good morning, thank you for joining us it is friday, july 1st i'm pam cook. gorgeous day yesterday but i think it's supposed to heat up. let's check in with the expert steve paulson. >> we have clear skies. the coast is clear and temperatures will warm up. i don't think it will billion anything extreme but we will recover 20-degrees from tuesday. look for upper 80s and low 90s inland. here is sal. steve, traffic is doing well on highway 4 if you are coming up to the willow pass grade you can see traffic is wide open for your drive over to concord. also this morning the traffic is moving well on interstate 880 in both directions. northbound and southbound. if you drive through marin county or take public transit there is big problem with the golden gate transit ferry. let's go live to claudine wong to explain more why some

commuters may be out of luck. claudine. >> reporter: sal, there is a strike officially under way. we are at the larks purr ferry terminal and these gates are down. they will all be closed today because of a one-day strike. the district made the decision yesterday after the union issued a press release start strike. ticket takers are striking for one day as they plan to replace those workers with ticket machines. word began to spread yesterday and people started making other plans. >> pride means i'm going to to stay home and make it work out tomorrow. >> reporter: the district told us they have been in association with the ticket takers union for month. the contract with its workers expired at midnight

preponderate district says this -- >> the ticket machine is right there. bart runs an incredible system on bart ma means. we are not happy about that. we are not happy that is the direction we need to go. >> all right again no ferry service from marin county. major cut backs a the the san jose fire department ahead of a hot and dry fourth of july weekend. that is the latest cut tied to san jose any given day. they will be out of service in san jose's four stations. they are raising concerns inside and outside the fire department. >> response times increase. fire intensity goes and so upon arrival our firefighters will be forced with greater workload. >> that is not good for

anybody. especially right now. >> there will be no reductions in staff on sunday and monday due to the extreme fire danger. there are other fire department cut backs taking place today. fire works are going on sale today in five bay area cities. one of them is gilroy where the stands went up a few days ago. clover dale, roe neck park, and union city are on the list. they are among the handful of bay area cities where they are legal. fire works are illegal in oakland and anyone caught with them can be fined up to $1,000. the oakland police department is setting up an anonymous stipline for people to report any illegal fire works. people with drop off the fire works. you can find a list of those collection sites on our website it's all under the right now section at ktvu.com. berkeley school board is taking action to reduce the number of guns showing up on high school campuses. the plan includes increasing the number of police officers and security guards on campus. there will be be tighter screening for all school visitors. the board decided against installing metal detectors saying they are castly and inefficient. police have seized half a dozen guns this year alone. there is a set back in the treatment of injured giants fan bryan stow. stow's family said brian was scheduled to have a shunt put in his head to relieve some of the pressure. however his fever spiked and he was put back on antibiotics. stow is in serious condition at san francisco general hospital.

three months after he was beaten outside dodger stadium. happening now pg&e crews are fixing a small gas leak in san francisco. that work is taking place on holly oak near silver avenue. thigh have been out thins there since 1:45 this morning. it may have been cause by a city group ever. that work should be done within the next half air. an internal investigation found utility contractors and workers may have falsified infection reports on under ground electrical vaults. the san jose mercury news reports as many as 14 inspectors failed to check dozens of areas. all right 4:36 is the time

well skies are clear. temperatures will be in the 70s- 90s. you don't have to worry about fog on the coast. temperatures continue to warm up. global warming could shrink northern california's wine country by half in the next 30 years. that is a result of a new study released yesterday by researchers at stanford. the study says the number of hot days reaching 95 degrees or higher is expect to jump in the next 30 years. right now grape growers enjoy cooler temperatures. california's wine industry brings in $16.5 billion a year. a man accused of sneaking on a virgin american flight is dew in court tea. hearts say the man a nigerian born u.s. citizen made it on the plane with an expert -- d he was questioned. then he was caught trying to --

>> oakland police say they have made an arrest in 40% of homicide cases this year. they have put dozens of officers on the streets specifically to build trust with the community. oakland city council approved a new budget last night after hours of -- the budget calls for rehiring 22 laid off police officers. it also spares libraries and avoids fire station closures. the spending plan is -- revisions could be necessary if the deals don't go through. now that the governor has signed the states new bucket the witting game is again. the budget includes no new taxes and instead assumes california will make an extra $4 billion in rev new this year -- revenue this year all due to

an improving economy. more cuts will occur if that money doesn't come in. the u.s. senate has canceled its plan time off for after the fourth of july. senate majority leader harry reid says work needs to be done on the budget so the u.s. government does not default on its debts on august 2nd. there is no indication that republicans and democrats are making any progress in resolving their biggest stumbling block. tax hikes and spending cuts are needed. republicans say they will defeat anything that includes higher taxes. a leading electronics company wants to keep apple product from entering the united states. samsung wants the ban on apple ipad and iphone devices coming into the u.s.. samsung filed a complaint saying apple violates several of its patents. a private equity firm will be the lead bitter in a court

welcome back to the morning news. time now is 4:51. this is police video on police stakeouts. he's an 11-year-old boy. police say they caught him in the act breaking into a dodge caravan and this is not his first run in with the law. he's been arrested for robbery in the past. the man admitting to stealing ballots from the san francisco polling place is facing a delay in his sentencing. 51-year-old carl bradford stole the elections while working at a polling place set up inside of a garage. he later accepted a plea deal but delayed his sentencing yesterday when he asked to be sentenced by the judge that accepted his plea deal. he believes the other judge is

intimidating him. the sentencing is set for july 11th. an adult softball league is scrambling to reschedule their games. damage is estimated at $25,000. games are being canceled or rescheduled for almost 100 teams that play in napa's adult summer softball league. there is another lockout in pro sport this morning. nba owners locked out their players after the two sides could not reach an agreement. they remain far apart on just about every major issue from the salary cap to revenue sharing. the long expected lockout puts this years pro basketball season in jeopardy and comes as pro football tries to end its own labor dispute. a growing number of major league baseball parks including the san diego padres are
