>> reporter: in pittsburg this morning there's been another shooting at a popular east bay park. sonoma county sheriffs detectives are investigating the death of a 14-year-old girl. it happened at a weekend sleepover. we'll have more information coming up. an overnight fire damages a local elementary school. we'll take you inside the burned classroom. plus the search continues for those missing bay area fishermen in mexico's sea of cortez. the new strategy that may start today. the morning news continues. good morning to you. welcome to monday july 11th. i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. let's start with steve and a look at weather this morning.

thank you. we have a lot of low clouds around. a howling sea breeze set up as well. we have a strong component of that from golden gate, sfo and san pablo bay and out to the delta. local mist and or drizzle out there. so if you like cool weather, today's your day. here's sal. steve, good morning. right now on 80 westbound looks pretty good coming around the berkeley curve. it's dry here. but you will see some wet weather in some areas. wet weather by meaning fog and mist and the roads are going to be wet. let's move along and take a look at the westbound bay bridge. some earlier wind warnings have been lifted but you can still -- you should still be sort of careful on that upper deck just in case. 6:01. back to the desk. in overnight news the delta hiking trail in pittsburg is once again the scene of a shooting. ktvu's kraig debro joins us in pittsburg where police are now investigating this latest shooting. kraig. >> reporter: it appears all

that's happening right now is that the east bay regional park police are trying to keep people out of this area. so when they bring in crime scene investigators and some crews they can comb through this area and look for evidence. let's look behind me on the trail. you're looking eastbound right now. we just saw something in the middle of the trail down there next to one of those patrol cars. as soon as we can make out a shoe or something of that nature. not sure if it's related to what happened here last night. patrol cars have been flanking this trail on either side. their idea is to try to keep people from coming out their back gates and contaminating evidence. when i spoke to dispatcher east bay regional park district earlier this morning they told me they received a call from the county deputy sheriff's office, the contra costa county sheriff's office around six minutes to midnight. the report was a man had been shot but that's all dispatcher would tell me. we don't know the extent of that man's injuries. do know this unidentified person has been taken to medical center in walnut creek. for some this area's become less and less safe. last week you might recall 20-

year-old marcus jackson shot in the back of the head at atlantic and harbor. that's very close to here. in fact atlantic is just a couple blocks south of where we are right now. police say that person was targeted. in fact they think he may have been actually involved in a crime earlier that week in antioch, the target of an attempted murder. so while it appears that particular crime wasn't targeted until police tell us more about this, people around here are going to be a little nervous. live in pittsburg, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. overnight in oakland police arrested one man after an officer involved shooting. that happened around midnight outside a lucky store on macarthur and 38th avenue. oakland police aren't revealing many details about what happened, but we do know that officers came in contact with two men. for some reason the officers felt threatened and opened fire but no one was hit. one man is now in custody, a second person of interest is

still on the loose. a police chase ended just hours ago in fremont after the driver of a stolen car lost control and crashed. two men were arrested. a woman also a suspect was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. police say the three people stole the car at gunpoint in san pablo at about 12:30 this morning. they then led police on a chase on interstates 80 and 580 before getting onto mission boulevard. spike strips were laid down. they damaged the tires along the way and the car crashed on the northbound 880 onramp at mission boulevard. time now 6:04. investigation underway in santa rosa after a 14-year-old girl died during a weekend sleepover with her friends. ktvu's allie rasmus joining us now with the questions surrounding the soda the girls were drinking. allie. >> reporter: well, right now we are at the sonoma county sheriff's department headquarters in santa rosa. the sheriff's office is the agency investigating the death

of this 14-year-old girl. and right now the information we're getting from the sheriff's office is that this happened some time saturday night into early sunday morning. four teenage girls got together for a weekend sleepover at a home in santa rosa on foothill ranch road. at some point during the night all four teens became violently ill after passing around a soda with an unknown substance in it. the parents at first thought it was just food poisoning. the parents hosting this sleepover. but on sunday morning when they tried to wake one of the four teenagers she did not respond. paramedics were called to the home and paramedics pronounced that the girl had died. sonoma county sheriff's violent crimes investigative detectives are the ones looking into this death. the cause of the 14-year-old's death is unknown at this time but they're trying to figure out what may have been in the canned soda that was passed around and whether that may have caused this death. we're working to gather more information on this but for now live in santa rosa, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:05.

officials at one peninsula school have a big clean up to do. a fire broke out at daly city's skyline elementary school on christian avenue. this happened about 11:30 last night. just look at the pictures. the portable classroom went up in flames. the damage includes the building itself, everything inside, books, chairs, audio- visual equipment. took firefighters about 15 minutes to put it out. authorities don't know what started the fire but it apparently started outside of the portable building. no word of any injuries and students by the way return to school on august 17th. meantime firefighters say an overnight house fire in san francisco caused about $350,000 damage. this fire started just before 2:30 this morning at a home on melrose avenue. the flames then spread to a second house. took firefighters about 20 minutes to contain that one alarm fire. no injuries have been reported. authorities think the fire started in the living room of the first house, but the cause

of the fire is still under investigation. the book written by kidnap victim jaycee dugard does not go on sale for another day but it is already a best seller. in her first televised interview, dugard describes the moment she was snatched off a south lake tahoe street by phillip and nancy garrido. dugard says she remembers walking up the hill from her home and then being paralyzed by a stun gun. she remembers waking up in the back of the car with nancy garrido holding her down. when asked why she wrote a book about her experiences, dugard says "why not look at it? stare it down until it can't scare you anymore. i didn't want there to be anymore secrets "dugard had two daughters with phillip garrido. both phillip and nancy garrido are now in prison serving time for rape and kidnapping. jaycee dugard is now 31 years old. time now 6:07. about two hours from now president obama will hold a news conference giving us an

update on those negotiations to raise the national debt limit. coming up for you at 6:15 we'll have a live report from our washington d.c. newsroom on the sticking points in those negotiations. continuing coverage now of the seven fishermen still missing off the coast of baja, california. a navy dive team could join that search effort today. the contra costa times reports the team was scheduled to arrive in mexico over the weekend. a team will conduct an underwater search of the fishing boat that went down more than a week ago. the coast guard will also continue its own search today. 27 people were on board that boat. one person is confirmed dead. three brothers who survived the sinking are hoping a fourth brother comes home okay. gary, craig and glen wong were on the boat with their brother bryan. now the brothers say bryan actually woke them up and alerted them about the sinking

boat. but then they lost track of him as they scrambled to get off the boat. the brothers admit the possibility that bryan is alive gets smaller with each passing day. they are now counting on that navy dive team. >> they get the divers down there i hope, i pray that they don't find anybody trapped in the boat, but at the same time you know i'm a realist. >> now the three brothers say bryan is the best fishermen of the four. bryan wong has a wife and two daughters. now you can find more coverage of this story on our website ktvu.com. we have posted video of last sunday's rescue. just click on the lost fishermen tab. all right. time now 6:09. let's check in with sal. as your morning begins you're talking about fog in some areas and some wet roads. >> yeah. may have led to a crash, dave and pam, on skyline boulevard in san bruno. an injury crash there and the fire department is on the scene along with paramedics.

let's go out and take a look at what we have westbound bay bridge. the traffic is moving along pretty well as you drive up to the bridge itself and no major problems. also the morning commute on nearby interstate 880 is nice. you can see it's dry here in oakland. but it's not so dry across the bay. in fact we just spoke about that accident on skyline. this whole area along skyline that's where the accident is but the entire area of highway 1 skyline highway 280 or interstate 280 and some of the local roads are wet. part of san francisco as well because of that drizzle. we move across the east bay. hayward union city southbound 880 some slowing approaching highway 92. of course contra costa county highway 4 is stop and go now as you drive through antioch but that's typical. 680 still looks good to walnut creek and 24 still looks good to the tunnel. at 6:10 let's go to steve. all right, sal. thank you. big fog bank out there. big massive huge, it's big and moved locally inland. last week had a lot of trouble. it was fog.

well, it's overcast now and also end result a lot of drizzle and a rip roaring snorting sea breeze with gusts i'll show you here already over 20, 25 for many out of the west- southwest. cooler pattern this week last weekend it was hot. this week cool. low clouds, drizzle, low clouds, breezy for the bay. patchy low clouds, breezy to windier blustery at times. 50s, 52, 53, 54. couple little warmer. redwood city, hayward and livermore. 56 your trifecta for the day. 57 san jose. south-southwest concord buchanan 17. west-southwest fairfield 21. west-southwest napa 8. west 14 oakland. south-southeast santa rosa. cover up livermore west about 10. that's all right out of the sea breeze direction and it's this system right there that's diving in. the mere fact that a system that strong coming in in mid- july you don't see that very often but we had our two systems in june so nothing surprises me anymore.

no injuries reported. you're looking at new video of secretary panetta meeting today with the u.s. ambassador of iraq as well as military leaders. he also spoke to american troops. >> you're the ones i'm responsible for. you're the ones i care about. you're the ones that i want to make sure are protected not only for yourselves but for your families. >> secretary panetta says he will push iraqi leaders to crack down on armed militants targeting american troops. 14 u.s. troops were killed in the month of june. three more have already been killed in july. well, the obama administration is withholding $800 million of military aid to pakistan. this follows pakistan's expelling american military trainers after the u.s. raid in pakistan that killed osama bin laden. and the u.s. is pressuring pakistan to be more aggressive as they pursue the taliban. the white house chief of staff william dally says the u.s.

relationship with pakistan is complicate. president obama is holding a news conference in less than two hours. ktvu's allison burns reports the president wants to give his take on why it's been impossible to reach a deal to raise the nation's debt limit. allison. >> reporter: that's right, pam. two key events we are watching today. first president obama will be laying out the battle lines in his morning news conference. then negotiations resume this afternoon at the white house. during sunday's 75 minute session president obama again pressed for what's being called the grand plan to reduce the deficit by $4 trillion including $1 trillion in tax increases. republican leaders say a smaller package with no tax increases stands the only chance in the house. treasury secretary is continuing to emphasize the stakes involved. >> it's politically very hard, but this is a grave moment for the country. we need to do something very

big, very substantial to bring our long-term deficit down overtime. >> reporter: one potential pack to compromise seems to be running into a roadblockful democrats say that republicans are now saying they will not consider major defense cuts. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:17. well, google is teaming up with berlin's oldest university to launch a research institute. the partnership will look at the evolution of the internet and its impact on society, science, politics and the economy. the google will spend about $6.5 million to run the institute the first three years. the work begins this fall. the japanese government is announcing new stress tests to restart nuclear reactors. today marks four months since the devastating earthquake and tsunami that damaged the fukushima nuclear power plant. currently only 19 of japan's 54 reactors are operating.

and that's causing electricity shortages. now the government says more nuclear reactors could resume operations if they passed the new stress test. the tests will examine whether the reactors can with stand an earthquake and tsunami. time now 6:18. funeral services for former first lady betty ford begin tomorrow in southern california. the wife of the late president gerald ford died on friday at the age of 93. there will be a private visitation and funeral at a church in palm desert tomorrow morning. the public can then pay their respects later that evening. her body will then be flown to michigan where she'll be buried right next to her husband. 6:19 is the time. back over to sal to take a look at traffic. sal. all right. pam and dave; right now traffic is moving along pretty well around the bay area although the fog and drizzle will make it tough driving places like the golden gate bridge. but not here in silicon valley. you can see northbound 280 getting up to 880 it's nice and

dry for your drive to work if you're driving let's say up to apple headquarters or wherever you're going all over the valley here you can see it's going to be a nice drive. this is a look at westbound bay bridge. that traffic looks pretty good coming into san francisco. and the morning drive on the east shore freeway in contra costa county west you can see traffic looks good. we have also been looking at the east bay, hayward, union city and fremont and no problems across the san mateo or dumbarton bridges. have been mentioning the fog. slow traffic pacifica, daly city and on skyline boulevard as we have an accident still there at the corner of skyline boulevard. 6:20. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. last week i was talking about record setting temperature, well, close to it. it was hot inland temperatures 890s, 100s, big dome of high pressure. this week just the opposite. one extreme to the other it's going to be a cool, cool week. if you like cool weather, i believe wilson picket said it best she's looking good although i think he wasn't talking about the weather.

but i am. and big fog bank out there. 52 san francisco, napa, santa rosa, 56 livermore 54 concord with a wind gusting to 25 miles an hour. folks i've done this for a long time. we're done. we're done. we're sold out. west-southwest 21 gusting 25 fairfield. the system coming in right there digging in to portland doesn't look like much but the mere fact that it makes it that far in mid-july means we are in a cool pattern. low clouds, breezy, some dress. sal touched on that as well. dave mentioned it. i mentioned it coming in. it's there. 50s, 60s 70s majority with a few very, very low 80s even up into lake county temperatures are cooling off. cooling continues wednesday into thursday and thursday and friday as we head into the weekend slightly warmer. crude oil slipped to less than $95 a barrel this morning on concerns that the u.s. economy is still struggling. international investors worry that growing unemployment in the u.s. will diminish demand for everything from cars to

clothes. but gas prices may be soon headed up again. the national average is $3.63 a gallon. that's up a penny from yesterday. here in the bay area prices at the pump are holding steady so far gas is $3.87 in san francisco. down about 17 cents from a month ago. all right. time now 6:21. well, somebody's making death threats against a top cop here in the bay area. why the f.b.i. is helping to find out who's doing it. the controversial bill to curb smoking. where people may soon only be able to get cigarettes with a doctor's permission.

are to watch his back because he would get shot. similar threats have been made against the sheriff since he took office in january. time now 6:25. antioch police have started a summer long crack down on kids breaking curfew. now the curfew runs from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. and officers cited 37 teenagers in the knoll park area friday night. the police say the crackdown is not aimed at harassing the kids. rather they want them to be safe from criminals. >> crimes range from simple assaults, simple thefts to strong armed robberies. >> i mean as a kid you're always going to want a later curfew, but when you have to be home, you have to be home. >> now the problem areas range from the open spaces like parks to businesses. police are urging residents call them if they see groups of teenagers milling around and breaking the curfew. there are two new studies this morning on secondhand smoke and its effects on children. one study from the american

academy of pediatrics links secondhand smoke exposure in a home to an increased risk of learning disabilities, adhd and other behavioral disorders. however the second study has some better news. it says kids ages 8 to 13 who have a negative opinion of the smell of cigarette smoke after being exposed are 78% less likely to start the habit themselves later on. smokers in iceland may soon need a prescription to buy a pack of cigarettes. a new bill would ban the sale of cigarettes in regular stores allowing only pharmacies to sell them. iceland's former health minister proposed the bill to encourage smokers to enlist the help of their doctor to quit. now they would only be prescribed cigarettes if they failed to kick the habit. part of a dramatic push to decrease smoking. mystery surrounding a

morning european markets all headed significantly lower 1.5% to 2% overnight much of the same in asia. not as big of a loss overnight, but still in response to our disappointing jobs numbers on friday. so dow jones already down 90 points. we'll keep watching. all right. we'll smile and say good morning to you. thank you for joining us here on ktvu morning news. it is monday july 11th. i'm dave clark. good morning. i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. well, in the news right now a suspicious soda drink is being tested by the authorities this morning after a 14-year- old girl died and three others became ill during a weekend sleepover. ktvu's allie rasmus here now to tell us what some of the teenagers said about this soda before that teenager died. allie. >> reporter: well, dave, the four girls who were at this sleepover told sonoma county sheriffs investigators that they had passed around the soda that they said tasted strange. the sonoma county sheriff's office says that soda did have

an unknown substance in it. now they want to figure out exactly what it was and if it may have caused the death of this 14-year-old girl. the sheriff's office explained that this happened some time saturday night, early sunday morning just over the weekend. the teens got together for a sleepover. at some point in the night all four girls were violently ill and throwing up after drinking the soda. the parents at first thought it was just food poisoning but sunday morning when they try today wake one of the girls and she was not responding they called paramedics to the home and paramedics pronounced the girl had died. the sonoma county sheriff's detective violent crimes investigators are the ones looking into this death. we've made a request to speak with the investigators this morning and working other angles of the story trying to gather more information. for now live in santa rosa, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. overnight a fire damaged an elementary school. that fire started at skyline elementary in daly city.

ktvu channel reporter jade hernandez is out at the scene with a look now inside the classroom. jade. >> reporter: that's right. we want to take you right inside of the classroom that was damaged right here at skyline elementary. we've just learned that the supervisor of the facility is expected to be here at the school very soon. we don't know if the wet drizzling weather is going to effect repairs this morning. but we do know that supervisors should be here soon and we should be able to get more information about the damage inside of skyline. but for now our cameras captured books, chairs, audio- visual equipment all damaged in last night's fire. we checked in the with the north county fire authority. the department spokesman says investigators tried to determine whether this is a suspicious or intentionally set fire. fortunately students don't return to school until late august. this was a single alarm fire. firefighters said the fire appeared to have started outside of a portable building last night around 11:30.

within 15 minutes of arrival firefighters put out the flames. two battalion chiefs, six engines responded. now to give you a better idea where we are this morning the school is located on christian avenue surrounded by duplexes and other homes. fortunately the flames did not spread. no one was hurt. now we've also left a message for the south san francisco unified school district to get more information about repairs and what will have to be done before students come back to school right here in august. reporting live at skyline elementary in daly city, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. a robbery victim is recovering after getting shot last night in oakland. police say it happened after 10:00 at the area of west 16th street and chestnut. now the victim is walking with another person when two assailants attacked them. the gunman took some belongings, shot one of the victims. he is now hospitalized in stable condition. the armed robbers got away. protestest over a deadly

shooting involving bart police officers. it has been a week since a man was shot and killed in a confrontation at the civic center station in san francisco. coming up at 6:45 what changes one group will call for during a demonstration today. time now 6:34. community leaders in richmond calling for peace after three men were shot to death in an apartment. this happened saturday at the triangle court public housing complex. 36-year-old michael anderson of richmond, 19-year-old dante of oakland and 28-year-old cory walker jr. of sanely anadrol found dead. police say that shooting was a result of a drug deal gone bad. >> we definitely need an outpouring of concerned citizens in the city of richmond. >> police say all of the shooting erupted in the unit while a 6-year-old was playing in the next room. that 6-year-old was not hurt. police say there was a fourth man in the house who's being held now for questioning.

the shooting brought the total number of homicides within the past week in richmond to 6. thousands of people are expected at a funeral this morning for the baseball fan who died after falling over a railing during the texas rangers baseball game. 39-year-old firefighter shannon stone died thursday after his fall while the rangers were playing the oakland a's. stone was at the game with his 6-year-old son and he was trying to catch a foul ball thrown his way by rangers outfielder josh hamilton. representatives of the texas rangers are among those planning to attend this morning's funeral. time now 6:36. work on most of the new transbay transit center in san francisco will resume this morning two days after a construction worker was badly hurt on the job. the work is being stopped in the area where that worker hit a live power line saturday afternoon. this happened while he was relocating some underground power lines beneath fremont street between mission and howard. that worker suffered second degree burns but is expected to

make a full recovery. cal osha by the way has finished its investigation but they have not told us their findings. cal trans wants all of you drivers to move over. cal trans is launching a new public safety campaign today following the deaths of three cal trans workers in less than two months. the latest happened just a couple weeks ago in san diego. 52-year-old richard gonzalez was cleaning up trash along the connector ramp when he was hit by a car. the cal trans new campaign is encouraging drivers to follow the state's move over layoff. it requires all drivers to slow down and then move out of the lane. it happens to be next to where any cal trans workers are working. 6:37 is the time right now. let's check back in with sal. what are you keeping an eye on, sal? well, we're starting off looking at the san mateo bridge, pam. and looking at all the bay area bridges. they look pretty good right now. you can see the traffic is

moving nicely although it's overcast and going to be driving into some wet roads, some wet weather in san mateo county this morning. also parts of santa clara and san francisco little bit of wet weather. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza delay. that traffic is going to be backed up for a small delay. little bit of slowing here and there. no major issues getting on to the bridge it. looking at santa clara county northbound 101 and 2 0 still look pretty good on the hayward to union city commute. that traffic still looks light. and in contra costa county you have some stop and go traffic on highway 4 as you drive to the main part of that city. 6:38. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. very happy monday morning for those of you who like cool weather you can bow towards this west wind because it will be a strong west wind. a lot of low clouds and unseasonably strong low moving into oregon helping enhance our fog bank. so it's going to be a cool week compared to last week when it was hot for many inland areas. that will not with the the case

this week. low clouds, mist, drizzle out there. cooler, breezy to windy. this week looks very cool at least through wednesday and thursday. there are signs it will be a warmer pattern especially inland as we head towards the weekend, high pressure in the middle of the country dominating almost all the country might slide back to the west but a lot of lee time on that. a lot of fog out there. always a few breaks on the coast but it won't be very warm with 50s and 60s. in fact sitting at 52 napa 52, santa rosa 52. san rafael 53. 54 concord with gusts to 24 miles per hour. by the way in marin county on sunday morning lima valley 43. the coolest lows in july and august since pre-1997. so if you were around there and you thought my goodness -- well, it was. that was sunday morning. the low clouds kind of stopped the cooling but there was a no doubt about it cool pattern over the weekend for some. west-southwest to 21 fairfield. the direction the wind is coming from. from. that's a sea breeze. west 10 at sfo. west 14 at oakland and south-

sonoma county sheriff investigators want to know how a 14-year-old girl died during a weekend sleepover in santa rosa. the teenager and her friends began vomiting saturday night after drinking soda mixed with an unknown substance. the little girl did not wake up the following morning. a portable classroom at a daly city elementary school went up in flames. now the fire started late last night at skyline elementary. authorities don't know what started it. school opens in a little over a month from now. and a navy dive team could join the search effort today for seven fibber men missing off the coast of baja, california. the contra costa time reports the team was scheduled to arrive in mexico over the weekend. they'll conduct an underwater search of that fishing boat that sank more than a week ago. a popular east bay hiking trail is a crime scene for the second time in less than a week. ktvu's kraig debro joins us now from pittsburg where there was another shooting on the delta

trail overnight. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. and this one is off of railroad avenue i'd say about a quarter mile to half mile south of highway 4. behind me this is the area where the shooting happened overnight. we're going to point you to the sun for a second. you see two officers off in the distance walking down there. very little information from the officers on the scene. but the second shooting in less than a week is getting a lot of attention not just from the police but from the people who live around here. i spoke to the east bay regional park district dispatcher this morning. he told me that they actually got a call from contra costa county sheriff's office around six minutes to midnight that somebody had been shot here. we also have reports people who live in this area reported call 911 and police showed up at the scene. when they got here they saw what they were after, a man had been shot at this location. police didn't identify the man but they told us he's now being treated at medical center in walnut creek. that information is from overnight. we got to check back in to see if there's any changes on that. this trail has become less safer for a lot of people.

that's recreditly. last week we mentioned there was a shooting. we talked to a woman who attempt today use a part of the trail this morning turned back by officers. she says it's not uncommon for her to hear gunfire. >> between the hours of 12:00 and 3:00 i hear gunshots. i hear pop, pop, pop. but i say to myself it must be fire crackers. my grandson was with me one day and he told me, he says grandma that's gunshots. >> reporter: last week police say 20-year-old marcus jackson died of being shot in the back of the head. the pittsburg man was also on the trail. jackson was about -- he was funned down around 8:45 last wednesday night. he was walking on the trail near the atlantic and harbor streets about a quarter mile from here. still people who use this trail believe that even though that that man was targeted and that there's not a lot of violence here, they also have reason they say not to use this part of the trail especially at

night. reporting live in pittsburg, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. our time now 6:46. a group of demonstrators will stage a protest today at bart civic center station in san francisco. that is where bart police shot and killed a man last week. 45-year-old charles hill allegedly had a knife and a bottle before bart officers shot him last sunday. he later died at the hospital. a group called no justice no bart is calling for those officers involved to be fired. they also want the bart police department to be shut down. that protest will begin at 4:30 this afternoon. atlantis is acting as a giant delivery truck this morning. the space shuttle is delivering a 21-foot canister of food, clothing and other supplies to the international space station. now it's supposed to hold enough to keep the station crew going for a year. atlantis is the last u.s. space station -- space shuttle that is that will visit the space

station. and nasa's keeping an eye on some space junk that could pose a threat to the two spacecrafts. the piece of an old russian satellite will zip by the space station and atlantis tomorrow. that's during one of the planned space walks for the mission and it could be delayed. nasa says if the debris poses a problem, the thrusters on atlantis can be used to move them out of the way. all right. time now 6:48. cyclists in big cities like san francisco may develop heart problems. that's according to a new study from canada. it says cyclists who regularly ride in heavy traffic are often exposed to pollution from cars and trucks which could lead to heart problems. researchers say the risk is small and that cyclists should keep riding because it's really good exercise. however it's best to avoid very busy roads with a lot of traffic. all right. 6:48 is the time. speaking of traffic. let's check in with sal. any problems? well, we do have some slow traffic, pam and dave.

good morning to you. we are looking at some of the most critical roads in the bay area. you'll find that traffic on highway 4 for example is going to be slow in some areas as you drive up to the willow pass grade now getting word of a new crash nearby on highway 4 as you drive to the willow pass grade. also this morning we're looking at the commute on the east shore freeway on westbound interstate 80. that traffic is going to be okay. just want to mention that in contra costa county there are some slow downs on the richmond parkway because of some road work there. so watch for it. we'll get you a more precise location coming up in the next report. and this is a look at south bay. traffic is going to be okay on most of the south bay freeways. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. we have a big fog bank out there. yesterday -- yesterday, steve, last week. last week we had fog and couldn't move anywhere. high pressure put a cap on it. the high moved to the middle of the country and opened doors as the system moves into oregon lifts that fog.

70s inland. concord 72. san jose 75 santa rosa might be overdone on that. upper 70s or low 80s for a few. cooling continues tuesday into wednesday. looks like that low ejects out and starts to lift. as it does signs maybe the high will build back in towards the end of the week and weekend and more warmer inland temps. the quarterly earning season kicks off today after the closing bell. all koa what is expected to announce its second quarter profits more than doubled. that's as customers such as general motors and air bus drove up demand for aluminum. a lot of other companies report earnings as well. we'll hear from a lot of the banks and this week will be a busy one with earnings coming in. take a live look at the big board. the new york stock exchange. the dow down almost 120 points right now. 12,537. it shot right down at the sound of the opening bell. and that is still in response to our jobs report on friday.

washington today for the perjury trial of former major league baseball star roger clemens. now he's charged with six felonies for telling congress under oath he never used performance enhancing drugs. now he's standing by that. the prosecutors say they can prove he lied. opening statements are set for wednesday. san carlos is the latest city to eye a ban on plastic bags and foam food containers. city council will discuss the issue at tonight's meeting. environmentalists say foam take out containers often end up as litter and can be adjusted by wildlife. marin county, burlingame, mill brae, oakland and berkeley already have foam bans in place. time now 6:56. lake tahoe both the locals and tourists are seeing the beaches shrink this summer. it's because of the rising water levels after more than 61 feet of snow fell in the sierra nevada this season. now the lake level right now is about five feet above tahoe's natural rim.
