also, we don't see it right now but there have been helicopter dropping water or fire retardant on to the flames. we're going to keep following the story, as we get more information we will bring it to you. >> the medical examiner says it was not a san francisco police bullet that killed kenneth harding jr. rob roth is live now in the bay view where the stunning new development is still trickling out to the community, rob. >> reporter: the san francisco medical examiner in a surprising twist revealed what she found during the autopsy of kenneth harding. >> the bullet which was removed from his head is not consistent with the service ammunition used by the san francisco police department. the removed bullet has been released to the san francisco police department for further analysis. at this time, the cause and manner of death of mr. harding are pending. >> reporter: the medical

examiner says she recovered a .380/9-millimeter caliber round. police use .40 caliber bullets. police say he fired at them and they fired back. it appears police did strike harding on the ankle then hardings gun went off. >> we believe the fatal wound on mr. hardings body was self- inflicted. the investigation is still ongoing to find out whether or not this was an accident or intentional. >> reporter: police say they recovered a gun but are now saying it's the wrong one. police are offering a reward for the return of harding's gun. last night police chief suhr

was greeted with cheers after he released a statement. it's hardly unusual for a coroner to attend a public announcement. perhaps they wanted the public to know this comes from a private source. bart police today released video from a platform where a drunk man carrying a knife was shot and killed. david stevenson is live in oakland tonight with that video which is raising new questions about the deadly shooting, david. >> reporter: that's right, it is dramatic video that provides what appears to be some answers about that officer involved b.a.r.t. platform shooting while raising some other serious questions. b.a.r.t. today released this surveillance video of the july 3rd shooting on the san francisco platform. two police officers step off a train responding to a call of a possibly intoxicated man.

that man charles hill is not seen on camera. b.a.r.t. police chief raney says this officer can be seen putting on gloves to approach hill. minutes later he pulls his gun and shoots three times. police say this blue circle shows the path of that knife as it's hurled at the officer and bounces off a b.a.r.t. train. one of the officers was equipped with a taser. raney says he stood by the use of lethal force at the b.a.r.t. station. >> the officers are trained to take their surroundings, the backdrop of the events. they have to reserve to firing their weapons, they take those things into account. >> reporter: police documents from connecticut says that hill

find three different memorials. as friends and family left toys and flowers where daryl was gunned down. at the police station we found his mother seeking answers. >> i think my son was a target. i don't know. i will never know. >> reporter: knows the pain of street violence twice over. her other son was killed two years ago. >> last night i got the call that russell was shot dead. >> reporter: russell was watching kids play in the street when he was shot. there is another memorial for two women shot at bissel and fourth street. >> much of this violence is retaliatory shootings between young men, or street gangs that have been going after one another. >> reporter: today the police chief shared a renewed effort to tackle the cycle of gang violence that has taken lives

and changed the lives of the living forever. >> look at me as a mom. i just buried my son two years ago and here i go, got to do it again. it's just tough. it's hard. >> reporter: police said today there are no suspects in yesterday's slaying. in richmond, ken pritchett, ktvu news. developing news in union city right now. where just 30 minutes ago police arrested a burglary suspect after a tense day long man hunt. it's a story we brought you live at 5:00. we just got this new video into the ktvu newsroom of officers taking the man into custody on gene drive near roseway. this all started at about 10:15 this morning when a homeowner reported a man breaking into a house. officers rushed to the scene. >> we're immediately fired upon by an unknown suspect, the officers returned fire.

>> s.w.a.t. officers then set up a several block perimeter to try to contain the suspect. we'll have more on bay area news 37 at 6:00. within the last 20 minute, ktvu has learned that 80 people were arrested outside the hyatt hotel. the protest began before 5:00 this evening and we brought it to you live. the workers are calling for an end of what they call work force abuse. in fairfield a man is in custody tonight after police say he nearly chokedded his 75- year-old mother to death and also threatened her with a gun -- nearly choked his 75-year- old mother to death. the woman managed to get away and s.w.a.t. officers surrounded her home at about 8:00 p.m. last night. when they broke in about

midnight the son was gone. officers found and arrested 39- year-old michael austin at a local hospital around 7:30 this morning. california lawmakers today introduced a bill that would block san francisco's proposed ban on male circumcision. state senator leno and fiona miles were joined today by mike gado. they are supporting a bill that would prohibit cities from passing a ban on circumcision. >> state law already prohibits this type of legislation at the local level. the bill will clarify once and for all with regard to circumcision. >> reporter: a group of people gathered in san francisco to protest today's announcement. opponents call the practice a form of mutilation. we received word today that ron swegles has died. a spokesman said swegles died in michigan after a long illness. he served as mayor from 2005 to

2006. colleagues say he was known for his work on behalf of seniors. the navy veteran leaves leaves leaves behind his wife and five children. yosemite officials say they will not add new signs at the site where some hikers fell over a waterfall. the three slipped and plunged more than 300 feet down vernal fall. ucsf says it is now installing seat belts on all of its shuttle buses after a professor was killed last week. at this hour, a private memorial service is being held on campus for dr. kevin mack. hoe was ejected from the university shuttle bus during a collision with a big rig. some say it's time for that to change. >> a believer i think in smart

expectancy is 80.2 years years for women and 79 years for men. oakland ranked 15. the california native plant society and friends of nolan park filed a lawsuit today against the zoo and the city of oakland. the zoo claims the environment review process is flawed. the lawsuit calls for a full environment impact report before the expansion can move forward. the zoo's plan include a new veterinary hospital and 20 acres of new exhibit. court papers show arnold schwarzenegger at odds with her estranged wife maria shriver. shriver filed for divorce after the former governor admitted he fathered a child with a member of their staff. airline pilots have been training with flight simulators for decades. now air traffic controllers

back now to developing news in morgan hill. this is a live picture in news chopper 2. the fire is burning in the east side of the city and threatening homes on mcdonald lane and diana. the fire has burned about 60 acres of grassland. helicopter and planes were dropping water on the fire which right now is about 30% contained. 100 firefighters or so were at

the scene including those from calfire. and san jose fire department. the temperature in the area right now about 83 degrees according to our chief meteorologist bill martin. if we get any new information we will let you know. an update now on a story we first told you about last night. officers say they arrested villy vasilu he is suspected in stealing thousands of dollars in coins from a coin dealer downtown. the suit claims officers used excessive force when they opened fire on 37-year-old derrick jones last november. the officer said jones was reaching for a shiny object in his waistband which turned out to be a small scale. alameda county prosecutors ruled the shooting was justified. a federal grand jury in san francisco today indicted two

former richmond police officers on charges of conspiracy and making false statements in an investigation of a private security firm. the officers are also accused of trying to set up a sting operation to get two of the minors arrested for dui after they reported the officers to investigators. sources say defense secretary leon panetta will announce gay and lesbians can serve openly in the military. congress repealed the don't ask don't tell policy last year. the change would take effect in 60 days. we got a first look today at a remarkable training facility for bay area air traffic controllers. ktvu's tom vacar tried it himself. >> reporter: a few air traffic controllers have given the

profession a black eye of late, the organization remains one of the world's best and here is how they're making it better. >> runway 28 left cleared to land. >> reporter: why would uncle sam ever let a reporter command airliners to take off and land, because here i can do no harm. >> nationwide we're looking to hire 11,000 new traffic controllers in the next decade. the challenge is to train them as thoroughly and as quickly as possible. that's where a system like this has so many benefits. >> reporter: here at the faa in oakland, the bay area's 170 air traffic controllers now get basic training for simulations at any airport. test directors can really sock it to them. >> all type of weather situations, day-night activity. we can change traffic volumes. >> perhaps more importantly, people can be trained on any

scenario. so should it arise, no one will lose their jobs. >> aircrafts with engine out, all type of, just about any situation you can think of. >> reporter: beyond that, before sfo opened its new domestic terminal controllers were already trained to direct people to and from it. whether it's a scenario like a closed runway or even a plane in the bay, the faa says it's paying off in better controllers. >> we're finding nationwide the power simulator program is accelerating by training 15 to 30% based on the location. >> reporter: the trainers are all veteran controllers themless. tom vacar, ktvu news. safeway says it's quarterly earnings exceeded their expectations. the company earned nearly $140

time you have fires. and the weather has really been helpful with firefighters. with the moist cool air coming off the ocean, the fog and below average temperatures in many city. firefighters have had a much easier, early july. i'm trying to think of a time we had so few grass fires in july and june as well. here's your forecast tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. there's more of it. so a little more fog means cooler tomorrow. that's really how this goes. fog by tomorrow, lunchtime. you're seeing mostly sunny conditions. we go through the microclimates. mid-60s out toward treasure island. low 70s in berkeley. mid-70s out toward lafayette. the temperatures start to go up now. you're away from the fog. temperatures in the inland bay valleys low 90s tomorrow, upper 80s. still quite pleasant, and still good news for firefighters. this time of year it's not hard to go 95, 98 degrees out in

this area. nice day tomorrow, cooling continues though as the low pressure to the north of us continues to set us up with more fog. it's a fog producer is what it is. the winter it's rain, this time it's the fog producer. it sends temperatures down. wednesday we're in the 90s. today was a little cooler. into the weekend it's not going to be cool, just for fog in the area. mid- and upper 80s most part. good air quality. fog is a constant player right there along the coast at half- moon bay and el granada and up toward bodega bay. looks like a really nice weekends. just not as warm. not hot. if you want the heat, head inlands you will find some mid- and upper 80s. nfl team owners strike a deal. the one place they still need to get the players back on the field.
