saturday, july 9th. we are looking at a bit of a cooldown this weekend, especially compared to last weekend. let's check in with rosemary on what we can expect. hello, rosemary. >> yes, good morning to you! temperatures from five it 10 degrees cooler today than yesterday. that is for inland spots some hopefully that's a nice break for you. we're looking at this cooling trend that will begin today, and last through most of next week. the breeze will be picking up in the afternoon on the coast it could actually be jacket weather. it's going to be a little chilly out there this afternoon, highs ranging from about 60 degrees along the coast to mid-80s for our inland areas. so a nice warm-up for the valley locations. but not bad at all. we'll break it down for you off to a cooler start this morning. we have those numbers as well, coming up. an overnight police search for a suspected gunman in hayward is over. it started last night at the apartments on cypress. investigators say the gunman opened fire on a hayward officer around 10:00. no one was injured.

the man immediately went into hiding somewhere in the complex. the standoff ended before 5 this morning. witnesses say the suspect was transported to the hospital and we are trying to get ahold of police now to get more on his injuries and current condition. some people who live in the complex had to stay outside during standoff. >> it is -- 11-month-old baby outside in the cold is not a good thing. >> several law enforcement agencies were brought in to help police in their search. now about a mile and a half away, a scuffle turned into a stabbing. that happened around 1 this morning at a park lot in a restaurant on b street. authorities rushed several people to the hospital with knife wounds. one person was stabbed severely in the abdomen and is unclear now what caused the fight or if it's gang-related. authorities have a suspect in custody who was also taken to the hospital. happening right now in the streets of san francisco, a walk for a cure. expect to see thousands of women and even some men in pink

this weekend. it's all for the annual avon walk to raise awareness for breast cancer. ali rasmus is live in san francisco, where this weekend's event just kicked off. good morning, ali. >> reporter: good morning, mike. it's not just to raise awareness about breast cancer. the money raised by this two- day walk also helps pay for health care for women who can't afford the treatment. we saw about 2,000 people begin their 40-mile walk five minutes ago. the cause they were out here for, raise money, raise awareness for breast cancer. more than 2,000 people signed up and combined they raised more than $4 million for the cause. we watched as the participants of this walk started their morning with a warm-up. they're going to need it because they have 40 miles to walk from fort mason here in san francisco to madeira, where they'll spend the night at a

campsite, before walking back here to san francisco. each of the 2,000 people walking here today raised $1800 each for breast cancer treatment and research. >> the majority of that money stays in northern california. so it's really nice for people to know that the money they worked so hard to raise is helping breast cancer centers and community organizations they know in their community. >> you're walking next to women three times survivors or going through chemo right now, and there are people along the way thanking you for doing what we're doing, and you just could not do it after seeing it. it's amazing. >> and just five minutes ago we watched as they wrapped up their morning warm-up and opening ceremonies. they were all in front of that stage there, a lot of energy here. now the participants are going to start walking towards the golden gate bridge they will go through sausalito and mill valley and if you happen to be driving through there this morning, in parts of north bay and see lots of people wearing

pink, it's for the san francisco avon walk for breast cancer. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. by changes start this weekend for the police department. earlier this week the chief announced the department will split the city into two geographic areas, rather than them that's also the motorcycle unit will be disbanded so those officers can be put back on patrol. the moves should help the department more effectively use limited resources. budget cuts over the last few years have trimmed nearly 200 officers from the department. east palo alto will offer money for people who turn in their guns today that. buyback starts at 9 a.m. the guns must be unloaded and in the trunk a vehicle. they can be dropped off at the east palo alto government center on university avenue. $100 cash cards will be given out for the first 75 weapons turned in. police release these coaches of two men want in a sexual assault. they approached a 13-year-old

boy outside a relevant room on thursday night in santa cruz. the men are described as being white and between 25 and 45 years old. the death of a baseball fan in texas remains the topic of discussion across the country. at at&t park, fans say the terrible accident reminds them to be cautious when chasing after a foul ball. while fans say catching a souvenir is part of the experience, some tell us they would like to see higher railings to prevent falls. >> if it's closer to us, and we'll reap for it. but if it's to a point where we're leaning over something, no, we stay away from that. >> something new you decided now? >> yes. >> on thursday night in arlington, texas, a 39-year-old rangers fan toppled over the railing trying to catch a ball. shannon stone who was at the game with his 6-year-old son fell 20 feet on to concrete and later died. baseball says it will review safety procedures at all of its

stadiums. stone was a firefighter in the texas city of brownwood. the community along with coworkers held a fund-raiser yesterday for the stone family. the rangers baseball team has also set up a memorial fund in his honor. the oakland a's, who were playing the rangers the day of the fall have, donated $5,000 to that fund. the federal government is admitting parole agents made mistakes in monitoring garrido. the report is 43 pages long and focuses on visits to garrido's home near antioch. home contacts were rare, frequent positive drug tests and submission of diluted urine samples were ignored. the report concludes his supervision was substandard. relatives of the family of four killed in a plane crash are remembering their loved ones this weekend. david and deedee houghton died on thursday with their sons luke and ryan.

office recently released a statement saying a woman has died from her injuries. the announcement was the first in two weeks regarding any deaths related to the storm. the tornado damage is estimated at $3 billion. doctors say a drug resistant and sometimes deadly bacteria has surfaced in at least two san francisco hospitals. the examiner reports san francisco general and california pacific medical center on california street experienced outbreaks recently. doctors say antibiotics are helping breed the stomach bacteria known as c dip. while both hospitals report the patient recovered, it did kill more than 7,000 americans in 2009. a new mother is proving everything is bigger in texas. the woman has just given birth to this little guy, 16 pounds! the newborn is 24 inches tall,

thousands of people have just begun a two-day walk for a really god cause this morning. good morning. the walk for breast cancer is now underway, opening ceremonies started just about an hour ago. the walk will span two days, two counties, and close to 40 miles. ali rasmus joins us live from san francisco. ali. >> reporter: we're at fort mason in san francisco, where organizers are packing up just half an hour ago we watched as a huge group of people, 2,000 men and women, began the san

francisco avon walk for breast cancer. when 2,000 people signed up for the walk, each raised $1800. so the total amount this group participating raised today is about $4 million and that money will go towards breast cancer reach and treatment. the program director series the majority of that money goes to northern california hospitals, non-profits and health organizations. it's an important part of what they do is making sure that the money people spend work so hard to raise goes and stays in their local communities. the women participating in the walk have some incredible stories. we talked to a lot of them. some had some very personal reasons they're participating. >> my sister died 11 years ago and i said would you start walking for her. and i started that next year, and i didn't know this, but i had breast cancer already. so in 2005, i was walking for

myself. and i've been healthy ever since. >> participants started their morning with a warm-up and the opening ceremonies that wrapped up about an hour ago. their two-day walk will take them in fort mason across the golden gate bridge, through mill valley and end up and spend the night in a campground and tomorrow morning start walking back here to san francisco. so altogether, it's a 49-mile walk. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. a pair of hikers stranded in the tahoe national forest are owing their survival to the rescue team that pulled them to safety. daniel stone and katie eckhart blame bad weather and equipment failure for trapping them in the wilderness, but they did take a cell phone with them so they were able to call for help. a helicopter from the mrs.er county sheriff's office pulled them out of there. survivors of the fishing boat that sank in mexico are questioning whether the captain

and the crew followed safety procedures. gary hanson and pete zuger are back home in novato. they don't know what happened to seven friends who remain missing and they accuse the boat captain of failing to send out a distress signal or beacon. >> they had had some kind of call out we would have been rescued within five hours. all of us. >> the u.s. coast guard monitored a special emergency channel borders stress calls. but the coast guard says maritime law does not require captains to call for help even though it is considered a moral obligation. in u.s. waters experts say a beacon is a required last line defense. they're still searching for the missing boaters and scanned another 800 miles yesterday morning. two teenagers have been arrested after police say they carjacked a fairfield pizza deliverly driver. one of the teens then tried to set a house on fire. this all happened just before 6:00 last night in a

neighborhood near oakbrook elementary school. the driver told police he had just delivered a pizza when he was confronted by four to five suspects who then stole his car. police say two of the suspects crashed that car and fled on foot. one was caught, police say a neighbor then reported a teenager tried to break into a vacant rental home. police say he tried to set the house on fire by putting a cutting boards on a stove turner. officers put the fire out and found the teenager hiding in some nearby bushes. we're now learning that one of the men shot in oakland thursday night has died. the shooting happened on international in front of a liquor store. the name of the victim has not been released yet and the incident was part of a string three shootings that left five others injured. police are still trying to figure out if they are all connected. the sheriff's office has made a break in a two-month-old double homicide case. in may two men were found shot to death in solano county. now investigators say they have arrested 44-year-old patrick alley in connection to those

homicides. deputies fun to him near the scene after the body were discovered. however, investigators say at the time there was no evidence linking him to the two deaths. protestors for prisoner rights will hold a rally at 11:00 this morning at san francisco's u.n. plaza. about 100 demonstrators gathered in oakland last night and were trying to raise awareness of an inmate hunger strike at pelican bay prison. prisoners at the maximum security facility called their living conditions deplorable. last night protestors wound through downtown oakland, including a stop in front of the north county jail. the city of oakland has secured concessions from all five of its public employee unions, saving the city an estimated $46 million the next two years. in spite of the agreements, oakland sent out pink slips yesterday to 68 city employees. their names and jobs have not

been released. the unions including police, fire and service employees have all accepted new contracts. concessions vary from union to union but include higher pension costs and pay cuts. members of the local 1021 also agreed to 15 unpaid days off per year. even, so the city of oakland says it may still have to ask for more depending on how much funding it receives from the state and federal governments. the san carlos city council meets monday to discuss whether to cut the pay of new firefighters by as much as 10%. the city is trying to save money to form a new fire department in october. the daily news reports salaries of new firefighters would average just under $83,000. that's among the lowest in the peninsula. lots of proposal allows firefighters to also receive overtime while sleeping on their shifts. firefighters now say a grass fire in the oakland hills was caused by a car overheating. not as arsonists first thought. the fire started about 3:30

yesterday afternoon on skyline boulevard, about half a mile from the chabot science center. officials say the fire started in this vehicle and spread to a nearby bush. the car's owner returned to the scene last night and told an investigator the vehicle had overheated when she parked it on the grass. voters may get to decide the fate of a redevelopment project at park merced. the board of supervisors already approved the plan to demolish 1800 rent controlled apartments and build about 5700 new units. opponents worried about protection of the development delivered a referendum to city hall yesterday, calling for the matter to be policed on the november ballot. developers say residents would be relocated to new apartments with the same rent control status. the battle over the color of a san rafael pizza restaurant is finally over. after months of controversy, the owner every pizza orgasmic

authorities are investigating the escape of two inmates. they used phones at walker county jail in houston. officials say they were waiting for a staged fight to happen so guards would open the doors to a secure area. then the men ran into the booking area, punching and kicking the guards. one in mated was able to get away by running out of the prison and jumping in a waiting but was caught three days later. a man is behind bars in orange county. officials say 31-year-old lee in orderee alvarez approached a depend 40 behind yesterday. that deputy and another deputy patrolling the airport grabbed the gun and then took him into custody. no shots were fired and he is now facing charges of assault and the removal of an officer's firearm. an investigation is underway at a new york state amusement park after a iraq war

the summit apartments on cypress near austin avenue. investigators say the gunman opened fire on a hayward officer around 10:00. nobody was injured. but the man immediately went into hiding somewhere in that apartment complex. that standoff ended before 5 this morning and the suspect was transported to the hospital. we're still trying to get ahold of police to get more on the suspect's injuries and his current condition. some people who live in the complex had to stay outside during the standoff. >> there were police cars on both sides of the road, as far as i could see. i don't know how many cops they were a lot of them. and i've been here now since like midnight, getting close to 5. and people have been asking for blankets and -- you know, coffee or something. >> several law enforcement agency were brought in to help police in the search. about a mile and a half away a scuffle turned into a stabbing around 1 in the morning on b street.

authorities say they rushed several people to the hospital with knife wounds. one person did suffer severe injuries to the abdomen. it's unclear what caused the fight or if it's gang-related. authorities reportedly have a suspect in custody. he was also taken to the hospital. right now, thousands of men and women are walking through the streets of san francisco and it's all in the name of breast cancer research. ali rasmus is live in north beep, where supporters are cheering on the walkers. good morning, ali. >> reporter: good morning, like. we're standing on the rock route now, and you can see a group of people making their way up on the street. these are some of more than 2,000 men and women taking part in this year's san francisco avon walk for breast cancer. we watched as the massive people left fort mason an our

fell 20 feet on to concrete and later died. it will review safety procedures at all stadiums. stone was a firefighter in the texas city of brownwood. the community along with co- workers held a fund-raiser yesterday for the stone family. rangers baseball team has also set up a memorial fund in his honor. the oakland a's were playing the rangers the day of the fall. they have donated $5,000 to that fund. the federal government is admitting parole agents made mistakes in monitoring phillip garrido. the 11 years he was under federal supervision following his 1988 release from prison and that report is 43 pages long and films on visits to his home near antioch. the report states home contact were rare, frequent positive drug tests and submission of diluted urine samples were largely ignored. the report concludes his supervision was clearly substandards.

big changes start this weekend for the oakland police department. earlier this week, the chief announce and the department will now split the city into two geographic areas rather than three. that's also announced a motorcycle unit would be disbanded so the officers could be put become on regular patrol. both changes go into effect today. the two moves should help the department more effectively use its limited resources. budget cuts over the recent years have trimmed nearly 200 officers from the department. east palo alto will offer money to people who turn in their guns today. that buyback starts at 9:00 this morning. the guns must be unloaded and in the trunk of a vehicle. they can be dropped off at the east palo alto government center on university avenue. and 100 dollar cash cards will be given out for the first 75 weapons turned in. the gold on gate ferry ticket offices in san francisco and larkspur and are now empty. seven jobs were eliminated in

his car when the suspect's suv struck the patrol car head-on. police say they will seek a capital murder charge against the suspect because they believe he intentionally hit that police car. an afghan guard shot and killed two coalition members, including a nato soldier. that shooting happened in the province which is about 62 miles north of kabul. authorities say the guard was standing outside his home when a nato convoy passed. he stopped that convoy and then started arguing with them, and then he opened fire. he shot three people before a nato soldier killed him. there's no word yet on the nationality of the coalition members. greece has secured a $4.6 billion bailout from the monetary fund. the passage of those spending cuts last week triggered widespread roy in athens but the government said the cuts were necessary in order to secure the bailout money.

medicare. minnesota governor mark dayton admits that he is keeping some hired help around during an ongoing government shutdown. minnesota's government shutdown two weeks ago after budget negotiations between the governor and the republican legislature broke down. that many state employees to be furloughed but not the governor's house keeper or chef. he says the jobs are critical to help maintain the state mansion. >> we have state parks that are closed because of his decision to shut downstate gone but he's keeping his housekeeper? >> governor dayton says he is personally paying the chef salary out of his own pocket. the death toll from the may tornado that ripped through missouri has increased to 159. they released a statement saying a woman has died from her injuries. the announcement was the first in two weeks regarding any deaths related to the storm. the tornado damage is now

right now, thousands of people are walking fast true the streets san francisco, and it's all for a powerful cause. and welcome back to morning on 2. today is the annual avon walk for breast cancer. it is two days long, and covers dozens of miles. ali rasmus is live in san francisco where that walk got started just about 90 minutes ago. hi, ali.

>> reporter: it is well underway, we're on broadway and columbus in san francisco. this is 3 1/2 miles into the walk route. you can see dozens of people making their way up columbus street, dressed in pink hats, shirts and ribbons. these are the people taking part in the san francisco avon walk for breast cancer. but along with people directly involved, the people walking this this 40-mile route, there are a lot of people offering support. there's a group of cheerleaders here standing out in the corner for the last hour offering words every support and encouragement. we watched as the 2,000 men and women taking part in this walk started. they started out about a hour and a half ago. each raised $1800, so the total amount -- [loss of audio]

providing -- there are a lot of women taking part in this race, men and women, who have some personal reasons why they're out here. >> missy is my sister she died 11 years ago. and i said i would start walking for her. and i started that next year, and i didn't know this, but i had breast cancer already. so in 2005, i was walking for myself. and i've been healthy ever since. >> there are hundreds of incredible stories like that among the people taking part in this walk. this is a two-day walk. and all these people you sri here will go through the city of san francisco, over the golden gate bridge through sausalito, mill valley, they will spend the night at a

campground and then tomorrow morning they will walk all the way back to san francisco. so altogether, this is a 40 movie mile walk. this is also the ninth year in a row san francisco has had the avon walk for breast cancer. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. survivors of the fishing boat that sank in mexico are questioning whether the captain and the crew followed proper safety protocol. two men are back home safely but don't know what happened to seven friends who remain missing. they accuse the captain of failing to send out a distress signal or beacon. >> if they had some kind of call out, we would have been rescued within five hours. would have got all of us out of there. >> the u.s. coast guard monitors a special emergency radio channel for distress calls year round but the coast guard says maritime law does not require captains to call for help although it is considered a moral obligation. and u.s. waters, experts say a beacon is a required last line of defense. the coast guard says it is still searching for the missing

boaters it has scanned another 800 miles yesterday. relatives of the santa cruz family of four killed in a plane crash are remembering their loved ones in weekend. david and de at the houghton died thursday with their sons luke and ryan after the plane crashed in watsonville. the family was on the way to yosemite for a birthday celebration. john houghton says they loved life to the fullest and loved to travel the world. >> they went and saw the mere midst in egypt, safari in africa. >> john says his brother was flying three years and had flown hundreds of miles in the plane which he is part owner of. the national transportation safety board is taking plane wreck on to sacramento to conduct a more detailed inspection. a preliminary report will be completed in five to 10 days, but the final report isn't expected to nine months to a year. two teenagers arrested after police say they carjacked

a fairfield pizza delivery driver. they say one of the teenagers then tried to set a house on fire. this happened before 6:00 last night in the neighborhood near okay brook elementary school. the delivery driver told police had had just delivered a pizza when he was confronted by five suspects who stole his car. two of the suspects crashed the vehicle and fled on foot. one person was caught. police say a neighbor then reported a teenager trying to break into a vacant rental home. police say he tried to set the home on fire by putting a cutting board on a stove burner. officers put the small fire out and found the teenager in some nearby bushes. we are now learning that one of the men shot in oakland thursday night has died. the shooting happened on 71st. the name of the victim was not released, part of a string of three shootings that left five other people injured. police are still trying to determine if they are connected. oakland firefighters say a

grass fire in the oakland hills was caused by a car that overheated. the fire started just after 3:30 yesterday afternoon, in a car on skyline boulevard about a half mile from the space and science center. crews put the fire out a hour later and only one acre was burned. officials say the fire started in a car and spread to nearby brush. the car's owner returned to the scene and told an investigator her car overheated and she parked it on the grass. the man accused of stealing a picasso sketch from a art gallery will be back in court on monday. 30-year-old mark lugo was charged with grand theft yesterday. he is accused of taking the sketch from the wine gallery on tuesday. prosecutors say he also faces charges of second degree burglary and having stolen property. he is held in lieu of $5 million bail. protestors for prisoners rights will hold a rally this morning at the u.n. plaza.

about 100 demonstrators gathered in oakland last night. they tried to raise awareness of an inmate hunger strike at pelican bay prison. prisoners at the facility call their living conditions deplorable. last night protestors wound through the streets of oakland, including a stop in front of the north county jail. the city of oakland has secured concessions for all five of its public employee unions, saving the city an estimated $46 million the next two years. in spite of that, the city did send out pink slips yesterday to 68 city employees. their names and jobs have not been released yet. the unions including police, fire and service employees have all accepted new contracts. concessions vary from union to union but do include higher pension costs and pay cuts. members of the local 1021 also agreed to 15 unpaid days off per year. even, so the city says it may still have to ask for more. depending on how much funding it receivers from the state and federal government.

new firefighters could see their salaries slashed up to 10%. the city is trying to save money to form a new fire department in october. delay news reports salaries of new firefighters would average just under $83,000. the city council takes up the proposal on monday. it does allow firefighters to receive overtime while sleeping on their shifts. after months of controversy, the outside of a pizza place in san rafael will be changed. the owner of pizza has a agreed to change the restaurant's bright yellow and green paint job. in january city planners complained about the colors and said the restaurant should fit in with the rest of the downtown. the owner says the paint reflects his brazilian heritage. if you think parking is expensive in san francisco, try living in new york. midtown manhattan has the highest parking rates in the nation, according to a survey bircolliers international. the medium monthly rate at an underground parking garage
