more details after this forecast. and the coast guard is now involved for the search of seven men from california. the men were on vacation when their fishing boat captized on the sea of cortez. eric rasmussen talked to family members about the search. >> reporter: now the coast guard says they have the capability to immediately drop in to try to rescue the men. several sources confirmed les yee did not survive. some who were rescued called home to tell others what happened. >> he said once you jumped off the boat which had lights, he said you couldn't see more than 3 feet in front of you. so when you were in the water, unless you were in the vicinity

of someone you had no idea where you were. >> reporter: donald is the son- in-law of a man who is still missing. >> find my father-in-law, please. >> one of the greater access that it has, the back end can open so you can have people standing at the back end as we're searching. >> reporter: on its website it says all further trips have been cancelled. the task force says its business license has been suspended since 2001 for failure to file tax returns. but in an e-mail it only told channel 2 we are devastated by this tragedy. every effort is being made to assist in the search. our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the families. today i talked to the wife of another man who has already been rescued. she says some of them are staying in a hotel to wait to

see if divers track down some of their important belongings like keys, visas and passports before they make their way home. we are following developing news in san francisco where a broken water main flooded a home and a business in the mission district today. this video came back to our newsroom just about 30 minutes ago. crews are cleaning water and mud from 21st street. the city's public utilities commission says the 12-inch water main ruptured at about 2:30. photos set in from an alert viewer show a stream of water flowing down the stream. residents can expect to have low water pressure until about 10:00 tonight. berkeley police are asking the public to keep an eye out for a bicyclists who hasn't been seen since saturday. anthony mike martin's cell phone on saturday in berkeley. martin's friends are afraid that the cyclist may have been fatigued and ended up in some

type of accident. martin's girlfriend told the media he may have been fatigued from fasting. about an hour ago a napa county official told ktvu three women working at a napa county vineyard reported trouble breathing this morning. news chopper 2 is overhead as the sheriff's office responded about 9:00 p. 9:00 a.m. to big ranch road. the women went to the hospital to be checked out. authorities say chemicals were being applied about 750 yards from where those women were trimming vines which might be responsible for their breathing problems. we spoke with authorities about the chemicals involved and how they are used and we'll have that for you coming up on bay area news at 7:00 on tv 36. the theft of a famous work of art in broad daylight rattled nerves in san francisco today. sal castaneda is live in union

square with a a man who got a firsthand look at the man who walked out of a gallery with the piece of art work. >> reporter: police say this is the most serious of many recent crimes. >> at about 11:45 a man walked in and took a pablo picasso sketch from this gallery. the piece is valued at several hundred thousand dollars. >> it's very unusual to have someone walk into an art gallery, just walk in and grab the painting and walk out. i don't know if this is targeted or if this is a random act. >> reporter: aside from today's brazen theft, union square has been the target of a gang of professional thieves working in groups. >> this is not your normal shoplifting that we're talking about. this is organized people, they call it retail organized crime. these people go out basically having a list of what items they need. so for example, you want a nike sweat suit. you tell the type, what store it's at, these people specifically go there and get

that merchandise. >> reporter: sabrina cohen says that smaller business have a harder time dealing with the crime. >> small business is supporting the city, not only big businesses. we employ people, we have you know we pay taxes like everybody else. >> reporter: now as for the art heist, the men police are looking for is a white man, wearing a dark jacket, white shirt, dark pants, loafers with no socks and dark rim glasses. the cab driver who picked the man up and took him to pier 33 was with two men who appeared to be european. they were speaking german in the back of the taxi. he said that he did not notice the man with anything unusual, he thought it was just a regular fare. a florida jury today found casey anthony not guilty of first degree murder and manslaughter in the death of

her 2-year-old daughter caylee. anthony wept as the verdicts were read in orlando this afternoon. the prosecution claimed that anthony murdered her daughter to continue her carefree lifestyle. >> the best feeling that i have today is that i know i can go home and my daughter will ask me, what did you do today, and i can say i saved a life. >> reporter: anthony was found guilty of four misdemeanor counts of lying to investigators. she could be set free at sentencing on saturday with credit for time served. the president of the university of california says he is afraid -- uc san diego has lost three science professors to rice university

in houston. one tuition hike takes effect this fall. we could see another next year. if your vehicle registration expires this month. the notice to pay is on the way. the dmv says 2.4 million notices for july are going out in the mail. owners will get a 30 day grace period to renew without penalty. officials put registrations on hold until they found out whether the legislature would extend an increase in the vehicle violence fee, that fee hike expired july 1st under the state budget approved last week. a state data base of government salaries is getting bigger, controller chung added wage information for more than 256,000 state employeeless. among the highest paid workers are in the department of corrections. one chief psychiatrist made more than $850,000 in 2009. two surgeons with that department took home more than $700,000 each. there are new concerns tonight along rivers up and down california following a 4th of july drowning on the russian

river. a father of three on a holiday outing with his family was pulled into a deep water current. new at 6:00, ktvu's ken pritchett is in sonoma county where he talked about the dangers you can't see, ken -- >> reporter: take a look at the russian river behind me, look past the boat ramp, across the river toward the bank on the other side. see the water there looks fairly calm, it looks inviting. doesn't look like it's rushing at all. but that is where a 30-year-old santa rosa man was taken under by a strong current. an example of why the sheriff's department is urging caution despite the appearance of the water. looking at the russian river today and it looks lazy, calm. garrett simpson took his family on a kayak. >> it's awesome, warm, very comfortable. >> reporter: there's quite a difference and say the american river royaling with white water. the sergeant ed haener says

looks can be deceiving. >> you look across the surface of the water all you see is a nice calm tranquil top. doesn't look to be moving very rapidly, but it's a the different story down under. >> reporter: the first drowning of the year on the russian river happened in an area of swift current where many people swim. >> drowning is quiet, somebody falling in and falling under water, it's a very silent killer. >> sergeant haener says there have been several rescues on the russian river, and on the american rescues were well above 60 heading into the holiday. the best advice and we saw it often today is the use of life jackets. >> that was good to see, that was smart. that was smart on their part, smart on their parents part to make sure that they were swimming safely. >> reporter: the sergeant says another factor to consider is the clarity of the water. it took dive teams six hours to find that drowning victim and he was located just a short distance from where he went

under in these murky waters. in monte rio, ken pritchett. ktvu has acquired audio of the officer involved shooting on a b.a.r.t. station. today b.a.r.t. said it is reviewing surveillance video in the case. >> that's from the platform at the location, it will be a strong tool in the investigation. >> reporter: san francisco corner tells us the victim is a white man between 40 and 50 years old. but officials are not releasing his name until they can notify his family. a bill giving minors sentenced to live without parol a chance at freedom is moving forward in the state assembly. despite objections from crime victims. the inmate would have to show

remorse by making progress toward rehabilitation and already have served 15 years. the wife of a chp officer murdered by a 16-year-old spoke out against the bill. >> for someone to be able to kill him and then get an opportunity to be free, that's just heartbreaking. it's horrible. it's wrong. >> san francisco state senator leland yee wrote the bill, he told the economy it would affect fewer than 300 inmates. officials believe illegal fireworks are to blame for several fires around the area. one happened on peter's towing on international boulevard in oakland. berkeley firefighters say it appears fireworks started a fire on the roof of a vacant apartment building. the apartments are behind of

the church of christ on easton street. the first started at 9:30 last night near so solano and sasoon. in brentwood, a fire damaged two homes. it started on the roof of one home then spread to a backyard then to a second home. everyone inside made it out safely. we want to take you back right now to breaking news in the east bay we're talking ability about fires. this is an out of control fire, a fire burning near the altamont pass. this is west of i80 near patterson road in alameda county. it's extremely hot out there right now. temperatures in the high 90s, this fire so far has burned more than 200 acres according to calfire of grass since it broke out a little more than an hour ago.

>> you saw one helicopter there moments ago dropping water on to that fire or fire retardant on to that fire. you also can see, well we could see it a moment ago on the bottom of the screen there was an orange industrial next to the burned out area. that is fire retardant that has been dropped to try and stop the fire from growing. presumably it is now over 200 acres. that figure we were first given at about 5:30 and it is now 6:15. so that was 45 minutes ago and the fire is continuing to spread. they are bringing in more manpower as we speak. more firefighters, more bulldozers, more helicopters. there are already two helicopters working the scene. as we get more information we bring it to you. at this point that fire is still out of control. >> and as you can see one more point about the fire -- >> so what came first the chicken or the town? here in san juan batista people are split whether chickens are

minute you go inland we warm up pretty good still at this hour. 88 san jose, low 90s the high in san jose this afternoon. livermore now checking in right about 95. 93 in concord and over the north bay. temperatures not bad at all. 82 in napa, 85 for santa rosa. by tomorrow a few degrees of cooling every day. into the weekend, and we'll be quite comfortable in many spots for the weekend even a little cool along the coast. you might need a jacket. take a look at the satellite radar here. for the last couple of days you'll be watching that monsoonal coming into the coast. lake tahoe had a severe thunderstorms warning at one point. we haven't seen any in our area. but it will be hanging around for the next day or two. and so we'll be watching those for you. areas south of monterey as well as san benito county may see just a little bit of the clouds cover pulling in on the afternoon. so we'll be making sure if anything will occur there. we're going to wake up to

patchy fog. the clouds, partly cloudy skies. afternoon sunshine but temperatures will be a little bit cooler. widespread 60s and 70s for the bay area. inland areas 80s back into the 90s in some cases but not too bad. overnight lows tomorrow morning starting out very similar to where we started this morning. we're talking 89 degrees in areas right around sonoma. 85 in napa as well as santa rosa. widespread low 90s, concord, 77 in san leandro. upper 70s in areas right around oakland. widespread 80s for the santa clara area. we're talking 88 degrees for santa clara then along the coastline upper 60s, 68 expected for san francisco. in the extended forecast, dropping those temperatures as we move closer to the weekend. then into the weekend again, a little bit cool maybe for the cost. maybe a little below average for this time of year. but low 80 #-s for the inland spots we're finally getting a break. >> nice to get off of it,. coming up next here, more
