danger. she was living with the son in ashland when police say she was kidnapped by another son. that suspect is 55-year-old marshall mcmains goldberg. the f.b.i. says goldberg has ties with daily city and los angeles and may have traveled to one of those cities. they say goldberg might be driving a 1996 gold oldsmobile sedan with the california license plate no. 3 s z y o23. mu indications about -- new indications about whether san francisco mayor ed lee is planning on entering the race and running for a full time. >> reporter: what the mayor told us indicates he's radically rethinking his position. san francisco groups have been pushing ed lee to run for the office this fall. women for ed lee made their pitch today. >> i'm not aware that have particular -- of that particular

motive or a suspect. in less than an hour, the san francisco police chief will be meeting with some angry residents in the bay view upset over the deadly police shooting that happened this past weekend. >> reporter: frank, the meeting will take place here at the bay view opera house and i talked with san francisco police a short time ago, and they say the police chief may tonight reveal even more evidence this this shooting, all in the hopes of clearing up misconceptions in a case that has riled some in this community. this is market street last night, a small riot, there was vandalism as 150 people crawled market street. the march was sparked by the saturday night shooting in the bay view of 19-year-old kenneth harding. some of angry despite police attempts to explain the circumstances. >> this individual acted dangerously, he shot at the officers and the public safety

ktvu channel 2 news. just about an hour ago san francisco police gave us these new numbers, police arrested 43 people or failure to obey an order of a officer and pedestrians walking in a roadway. 17 were from san francisco but 26 came from cities throughout california, one was actually from out of state. a police spokesperson told us they are still investigating the property damage and the vandalism that took place at the bank of america and at a muni station and said there may be more arrests and charges. a new report finds there's been a big spike in the number of police officers killed in the line of duty and that california is the fourth deadliest state for such deaths. the national law enforcement officers fund said 98 officers have died from january 1st, that's a 14% jump. in california, five officers have died this year. the police say the recession forced them to cut budgets.

>> we're putting officers at greater risks because we're not giving them the resources they need to do their jobs effectively and safely. >> one of the five californiaance who died in the line of duty was thomas evans of sacramento. he was killed in february in a traffic accident. a bicyclist was hit this morning. the accident happened just after 8 a.m. at mission and fremont streets. that's an area that is posted with signs limiting turns to taxis and busses. police also say the 26-year-old cyclist was not wearing a helmet. >> everybody has to share the roadway, everybody should be cautious, you should always wear safety equipment. it's commute hours, take your time, slow down a little bit, look around you, turn your head, make sure you see. that goes for bicyclists and motorists as well. >> the truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with

police. officers are looking at surveillance video from a nearby business and also say the accident does not appear to involve drugs or alcohol. the family of giants fan brian stow said he underwent emergency surgery earlier this week. a post on the family's website said doctors performed the surgery after fluid built up in stow's head. doctors removed a growth they discovered and installed a device to drain the fluid. president obama's wrapping up a #234rury of late -- flurry of late afternoon meetings as a glimmer of hope appears in the stalemate. earlier today, the bipartisan group of senators known as the gang of 6 briefd lawmakers on their proposal. it calls for new taxes which republicans have opposed and cuts to medicare and other entitlements which democrats oppose. but the president's spokesman says it's the kind of compromise the president is seeking. >> as long as there's political will, the details, there's enough substance out there for a

package to be crafted. >> congress faces an august 2nd deadline to raise the debt ceiling or risk government default. sales of existing homes slipped to a 7-month low. a new report from the national association of realtors said home sales fell 0.8% last month to an annual rate of 4.77 million homes. the realtors group said the unexpected downturn was due in part to a record increase in cancellations of pending contracts. analysts say that could be due to jitters from the poor economy or because of tighter lending conditions. people who live in oakland will be voting on a parcel tax this fall. the city council voted yesterday to make the parcel tax part of a special all-mail election on november 15th. if approved by two-thirds ftd voters, it will -- of the voters, it will raise taxes for libraries and rec centers.

the dow jones industrial gave back some of yesterday's gains today. all those reports of progress sort of debt limit agreement fueled the rally but word that a washington is still in a stalemate today damped enthusiasm. the nasdaq closed down 12, the dow dropped 15 points. investigators in mountain view are trying to determine what started a fire at a u-haul parking lot. coming up, we'll tell you why some believe it could be connected to gas thieves. sunny skies and warm temperatures across the entire bay area today. coming up, i'll let you know when the fog returns and the temperature change you can expect for tomorrow.

are what delayed the recovery. we have new information tonight on a mountain view fire that we first told you about this morning. sources close to the arson investigation tells ktvu that the fire on a u-haul lot was not an accident. fire investigators surveyed surveillance video and found leads in the case. >> reporter: flames broke out after midnight at this u-haul lot where propane tanks are store $, forcing crews to evacuate two dozen people living nearby. >> my brother lives downstairs and he's disabled, so our first thought was to get him out. >> reporter: no one was hurt but crews had a tough time getting to the flames. they had to cut a hole in a fence. >> the access was a definite difficulty for us. we had to stretch multiple two and a half inch lines probably 250 to 400 feet back there.

>> reporter: engines couldn't get through to the lot's entrance, it was blocked by u-haul trucks parked there on purpose to ward off gas thieves. >> they have stolen, siphoned gas out of 15 to 20 trucks at a time. >> reporter: the manager says thieves have stolen $30,000 worth of gas from his trucks in the past few months. if you take a look behind me, you can see the area where seven trucks got torched, one sustained minor damage. an open gas cap may provide clues. it is unknown who opened it. mountain view police are also investigating the gas thefts. >> you know, when we have gas prices what they are, we see gas siphoning go up in all levels, whether it's just an individual siphoning gas out of a car or more of an organized thing and from what i understand other places have been targeted as well, other u-hauls in the area.

>> the arson task force spent the whole day on the fire scene. the team included a dog named rosy. she was able to sniff out to see if any sell rant might be -- ak sell rant might be at the fire scene. in roseville up near sacramento, police are looking for four people who they're calling the toilet paper arsonists. authorities say those four have tried to set fire to several homes. they were caught on tape by our surveillance camera lighting rolls of toilet paper and then throwing them into dry brush near homes. the video was taken on july 4th by a neighborhood security camera along a well-used walking trail but it was actually kids who spotted the fires and alerted a parent. >> i got over here as quick as i could with a shovel and found four different areas of toilet paper rolls over here. >> reporter: on fire? >> on fire. i could not get this one put out, it was already the size of my front yard. >> firefighters responded in

time to put out the fire and were able to keep it from damaging any homes. there was hope earlier today that the nfl lockout could be coming to an ends but that hope has faded for the day. a person familiar with the nfl negotiations says the players will not vote today on a deal. there appears to be more work needed to finalize an agreement between owners and players. players and representatives from all 32 teams met in washington. lots of players are having to find other things to do while they sit out. marcelle darius made a name for himself by mowing down quarterbacks in college. now you can see he's mowing lawns while he waits for the strike to be over. he works with his godfather in birmingham, alabama. the nfl is being sued. not over the lockout but over concussions. coming up at 5:45, who's accusing the league of lying for 90 years. the nation's mid section, boy, it continues to swelter from that massive heat wave.

for days now, people have been trying to find ways to stay cool in cities like chicago where the heat index has topped 100 degrees. a heat advisory has been declared this two dozen states with 22 deaths blamed on the hot weather. a huge area of high pressure is trapping that heat in the midwest. and on the east coast, thousands headed to the beach to try and beat the heat. the national weather service today issued excessive heat watches for a number of eastern states, including new york, pennsylvania and maryland. that means a forecast for temperatures of 105 degrees or more. meteorologists predict the heat will grip the mid-atlantic states right on through sunday. here in the bay area, we're one of the hottest parts of the week. there is some relief in sight? into the weekend a completely different weather pattern as a cool onshore breeze increases. i can show you this, you were talking about the heat in the nation's mid section, in chicago

it's 94 degrees, st. louis at 97. back here in the bay area, we have clear skies, there's the fog bank to our south, mainly to the south of monterey bay and we have a northerly wind that's pushed the low cloud deck way to the south and as a result we warmed up nicely today. in fact, here's a look at the current numbers out there. san francisco has cooled off five degrees over the past hour, right now at 66. 90s still reported at santa rosa, fairfield, livermore, san jose reporting 86 degrees. for this evening, we'll wall kaul it warm, mid-60s to the mid-80s. 8:00, still clear and mild and then by 10:00 tonight, still mostly clear skies as temperatures back down into the mid-50s for the beaches. inland areas will still be in the mid-60s. overnight lows tomorrow morning with partly cloudy skies, we could have patchy fog, mainly to the coast lines to the south of

the bridge. temperatures will start out tomorrow morning, thursday morning, most areas in the 50s, right around 60 toward fairfield and right around antioch. in the afternoon, low to mid-60s for the beaches as we head toward downtown san francisco, in the lower 70s. across the bay, you'll find more 70s and eventually warming back up into the lower 80s so, tomorrow a little cooler than today but we will still have some lower 90s around antioch. tomorrow, mostly sunny skies and warm numbers, you can see the temperature time line by lunch time 8o degrees. coming up, i'll highlight the neighborhoods that will warm into the 90s tomorrow afternoon and the big change you can expect for the upcoming weekend forecast. another breakup for tiger woods. in this case he's parting ways with his long-time caddy steve williams. woods made the announcement on his website ta he and williams

the state government shutdown ended today in minnesota nearly three weeks after it began. govern mark dayton signed a new state budget. dayton is a democratic and has been at odds with republican lawmakers over the plan. both sides say the budget isn't what they wanted but they felt they had ends the shutdown which had left 22,000 state workers without a paycheck and a number of government services shut down. the defense of marriage act came under fire on capitol hill today. advocates pleaded with congress to give gay couples the right to say i do. >> we're as good a couple as any other couple but as far as the federal government is concerned, we were not, we were strangers in fact under the law. >> this must change, that's what

tonight something you don't see very often aride along in an antidrug helicopter searching for marijuana plants hidden in the hills. ktvu mauerry hills tells us drug agents found what they were looking for. >> reporter: the campaigning against marijuana growth has been launched. today taking us up in a helicopter in mount madonna park to access an illegal grow hidden in the terrain. we soon saw a clearing in the trees. an estimated 10,000 plants are said to be growing in this area. authorities say the crops of smaller than normal because of the cool weather. >> these are big gross, very sophisticated. >> reporter: and very dangerous

driver in santa clara. the collision happened about a 5:30 a.m. the chp says the driver of a green dodge caravan was driving wrecklessly and hit both a motorcycle and another vehicle. the person on the motorcycle was killed. the driver in the van took off on foot. vallejo police are investigating the death of a woman found in a motel parking lot. when they arrived at the dleks inn they found a 30-year-old woman with a fatal gunshot wound. her name is not being released until a relative is notified. investigators are checking to see if there's a surveillance video to help. sheriffs are hoping witnesses will step forward as they investigate a break in at the wood side village church. investigators say the thiefs pried open a door and stole thousands of dollars of sound

equipment. republican presidential candidate michelle bachman says she will only submit balanced budgets but she stopped short of promising she will veto bills against a budget deficit. she focused on how they she plans to, quote, get our fiscal house in order. >> well, last night i was in washington d.c., and i was leading on the issue of the debt ceiling. i voted no on increasing the debt by 2-1/2 trillion dollars. >> bachman signed the so-called cut, cap and balance pledge on monday. as for the headaches? bachman release adler today from the attending physician of the u.s. congress, it says bachman's headaches are infrequent. according to the rasmussen

poll, 43% of likely voters would support mitt romney compared to 42% who would support the president. the president led the gop front runner by five points just this last april. we have some sad news tonight, former all pro san francisco 49ers center, forest blue has died at the age of 65. he was a four-time pro bowl center and helped the 49ers win three straight division titles back in the early '70s. now he will help scientists study degenre tiff brain disease. the "san francisco chronicle" reports that he has donated his brain to boston university. researchers there are studying the effects of injuries to football players. dozens of nfl players are claiming football owners covered up dangers of head injuries as a result of serious hits on the

the tsa is changing the software on its airport body scanners to make them less invasive to your privacy. this is the machine being tested in las vegas last february. it provides an outline of the person's body as opposed to a more detailed view with the old software, and if you're going through the machine, you'll actually be able to see the same image that the tsa screeners see. american airlines announced today it plans to add airbus to its new fleet. american is ordering 460 jets. the $37 billion deal will be split between boeing and airbus. the airline says the new fuel efficient jets will be able to reduce its operating and fuel costs without cutting services to members. intel corporation today beat wall street $forecast and reported record quarterly sales. the world's largest ship maker

said its net income rose to $3 billion or 54 cents per share. that's up 2% from a year ago. analysts expected intel to report flat earnings. the company says sales were fueled by strong corporate demand and the surge in mobile devices. the results are considered a good indicator of the entire pc market. shares of the real estate market zillo skyrocketed today. zilo soared to as much as $60 a share tonight. it soared from its ipo price of $20. zillo provides housing value appraisals kahn line and is the latest of a string of internet firms to create a market frenzy in its first day of trading. past studies and society in general say that kids are better off being raised by married

parents. a new british survey has added a little twist to that long-held belief. researchers say married couples in general are better educated and healthier and more fangsly secure than unird -- more financially secure. but scientists say children can suffer if their parents are in an unhappy relationship. a daily low dose of aspirin is recommended by doctors to prevent blood clots but a three year study found that patients who stopped the routine had a 60% rise in nonfatal heart attacks. the data looked at 40,000 patients. scientists say there should be more research on the risk of stopping aspirin therapy. what we're learning tonight about that horrible accident in yosemite where three people were swept over a huge water fall. temperatures warmed nicely across the entire bay area today. the temperature change you can expect for the upcoming weekend.

tonight there was still no sign of the three hikers who were swept over a huge water fall in yosemite national park and authorities believe none of them survived the tragedy. friends and family are not giving up hope. >> reporter: the water rushes over vernal fall and down the merced river. 1500 people a day make the climb to the top, the most popular hiking trail. at noon the trail was open and the search for the most part

halted. >> we're experiencing very high water for this time of year. the likelihood we will find the bodies probably won't happen until later in the year until the water actually starts to reseed. it's not safe for your rescue crews to go down there for the moment and begin difrg because of the force of the river. >> reporter: from the top to the bottom of vernal falls, it's over 300 feet. think of a 30-story building. at the bottom it's not just a pool of water but the rocks below. friends and family of the hikers swept over the falls are coming to yosemite not ready to give up. all three victims from the central valley, about 100 miles away. >> everyone just praying that he gets found. >> reporter: for hikers there's reason tore cautious but sometimes the beauty of nature overcomes what should be respect for nature's power. >> you see how quickly you could be taken away.
