good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> hello again, i'm heather holmes. hot and getting hotter. three days ago it was raining here in the bay area but today we are baking in some long- awaited summer heat. debora villalon is live in walnut creek with more. >> reporter: we're at heather farms park and the fountains are about the coolest thing going. the public pool just closed. otherwise no doubt people would still be in it. >> come out here, it got hotter. >> reporter: ariana and her family drove inland seeking the heat and the swim day. >> i'm with my family, my dad, my mom, my grandma, my uncle, everyone. >> reporter: the needle sat at 39 degrees poolside at midafternoon. but that's in the shade at 93 degrees. even hotter in the sun. across the park we found no complaints. >> happy birthday. >> reporter: baby keith turned 1 today. his parents staked out a shady

[ laughter ] >> reporter: heat advisories issued today were cancelled when it turned out milder than expected. but they are back on for tomorrow in santa rosa, concord, livermore and san

jose. meteorologist mark tamayo is here to tell us about the triple digits. >> we'll have more triple digits into the second half of the weekend. as for today, parts of the bay area actually cooled off a bit. but those microclimates really resurfacing. you can see the range from 63 in pacifica but inland a completely different story. 98 degrees in livermore, morgan hill 95, san jose at 87. as far as that heat advisory, this will be reissued for tomorrow beginning at 12:00 lasting until 9 p.m. mainly for all the areas shaded in red here and especially targeting the inland spots. projected highs in these areas will be from the low 90s to 102 degrees. coming up, we'll highlight the grow group that will be topping 100 degrees and the changes for the 4th of july. east palo alto is about three hours from its first-ever 4th of july holiday weekend fireworks show. some city leaders say despite budget difficulties, coming together as a community

sometimes means more than saving a buck. mike mibach reports. >> reporter: it is an american tradition. celebrating america's independence. >> doing our parade. >> reporter: and in east palo alto, not only was there a parade today. , there was a party a festival from barbecue to bounce houses, face-painting to relaxing family time. >> in order to stay together, we have have events like this to bring us all together as one. >> reporter: at a time when a number of cities in the bay area have said no way to fireworks or other celebrations this 4th of july, this city, the city of east palo alto said it's family before finances. >> even if we're short on money, that's no reason for not getting people together. >> reporter: the councilman said the city spent $7,500 on the parade and festival but the cost of tonight's fireworks show $18,000 paid for not by the city but community sponsors.

and in a 2.5-square-mile community often known more for crime, city leaders say the lesson is pride and patriotism. >> we as a city struggle to become a city. we're a fairly young city and we know what it's like to survive and to struggle and try to improve the community. and in some ways, that's what the country is. >> i enjoy living here. >> reporter: and that's why marie henrik held two flags watching the parade today, a city of east palo alto flag. >> i'm glad to be independent. >> reporter: and the american flag. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2news. san francisco police are on the lookout for anyone using or selling fireworks. fireworks are illegal in san francisco. violate cores face thousands of dollars in fines -- violators could face thousands of dollars in fines and jail time. fireworks aren't just against the law, they're also dangerous. nationwide, more than 12,000 people are hospitalized from fireworks-related injuries this time of the year. we have an interactive map set up on our website of the places where you can watch

president of oaksterdam university. >> the science is completely in favor of medical marijuana more and more scientists have been coming out, more and more people know that it works. >> reporter: in the memo, the term those who knowingly facilitate such activities, casts a wide net for prosecution perhaps even local elected officials who write laws that favor or tax cannabis. >> we are going to continue to do what we believe is within the law. >> reporter: he says it's a departure of president obama's hands off approach to medical marijuana. >> i think the times and politics are changing. there is a presidential election coming up. >> reporter: the police chief says the memo is not aimed at patients or caretakers. >> i think this member snow to prevent people from engaging in activity and also profiting from having these farms. it says state and local ordinances are not a defense. >> reporter: what's unclear if this is just a policy statement or the start of a new campaign to shut down marijuana dispensaries.

live in oakland, i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel news. oakland police have identified one of two men shot to death within hours of each other. investigators say 29-year-old russell thurman, jr., was killed when two gunmen started firing on men before 10:00 last night. three hours later a mile away, another man was fatally shot on international boulevard. there are no arrests in either case. authorities say they will take dna samples to try to identify one of the six people killed in last week's accident between a semi truck and an amtrak train in nevada. the nevada highway patrol says the body was burned beyond recognition. the five other victims have been identified. 58-year-old fran knox and her 18-year-old granddaughter were long-time morgan hill residents. the "san jose mercury news" says they moved to nebraska four years ago. there are new questions about pg&e's handling of documents in the san bruno pipeline disaster. the "san francisco chronicle"

reports pg&e held back a key document for two weeks before turning it over to federal investigators. it concerned a leak on the line in 1988. pg&e interviewed employees about whether it was on a seam on a pipe that was said to be seamless. the ntsb warned the utility the handle of that document violated federal rules. in a statement, pg&e's says it is committed to cooperating. uc students may see their tuition go up again as the university system tries to find ways to make up for funding cuts in the state budget. uc officials say they will ask the board of regents to consider a future 9.6% tuition hike at its next meeting this month. that would add about $1,000 to the current tuition of nearly $12,000. it will come on top of an 8% increase approved for this fall. president obama again today pushed to end tax breaks for the wealthiest americans in his

weekly address. >> if we choose to keep those tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, or for hedge fund managers and corporate jet owners, or for oil and gas companies pulling in huge profits without our help, then we'll have to make even deeper cuts somewhere else. >> republicans insist they won't approve any plan that raises taxes but the president said today nothing should be off limits when it's spending programs or tax loopholes. the parties are working toward a deal to raise the nation's debt limit by august. coming up, the extensive search today on the bay. for the first time we hear from the pilot whose plane went down near sausalito. charlene wittstock in a catholic ceremony. the 33-year-old bride wore armani with a five-yard train. the groom as you see there a military uniform. celebrity guests included naomi campbell. the couple will honeymoon in the bride's home country of south africa. same-sex couples are celebrating in rhode island. the state's governor signed into law today a bill legalizing civil unions. rhode island is now the fifth state in the nation to allow the unions. the law will also provide same- sex couples with tax breaks, healthcare benefits and more inheritance rights. opponents say the law will eventually lead to legalization of same-sex marriage. a lesbian couple is at the heart of an alleged marriage scam at camp pendleton in southern california. one of the women is a marine corporal who admits she married a heterosexual male marine corporal so she and her female civilian partner could live together off base. the civilian woman in the relationship then married another male marine and checked

spousal benefits. the lesbian couple said they married the straight men because they couldn't marry each other. the three marines now face a year in military prison for fraud. we are getting new video of the confrontation between greek authorities and activists over efforts to bring humanitarian aid to gaza past an israeli blockade. >> your mothers don't want you to hurt us. >> or your wives don't want you to hurt us. >> three dozen activists including several from the bay area tried to leave athens yesterday. greek commandos though turned the vessel back. activists say they will try again next week. >> i'm feeling extremely happy because i wanted to be sure the people of gaza would know that we made a movement toward them. >> tonight the captain, 60-year- old american, is under arrest facing a felony charge of endangering passengers. bay area supporters say most of the activists remain on board that boat. at this hour salvage crews are still searching for an

amphibian plane that crashed near sausalito. as allie rasmus reports, the search won't be easy. >> reporter: a team of divers spent the morning looking for a end plane. they came up empty-handed and then move it a next spot. >> it's a needle in a haystack. >> reporter: a challenging search that became a saturday afternoon spectacle for people along the waterfront in sausalito. some of the people here watched this plane sink in the water yesterday and captured it on camera. in this amateur video it looks like the plane is trying to take off. >> it was floating along, wobbling up and down on the waves. >> reporter: then it tips over. >> it was just a wave hit it from the side. the plane nosedived first into the water. >> reporter: the pilot says he never intended to take off. he just wanted to cruise the shoreline in his plane. he had the windows down and he says a wake from a nearby ferry

washed over him. >> the wave came over the bow. >> reporter: what was going through your mind? >> no big deal. i was angry at the ferry boat. >> so it should have nosed over onits back and if that's the case, the plane is going to be exactly where it struck the bottom. >> reporter: but if it sank right side up? >> then the 5.3 knot ebb early this morning could have pushed it as far as the golden gate bridge. >> reporter: tim parker says the visibility under water is just six inches. he says the search could take days and since it involves a privately owned plane, the pilot has to pay for it. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. a stolen sailboat is back with its owner and the suspected thief in custody. the owner of ocsc sailing tells us the 25-foot sailboat was taken from the berkeley marina last night. berkeley police later spotted the suspect carrying a three

gallon gas can from the vessel. as you can see, the abandoned sailboat got stuck on the rocks when the tide went out. high tide this afternoon freed it undamaged. >> those pictures of the bay look very inviting right now. the water looks great especially with these hot temperatures. mark? >> yeah. the hot weather pattern will stick around. a few days ago we had significant rainfall and cold numbers in the bay area, complete reversal setting up already for this weekend. right now we still have patchy fog to talk about as you can see mainly south of pillar point right around half moon bay, closer to pescadero but more of a northerly breeze. we'll clear out the fog bank overnight into early sunday morning. we have clear skies over san francisco bay and a look outside we can show you a little haze out there. san francisco currently in the lower 60s right around 63 degrees. so parts of the bay area actually cooled off today. but the inland spots really soared. you can see those 90s right now. current numbers in fairfield 94. hayward 74. san jose 81. and there's that 63 showing up in san francisco.

forecast headlines for tonight, we have this, mostly clear skies, some patchy fog at the coast, sunday and monday, sunny skies and hot numbers inland. next week fog returns and with that, temperatures cool off. first thing tomorrow morning, mostly clear skies, some mild numbers mainly in the 50s to the 60s for fremont and mountain view and san jose right around 62 degrees. high pressure continues to build in and strengthen from the desert southwest. and we had more of a northerly flow develop and with that more sunshine even for the coast. once again, we have that heat advisory posted for a good portion of the bay area. mainly away from the water for tomorrow. and then for the 4th of july, we are going to cool things off about 3 to 6 degrees as we have the stronger onshore breeze but still, we are going to have hot numbers inland. the inland numbers in the mid- to upper 90s. whenever you get that high that builds in that traps the pollutants with that, we have poor air quality. so "spare the air" day tomorrow. at least good air quality for the north counties and also for the coast and central bay.

but unhealthy for the sensitive groups for the eastern district and the santa clara valley. the forecast model all sorts of colors to show you for tomorrow afternoon ranging from the lower 70s coastside upper 90s inland. and then you can't take out that violent shade there. back up to a triple-digit territory. here's a look at the numbers. santa rosa 97. fairfield 98 degrees. 102 degrees in brentwood. livermore 100. san jose 93. fremont right around 90. san francisco today only in the 60s. tomorrow we are going to go with 82 degrees. here's a look ahead. your five-day forecast. a little bit of some cooling into monday for the 4th of july. still warm to hot. temperatures spike for tuesday. from you tired of the heat by then tuesday heather and ken, looks like we'll cool off later in the period for wednesday and thursday. >> thank you. thousands are celebrating this 4th of july by hitting the homes have. officials say squaw valley saw

record-breaking 800" of snow this season. and while that's unusual, visitors are not complaining. >> i think it's fabulous. we get to go to the beach tonight at lake tahoe and ski during the day and first time i have ever skid in the summer. >> we came us because it's crazy. look at all the snow. >> nothing like skiing in shorts. officials say the last time it was open on independence day was back in 1999 in squaw valley. we are following some developing news in oakland right now. police were called to 62nd avenue and hayes street an hour ago. you can see from these pictures the street is closed. and officers are marking multiple bullet casings found in the street. we do not have any word of any injuries from this shooting. oakland police tell us they are still investigating and right now they don't have any further information it provide us but when we get it we'll pass it on. people in alameda county with busy preparing what they hope is a delicious world

record and it's all for a good cause. organizers at this year's alameda county fair have been working all day in an attempt it make the guinness book of world records for the largest hamburger. it's made up of more than 600 pounds of meat, 100-pound bun and more than 100 pounds of trimmings. after it's weighed, the burger will be cut up and sold for 99 cents a bite and a portion of the sales goes to the county food bank. >> it's great for our bay area. it's great for the alameda county fair that we're able to have this world record attempt here and on top of that, it's great for the alameda county community food bank. >> now, the current guinness recordholder for biggest burger, it weighed 590 pounds. >> go, alameda county! it may be the perfect time to head to some of the bay area's museums. the certain group of people of getting free admission this weekend. it's really delicious, mom.
