burn. there's nothing i can do. >> reporter: relatives of the victim's told us they are in shock. they described the haltons as adventurous and told us the family was flying to yosemite. >> they had a lot of plans for the summer. they traveled many places, they were world travelers. it's just devastating and all four are gone. >> reporter: the faa is investigating from the pilot's experience, to the aircraft. >> we're looking for all the components, things like the weather, things like air traffic control. >> reporter: the national transportation association says the aircraft will be taken to the airport for further investigation. we have more details now,

last night's crash is not the first near watsonville airport. we looked back over the past five years and found two other crashes. in 2006, a pilot ran out of fuel and crash landed in the front yard of a home across the street from the airport. he had minor injuries, no one else was hurt. he had radioed that his plane was on fire and that it was trying to make an emergency landing. harrowing stories of survival and some serious anger from the bay area fisherman returning after their charter boat capsized in mexico. ktvu's debra villalon has firsthand account from the fishermen. >> reporter: they are avid fishermen, experienced boaters but nothing would have prepared them for sinking in the middle

of the night. and they say the captain who could have helped them, didn't. >> reporter: it's emotional for this retired chp officer, the fear and isolation waiting for rescue realizing no distress call was made, he had a life vest but didn't know the fate of his friends. >> we went down there to have a nice time. and it gals me that the whole crew was saved, we lose seven and none of this is our fault. >> the captain, he was just a jackass. >> reporter: survivor lugo is happy to be home. but thinking about his friends hurting him. >> i saw him trying to put his life vest on and i remember

telling him, let's go, let's go. >> reporter: the best life vests on board were taken by the crew, not waking up the men. hanson says it might be a while before he returns to the water, in fact, he says he might sell this boat after the experience. debra villalon. more survivors of that ill fishing trip also arrived home today. we will hear from one of them. including the problem he ran into trying to return to the bay area. casey anthony will stay in jail a few days longer than expected. the young mother was acquitted this week of killing her daughter caylee.

today they changed the date of release to july 17th. that's a week from sunday. she received credit for time served and good behavior. about an hour and a half ago, the san francisco bomb squad gave the all clear after investigating a suspicious package. this happened outside the federal building right outside of golden gate avenue. a man pointed to a backpack an said it was filled with explosives. he also made anti government statements, the bomb squad later determined the bag was harmless. police are now questioning that man who reported the backpack. a judge has ruled that the pittsburg man accused of killing a community leader is not sane to undergo trial. he will be back in court a week from now for a hearing on whether he can be forced to take medication. a judge today denied a

motion against the contra costa -- his attorneys say the charges against him are politically motivated. they are expected to file a second motion to try and dismiss those charges. the santa clara medical examiner today identified a man killed by a caltrain last night. he is 23-year-old palo alto resident clayton carlton. the southbound train hit him about 8:30 p.m. near the churchill crossing. the medical examiner denies to say if he considers the accident a suicide. officers say the injurys to the two victims are not life threatening, investigators are trying to determine if the incident is gang related. santa cruz police are searching for a man who may have committed a sex crime against a 13-year-old boy. the boy told police it happened

at about 8:15 at the municipal wharf outside a public restroom. he told detectives two men approached them and that one of them committed sexual battery. he said both men then ran off. the boy described his attacker as a white man, 25 to 40 years old. average height with short light brown hair wearing a white tank top. police are working with the teenager to develop a sketch resembling the man who he says attacked him. we have the latest on a pot farm bust. sheriff department officials have arrested a man in connection with the marijuana operation. 45-year-old carlos guerrero of mendecino county is facing drug and weapons charges but he has not been charged with killing two people found dead at that marijuana farm. the sheriff's department told ktvu they are waiting for dental records to identify the two victims. a fundraiser is under way at this hour for the campaign to find michelle le.

le's family teamed up with a restaurant in hayward. 20% of today's sales will go toward efforts to find the 26- year-old. ktvu spoke to le's brother. >> the support of people who don't know us, who don't know michelle but somehow her story has touched them is great. and we're just so thankful for the support. >> the fundraiser under way right now goes until the restaurant closes at 10: 10:00 tonight. customers must tell the cashier that they are there for the michelle le fundraiser. the u.s. unemployment rate rose .10 of a percent. the u.s. added 18,000 jobs that's the lowest in months. the glooming news is a blow to president obama. >> today's job report confirms what most americans already know. we still have a long way to go

police are investigating four shootings in east oakland last night that left several people injured. the first happened on 88th avenue. another shooting happened about an hour later on bancroft. the third on international boulevard, and the fourth happened minutes later. we are getting an up close look tonight into the probation supervision of phillip garrido between 1988 and 2009. we're looking at some of the key findings. >> reporter: what we found out

in this confidential report is criticism. a number of points were highlighted. according to the report, home contacts were rare, frequent, positive drug tests and diluted urine samples were ignored. and the officer never confirmed that garrido was registered as a sex offender. while correctly categorizing garrido as high activity. the probation officers checked in on him only 10 or 11 times. the report states, there was an attempted home visit on 1213 1991. six months after jaycee dugard was kidnapped. but garrido cut the visit short saying that he was on his way

to take his wife to work. and it was 5/2/1995. the officer allowed garrido to take a job as a door to door sales man. the northern district of california probation offer came under new leadership office in 2007. the office has remedied it's shortcomings and is currently under strong management. reporting live here in oakland, mike mibach. the man accused of stealing a picasso drawing faces three felony counts tonight. mark lugo was charged with grand theft, being in position of stolen property and second degree burglary. he was caught on this surveillance tape shortly after

the theft. he's accused of taking the picasso drawing off the wall of a gallery on union square then taking off in a cab. martinez police held a blood drive to honor a fellow officer that died of hopkins lymphoma. he had received numerous drug and platelets transfusions. his wife was at the drive today in honor of her husband. >> this is a way to pay it forward. we're very thankful for everybody that donated blood for my husband so he could live long enough to see his children again. >> the martinez police department held a drive for sergeant carter a year ago and plans to continue the tradition with annual blood drives. we're learning more about the fan that died last night after falling at the rangers

game. shannon stone was initially conscious. according to stone's wife, he and his son were quote attached at the hip and they had gone to that game hoping to catch a ball. she also said they actually stopped at a store on the way to the game so that he could buy his son a new baseball game. that accident? texas has a lot -- that accident in texas is raising a lot of questions about baseball park safety. and doctors have been lowering the dosage of stow's medication. this week stow has been moving his legs and opening both eyes. stow suffered severe brain injury when he was attacked after a dodgers game down in los angeles in march.

prosecutors say the son james rafael mitchell beat his girlfriend to death and kidnaped the couples baby. the victim, kelly had a restraining order against mitchell. mitchell testified two other men attacked the couple and then him and he took their daughter to protect her. the flight was moved to a remote area of the airport just before it was set to take off. someone called the hotel in alameda and said it was going to be hijacked. police removed two men from the flight and questioned them for hours. shibad is the son of the governor of a pakistan province. the two say they were

inproperly detained. a young man was injured at a fire. fire crews have stepped up their efforts to clear brush. well it was noticeably cooler today and over now we go to mark tamayo. park i'm looking at that map behind you and looks like there's some serious fog at the coast. >> it will be cooling off the bay area as we head into the weekend. that's the key headline. right now on the maps i can show you this. on live storm tracker 2, there's some clearing. closer to stinson beach. but as far as today there's fog pushing in the bay. just over 2,500 feet up above that fog bank. but the low cloud deck will be

meet with the president. congress is facing an august 2 deadline to raise the $14.3 trillion debt limit or risk a government default. reducing social security benefits is one plan being discussed in the debt ceiling negotiations. the cuts under consideration would reduce the cost of living reductions for social security benefits. the social security administration says that could shrink the average check by $500 over a 10 year period. some economists point out that will force seniors to spend less causing a million dollars loss to the economy in the first year that benefits are cut back. those supporting cuts claim that social security is going broke and within 30 years we won't be able to pay for all of the benefits promised. the house voted today to prevent military chaplains from

performing same-sex marriages. the ninth circuit court of appeals voted to -p stop discharging gay servicemens. several rights groups filled a federal lawsuit aimed at stopping illegal immigration. it would allow police to arrest anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant if officers stopped the person for some other reason. it will also require employees to determine the status of schools to determine if students are in the country legally. more fall out tonight over a hacking scandal in the uk. we told you yesterday here at 5:00 that the british tabloids nudes of tab -- tabloid news

another survivor talking tonight about that fishing boat that capsized in mexico and the problem he faced trying to return home to the bay area. seven other fishermen are still missing and hope is fading with

each passing day. rob roth is at the home of one of those missing members in san ramon. rob. >> reporter: frank, the home of fisherman lee served as a demand center for relatives since the boat went down. this family says that yellow jeep belongs to one of the survivors but he's still too shaken up to come get it. >> reporter: ukigami is home at last. the bus carrying the resident pulled into the station this morning. even the trip home was an ordeal. they planned to drive here in the truck belonging to leslie yee a fellow fishermen killed in the accident. >> not only did we you know have this adventure, but then half way home inside a texaco the truck broke down. we had to leave it down for

another family to pick up. so it's like never ending. >> reporter: he tried to speak about what happened in the water but just couldn't. >> it's pretty tough. pretty tough. >> before he went home to a hot tower, he had this message regarding this seven fishermen still missing -- guarding the seven fishermen still missing. >> find the seven. they are all good people. >> reporter: the boat sank in waters estimated over 200 feet deep, two deep for the coast guard. >> all these men deserve to be brought home. their families deserve to have them brought home. >> reporter: the lee family was concerned that today would be the last day the mexican government would allow the search. but i just spoke to the coast guard and they said the mexican government has asked them to continue the search tomorrow.

when i told the lee family this, they began cheering. rob roth, ktvu channel two news. new developments tonight on the controversial park merced project in san francisco. the san francisco senate delivered enough signatures to deliver to to ballot. it calls for 5,700 new units. many residents say the project will destroy their home. developers say residents will be placed in other homes. antioch police got a call this morning about suspicious activity at a large condominium. officers found several power lines cut and lying on the ground. ten vehicles were damaged when those lines fell. prosecutors said today they are charged a suspect with killing a young san jose man. the suspect is juan carlos

reyez cortez of san jose. he has been behind bars since june 30th when he was picked up on a parol violation. cortez is accused of the stabbing of lee. they accuse the stabbing happened between a fight between two rival gangs. the new policy stems from a case involving two california men who got married in 2008. federal attorneys battle their petition for a giant bankruptcy case. carusel plaza reopened today after a $1.25 million renovation. the project spruced up the

among those supposed to be on the guest list, nicole kidman, striseand. we'll see who shows up. rental costs are rising faster in san jose with san francisco coming in third place. vacancy rates on the west coast fell .2 percentage points in the first two months of the year to 6% in the second quarter down from 7.8% a year earlier. a bay area university is high on the list tonight of pricey colleges. the u.s. department of education based the list on a cost of tuition, room and board, book fees and financial aid. the new school in new york came in first with a net price of $3,900 a year. santa clara university came in second at more than $3,500 a year. st.joseph's university came in third with new york university and north eastern university

rounding out the top five. starting today the price of many cigarettes is going up. altrea group has raised the price of all its cigarettes by 9-cents a pack. marlboro is $7.75 plus a dollar cigarette tax here in california. the voters will be asked to approve an additional $1 tax. australian researchers found that men who smoke for 23 years or more were half as likely to need surgery to repair their hips or knees compared to men who never smoked. but doctors caution that the theoretical benefits to a smoker's joints are far outweighed by the greatly increased risk of cancer and heart disease. angina patients who could not be helped with drugs or

pressure that will move in to the north. for the coast patchy fog. right around the bay some morning cloud cover and a bit of a breeze out there. winds from around 15 to 20 miles per hour. and the inland spots mostly sunny skies but no more than extreme heat. warmest locations inland tomorrow approaching the mid- to upper 80s. here we go with our forecast beginning at 7:00. areas of fog, 55 to right around 60 degrees. by 12:00 some coastal fog. mid-50s to mid-70s. by 3:00 we will increase our -- here is some of the fog pushing back into the bay tomorrow morning. then we will take this into the afternoon hour. the cloud bank pulls back into the shoreline. so keeping it cool for the beaches tomorrow. everybody coming up a few degrees from today's highs.

it appears maria shriver is moving forward after filing for divorce from arnold schwarzenegger. tmz reports the estate is near the home where she lived with arnold schwarzenegger and that the two plan to live near each other to share custody of their four children. just into our newsroom, former first lady betty ford has passed away tonight at the age of 93. she was known as one of the most outspoken first lady.

she also raised awareness on addiction after announcing she had a long battle with alcoholism during the 1970s. her activism would later lead to the formation of the betty ford center. she is survived by her four children. some local communities are -- making sure children have the right tools to success in school. volunteers filled hundreds of backpacks with school supplies to give to low income students. organizers tell us what they're doing is important especially as families try to bounce back from a down economy. >> we think maybe the economy is turning around but a lot of families haven't seen that yet. but we want to make sure the kids start with the things they have that are age appropriate to them. >> organizers say this year's event is the largest in their history. coming up here in just 90 seconds, the family of four killed when their plane crashes into a building shortly after take off.
