over there in that area where the t third mine runs. that's where police say that 19- year-old was a fare evader. they say the 19-year-old took off on foot. >> during the course of the foot pursuit, as this point, we believe the suspect fired backwards at the officers. the officers returned fire in self-defense. >> reporter: a viewer emailed a link to this video at ktvu. it shows what the videographer shows as a handgun. witnesses have questions about whether the 19-year-old really had a weapon at the time of the shooting. >> i think the police of san francisco is trying to cover their behinds. you got to find the weapon. you claim you had one, you got to find it.

>> reporter: this is new video from overnight, the issue spilled out of the bay view and into the mission district. a group of protesters took to the streets angry about the deadly police shooting. those protesters up ended garbage cans, and newspaper racks. so far, san francisco police have not released the name of the young man they shot yesterday, we will continue to follow up on this story, and bring you updates throughout the morning. for right now, we're live in san francisco. friends and family of the young man found shot to death at a hayward gas station are coming together to remember his knife. police have no one in custody, caldwell was best friends with the late officer grant. the two were at the fruitvale bart station, when grant died in a police shooting. >> they were good friends, and

were helping to help my niece. right next to each other. they were friends in life, and they'll be friends in death. >> reporter: there is still a $5 million civil rights lawsuit filed by caldwell, pending against bart. a woman was hit and killed by a minivan overnight. a woman was struck in the southbound direction of old monterey highway. she was declared dead at the scene. investigators say the driver of the minivan stopped and stayed to talk to investigators. it's still unknown what caused that accident. a 12-year-old boy is recovering after being hit while riding his bike in san jose. the boy was taken to santa clara valley medical center with life-threatening jeers, but we're now told he is expected to pull through. that accident remains under

investigation. a series of death threats were left on the voice mail of barbara boxer last week. police arrested kevin o'connell as his home and booked him into the county jail. bail stands at half a million dollars. he is scheduled to make his first court appearance on tuesday. the august 2 deadline to raise the nation's debt ceiling is getting closer. those talks are not expected to include congressional leaders or president obama. big spending cuts are likely to be part of any deal. however, proem also wants tax increases on the wealthy to be included. republicans have argued against any tax hikes. after three years hinds

bars, casey an none -- behind bars, casey anthony is a free woman. a jury acquitted her earlier this month of killing her daughter caylee. it is not clear where they is now. security experts say anthony needs to keep a low profile, due to the anger caused over her verdict. her release caused brief chaos. look at that large crowd, they had gather today see the woman walk out as a free woman. it is similar to that of a large crowd that gathered outside an orlando court room to see the trial. but in that crowd were angry protesters, because they believe she's getting away. >> a 6-year-old would have made a more conscious effort and decision than what they did. >> to boycott casey. that she gets no money. >> most people outside that courthouse say they did not

despite fears of carmageddon, the weekend traffic is moving. we should mention that 405 shut dune on friday night. so -- shut down on friday night. so crews could demolish part of a bridge. that freeway is a major traffic artery, which carries thousands of cars every day. with the closures, many were afraid surface streets and other freeways would clog up. >> what we want to emphasize to people is, its working. its working because they're cooperating. they're stating away from -- staying away from the west side. >> the 405 freeway is scheduled to reopen tomorrow morning, just in time for that morning rush hour commute. jetblue airlines selling $4 flights between long beach and burbank, and that inspired a so- called carmageddon competition. cyclists and a passenger raced to find out who could make that

trip the fastest. those cyclists won. they made that trip in about 90 minutes. at that point, that jetblue passenger hadn't even taken off from burbank. the rest of the country is facing another hike. several airlines announced they're raising domestic fares. going to go up by 4 to $10. the last time the industry implemented this type of broad increase was back in april. this week, republican presidential candidates will debate each other, and they will be getting their questions via twitter. the teaparty.net website is hosting the first ever presidential debate on wednesday. users will be able to tweet their answers in 140 characters or less.

republican presidential hopeful ron paul is on the campaign trail this weekend. the texas congressman spent some time talking to potential voters at a coffee shop in new hampshire. he says he's been focused on the nation's growing deficit. he said the debt ceiling should not be increased. and campaigning on a harley yesterday in salt lake city. this is huntsman's first visit to salt lake city. mitt romney pulling almost 70 points ahead of huntsman among voters. secretary of state hillary rodham clinton lend as helping hand to greece. she is in athens this morning, to show american support for the financial crisis. greece is working with the european union. she visits india tomorrow, and later indonesia, hong kong, and

china. recent bombings in mumbai fueled speculation she would cancel her trip to southeast asia. but she said the u.s. most show solidarity with india. china is criticizing president obama today for his meeting with the dalai lama. he reiterated that the u.s. does not support independence for tibet. china accuses of dalai lama of being a separatist. earlier this year, he stepped down from his political role, and says he is now only the spiritual leader of the tibetens. the country's biggest supermarket chain admits it sold beef from cattle that ate nuclear contaminated feed.

most of the week. 90s expected for some spots on thursday. warmer inland, the coast still rather cool. mid-60s for your thursday. back to you. well, about 200 active duty troops and veterans marched in san diego's gay pride parade. they wore shirts declaring their branch of service. parade organizers think this is the first time a military contingent participated in the event. on friday, a federal appeal's court temporarily reinstated the don't ask, don't tell policy. by the military will lift that ban within the next few weeks. it all started with one box shipped off to a long time friend, a commander at war for one bay area man. that one box has now grown in the last year to two tons of supplies a month being sent directly to american forces on

the frontlines. >> it's 130 degrees over there in summer time, and they're drinking well water. >> he founded troops direct. >> they need it, we can get it there teams faster fan internal military supply lines can. >> he says he packs 50-pound boxes, filled with gear, hygiene, nutrition, medical support, even tennis balls for k-9 troops. >> we send over chalk powder that our servicemen are using to identify where roadside bombs are in place. in worst case scenarios, they're using bottle caps. >> in one instance, his sergeant told him, they were pinned down by enemy fire in rugged terrain for an extended period of time. >> knowing what was in those boxing would keep them going. in the end, they are were

first, friends and family members of the woman who's body was found in rockwood are raising a fundraiser this morning. her burned body was discovered on thursday. investigators are following several leads in her death, but so far, no arrests have been made, today's fundraiser begins at 11:00 a.m. at the east lake, ymca in oakland. the money raised will go forward funeral costs and a trust that has been set up for her 1-year-old son. a richmond neighborhood is working to improve its image. residents in the city's iron triangle neighborhood. police say a $5 million redevelopment grant transformed a park and community center into a safe place for residents. >> we came together, and decided to change the dynamic of this park to improve the conditions of this park to make

a better place. >> city leaders hope yesterday's event encouraging politicians not to cut funding to much needed redevelopment projects. if you need it, baseball will come to san rafael. the city council tomorrow is going to consider a proposal that would allow a company to renovate albert park baseball field. doing that would bring a minor league team to san rafael. opponents are concerned about alcohol consumption, and increased traffic. san francisco's golden gate park along with other city parks may soon have new business partners. the examiner reports, the recreation, and parks department is considering allowing new businesses to reopen to allow new revenue. the city of south san francisco wants to snuff out teen smoking. councilmembers tell the san francisco examiner, they do not

want a second smoking shop, so the city extended a ban on issuing permits for stores that sell tobacco. city officials are also considering anti-smoking campaigns. firefighters will conduct a prescribed burn along the peninsula tomorrow morning. cal fire crews and researchers from stanford university will use the burn to study the impacts of fire retardants. just over one acre of grassland will be burned. cal fire says it should only take about one hour. contra coste county investigators are looking for vandals who popped over more than a dozen fire hydrants. authorities say fire hydrants were open some time between friday night, and saturday morning. fire officials say this is not a harmless prank, because if hydrants are damaged, they could be unavailable in an emergency. firefighters in oakland are investigating a small fire at a

school on wester street near 17th yesterday morning. crews say the fire was contained to the basement at armstrong university, which made it more difficult to fight. about 75 to 80 firefighters responded. firefighters say they believe the cause of the fire was accidental, but it's still under investigation. time now 7:32. people who want to see san francisco mayor ed lee stay on the job made a new push this weekend. >> ed lee, we've got your back, yeah. >> reporter: members of run ed run walked the streets in the bay view. lee has said he wants to return to his old city administrator post when he returns. >> we need to work together and ed is the one who can promote the rational harmony that we need in the city that has been lacking for years and years. >> members of run ed run have until august 12 to convince ed

lee to run for mayor. fallout does continue over that police involved shooting in san francisco that left a 19- year-old man dead. big questions remain about what the man was doing when he was shot. this morning, ktvu's christian trappen has the latest from san francisco, including new cell phone video of the aftermath. >> reporter: we're here at the intersection of 3rd and oakdale. this is where that shooting happened, and the young man actually wound up right next to that black car, where that black car is sitting. the incident started over there in that area, the platform you can see for the t 3rd line. police say that 19-year-old was a fare evader, and that the young man took off on foot. >> during the course of the foot pursuit, we believe the suspect fired backwards at the officers. the officers returned fire in self-defense. >> reporter: now, a viewer emailed a link to this video to

ktvu shot moments after that shooting. a handgun on the ground, and identifies a bistander as a man who picked up a cell phone and that gun, and walked away from the scene. >> i think the police of san francisco is trying to cover their behinds. you got to find a weapon. you claim you had one, you got to find one. >> reporter: now this is new video from last night. the issue now spilling out of the bay view into the mission direct. they took to the streets at 19th and valencia, angry by the deadly police shooting. that went on until about 1:00 this morning. now we have had several neighbors here in the area come and tell us, there has been a very difficult relationship in this neighborhood between san francisco police and many of the neighbors here. they said there are many police

officers who don't have the people skills necessary to handle this neighborhood. we'll hear more from them later on this morning. meanwhile, we're still looking to hear from san francisco police about the identity of the 19-year-old who wound up dead. we should know about this afternoon, if the nation's second largest bookstore chain is going to go under. borders has until 5:00 p.m. to find a buyer. borders closed more than 200 stores nationwide, after it filed for bankruptcy in february. there are stores at san francisco's galleria, palo alto and sunnyvale. apple's next generation iphone is apparently going to run on all carriers. those carriers, along with at&t and verizon are beta testing

month after surgeons removed a cancerous tumor. in peru, archeologists discovered an unspoiled tomb. archeologists say the area is the first time they've found a figure in such a well preserved state. they also found a number of pieces of ceramic, and pottery, as well as the remains of three other people, the tomb date bask to around 1350 to 1400. the phone hacking scandal continues for rupert murdoch and news corps. london police arrested rebekah brooks today. brooks led murdoch's news international division, until this past friday when she resigned. she is facing charges for phone hackings that targeted celebrities, the families of 9/11 victims, as well as the

a 13-year-old colorado boy is recovering after a terrifying bear attack. he was camping when the bear went into his tent in the middle of the night, looking for food. the boy woke up to find the 200- pound black bear biting his left leg.

>> luckily, my pajamas just broke and so, he just took my pajamas. >> park rangers used tracking dogs to hunt down the bear. they then shot it, fearing the animal would go after other people. two people were hurt from a train derailment in minnesota. it happened north of minneapolis. material did spill out onto those tracks. that drain belonged to the burlington santa fe company. an investigation is underway. more than 1300 motorcycle crashes occurred in the bay area in 2009. tomorrow, all state insurance is going to post caution signs at one of the dangerous intersections. the caution signs are yellow, diamond shaped with a black

comeback, starting with suzuki's run. the a's rally fell short, bobby abreu gave the angels an issuance run. game 2 was a close one. the a's had a one run lead in the 6th inning, vernon wells changed that with a solo home run to left to tie the game at 3. the game would stay tied until the 10th inning, the a's won, 4-3. 35-year-old levi aaron says he can hear voices in his head. authorities say he suffocated an 8-year-old, and stuffed his body parts in a refrigerator and dumpster. investigators are looking into whether he may have committed

bay view and into the mission district, where the protests erupted overnight. this is new video into ktvu overnight. a group of protesters angrily about the deadly shooting. those protesters upended garbage cans and newspaper racks. that lasted until about 1:00 a.m. a viewer uploaded video highlighting a handgun lying on the ground. the videographer says a man in a hoody picked up that cell phone and handgun. police say the 19-year-old was a fare evader. >> we believe the suspect fired backwards at the officers. the officers returned fire in self-defense. >> reporter: but witnesses in the area tell ktvu, they have

doubts that the young man had a weapon, and say they believe he was targeted by police. >> it ended up with a chase, with them shooting him in his back. shot him down like an animal. >> reporter: just this morning, we've had several people in the neighborhood tell us, san francisco police have a troubled relationship with this area. they say there have a lot of new officers in the area who don't have the people skills necessary for police work. we'll have more on that coming up in the next half hour. we're still waiting to hear the identity of that man killed in the officer involved shooting yesterday afternoon. we're live in san francisco, ktvu, channel 2 news. time now, 8:03, friends and family of a young man found shot to death are coming together to remember his life. a candlelight memorial now stands at the 76 station where

johntue caldwell was shot. >> they were good friends. thanks to oscar's mom, for helping to help my niece get the plot. right next to each other. they were friends in life, and they'll be friends in death and hopefully in heaven. new this morning, a woman died after being hit by a minivan in san jose. police say the victim was struck on southbound monterey highway, close to old tuley road, just before 10:00 last night. investigators say the driver of the minivan did stop, and stayed to talk to investigators. the cause of the crash is under investigation. a 12-year-old boy is recovering after being hit while riding his bicycle in san jose. police say the boy was taken to santa clara valley medical center with life-threatening injuries. we're now told doctors expect

him to pull through. police questioned a driver at the scene, but released her without any charges. the accident remains under investigation. casey anthony is a free woman. a jury acquitted her earlier this month of killing her 2- year-old daughter caylee. it's believed anthony may have boarded a jet at the orlando airport, but it's not clear where she is now. security experts say anthony needs to keep a low profile. back at the orlando jail take a look at that crowd. casey anthony's release caused some brief chaos. this is a similar picture to what we've seen. in the crowd overnight, protesters were there who were upset, because they believe she is getting away with murder. >> she had such a jury trial that was a bunch of jokes. a 6-year-old would have made a

more conscious effort and decision than what they actually did. >> to boycott casey. that she gets no money. >> most people outside the courthouse said she did not agree with the verdict. others say the judicial system did its job. the august 2 deadline is getting closer, and so far, there is still no deal. talks are not expected to include congressional leaders or president obama. big spending cuts are likely to be part of any deal. however, president obama wants tax increases on the wealthy to be included. republicans have argued against any tax hikes. good morning to you. we are dealing with the gray once again. we will have slow clearing over the bay. and a live look outside our doors, even dealing with a little bit of light drizzle outside. if you are getting out early,

people is, it's working. it's working because they're cooperating. they're staying away from the west side. >> the 405 freeway is scheduled to reopen tomorrow morning, just in time for that rush hour commute. jetblue airlines decided they were going to help southland residents get around this weekend, by selling $4 flights that took you between long beach and burbank. that inspired a so-called carmageddon competition. passengers and bicyclists raced to find out who could make that trip fastest. cyclists won, they made the trip in about 90 minutes. at that point, the jetblue passenger hadn't even taken off for burbank. the republican candidates will be getting questions via twitter. users will be able to tweet

candidates their questions in 180 characters or less. republican presidential hopeful, ron paul is on the campaign trail this weekend. he spent some time talking to voters at a coffee shop in new hampshire yesterday. he says he is focused on the nation's growing deficit, and said that debt ceiling should not be increased. john huntsman pulled into salt lake city on a harley. despite being the former governor, a new public poll shows mitt romney pulling ahead. secretary of state, hillary clinton is landing a helping hand to greece. she is in athens to show

america's support for the financial crisis. clinton is on the second leg of a 12 day around the world diplomatic tour. she visits india tomorrow, and later indonesia, hong kong, and china. she says the u.s. must show solidarity with india. chinese officials are angry with president obama this morning after he met with the dalai lama. they met for about 45 minutes yesterday, praising him for embracing nonviolence. however, mr. obama reiterated that the united states does not support independence for tibet. china accuses the dalai lama of being a separatist. earlier this year, the dalai

lama said he is now only the spiritual leader of the tibetens. the crew aboard the space shuttle atlantis is preparing to head back to earth. atlantis is scheduled to land in florida on thursday, capping the end of the 30 year shuttle program. part of the country is dealing with extreme heat this morning. temperatures in some areas are 15 degrees higher than normal. the blistering heat has prompted health warnings in cities such as milwaukee. the mayor has even designated eight cool spots where sprinklers will continuey run at parks. >> for children of alages, get out here, underneath the water. use the sprinkles, use the pools. forecasters predict the hot weather will spread into the

mid-atlantic in the next few days. wednesday's storm damaged almost 1/3 of frontier's airbus fleet. those are moving around the country to be repaired. >> aircraft skin very delicate. it's the structures underneath the skin that give the airlines its strength. >> travelers should expect delays. frontier is waving change fees for those who need to reschedule. several airlines announced this week they're raising domestic fares. united, continental, and delta said fares are going up by 4 to $10. a u.s. senator says if airlines do not start

that train belongs to the burlington northern santa fe company. the company says it's going to take a clear the track. right now, it's believed heavy rain swept away the train track foundation and that led to that derailment. a 13-year-old colorado boy is recovering after a bear attack. rick vas was camping when the bear went into his tent in the middle of the night, apparently looking for food. the boy woke up to find the 200- pound male black bear biting his left leg. >> he tried to pull me out at one point. luckily, my pajamas just broke, so he just took my pajamas. >> park rangers used tracking to hunt down the bear and killed it fearing an attack on other people. a bald eagle will sooning flying high again. the eagle's name is patriot. this past week, the vet jumped

this morning, the investigation is underway into a fatal officer involved shooting in san francisco. that shooting left a 19-year- old man dead in san francisco's bay view district. >> reporter: we are just about a block away from that muni rail stop. we're at oakdale and third here. this is where that shooting incident wound up. the 19-year-old who was shot by police officers wound up just on the other side of that chain barrier over there. this did start on the t 3rd line over there. police say officers detained the young man briefly, and said

the young man took off on foot. >> during the course of the foot pursuit, at this point, we believe the suspect fired back at the officers. the officers returned fire, in self-defense. >> reporter: officers told us the incident started because they believed that young man was a fare evader. a viewer linked an email to this video. it shows what the videographer says is a handgun on the growpt. we've had several people come to us this morning to tell us, san francisco police are too quick to resolve violence in the bay district. >> we have had many about 50 new officers in this area that have been assigned to come to this area to get to work. it's getting worses.

they overreact when they come out. >> reporter: now this issue has spilled out of the bay view and into the mission district. this is new video shot last night of protesters angry at the deadly police shooting. those protesters upended garbage cans and newspaper racks. that lasted until about 1:00 this morning. so far, san francisco police are still not releasing the name of the man who died in the shooting. a san rafael man faces a charge of threatening the life of barbara boxer. an investigation identified the caller as 47-year-old kevin joseph o'connell. police arrested him at his home, and booked him into jail. bail stands at half a million dollars. he is scheduled to make his

first court appearance on tuesday. officials are trying to figure out who opened more than a dozen fire hydrants. authorities say they were opened overnight friday. fire officials say this is not a harmless prank. if hydrants are damaged, they could be unavailable in emergency. firefighters in oakland are investigating a fire at a school building near webster and 17th streets. police say the fire at armstrong university was contained to the basement, which made it more difficult to fight. about 70, to 80 firefighters responded. firefighters say they believe the fire was accidental, but the cause is still under investigation. friends and family members of a woman who's body was found in oakland's rockridge neighborhood are holding a fumed razor today. her burned body was discovered on thursday. investigators say they're following several leads in her death. so far, no arrests have been

made. today's car wash fundraiser begins at 11:00 a.m. the money raised is going to go towards funeral costs and a trust fund that has been set up for her young son. residents in the iron triangle neighborhood held a fundraiser. police say a $5 million redevelopment grant transformed a park and community center. >> we came together and decided to change the dynamic of this park to make it a better place. >> city leaders hope yesterday's event encourages state politicians not to cut funding to much needed redevelopment projects. more than 1300 crashes occurred in the bay area in 2009. tomorrow, all state insurance

daughter. live in orlando, where anthony was released. >> reporter: where casey anthony is at this hour is anybody's guess at this point. her attorneys were successful at throwing members of the media off in the overnight hours. the helicopters and folks on the ground lost site of her. video of her leaving the orange county jail, walking out the front door, wearing a pink polo shirt, and her hair in a bun. her primary attorney by her side. they got into a motorcade. a gray suburban, a cream colored chevy tahoe, with a white follow car, then drove to the bank of america parking garage in downtown orlando, where her other attorney has an office. it is there where they did a

bait and switch. the suv never reemerged, but other ones did. it's not clear where casey anthony went. at the same time, there was police activity across town at the orlando executive airport. a private plane was fueled up, and ready to go on the runway. no one physically saw casey anthony getting into that aircraft. a crowd of about 300 protesters gathered outside of the jail when anthony left, there was a heavy police presence. in fact, some officers on horseback. protesters holding signs and chanting things like baby killer. at this point, there have been a tremendous amount of rumors. we've heard everything from puerto rico to new york to

visiting her aunt in texas. we simply don't know. mum is the word. the attorneys not disclosing any of that information because they say her safety is key here. >> i'm hearing there are actually two flights leaving that orlando airport. >> reporter: that's what's little bit confusing. there was a flight at 1:00 a.m., and then a flight at 3:00 a.m. again, the one at 1:00, according to the officials were warying golf clubs. then a group of golfers here on vacation in florida, and were flying back to ohio. we do understand the flight plans were not required to be made public. it is possible that casey anthony was on that 3:00 a.m. flight. it was really difficult to tell, despite the media staking out that area, and the police helicopters. no one physically saw casey anthony getting onboard a plane, but anything is possible

at this point. they did a really good job last night of eluding the media. normally, we're good at tracking that kind of stuff. no one knows where she wound up. kind of bizarre, vanishing in the night. people who want to see san francisco mayor ed lee stay on the job made a new push this weekend. >> ed lee, we got your back, yeah. >> members of run, ed, run walked the streets in the bay area yesterday. lee has said he wants to return to his old city administrator post when he finishes his term. members say lee is the only person who can unify san francisco. >> we need to work together, and ed is the one who can promote that racial harmony that we need in the city that has been lacking for years and years. >> members of run ed run have

day, even a little bit of drizzle over parts of the bay area this morning. we do have some breaking news right now from southern california. several los angeles stations are reporting the 405 freeway is going to reopen today. that's a day early. take a live look. you can see, looks like things are pretty calm there. reports say the roadway is going to open sometime between 11:00 a.m. this morning, and 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon. we're expected too hear an exact time a little later. the 405 shut down late friday night, so a bridge could be demolished. the demolition work has been ahead of schedule all weekend, and the gridlock feared because of the closure has not been seen. we've also just learned in the last 10 minutes, president

obama will nominate ex-ohio attorney journal to head the financial economy. last year, president obama appointed elizabeth warren. new this morning, militants are demanding a ransom, after kidnapping a filipino born u.s. citizen. officials say the two americans were allowed to talk briefly to their family back in virginia. the suspected kidnappers are members of a group known to be linked to al-qaeda. coalition forces have killed at least 13 fighters in afghanistan. the shootout ended after a nato air strike. there are no coalition
