inland. temperatures come way down. 50s, 60s and 70s pam -- or sal, excuse me. all right. right now traffic is doing well around the bay area. as a matter of fact we have some road work though. i want to mention you're going to see some drizzle as steve mentioned. go outside and take a look at what we have with highway 4 westbound. you can see traffic is off to a decent start, but, again, some of the roads around the bay area are going to be just a little bit, well, it's going to be a little bit wet and damp. this is a look at interstate 8 0 and that traffic is looking pretty good here as you drive past the coliseum. and this morning's commute is looking good if you're driving on northbound 280. it's at the speed limit getting up to highway 17. now let's go back to the desk. well, overnight for the second time in less than a week a popular east bay hiking trail is a crime scene. ktvu's kraig debro joins us now from pittsburg where there was

another shooting on the delta trail overnight. >> reporter: good morning, pam. this happened just north of railroad avenue on the trail. you can see behind me there's one patrol car here and there were two other east bay regional park police cars down in either side of the trail flanking the trail. i spoke to an officer here and he says that's because police want to prevent people who have gates that lead to the trail from coming out their back gates and possibly contaminating evidence at the crime scene here. i just got off the phone with a regional park police dispatcher and he tells me they received a call from the county sheriff's office around 6 minutes to midnight. the report a man had been shot. the unidentified man is now being treated at gonomery medical center for his injuries. we don't know the extent of his injuries. still trying to get that information from police. for some this trail is becoming less safe every day. a man shot in the back ahead along the trail at atlantic avenue in harbor just last week died over the weekend. make a call to the park police to find out the condition of

the person who was shot and see if i can find out any specks. overnight in oakland police arrested one man after an officer-involved shooting. that happened about midnight outside a lucky store on macarthur and 38th avenue. oakland police are not revealing many details about what happened, but we do know that officers came into contact with two men. for some reason the officers felt threatened and they opened fire. no one was hit and one man is now in custody. a second person of interest is still on the loose. protests over another fatal shooting involving bart police officers. coming up in 12 minutes the changes one group wants made after a man was killed last week. overnight a police chase in fremont ended after the driver of a stolen car lost control and crashed. police arrested two male

suspects. a female suspect was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. police say the three stole the car at gunpoint in san pablo about 12:30 this morning. they led police on a chase on interstates 80 and 580 before getting onto mission boulevard. spike strips were laid down. they damaged their tires along the way. they crashed on the northbound 880 onramp at mission boulevard. fire at a school in daly city and police believe it was intentionally set. it happened at about 11:30 last night at skyline elementary on christian avenue. now two classrooms and a portable building went up in flames. damage includes the building and everything inside including books, chairs and audio-visual equipment. the cause of that fire is now under investigation. police say they have sectioned off an area behind the building and they are calling it a crime scene. there are no reports of any injuries and students were not

there. they return to school on august 17th. san francisco firefighters are on the scene of a fire in the city's sunnyside neighborhood. that started at about 2:30 this morning at a home on melrose avenue. the fire then spread to a second house. firefighters report no injuries and there is no word yet on how that fire started. one teenage girl is dead and three others are sick after a sleepover in santa rosa. the press democrat reports the 14-year-old girl and her three friends woke up early sunday morning and started vomiting after drinking soda mixed with an unknown substance. now the girls went back to bed but the parents of the 14-year- old could not wake up their daughter in the morning. the sonoma county sheriff's department is waiting for toxicology reports. continuing our coverage now of the search for seven missing fishermen still missing after more than a week after their boat capsized off the coast of

baja, california. the coast guard says they have not found any sign of the fishermen. crews have been focused on a 1,000 square mile area in the sea of cortez. today will be the seventh day in a row that search efforts have taken place. the eric capsized one week ago today with 27 people on board, one person is confirmed dead. three brothers who survived the sinking are hoping a fourth brother comes home okay. gary, craig and glenn were on the boat with their brother bryan. bryan woke them up and alerted them to the sinking boat but they lost track of him in the scramble to get off. the brothers admit the possibility that bryan is alive gets smaller with each passing day. they are hoping that a dive team will soon make its way into the water. >> get the divers down there i hope, i pray that they don't find anybody trapped in the

boat, but at the same time you know i'm a realist. >> now the three brothers say bryan is the best fishermen of the four of them. bryan wong has a wife and two daughters. we're learning more about a shooting in richmond over the weekend that killed three people. police say the shooting was the result of a drug deal gone bad. 36-year-old michael anderson of richmond, 19-year-old donate and cory of san lee anadrol found in a triangle court public housing unit on saturday. police say gunfire erupted in the unit while a 6-year-old played in the next room. >> we definitely need an outpouring of concerned citizens in the city of richmond. >> now the 6-year-old was not hurt in the shooting. police say there was a fourth man in the house who is being held for questioning.

the shooting brought the total number of homicides within the past week to six. the violence comes after a dramatic drop in homicides last year. well, thousands of people are expected to attend a funeral this morning for the man who died after falling over a railing during the texas rangers baseball game. 39-year-old firefighter shannon stone died thursday after his fall while the rangers were playing the oakland a's. he was at the game with his 6- year-old son trying to catch a foul ball thrown his way by rangers outfielder josh hamilton. representatives of the texas rangers are among those planning to attend this morning's funeral. well, the book written by kidnap victim jaycee dugard does not go on sale for another day but it is already a best seller. in her first televised interview dugard is describing the moment she was snatched off a south lake tahoe street by phillip and nancy garrido. dugard remembers walking up the hill from her home and being

paralyzed by a stun gun. she remembers waking up in the back of a car with nancy garrido holding her down. when asked why she wrote a book about her experiences this is what she said "why not look at it? stare it down until it can't scare you anymore? i didn't want there to be any more secrets ." dugard had two daughters with garrido. both phillip and nancy garrido are in prison serving time for rape and kidnapping. jaycee dugard is now 31 years old. at 8:00 this morning president obama has scheduled a press conference, his second in less than a week to update negotiations on raising the u.s. debt limit. now the president and congressional negotiators have agreed to meet every day until they reach a deal. they met for 75 minutes last night. on august 2nd deadline fast approaching. >> i was just ahead of that point. if they don't act then we face

catastrophic damage to the american economy and the leadership to their credit and i mean republicans and democrats fully understand. >> nobody's talking about not raising the debt ceiling. i haven't heard that discussed by anybody. >> some are. >> not in the congress. >> republicans say they won't agree to raise the debt ceiling unless serious spending cuts are made to reduce the deficit. democrats want to end some tax breaks for the wealthiest americans. work on most of the new transbay transit center in san francisco will resume this morning two days after a construction worker was hurt on the job. but work is being stopped in the area where that worker hit a live power line saturday afternoon. the accident happened while he was relocating some underground power lines beneath fremont street between mission and howard. the worker suffered second degree burns but is expected to make a full recovery. cal osha has completed their investigation but has not released the findings.

time now 4:39. go back over to sal to get a look at traffic. good morning, sal. good morning to you, pam. traffic is doing pretty well around the bay area. as a matter of fact we're off to -- pardon me, a nice start. there are no major problems this morning if you are driving on the nimitz freeway heading south looks pretty nice as you drive to fremont. also the morning commute looks good if you are driving on westbound bay bridge approach. it is a nice drive coming into san francisco lower deck they're clearing up some road work on the right hand lane. get on to the lower deck of the bay bridge watch for some lane closures. they might be picking them up soon. they're there so slow down through that area. and this morning's commute in san jose along northbound 280 looks very nice getting up to highway 17. at 4:40 let's go to steve. thank you, sal. very good morning. well, last week i was telling you about hot temperatures 90s 100s and this week it will be very, very cool conditions. so from one extreme to the other the cooling continues. low overcast not just fog.

last week it was mainly fog on the coast. this is low overcast, drizzle or misty conditions. mr. drizzle is out there again. mr. drizzle. that system will dig in, that system the one up to the north of us is digging in and that's going to give us a huge cooling trend. in fact it started a little bit on saturday and really kicked in yesterday, sunday. and continue all the way probably into midweek. in fact temperatures will go from very, very warm to very, very cool. and some areas probably have a tough time clearing on the coast so we can kind of max it out a little bit. with inland temperatures coming down that might help chew up the fog but not today. there's a lot there. thunderstorm activity as expected moved off once we get the westerly-southwesterly flow in the upper atmosphere. 50s low to mid. very, very cool readings over the weekend. i know especially western part of marin county, valley down in the low 40s on sunday which is very, very cool for this time of year. west-southwest fairfield at 18. west 9 at sfo.

assistance should arrive soon. seven family members are dead after their small plane crashed in alabama. the f.a.a. says one of the plane's engines failed en route from missouri to florida saturday night. the pilot tried landing in alabama but crashed in a wooded area just two miles from the airport. two adults and their five children were on board that plane. they were returning from a family reunion. a group will stage a protest today at bart civic center station in san francisco where bart police shot and killed a man last week. 45-year-old charles hill was allegedly wielding a knife and a bottle before bart police shot him last sunday. he later died at the hospital. a group called no justice no bart is calling for the officers involved to be fired and charges filed against them. they also want the bart police department to be shut down. today's protests will begin at 4:30. a former cincinnati bengals

player is dead after a confrontation with sheriffs deputies. it happened outside a bakersfield convenience store yesterday morning. family members say kern county deputies accused david lee turner of buying alcohol for some minors. turner denied the claims and started to walk away. he was with his teenage son who told his sister what happened next. >> as he was walking away the officer came up behind -- one of the officers came up behind him and hit him in the back of the legs with a billy club causing him to fall on his knees. >> the sheriff's department says deputies shot turner after he hit one of them over the head with a bag containing beer. the shooting is under investigation. antioch police have begun a summer long crack down on kids breaking curfew. now the curfew runs from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. officers cited 37 teenagers in the until park area friday night. police say the crack down is not aimed at harassing kids but

rather to keep them safe from juvenile and adult criminals. >> the crimes range from simple assaults, simple thefts to strong armed robberies. >> i mean as a kid you're always going to want a later curfew, but when you have to be home, you have to be home. >> now problem areas range from open spaces and parks and businesses as well. police urge people to call them if they see groups of teens milling around and breaking curfew. the japanese government is announcing new stress tests to restart nuclear reactors. today marks four months since the devastating earthquake and tsunami that damaged the plant. currently only 19 of japan's 54 reactors are operating. that's causing electricity shortages. the government says more nuclear reactors could resume operations if they pass the new stress tests. the tests will examine whether a reactor can with stand a

massive earthquake and tsunami. new this morning, three rockets hit baghdad's green zone during a visit by u.s. defense secretary leon panetta. show you new video of panetta arriving in baghdad. he was not injured in the attack on the green zone. panetta is meeting with u.s. and iraqi military leaders. he's set to discuss the possibility of keeping some u.s. troops in iraq beyond december 31st. that's when all of u.s. troops are scheduled to depart. nasa is keeping an eye on some space junk that could pose a threat to the international space station and to the shuttle atlantis. the piece of an old russian satellite will be closest to the combined spacecraft tomorrow. that is during one of the planned space walks for the mission. nasa says if the debris poses a problem, the thrusters on atlantis can be used to move the station and the shuttle. the duke and duchess of cambridge are scheduled to be back in britain this morning.

prince william and his new bride kate departed l.a.x. yesterday afternoon. of course they boarded a british airways jet. the newlyweds wrapped up a whirlwind three day tour of southern california. stops included visit with inner city children at an arts school in skid row. the royals artistic talents impressed the students. >> princess kate she was really tall like elegant but like not like everyone else. she was just like one of a kind. >> one of a kind. the couple also attended a reception and a fair for military vets. the trip marked william's first time in california and kate's first trip to the united states. all right. it's 4:50. reminding drivers of an important rule of the road. the new campaign that begins today following the deaths of three cal trans workers in less than two months.

welcome back to the morning news. it's now 4:53. and cal trans launches a new public safety campaign today. it comes after the deaths of three workers in less than two months. now the latest happened just a few weeks ago in san diego. 52-year-old richard gonzalez was cleaning up trash along a connector ramp when he was hit by a car. cal trans new campaign encourages drivers to follow the state's move over law. that requires drivers to slow down and move out of the lane that is next to any cal trans work. all right. 4:53. back to sal to check in on the

morning commute. sal. all right. pam, right now traffic is doing well around the bay area. let's go out and take a look at the golden gate bridge. a little bit of mist and fog you might want to slow down this morning because the roads are going to be wet and especially in san francisco we have some wet weather. the morning commute is going to be okay if you are driving on doyle drive. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza westbound. it's still light. there are no major problems getting into san francisco. on that lower deck though they were clearing up some road work in the right lanes and watch out for that near the entrance to the bay bridge in san francisco. at 4:54 let's go to steve. all right, sal, thank you. very cool pattern this week. in fact low clouds, drizzle coast and bay. low clouds and once they burn off for some it might take a while be breezy, inland patchy low clouds some made it well inland. sunny, breezy to windy. gusts over 30 maybe this afternoon all courtesy of a very strong unseasonably strong cold low moving into oregon. we had our two in june.

i was talking to a friend of mine lived here all his life he said that rain in the june was really rare. it was for us. it was record setting. guess what? there's a very strong one moving into oregon right off portland. i'll show you in just a second. 52 bookends santa rosa and napa. 56 hayward and livermore. mountain view and san jose 57. it's cool for everybody. west-southwest 18 south- southeast santa rosa at 5. that's a cool pattern this time of year. when it comes over the bay that's cooler for them as well. when stockton has a west wind of 14 you know it's going to be cooler. that system right there to see something of that strength coming down this time of year is impressive because it stays to the north but the southern edge of that just ramps up the fog. low overcast, drizzle, cooling continues probably through wednesday maybe thursday then eject out of here. started big time on sunday and continue today temperatures far below average as we get towards tuesday and wednesday. low clouds and sunny, breezy for some. local drizzle here. sunny but cooler inland.

temperatures 50s 60s coast and bay and then 70s inland. still be some 80s but very, very low 80s especially lake county maybe towards vacaville. but cooling continues tuesday into wednesday. looks like we'll level out wednesday or thursday and then see warmer weather but nothing too extreme yet as when he had towards the weekend. funeral services for former first lady betty ford begin tomorrow in southern california. the wife of the late president gerald ford died on friday at age 93. there will be a private visitation and funeral at the church in palm dessert tomorrow morning. the public can then pay their respects that evening. mrs. ford's body will then be flown to michigan where she'll be buried next to her husband. smokers in iceland may soon need to call their doctor to get a prescription to buy a pack of cigarettes. a new bill would ban the sale of cigarettes in regular stores allowing only pharmacies to sell them. iceland's former health minister proposed the bill to

encourage smokers to enlist the help of their doctors to quit. now they would only be prescribed cigarettes if they failed to kick the habit. it's part of a ten year plan to drastically limit smoking in iceland. parliament has to vote on that bill. one reason to hope for warm weather today, it is 7-11. to 7-eleven giving away slurpies. last year they handed out four and a half million of those drinks. it hopes to increase that number this year. free drinks are available until 11:00 tonight at nearly all 400 of the bay area 7 eleven stores. a peninsula school damaged by fire overnight. the reason arson investigators have now been called to the scene. and another shooting overnight on a popular east bay hiking trail. the neighborhood that's behind a crime scene again.
