with 60s and 70s. now update on traffic with sal. right now northbound 280 traffic looks good up to 880. no major problems there. also the morning commute is looking good if you're on 680 south heading down to the pleasanton area and into fremont. 6:00 let's go back to the desk. well, the space shuttle atlantis is back on earth after a predawn landing in florida this morning. >> landing gear down and locked . main gear touched down. >> looked picture perfect. that four member crew and the second youngest shuttle returned from space just before 3:00 our time. less than a minute after atlantis had stopped on the kennedy space center runway commander was putting the entire program into historic perspective. >> thank you columbia, challenger, discovery, endeavour, and our ship atlantis, thank you for protecting us and bringing this program to such a good end.

>> well, the shuttle crew is going to meet with their immediate families. we did see them coming out a little earlier and held a little bit of a press conference. we expect a briefing as well later. you can see that live at nasa ames in mountain view starting about an hour from now. right now fairfield police looking for a man who escaped from a s.w.a.t. standoff earlier this morning. it began around 8:00 last night when a woman called saying her son had attacked her, threatened to kill her and he had a gun. the woman was able to escape to safety and a s.w.a.t. team quickly surrounded the house near paradise valley road. they got a search warrant around midnight and tried to make contact with the man who was not responding. >> about 4:00 a.m. they finally made entry and were not able to locate him inside the house. at this point we're looking for him. [ indiscernible ] >> police have identified the man as 39-year-old michael austin. he is described as 5'9" with

brown hair and brown eyes. police say he has a history of mental health issues and could still be armed with a handgun. they say he is likely traveling on foot. time now 6:02. san francisco's new police chief is now facing his first major test. last night the chief appeared before hundreds of people in the bayview trying to quell the anger over last week's fatal police shooting. ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live now to tell us about the town meeting that quickly turned into chaos. tara. >> reporter: well, we're here live at the police headquarters and the chief is facing some tough challenges with members of the bayview community. tempers still flairing over saturday's shooting. [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: he showed up at the bayview opera house packed with more than 300 people to talk about the fatal shooting of the 19-year-old harding. but the crowd got unruly and

some accused police of planting evidence, trying to cover up the fact that harding wasn't armed. after an hour and a half some people jumped on stage so the chief command staff was concerned for his safety and forced him to leave. >> i want a solution. need more resources out here. need some people actually help get this together. >> reporter: outside the meeting emotions still ran high. >> that young man was a victim of neglect and abandonment. that boy was shot on the street and the police officers watched him die. >> reporter: now this meeting comes on the heels of protest tuesday where 43 people were arrested. those demonstrators upset over saturday's incident when two officers in the bay view tried to question harding about paying his fare on muni. harding a parolee and a person of interest in a seattle homicide began to run officers chased him down. san francisco police say lab results confirm he did have a gun. he had residue on his hand but

many members of the bayview district say they aren't buying it and don't trust police. this has become the biggest for policing skills well-known for when mayor ed lee appointed him chief three months ago. live in bayview, tara moriarty, channel 2 news. the f.b.i. searching for a man suspected of kidnapping his elderly mother. ktvu's jade hernandez is live this morning in daly city where the man has ties and may actually be hiding. jade. >> reporter: that's right. we've contacted the f.b.i. this morning. we understand the spokeswoman involved in this case may not be in the department for a few hours. but we can tell you authorities are very concerned for daly city residents. that's where we're live this morning. the f.b.i. says this california man has ties to daly city and the bay area where he may be trying to hide from the law. the f.b.i.'s accusing this man, 55-year-old marshal goldberg of kidnapping his 85-year-old mother from ashland, oregon, in may. authorities have a federal fugitive warrant out for goldberg. he's described as a white man

about 5'9" weighing between 160 and 165 pounds. he has brown hair and blue eyes and may also be wearing glasses. we understand goldberg's mother was living with her other son in oregon at the time of the abduction. the reason why authorities are concerned 85-year-old doris goldberg suffers from dementia and alzheimer's and cannot take care of herself. she is described as a white woman about 5'1" weighing about 135 pounds with white hair and blue eyes. there's no word on why doris' son would take his mother from her oregon home in ashland which he had been living. but the f.b.i. believes right now the younger goldberg may be driving a 1996 gold oldsmobile four door sedan with a california license plate 3szy023. anyone who spots these two should contact authorities as soon as possible at the f.b.i. san francisco division tip line. reporting live from daly city this morning, jade hernandez,

ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco will unveil today how it plans to deal with the transfer of state inmates to the local jail. the so-called realignment is part of the state's plan to save money by releasing thousands of nonviolent and low level offenders from state prisons to county jails. san francisco is set to get about 700 new inmates. the city will also receive money from the state to help pay the cost of housing those inmates. the realignment is set to begin in october. an audit of california prison system has found poor bookkeeping practices. released the audit after studying records from july 2009 to july 2010. found millions of dollars in overpayments for employee salaries and travel expenses. the audit also discovered one prison department employee had been overpaid by nearly $15,000 after being fired. softening his stance on debt ceiling talks. coming up the new concessions

president obama seems to be offering and on what condition. also we are going to hear about that back up plan that's still in play. that's when we check in with our washington d.c. bureau at 6:15. the f.a.a. may have to shut down some operations tomorrow if congress does not approve temporary funding bill. air traffic controllers would remain on the job but nonessential employees could be furloughed and the f.a.a. would not be able to collect ticket taxes that help support the air traffic system. bart riders have spoken when it comes to their seats. it's cleanliness over comfort. over the past two months more than 2,000 bart riders participated in seat laps and asked to rate how important cleanliness and comfort is on a scale of one to seven. cleanliness scored average of 6.29. comfort came in at 52:00. different seats will be part of the bart's new fleet of trains set to roll out in the year 2017. well, time now is 6:08.

things on the roads have been looking pretty good this morning. are they still that way? claudine, you're awfully optimistic. >> i try. you've got to be. >> you know what, you're absolutely right. it's been looking good. just trying to get claudine there but she didn't take the bait. it's actually looking very nice out there. you can see that for yourself. 237 the traffic looks great as you drive across 880. no major problems there. the morning commute is much better today than it was yesterday when we had a couple of serious issues that slowed things down. so far so good cross your fingers it's going to stay a nice looking drive as you drive throughout the east bay in the south bay and pretty much everywhere. one more thing let's take a look at francisco northbound 101 traffic moving well. the fog though as steve mentioned may affect flights into and out of sfo. we'll keep an eye on that for you. >> usually they tweet it. i keep an eye on that. flight advisor i think is the

tweet. we have an impact today with the fog. it wasn't there yesterday. it's there today. now, again, it's rather shallow but it's on the coast and it's moving up the coast. and it's also moving inland. looks like over parts of san pablo bay towards napa and a few inland locations. really it's just taking the path of least resistance. not going over the coastal hills but making i felt over the bay. little bit more of a pronounced sea breeze today. temperatures slightly cooler than 24 hours ago. all 50s here. we had 60s yesterday at this time under clear skies. there's a difference there. west-southwest 13 at fairfield. yesterday it was southwest at 5. it's not strong but we've doubled it. and also napa airport had about south-southwest 14. now they're southwest 5. but that's a cooler direction for them and that southwest 5 is also at vacaville. any time vacaville gets a southwest wind tells you the delta breeze is trying to get together. right there. little bit of a system coming in going to take the edge off the temps. inland it will still be warm to hot 90s but not mid-90s unless

the sonoma county sheriff's department is no longer going to volunteer information about a person's immigration status to the feds if that person was arrested solely on traffic violations. the new policy is part of a settlement with the american civil liberties union of northern california. the aclu sued the department three years ago accusing it of unlawful detentions and racial profiling.

bay area union leaders are calling for the federal government to stop business audits that check the immigration status of workers. labor leaders say between 100 and 200 people in berkeley are at risk of losing their jobs. this after immigrations and customs enforcement asked the plant for its employee payroll information in february. labor leaders employers safe for workers. it's expected to be another whirlwind day of debt limit negotiations. ktvu's allison burns is live this morning in washington d.c. with the new concessions president obama seems to be offering to try to reach a deal. allison. >> reporter: president oment baa ma has vowed repeatly not to even consider a short-term deal to raise the nation's debt limit. but now the word from the white house is he might accept an extension of just a few days if it buys time to do something bigger. but enthusiasm on capitol hill seems to be waning for one of the most ambitious plans from the senate's so-called gang of six.

liberals don't like the cuts to retirement programs and conservatives are rejecting any plan that includes tax increases. >> we know it's going to hurt the economy. we know it's going to hurt job creation. we know it's bad for small business. we're against tax increases. >> reporter: senate leaders are pressing ahead with their fall back plan that gives president obama authority to raise the debt ceiling in exchange for some big spending cuts. but right now with so many divisions here on capitol hill how this is all going to play out is still anybody's guess. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. federal reserve chairman ben bernanke is expected to face some tough questions when he testifies before the senate banking committee today. lawmakers are demanding answers about missed deadlines and delays in implementing the most sweeping overhaul of financial laws since the great depression. congress decided to shake up those regulations in response to the economic crisis which began nearly three years ago. nearly half of the rules were supposed to have been finalized by now. all right.

clouds and fog. yesterday it was not there. now moved over the bay. what's new? i mean water temperatures have come up. they were in the upper 40s and low 50s about a month ago. now they're in the upper 50s low 60s. doesn't matter. fog has decided to move in. you can see right there starting to fill in along the coast move in a little bit marin sonoma border over san pablo bay. we had a lot of 60s at this time yesterday and now upper 50s or low 50s. santa rosa airport 52. another system carving itself out digging into the pacific northwest that will equal cooler for us still warm to hot inland but i think noticeably cooler coast and bay. yesterday we started off sunshine for everybody and temperatures warmed up rapidly. they'll still be warm to hot for some today but cooler for others with a lot of 60s 70s as you head back to the west upper 80s low 90s inland and those will be coming down about two to four degrees. cooler pattern friday, saturday, warmer weather sunday, monday. american express says its customers set a record for

spending in the second quarter of this year helping profits leap 31% from the same time last year. the new york credit card company says it earned $1.3 billion and that topped analyst forecast. kim kardashian suing old navy. she says the clothing store violates her publicity rights by using a model in an ad campaign, that's her right there. she says she looks like her. the ad consumers may be confused thinking she's endorsing the clothes or think the clothes are part of her own clothing and shoe product line. kardashian is not suing the actress in the ad. pro football fans across the country will be closely watching a meeting in atlanta today. nfl owners and executives are holding a special meeting on the 4-month-old lockout. we're live from atlanta with more on what might happen by the end of the day. holly. >> reporter: good morning, mike. yeah, the 32 nfl team owners are actually meeting here in atlanta today hopefully to sign

this labor agreement with the players. now yesterday the players were expected to ratify that agreement but didn't happen. but there is speculation that that could happen today as well. with less than two months before the scheduled kickoff before the 2011-2012 nfl season. it's time to strike deal. football fans and players hoping team owners and players can reach an agreement putting an end to the work stoppage that began pack in march. >> it's billionaires against millionaires. can you not meet in the middle somewhere? >> reporter: even the president is ready for the lockout to end. >> my working assumption at a time when people are having to cut back, compromise and worry about making the mortgage and paying for their kids' college education is that the two parties should be able to work it out. >> reporter: at the center of the conflict what to do with some $9 billion in annual revenue. both sides want a bigger cut.

the players meeting in washington were expected to take a vote on a deal wednesday but stopped short of making any progress. in atlanta it appears team owners might approve the agreement. league counsel says this is good news for football fans. >> level of optimism at this point? >> it's cautious. it's cautious. but i think we're making progress. it's obviously a complicated agreement. but i think both sides are at the point where they can close, they should close and we should be in a position to take votes. >> reporter: both sides could vote as early as thursday on the proposed deal. and as you can see behind me the owners are trickling into the meeting room and everybody's waiting with baited breath. one of the things they're hoping is that this gets signed because, remember, the first preseason game is less than three weeks away, august 7th

good morning. right now traffic is doing pretty well if you are driving in san jose on 280 northbound getting up to highway 17. so far the south bay traffic

looks good. there's a bear. it's a black bear. i cannot believe it. it's in our yard. >> appears the heat on the east coast was just too much for one black bear to take in new jersey. so he broke into the woman's backyard and as you can see helped himself to some water from that pool. now the homeowner as you can see recorded the incident. but then she did pick up the phone and call police. by the time the officers arrived the bear had hopped over the fence and taken off. it is a big money coin caper. police in walnut creek have issued an arrest warrant for a suspected coin thief who they say literally went for the gold. investigators say billy made off with half a million dollars in rare gold coins from a dealer in the downtown area last february. investigators say he broke into the offices with an accomplice and went right for the coins that he knew would be worth top dollar. >> the front door was bashed in with a crowbar or something. this door was opened.

that cabinet was opened. >> he went straight in the building knew exactly where to go, grabbed the coins and was gone in a hurry. >> police believe the suspect was looking to cash in on the soaring price of gold. gold is now priced at more than $1600 an ounce. a group of investors is trying to pursue a second gold rush in northern california. they're trying to get an amadou county gold mine back up and running so they can dig for gold. the company is spending more than $20 million on the project. crews will spend the next year digging out more tunnels, drilling and blasting. and they expect their very first gold bar by the summer of 2012. atlantis is home from space never to fly again. the space shuttle landed this morning putting the entire program in the history books for good. and a town meeting turns into chaos as san francisco's police chief faces his first major test. also the opening bell about to ring on wall street. we'll have the early stock numbers for you.

residents of the bayview district say he was really hands on when he was the captain out there. and while last night things just didn't work out as planned. arrested. those demonstrators were upset over saturday's incident when two officers in the bayview tried to question harding about paying his fare on muni. when harding, a parolee and a person of interest in a seattle homicide, began to run, officers chased him down. san francisco police say harding fired shots at him and they have the lab results to prove harding had gun residue on his hand. some say they don't trust police but the chief remains steadfast in his commitment to the bayview community and says he'll go out and try once more. live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news. well, that fatal police shooting has prompted a number of demonstrations like the one you're looking at. and police say now more than half the people arrested in downtown san francisco tuesday night lived outside of the city. in all police arrested 43 demonstrators, 26 of those arrested were not city residents. just 17 lived in san francisco. only one person taken into custody actually lives in the bayview neighborhood where the fatal shooting occurred. a memorial service is

scheduled today for the ucsf doctor killed in a crash in san francisco's haze valley. psychiatrist kevin mack was on a university shuttle bus when it collided with a big rig last week at the intersection of oak and octavia. we are learning this morning ucsf will add seat belts to its shuttles in the coming weeks as a result of that accident. it will also hold one on one meetings with its drivers and create a how am i driving hot line. ed lee may be entering the race for san francisco's mayor after all. yesterday he hinted that some dig discussions may be taking place. >> that doesn't necessarily translate into elections, but there are interesting discussions that are going on. >> with you and whom else? >> i would just leave it at that. >> lee has repeatedly said that he does not want to pursue a full mayoral term, but for weeks various groups have been campaigning for lee to change his mind. just yesterday women for ed lee rallied on the steps of city

hall encouraging the mayor to run this coming november. media mogul back in the u.s. where his company news corp. faces more fallout from the phone hacking scandal in britain. here he is arriving at his new york home. warned it may cut news corp.'s credit rating. the f.b.i. is also looking to whether news of the world employees bribed police officers to obtain information about 9/11 victims. and two lawsuits filed by news corp. shareholders accuse him of mismanaging the company. the federal election commission will meet today to consider if john edwards' 2008 presidential campaign should repay $2.3 million. auditors say the campaign misstated just how much it should receive in federal matching funds. edwards has pleaded not guilty to charges he accepted illegal donations to hide an affair. a major chapter of u.s. space history ended at 2:57 this morning our time as the space shuttle atlantis rolled on to the runway at kennedy space center. jim spellman is live this

morning in florida and joins us with a look at what nasa accomplished during the last 30 years and what is still ahead. jim, i have to is you right off the top can you lay out the mood there as soon as atlantis touched down this morning? >> reporter: good morning, mike. yeah, you know the mood really here the only word to describe it is bittersweet. people today still reveling in the sweet part. perfect launch two weeks ago. perfectly executed mission visit to the international space station, dropped off supplies, did a final space walk and this this morning's perfect landing here all the astronauts safe and sound back on earth. tomorrow unfortunately will come the bitter. 2100 people will get laid off tomorrow. ultimately 8,000 will lose their jobs. what the future for man space flight is still up in the air. we could have private companies getting involved, nasa's new program to get farther into space perhaps an asteroid perhaps one day to mars is out there. for the next few years at least it's really unclear what it's going to be like, mike.

>> jim, for you personally if you put the pen and paper down just being there the first shuttle went up in 1981 and here you are reporting in the year 2011 what was it like for you on a personal level watching that atlantis come down? >> reporter: just about one of the coolest assignments i've ever had. when i was a kid in the 1970s living near washington d.c., enterprise, the first shuttle flew over on the back of a 747 on a sunday morning. we all left church to come out and watch it fly over and made a huge impression on me. it was so futuristic and optimistic just this amazing thing. being able to watch the launch two weeks ago and the landing here the final one has been incredible. and i think a lot of people have taken this for granted. and now realizing it's the last one and really digging into it and paying more attention people are realizing what a fantastic program this has been what amazing work the astronauts and all the people at nasa have done here and makes it all the more difficult to fathom we don't have a replacement ready to go to take the place of shuttle right

average to maybe slightly above. the coast has been running near average. it's the inland temps so far below for the longest time but yesterday they actually went above a little bit. no fog, no fog, lots of fog. high pressure keeping a cap on things. 50s on the temps low, mid to upper. at this time yesterday we had a lot of low 60s and no sea breeze to speak of whatsoever. so there is more of that today. southwest napa, west-southwest fairfield and southwest 5 at vacaville. not strong but it's there compared to yesterday. another system will be moving into the pacific northwest. it does not look that strong. any time that happens that opens the door for a cooler pattern. low clouds and fog, but, again, it's having a hard time getting its act together even though it's there are warm to hot inland. temperatures will be anywhere from the 60s 70s to 90s but by friday and saturday those inland temps will slide back into the 80s. cooler coast and bay today even with a westerly breeze with the sunshine there's a lot more fog compared to yesterday when there wasn't any. so 90s for temperatures. 95 up in clear lake.

atlantis is back on the ground at kennedy space center which will become its final home. right now the four member crew is preparing to talk publicly about what the final shuttle mission accomplish and had their emotions now that the historic space voyage is over. right now fairfield police are looking for a man suspected of attacking his mother. he escaped from his home after a standoff with a s.w.a.t. team. police say he has mental health issues and could be armed with a handgun. and san francisco's police chief was hoping to ease the growing tensions tied to last week's fatal officer involved shooting but last night's town hall meeting in the bayview quickly descended into chaos. angry community members shouted down the police chief the moment he took the podium. the search for a man suspected of kidnapping his elderly mother has turned to the bay area. ktvu's jade hernandez is live now in daly city which is one of the places where this man may be hiding. jade. >> reporter: claudine, we can tell you this morning that

authorities are worried for daly city residents. that's because the california man may have ties to this city and to the bay area where he may be hiding from the law. the f.b.i.'s accusing this man, 55-year-old marshal goldberg of kidnapping his 85-year-old mother from oregon in may. authorities have a federal fugitive warrant out for goldberg. he's described as a white man about 5'9" weighing between 160 and 165 pounds. he has brown hair and blue eyes and may also be wearing glasses. we understand goldberg's mother was living with her other son in oregon at the time of the abduction. the reason why authorities are concerned 85-year-old doris goldberg suffers from dementia and alzheimer's and cannot take care of herself. she's described as a white woman about 5'1" weighing about 135 pounds with white hair and blue eyes. there's no word on why doris' son would take his mother from her oregon home where she had been living. but the f.b.i. believes right now the younger goldberg may be driving a 1996

gold oldsmobile four door sedan with california license plate 3szy023. and if you spot these two, you're asked to contact the f.b.i. at 415-553-7400. reporting live from daly city, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. yosemite park rangers now say three hikers swept over a waterfall are presumed dead and may be a few months before their bodies can be recovered. they have been identified as 22- year-old of modesto, 27-year- old of tour lock and 22-year- old of manty coo. witnesses say she and one of the men crossed the metal barrier to take a picture. she slipped, they both fell in and when the second man tried to help he fell in the rushing water as well. >> i saw the man's eyes as he was going over the waterfall. that was devastating. >> all three were part of a group of christians from the

middle east who had been settling in the central valley. she was studying to be a doctor at the university of san francisco. park rangers say they might have to wait until fall when water levels drop to find the bodies. despite the grim outlook from park rangers, friends and family of the three hikers are praying they will be found alive. yesterday in san jose a vigil was held by members of the church prayers of healing and finding peace were repeated as people try to cope. all three missing hikers are members of the church community. 6:48. let's go to sal who is watching a really busy spot in the bay area. hi, sal. >> that's right. we're watching. hello claudine and mike. we're watching 580 interchange near 680. this is 580 in dublin. you can see traffic is going to be busy but still moving along on the ride eastbound 580 which

homeland security sending out a warning about potential utility threats. state and local law enforcement agencies are being told to look out for threats targeting private utility facilities. homeland security says it has no specific intelligence about a threat, but say there have been several recent incidents of people trying to gain utility information that could be used in an attack. this is the new disney-like cartoon being rolled out by al qaeda. an al qaeda affiliate says the goal of the cartoon is to apparently recruit children to join the terror network. scenes from the proposed short film show young boys in battle
