napa. so those all are cooler directions. a lot of thunderstorm activity popping up over the sierra. that should move to the east as we get a southwesterly direction. we've been waiting for two days for that to come in. an on shore breeze, it will be cooler. highs inland especially lake county or maybe towards vacaville or some areas we'll still be in the 90s but i think a lot of locations now concord, morgan hill, upper 80s, santa rosa, napa low 80s. the extended forecast has further cooler taking us into friday and then the weekend. here's sal. steve, right now traffic is going to be okay. but we do have some slow traffic out there. as a matter of fact we have some road work in many areas. this is a look at highway 92 the san mateo bridge. right near 92 and 880 there is some road work you might want to watch out for. also this morning we're looking at the commute on interstate 880. the road work here has been picked up on the lower deck of the bay bridge. still have a lane or two closed

heading eastbound out of san francisco toward oakland. and speaking of oakland, we did have an accident that just popped up on our screen. i'll tell you about that in just a moment. looking at northbound 280 here. that traffic looks very nice. and the south bay commute looks good. new crash westbound 24 at fish ranch road. this crash heading west. again right now it's in one of the lanes they're trying to move it out. we'll keep an eye on that and the rest of the commute you already see a little bit of slowing here and there and that's mostly associated with road work. at 4:31 back to the desk. one man is now fighting for his life following a shooting at a popular east bay hiking trail. it happened last night in pittsburg. park police found the young victim lying on the trail. he'd been shot in the back of the head. it's still not clear what led up to that shooting and police are still looking for suspects. this is the third violent incident on this trail in the

past three months. right now 100 people are without water in lafayette. the problem started when a water main broke around 10:30 last night at the intersection of mt. diablo boulevard and village center. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty is at the scene with what crews are saying about maybe getting this water back on. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. you know they're not giving us a time line just yet, but if you take a look behind me you can see east bay med has been back hire. they dug a really deep hole and they're going down there with the ladder to inspect the pipe that burst. crews tell us this is an eight inch cast iron water main break. what they'll do is remove that section of line that ruptured and replace it so they can turn the water back on. as we mentioned about 100 people in the area around mt. diablo boulevard and village center drive now without water. it happened around 10:30 last night. the water flooded in nearby office building and flowed down

the street into a garage. the homeowner just moved here from seattle and all his moving boxes are water logged. >> i threw my shoes on and looked out the sliding glass door and the backyard was probably five inches deep of water. >> reporter: again, these workers will be out here until they get the pipe fixed. you can tell they're pumping out some water right now. hopefully it won't take too long otherwise we could be looking at a traffic jam for the morning rush hour. i'm sure those hundred folks would like to take showers this morning. live in lafayette. , tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. an elderly woman killed in a crosswalk in what appears to be a freak accident. she died in a collision with a teenage skateboarder. it happened tuesday while she was taking her daily walk to the beach from her home. police say a large truck had stopped for her as she stepped into the bike lane to cross the street. that's when a 17-year-old boy

on a skateboard slammed into her. oddly enough the woman's husband says she'd been afraid of skateboards ever since she was hit in the head by one 15 years ago. >> she was leery of them. tried to avoid them and kept watching for them all the time. we've been together for long i really miss her. >> the teenage skateboarder was not hurt. no charges have been filed, but the santa cruz county d.a. is now investigating. police say it's illegal to skateboard in that area. we are following another pedestrian accident. this one involving an airport shuttle van. that happened on international boulevard near 80th avenue in oakland just before 8:30 last night. now we just checked in with police and we are told that the male victim is in critical condition. one passenger was riding in the van at the time of the accident. some of the bay area men who survived that fishing boat accident in mexico may be heading home this morning.

want to show you video shot by the mexican navy just moments after they were rescued on sunday. the survivors were so exhausted you can see they had to be lifted, carried and lifted into that helicopter. 35 tourists and crew members were thrown from the boat during a violent storm on sunday. they spent 16 hours clinging to coolers and life vests before they were found. seven fishermen from northern california are still missing after that accident. family is waiting for news of their husbands of dublin. the trip was a first for leon an avid fisherman. his family says he's very safety conscious and planned to sleep in his life vest if the weather was bad. >> he's a survivor. so he's tough. they're out there somewhere. >> family members have been working the phones, e-mail and

social networks enlisting the help of politicians to put pressure on the mexican government to continue the search. senator yee says that mexican authorities told him the search would extend beyond 96 hours. well, tonight one of the bay area activists who tried but failed to deliver humanitarian aid to palestinians in the gaza strip will come back home. the u.s. ship the audacity of hope remains in athens, greece. it was turned back by the greek coast guard when it tried to challenge the israeli naval blockage of gaza. 65-year-old henry of berkeley set to return tonight. a judge? marin county is expected to rule tomorrow on accused serial killer josef naso's latest legal request. he says his case is far more complicated than he first thought and now needs legal help to defend himself against four murder charges. earlier he told the judge he wanted to save money and could act as his own attorney.

the former freelance photographer has more than $1 million in assets. we're now hearing that bart might release surveillance video from sunday night's deadly police shooting. bart police say they expect to release the video once all of the witnesses have been questioned and if the san francisco district attorney allows its. about 40 people saw two bart officers shoot and kill a man at the civic center station. bart officers say the man was drunk and armed with a bottle and a knife. today cal train will consider installing cameras on the front and back of its trains. eleven people were hit and killed by cal trains so far this year. the agency says the cameras could help with investigations and provide information to stem the problem. it could also save train conductors from potential lawsuits. if the plan is approved, cal train will begin installing the cameras next month. the frame work for all electronic tolling system on the golden gate bridge could be

decided today. one option for collecting tolls is fast track. others include one time payments at nearby retail stores. license platein voices. and automatic deductions from driver's credit or debit card account. the system could go in place as soon as next year. 4:37 is the time. speaking of the bridge and the commute, let's check in with sal. what's going on for the commute so far, sal? there's a couple things going on. first of all we're going to go outside and see what we can see with some of the -- look at the golden gate bridge. it's pretty foggy. that's one of the things i want to let you know. the fog is out there and the traffic is going to be affected by some of this foggy weather. so use caution as you drive to southern marin, parts of san francisco and also parts of just parts of san mateo county. be careful out there as you drive to this area. also this morning we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza.

right there traffic is going to be effected by -- well, actually it's not going to be effected by the fog but you're going to see some road work on the lower deck of the bay bridge head today this spot if you are driving eastbound. westbound traffic looks good onto that upper deck of the bay bridge. this morning on the san mateo bridge that traffic looks nice. the westbound 92. eastbound 92 getting up to the construction zone at interstate 880 they're picking up road work. watch out for some of that road work there. also this morning we're looking at 280 in san jose northbound. it's off to a nice start. no road work here. 101 traffic looks good. and in oakland westbound 24 -- actually this is on the orinda side on fish ranch road traffic effected by a two car crash that is on the shoulder. eastbound traffic is going to be a little slow because there's only one tunnel open in that direction. at 4:39 let's go to steve. thank you. a lot of low clouds and fog as sal touched on. some is right there.

it's solid along the coast and only going to enhance over the next 24 to 36 hours. some can reduce visibility next to zero. a lot of thunderstorm activity erupting over the sierra nevada. not only from tahoe all the way along the spine down to the southern sierra. that activity should start to move off as we get more of a southwesterly direction on the wind. 50s and 60s. santa rosa 52. san jose in the 60s. livermore in there. concord, fairfield. 57 redwood city. 53 san rafael. west-southwest 22 there you go turbo charge that at fairfield, travis even vacaville with a southwest at 9. i have no idea what concord buchanan says with north at 6. that doesn't make sense. anyway, west-northwest sfo with southwest at napa airport those are all cooler directions. the leading edge of the cooler pattern is beginning to show itself in the pacific northwest. the whole system is going to dig in. another will dig in behind that and that's going to take us into the next five to seven

about six degrees. in less than two hours casey anthony could be a free woman. but her legal troubles are far from over. she's scheduled to be sentenced for lying to police. but legal experts say she will likely get credit for time served and be released. we're now finding out more lawsuits are being filed against casey anthony. the state of florida is filing a motion to tax her for the cost of the investigation and prosecution. and the founder of the texas search group who spent hours looking for caylee anthony is also considering a lawsuit. tim miller says his group spent $112,000 and hundreds of hours looking for the little girl. now miller says their efforts were a waste of time. >> jose's opening statements were caylee was never missing. so why did they call us? why did they put us through all that? >> one civil lawsuit has already been filed. it's from the woman who shares the same name as the made up

nanny that casey said kidnapped her father. the woman says she was questioned by police and is suing for defamation of character. meanwhile there's an online petition underway for a new law to protect missing children. caylee's law would make it a federal offense for a parent not to notify police within 24 hours of a child's disappearance. caylee anthony was not reported missing until one month after she was last seen. almost 250,000 people have signed that petition since it was started on tuesday. this morning president obama meets with congressional leaders at the white house on cutting the federal budget deficit and increasing the u.s. debt limit. at his twitter town hall yesterday the president warned of the danger of not meeting the august 2nd deadline. >> our credit could be downgraded, interest rates could go drastically up and it could cause a whole new spiral into a second recession or

worse. >> house speaker john boehner tweeted during the town hall accusing the president of a record spending bing that left the country deeper in debt. well, the pentagon says it will comply with a federal ruling to immediately end the military's don't ask don't tell policy. that ruling from the ninth circuit court of appeals in san francisco orders the obama administration to immediately end enforcement of the ban on gays serving in the military openly. congress had already voted to repeal the ban and the pentagon is expected to certify the change this summer. well, cal fire is losing an important fire fighting tool just as the fire season gets underway. the agency will no longer have use of the dc10, one of the nation's largest fire fighting jets. the state just canceled its contract with the company that rents out the super tanker because of budget cutsful the jets can carry up to 12-gallons of fire retardant.

most recently it was deploy today help with the arizona wild fires. a proposed bill to abolish california's death penalty gets its first hearing today. state senator hancock offered the bill. it would convert death sentences to life in prison with no parole. california has more than 700 inmates on death row but has executed only 13 since 1978. hancock says taxpayers have spent more than $4 billion on legal fights over the death penalty since that time. well, the man that san francisco police say stole a pikas sew sketch may have been caught on camera. this is video from a surveillance camera near the union square art gallery the day the sketch was taken. police say the man in the video resembles the suspect description and it appears that he has a painting under his arm. now business district leaders say they are moving forward with a building mounted

surveillance camera network. >> it would obviously have to be monitored centrally and we would hope at some point in time police could have the ability to also monitor. >> police say on tuesday morning the man stole the sketch off the wall, walked outside and got into a cab. they are also examining the surveillance video from inside the cab. the 1965 pikas so sketch was being sold for $200,000. anyone with information is asked to call san francisco police. a judge has postponed the sentencing of two men convicted of murdering oakland journalist chauncey bailey. they were supposed to be sentenced tomorrow. but the judge says he needs to hear from grim. now he's the attorney representing the prosecution's key witness. grim told a reporter that his client confessed gunman brusard may have committed a little bit

of fabrication is what he says. grim will appear before the judge on august 12 to explain what he means. the structure of the oakland police department will change starting this saturday. chief anthony beat says it is in response to a spike in crime and a dwindling force. under his plan the current three field operation offices will be consolidated into two. homicide, robbery, assault and the fugitive task force will be consolidated into one major crime unit. motorcycle officers will be reassigned to regular patrol. well, it is atlantis' final launch, but why the last trip to space may not happen as scheduled after all. and a surprising end to a missing person's case. where this bicyclist was found.

welcome back to the morning news. it's now 4:52. and a section of yellowstone national park is closed after a grizzly bear killed a tourist. rangers say the couple apparently surprised the bear and her cubs. rangers believe she was defending her cubs when she attacked. there are signs warning of bear encounters, but this is the first fatal attack by a bear at yellowstone in 25 years. berkeley police have called off the search for a missing bicyclist after he was spotted in the sacramento area alive and well. police say a hotel clerk saw 29- year-old anthony mike martin in roseville on tuesday. still unclear why he left the bay area. martin's girlfriend reported him missing on saturday when he didn't return home from a bike ride. police also originally thought he may be injured because his cell phone was found along tunnel road. santa clara county vector

control will try to get rid of mosquitoes that may carry the west nile virus. they will fog an area of sunny vale roughly bordered by south grape avenue, south wolf road and cascade drive and that will start at 11:00. now the fogging comes after some mosquitoes collected from the area tested positive for the west nile virus. well, the final space shuttle launch is set for tomorrow morning, but it could be put on hold by bad weather in florida. atlantis is on the launch pad right now and could stay there through tomorrow morning's scheduled 8:26 a.m. liftoff. there is a 70% chance of rain and lightning though. slightly better weather is forecast for the weekend. now no matter when the shuttle heads into space, the space and science center will host a launch party. tickets are $10 a person. that's a fantastic place to watch stuff though. all right. sal has a busy ramp in the north bay is blocked.

that's right. a tree came down in santa rosa on the connector ramp from highway 101 south to westbound 12. and they say this ramp is going to be blocked for the next hour. this is a large tree. not a branch, not a twig. this is a large tree trunk is downed blocking this busy connector ramp. just be careful. that's going to be slow on highway 12 in santa rosa. and as you know that's really busy ramp. so it's going to be out of commission for the next hour. we'll be following when they actually clean it up. let go out and take a look at the guadeloupe maze. there was a report of a grass fire underneath where 87 and 280 come together. we were looking at it had the control room check it out. i don't see lights from fire trucks or any smoke at all. they'll be checking it out. it's in this area. reported by someone driving by saw some smoke coming up. hopefully it was nothing. but we'll see. this morning's commute on westbound 80 getting out to the
