they rock it up. warmer spots tomorrow, the mid- 80s towards antioch and brentwood. so when i come back we'll look specifically at the forecast for your city. because it is a big holiday

weekend. and some of the numbers inland, they push at the 90-degree mark. we talk about that as well. low quality danger, i'll see you back here in about 15 minutes. and now to breaking news, happening on one of the bay area bridges, chopper 12 at the scene here, you see rescue crews here on the san mateo bridge. we understand they're trying to rescue a person from the water. we know at least two agencies are involved here. one is the coast guard, second it is the alameda county sheriff's department. now from this picture i can't tell if we're looking at the san mateo end or the hayward end. but looking at the traffic i think we saw it moving pretty well as the chopper shot tightened. i see a person in the water, he will be pulled up by the rope here. looks like there is a line extending down into the water and rescue crews standing up above the bridge. i can't really even begin to

. more now on our breaking news from the hayward side of the san mateo bridge, what you are looking at here are rescue crews trying to pull a man -- and actually it looks like they may have actually pulled him now from the water. i believe that is him in the middle of the boat. they were just taking the rescue tire off of him. we're getting new information here. from what we understand at about 4:35 the man you see in the middle of the boat was driving a red ford escort. and pulled off to the side of the road there on the san mateo bridge, jumped on his hood, then in the water. at this point we have no idea

why he would have done that. but again you have been watching the rescue live. they later pulled him out, then in the rescue boat and possibly are taking him to shore. we're continuing to work on the story as we get more information. but this kind of gives you the perspective of the traffic situation there. it looks like at least a couple of lanes on the eastbound side of the bridge, and as we pan out here you can see a couple of lanes are closed. that will definitely cause a big backup there on the eastbound lanes on the hayward -- the san mateo bridge. excuse me heading towards hayward. as we get more information we'll bring it to you. but you may want to stay away from the san mateo bridge for at least the next half hour or so because of this serious traffic backup. and a police shootout on san francisco city streets. when and where the shooting happened as well as what police found with the suspect, causing concern for investigators and residents tonight.

ktvu's david stevenson has more from san francisco to explain. >> reporter: well i just got off the phone with san francisco general hospital. and we have learned more details on the suspect in the shooting on this block, happening close to a school in summer session. >> my officers are fired upon, they will shoot back. >> reporter: the video here shows the aftermath from the stretch of golf street in san francisco. that is where police say they tracked down the person to the garage at the normandy apartments. he was wanted for multiple charges, including resisting arrest. he fired an assault weapon earlier this week. >> as the officers came on scene it appeared the suspect was leaving the driveway. the officers engaged the suspect in an attempt to arrest him. >> reporter: police say he fired a handgun at two plain clothes officers. >> the officers returned fire, striking the suspect, the suspect then crashed. lost control of his vehicle, crashed across the street. >> reporter: the officers were

not hit but the suspect was wounded by the police gunfire. the bullet holes marked the window of the honda he was driving. investigators say an ak-47 was found on the car's floor. >> we heard one person shouting at another. and the gunfire. the gun battle took place just across the street from the prep school. the administrators say no students witnessed it, but the neighbors heard it. >> i am worried because i am not used to this having problems, this used to be a quiet neighborhood. >> reporter: a police photographer used a map to chart it from above. they tell me that the man is in critical condition tonight. the shooting is under investigation by the homicide unit and the internal affairs division. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson ktvu. and now for some developing news into the ktvu news

roomment we have just learned that the owner of a fairfield mini mart attacked by the robbers died of an irregular heart beat after the assault. they used the pepper spray on the man before robbing him on travis boulevard and north texas street. and the italian consulate and his brazilian wife were charged with keeping a woman as a slave. they lured her from brazil, saying the u.s. law didn't apply to them because they were with the government. this dispute they say is because of a scheming woman who wants to stay in the united states. and san jose police looking at kidnappers, robbing an elderly woman. we have photos to show you, officers say the victim was forced into a vehicle outside

the wal-mart on story road. she was taken to a bank, forced to take out money. officers say the men may have pulled a similar crime a week later in las vegas after this incident. and the cruise ship arriving in san francisco in the middle of sharp concern from health officials. the ship has had two virus outbreaks. the federal officials plan to look at the cleaning of the ship, to make sure it is safe for the next trip to alaska. and a new addition to the aquarium, getting a lot of take place, not because she is just cute. she was found on a california beach and made an amazing turn around. ktvu's robert honda has more. >> gasia mikaelian there was a lot of excitement here at the aquarium. around the exhibit here, people hope to have appreciation for the sea otters and the overall health of the ocean.

a rescued pup is now the newest star at the aquarium. at nine weeks old she is the youngest ever to be put on exhibit here, along with her substitute mother, joy. >> they have a very sweet quality about them. they're so carrying, just -- their little paws, when you clean them, very loving. >> reporter: the comfortable atmosphere hides the drauma of the pup's short life so far. she was rescued by fish and game two months ago, just a day old weighing two pounds, she didn't respond. now through all the care through the staff, she is enjoying the warmth and comfortable atmosphere of humans. >> she is learning about fish, swimming around, working with visitors. that is just amazing to watch. it changes her. >> reporter: what type of personality does she have? >> well, for a little pup, she

has guts. >> reporter: they hope it shows how they maintain the eco system as well as problems such as ocean pollution that threatens the otter population. >> we're still very concerned off the southeastern coast here. it is not moving like we expected it to. >> reporter: the pup has not been named. the aquarium says while she wouldn't be able to live in the wild, she will be moved to another facility in about five months. live at the aquarium, robert honda ktvu. and facebook, what the man is doing now who claims he owns half the company. and sitting at the concord naval station, what this is next. and just six years ago, news corp bought myspace for more than 500 million. wait until you hear how much it sold for today. it is not even close to the same ballpark
