an 11-year-old girl was shot in san francisco, and this morning san francisco police are looking for new evidence of the crime scene, part of their investigation. and new details about the three people arrested in connection with the beating of bryan stow and the edge curbing information about his recovery. and a roller coaster at a southern california theme park comes to a screeching halt right in the middle of the run. what it took to get the riders off safely.

good morning, everyone. welcome to ktvu mornings on 2. it's saturday, july 23rd. let's check in with rosemary for a look at your weekend forecast. good morning, rosemary. >> good morning to you! to sum it up, it's going to be pleasant today. a little cool on the coastline, with afternoon sea breeze some if you're headed in that direction, bring along the sweatshirt, light jacket always handy on the coast. outside of that, slightly cooler for the inland areas. from two to four degrees. we are waking up with the low clouds this morning, that afternoon sea breeze picking up for the second half of the day. afternoon highs, upper 50s on the coast to mid to upper 80s inland. we'll show you what you can expect for your neighborhood coming up. new this morning, an 11- year-old is fighting for her life after being shot in the chest. it happened just after 11 last night in san francisco's western neighborhood. and that is where ktvu's ali rasmus joins us live with what police think happened and the men now being questioned. ali. >> reporter: i want to show what you is going on right now. just in the last 15 minutes,

this san francisco police officer that you see in jefferson square park showed up and i talked to him briefly. he explained that now that it's daylight, he is out in this area, the area where the crime happened, looking for any new evidence that may have surfaced since last night's shooting. where we're standing now is the corner of eddie and laguna streets, and on this street here there's a row of apartment buildings. this is where the 11-year-old girl was living when she was struck by a bullet. now, at this point we don't know if her home had opinion targeted or if that was a stray bullet. but you can see some of the crime scene tape that's left over from last night along with some of the chalk circled spots where evidence markers were laid out last night as police started their investigation. san francisco police responded to calls of shots fired on this street. laguna street around 11:00 last night. and police say one of the rounds went through an apartment building nearby, and

it struck that 11-year-old girl inside. it struck the girl in the chest. she was rushed to san francisco general hospital with life- threatening injuries. so far, police have not made any arrests, but police say they did detain a group of young men who were on the street at the time of the shooting. police say they are considered suspects in this shooting. san francisco police say their criminal investigation union and gang task force are investigating the shooting. but we're hoping to get a little more information and we'll bring you an update about a half hour from now. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. also new this morning, from san francisco, god samaritans helped catch a stabbing suspect. police say an argument escalated in a fight last night outside the dirty tricks salon. the suspect stabbed two people, one in the arm. the god samaritans chased and tackled the suspect to the ground. in piedmont police are searching for two men who robbed customers at a cafe shooting one of them in the leg. this is new video from the

scene at gaylord's cafe. a woman says the two men walked in for ice cream and left. they returned around 10:45 last night, when they pulled out guns and went after a customer using his laptop. >> we get people in here are laptops every day. and they i apparently were scoping it. tried to run in, grab it. >> witnesses say as the two men were leaving some other customers tried to stop them. that's when one of the suspects fired his gun, hitting a woman in the leg. police say she was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. the two suspects have not been located. new details are now being released about the three new suspects arrested in connection with the beating of giants fan bryan stow. and police are now clearing the man once called their prime suspect. on thursday, los angeles police arrested 29-year-old louis sanchez, 30-year-old marvin norwood and 21-year-old doreen sanchez. louie and norwood have both been charged with multiple felonies, including assault and

battery. police say the attack included cutting stowe's tongue and disfigure his face. yesterday the police chief cleared giovanni ramirez, saying he was not involved in the attack. >> information comes as it comes. these cases work as they work. unfortunately, in this case, it took a long amount of time to establish information that exonerated mr. ramirez. >> they were arrested as an accessory to a attack but cleared and released. louis sanchez was charged with attacking two other giants fan that night and they're held on $500,000 bail. family and friends of bryan stow are reacting to news of the arrest. we did speak with bryan's cause on joe stow yesterday at the hospital where bryan has been for the last four months. he says the family is still processing the news of the arrest and says they went through this before, when the ramirez was arrested. and they are keeping their

focus on bryan. >> the most important thing is bryan's well being. you know? obviously, this is going to take care of itself, what is happening in l.a. but our priority is for bryan. >> and there is some encouraging news about bryan's recovery. john says he mouthed the word stowe when asked his last time in. he also opened both eyes and gave what appeared to be a thumbs up. stay with us here on ktvu mornings on 2. coming up at 7:30 we'll go to christian kasdin live in los angeles for more on the arrests. a memorial service for a deputy killed will be held next week. tuesday jim matheson was shot and killed in petaluma while off-duty. officials say he was trying to help a family friend resolve a domestic dispute between the friend's daughter and her ex- boyfriend. the public is invited to the memorial friday, july twining at 11 a.m. at marin veterans memorial auditorium in san rafael. norwegian authorities are looking into the possibility of

a second suspect in the twin terror attacks. so far one man is blamed for a bombing and a shooting. authorities call the country's worst catastrophe since world war ii. the shooting happened at an island youth retreat and at least 84 people have died. survivors say the 32-year-old suspect and -- dressed as a police officer and opened fire at random. they say he carried automatic weapons and handguns. he dove into the water and climbed up trees, trying to escape. police say he went to the island after also placing a bomb in the capital city of oslo. he had bought six tons of fertilizer. seven people tied in the prime minister's office. the prime minister wasn't there at the time of that attack. authorities have preliminary charged the man with terrorism. overnight they searched his apartment and have not disclosed a moat of but say he recently posted right wing anti-

muslim negligence on the internet. they believe he acted alone or with someone else but not as part of a terrorist network. good morning to you. a good-looking day in store this morning, waking up with gray skies. you can see it here over the bay. you have a breeze blowing in from the west and southwest and that sea brose will be picking up for the afternoon. cool on the coast, comfortable inland. giving you a look at temperatures right now, within one to two degrees of what we felt yesterday, 54 san rafael, 56 in san francisco. win for degrees in concord. upper 50s in livermore and we are waking up with plenty of gray. you can see it all around the bay. partly cloudy skies inland, mostly gray over the north bay, santa rosa and napa reporting gray skies. san francisco down into san mateo, so peninsula as well as the east bay. but the farther inland east, it's more sunny and your neighborhood. giving you a look at the forecast for about 10:00, just inside the bay we still have some of that low cloud cover and along the coastline.

of the day. moving now to the bay bridge toll plaza. things also looking smooth will. the oakland a's are in new york. if you're headed to the giants game today, it's a night game starting just after 6:00. chp not reporting any major incidents on the roadways at this houring but overnight in oakland a two-vehicle crash shut down a section of 880 after 2:00 in morning near the 23rd street exit. the chp and the alameda county sheriff's office had to shut down all southbound lanes for about an hour. officers questioned everyone involved in the accident. no arrests were made, and no injuries have been reported. a popular ride at a disney theme park is expected to open this morning, one day after that ride came to a halt. two dozen passengers found themselves stuck on the california screaming roller coaster last night at disney's california adventure in anaheim. that ride came to a stop after a backpack fell on to the track. firefighters responded and brought the 24 passengers

safely down by ladder. nobody was injured. new information about the divorce between former governor arnold schwarzenegger and maria shriver. tmz reported earlier this week schwarzenegger filed court documents to deny shriver alimony. the documents also ask the judge to order shriver to pay for her own legal fees. tmz is now reporting schwarzenegger signed those court documents without reading them. the source close to the former governor says his lawyer wrote up the documents. this comes as the couple's son remains hospitalized as we first told you yesterday here on mornings on 2. 13-year-old christopher schwarzenegger is recovering after a boogie boarding accident. he has a broken bone and a collapsed lung. the 13-year-old is expected to make a full recovery. time 17:12. the debt showdown continues as president obama gets ready to meet with congressional leaders. the jump in gas prices already boeing predicted if lawmakers fail to act by the august 2 deadline. and the people in charge of

demand at each other. >> boehner walked away from the talks after a using the president of asking more more money at the last minute, which would mean raising taxes. the deadline for the budget is august 2. also new, the federal aviation administration is partially shut down this weekend. four thousand agency employees are now on furloughs after congress failed to resolve disputes. republicans want to cut subsidies, democrats are refusing to make the cuts. the two parties are also fighting over legislation that would make it more difficult for airline workers to unionize. "don't ask, don't tell," it has been officially repealed by president obama and gay members of the military are celebrating. 13 years ago she won her case against the law of banning gay people of serving in the military. she was with president obama in november when he repealed "don't ask, don't tell" and now that it's been certified gay service members can stay true to themselves while serving the

country, she says. >> i think that other people today who are serving will feel a sense of relief. they'll know that when i come into work today, today won't be the day i got a notice saying your job is over. >> the policy will officially be lifted in 60 days, advocates saying the next step is getting the same military benefits for same-sex couples as heterosexual couples. same-sex marriages start tomorrow in new york and the state says it's likely to make some money. they estimate 43,000 same sucks couples living together in the state. half of them are expected to marry with other couples from nearby states. lawmakers say this will bring in about $391 million during the next three years. they say same-sex couples are not only spending money on the wedding, but on financial planning, legal services and real estate. and the city of castro valley will be showing their gay pride today. the rainbow rally across the valley is being held at the

senior parking lot at the high school. it will begin at 12:30 this afternoon. at first the idea started by three teenagers was going to be a march through the city. but when almost 300 people said they would attend, it was changed to a rally at the larger location. in our economy watch in morning, you may have noticed gas prices creeping back up. triple-a says the price of a gallon of regular in san francisco has jumped two cents in one week to 3.90. but prices could go even higher. economists say there are several scenarios that could push gas above $5 this year. they say prices will skyrocket if lawmakers fail to raise the debt ceiling, forcing the country into default. economists are again warning against unrest in the middle east. and verizon is reporting it activated 2.3 million iphones during its second quarter this year. but that is still behind at&t, which activated 3.6 million new iphones. analysts say at&t's decision to sell a lower cost version of

new york city will finally get some slight relief from the heat today. today's temperatures expected to be 99 degrees. the city reached 104 yesterday, which is the hottest temperature since 1977. and the second hottest temperature on report. pools and ice cream stands and even fire hydrants are just some of the things keeping people cool during this heat wave. it continues to grip the midwest, blamed on global warming, and saying we're witnessing a climate change. states went through a bitter winter just a few months ago. >> the heat is more extreme. the cold is more extreme. when it's in the winter. and in the duration is much longer. >> scientists say globally, rainfall is becoming more

new information continues to come in about the three people arrested in connection with the beating of giant fan bryan stow. the latest on what police are saying about their arrest and the man now cleared. good morning. welcome back to ktvu mornings on 2. ktvu's christian kazdin flew to los angeles yesterday and joins us live with the latest from the l.a. county jail where two of the three suspects arrested on thursday are still in custody. authorities held a news conference yesterday, the mayor standing side by side with police chief beck to announce the arrests of 29-year-old louis sanchez. 30-year-old marvin norwood and 31-year-old doreen sanchez. published reports say arrest records show louis sanchez is 5 feet 11 inches, 175 pounds, with neck tattoos. arrest records also indicate that marvin norwood is 6 feet

4, about 250 pounds. knows descriptions closely match the men witnesses say severely bet brine stow on opening day here in los angeles. witnesses also reported that a woman pulled up in a car and drove the two assailants away. no word if investigators think that woman is doreen sanchez. she is now out on custody, having posted $50,000 bail. still in custody is giovanna ramirez, the parolee investigators arrested in may and said was their prime suspect. he is now no longer considered a suspect. >> the initial evidence and identification which led to his arrest have been refuted by an instigatioat has involved dozens of detectives. >> you're locking across the street from the jail here in los angeles. the arraignment across from the jail, the three suspects with set to appear in court monday to be formally charged before a

judge. christian kasdin, ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, an 11- year-old girl was shot in the chest in san francisco's western edition. police say it happened late last night when the girl was inside an apartment. ali rasmus is live in the city with the latest on this story. ali. >> reporter: mike, this is the intersection near the home where this shooting happened les night. we're standing on eddie and laguna streets in san francisco. if you look down, you can see the chalk circles where police outlined some of the evidence markers they placed after they started investigating the shooting last night. this also leftover crime scene tape here. an 11-year-old girl in one of these apartment buildings was struck in the chest by a bullet when a bullet went through her apartment home. that 11-year-old girl was rushed to san francisco general hospital, with life-threatening injuries. we're trying to get an update on her condition this morning but haven't heard back from officials at the hospital. and thorn, san francisco police were in the neighborhood, actually across the street from this row of apartments in jefferson square park.

they were looking for new evidence this morning. the shooting happened around 11:00 last night and the officer explain they came out to make sure they got all the evidence related to the shooting. police have not made any arrests, but they did detain a group of young men who are considered suspects and they have also identified some witnesses who may be able to help them identify the shooter. one of the neighbors on the street told us before the shooting happened that she was looking out her window and saw a group of five to eight teenage boys standing around in jefferson square park. she says she heard five gunshots and then saw the group of teens run away. police say it was one of those bullets that struck the 11-year- old girl in her home. the bullet struck her in the chest. she went to the hospital life- threatening injuries. we don't yet have an update on her condition. but police are still looking for more information on the shooting and they're asking neighbors or anyone who may have been in the area to come forward and give san francisco police a call. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. also new this morning, a

man remains in critical condition after a shooting in oakland. officers responded to a call on the 2200 block of chestnut street at 11 last night. they found a man suffering from gunshot wound. police have a male suspect in custody. they also say there's another person hurt but they're not sure what caused the injury. authorities don't know if the shooting is gang-related. oakland police are investigating a shooting earlier in the night. it happened in west oakland near market and 46th streets at 8:30. officers say it appears to have been an attempted robbery. no word on the condition of the victim. a new gang unit hit the streets in a story you will see only on 2, a ktvu news crew rode along with officers last night and at one stop officers seized from a suspected gang member marijuana paraphrenalia, a switchblade and a stockpile of spray paint used for tag. >> they all said, hey, we have never seen you like this. well,le see more of us like this, and spread it around. >> how old are you?

>> the gang unit pulls in officers from detectives from regular duties and while it stretches the department, officers say the benefits outweigh any costs. the recent death of 19-year- old kenneth harding sparked a vigil in san francisco's payview neighborhood. authorities now say he fatally shot himself during a gun battle with police. last night people gathered to remember harding and other victims of violence. organizers say they held the vigil to help people to mourn the de and foyt for the living. the chief is providing more explanation on how harding may have shot and killed himself. he says the gunfight between harding and police started after harding ran from officers when they tried to stop him to see if he had a muni ticket. while it's unclear who shot first, police now say the bullet that killed harding came from his own gun. according to the county medical examiner, the bullet retrieved from harding's head does not match the bullets used in police-issued weapons. >> apparently, the officer shot hit the suspect in the leg, so imagine if you would an instant

ham spring pain pull would cause the person to lurch and the gun enter the right side of the neck and behind the cheek. >> police say the gun seen in this amateur video is most likely harding's. after the shooting someone picked up that gun and ran away. the chief says they know who that person is and are currently looking for him. caylee's law has been introduced in california. state senator tom berryhill proposed the law yesterday in fresno making it a felony for a parent or caregiver to fail to report a missing child within 48 hours and make it a felony to not report a child's death within two hours. >> i fully expect to get this bill through. we're going to work very hard on it. we've got the support of law enforcement with us, and there's a lot of good folks in the legislature that want to keep our community safe. >> the law is named for two- year-old caylee anthony. caylee was reported missing by

her grandmother on july 15th of 2008. she had already been missing for 31 days. in december of 2008, caylee's remains were found fear her home. her mother casey was recently acquitted of her murder. a bill introduced by san francisco state senator leeland yee tackles the issue of crowded bay area freeways. it would require employers to subsidize the cost of workers' commutes if they choose public transit, carpools or bicycles. workers could cover their commute costs with pre-tax dollars or even get up to a $75 a month subsidy. business owners are worried about the extra expense. >> so many businesses are in trouble. to add one more thing on top of our day to day expenses, we do our best to meet those expectations. >> supporters of the bill say business owners have nothing to worry about. they say the bill would reduce

payroll taxes, saving employers money. the governor has 12 days to sign or veto the legislation. firefighters worked through the newt to make sewer a fire did not flare up in the rossmoor area of walnut creek. the blaze broke out in an apartment building lasts night. when crews arrived flames had spread to all eight units. firefighters contain that blaze in about an hour. rossmoor is a retirement community so most are senior citizens. >> a lady yelling, help, help! >> it was so smoky you could betterly see and there was flames from the stove and flames on the ceiling. >> the fire didn't injure anyone but destroyed all eight apartments. the red cross put the 13 residents on to a bus and got them to a temporary shelter. the cause of that fire still under investigation. and firefighters in southern california are continuing to battle a large brushfire. the fire is burning in the indian reservation about 90 minutes northeast of san diego. so far 2800 acres have burned, and the fire is only 15%

contained. the flames are in a remote area, and one cabin has been destroyed. good morning to you! this morning a near repeat of what we saw yesterday, giving you a live look at oakland. we've got gray skies overhead, spread into the valleys, in most cases. and we're looking at onsunshine once again. look at storm-tracker 2 from the north to the south, and east e we're, look at low clouds, even a little bit of patchy drizzle along the coastline this morning. winds are calm for the most part. we're looking at just a light brose around oakland, and through fairfield a little broseier there. and some of that delta brose impacting some of our inland areas this morning. 56 in san francisco right now. mid-50s in oakland. as well as san jose. upper 50s in livermore. partly to mostly cloudy skies. livermore, danville concord looking mostly clear. antioch mostly clear and the north bay, covered in gray. 55 santa rosa, 57 in napa. through the morning hours,

we'll see this peel back just a bit. but for the coastline, could actually be gray most of the day. look at what is going on here  at 7:00, picking it up by 9 or 10:00, pulling back just inside the bay. the east bay could see still partly to mostly cloudy skies. richmond, berkeley into oakland, and then by noontime, it looks like it's all the way back in. we're got along the bay bridge -- parts of the bay bridge, but it's the golden gate then on the peninsula here, and even throughout the afternoon, when we see most of it clear, still on the outer richmond and for areas that perhaps around sausalito, partly cloudy to mostly cloudy for the afternoon. so we're looking at the patchy fog, the cool conditions for the coastline to continue on the by area. the morning clouds, afternoon sea breeze expected back with us. and our inland spots will be clearing with mostly sunny skies, warm conditions although slightly cooler than yesterday in some cases. 78 expected in sonoma. 75 for novato. upper 70s in santa rosa. so just a great looking day for our valley locations. 83 expected in concord.

candidates, including michele bachmann and newt gingrich. julie land yee is the first official candidate in the mayor's race. a procession down the street served as an escort for yee. he and his supporters arrived at city hall with thousands of signatures to register him as a candidate. those signatures will save yee a $5,000 fee. >> the fact that we're the first individual to collect the 10,000 signatures, valid signatures, mind you, it just -- indicates the strength of our campaign. >> city attorney dennis herrera and the supervisor are also expected to run. and there is growing speculation mayor ed lemay also join in the race. right now california's redistricting commission is taking public comment on their plans for a contra costa county. commission is considering moving martinez and pleasant hill into the yolo county voting district.

we spoke to city leaders in both pleasant hill and martinez who don't think the plan is a good move for the bay area cities. >> i can't imagine a senator from that district whose basis is yolo and lake counties, i can't imagine that person really having a very deep understanding of what central contra costa county and its communities were all about. >> the commission says it's trying to create new districts that best represent geography and population. the new maps will be finalized on august 15th. a veteran mail carrier is hailed as a hero in the south bay. 49-year-old danny was delivering mail to this townhome in santa clara wednesday when he saw two girls and their nanny running out to escape a fire. firefighters were on their way but in instead of waiting, the man took matters into his own hand. >> there was a hose over there, and any neighbor and it looked long enough. it was -- like hooked it on,

cuts and browses but otherwise was okay. and still not clear whether he was able to gun the wall the of his. >> man. two workers are also recovering after a construction crane accident in florida. the men were repairing a security camera when their crane caught on fire. they were trapped 30 feet in the air for half an hour. their equipment likely hit a power line, burning the hydraulic lift. firefighters used a bucket truck from the utility company to rescue them. they appear to have suffered from electric shock but will be okay. it is late july and a lot of people may be going up to lake tahoe. if you do, on your way was may want to stop at boreal because it's the last day to snow ski and they're open at boreal. and ski under 82 degrees! it's going to be sunny and warm, it's going to be fabulous day! here, we're off to a gray start. our temperatures very similar to yesterday, within a degree or two. for the afternoon, lock at was we are expecting.

saturday, july 23rd. let's start with a check of the weekend weather with meteorologist rosemary. >> god morning to you! another comfortable day for the inland areas. cool by the coast, slightly cooler than yesterday, and this morning very similar to how we started our friday. giving you a look at what we can expect for today. low clouds back along the coasted and for some of our inland areas. even a little patchy drizzle reported along the coast this morning. afternoon highs, going to cool just a bit. from it two to four degrees but mostly sunny in most cases, and the extended forecast little change at least the next few days. we do have a summer-like heat expected further done line. we'll talk about that and what you can expect outside your door this afternoon, coming up. right now an 11-year-old girl is fighting for her life after being shot in the chest. police say she was hit by a stray bullet during a gunfight in san francisco. ali rasmus just talked to the girl's family and is live with more on the man being questioned by police.

ali. >> reporter: the girl was spending the night with her aunt and uncle and in apartment willed building here. and you can see where a bullet pierced the front window. it happened around 11:00 last night and this girl was struck in the chest. she was spending the night with her uncle, can you describe what happened? >> well, at 11:00, and she came to the living room where i was, and she could have a snack before going to sleep. and i said joe, just a minute. she went to the bedroom, and shots rang out. she came running out again, saying i've been shot! so i told her to calm down and told her to sit down in the hallway, which has no windows, and i dialed 911, and told the little girl was shot. and they were here very quickly, about two or three minutes, and she was taken to the hospital. >> how is she doing this morning? >> the doctor says she's in

critical but stable condition. the bullet went through her chest and came out the back. so there was some bleeding in her lung, and she went to surgery, and they said that put a tube to help her release fluid. >> how many gunshots did you hear before this happened? >> there were multiple. gunshots. i thought i heard four or five. and one came in the living room window, one through the bedroom. and so loud and sudden, i was sort of -- went deaf. like you hear something real loud like shattering of glass, and that's when the child came running to the living room saying she was shot. that's all i know. >> eric, the young girl's uncle, thank you for talking to us. i'm very sorry about what happened to you, your niece this morning, and hope she is doing okay this morning.

but it does sound like she is in stable condition. >> right. >> which is good. thank you. >> thank you very much. >> police have not made any arrests, but they have detained a group of young men who neighbors say were across the street. we'll show you jefferson square park across the street. a neighbor tells us she saw a group of five to eight teenagers standing in the park minutes before the shooting happened. and then that neighbor says she heard five gunshots ring out and saw the group of teenagers run away. but this morning san francisco police are still looking for new information. they're urging anyone who may have seen what happened to give this. a call on their anonymous tip line. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. piedmont police are searching for two men who robbed customers at a piedmont cafe. shooting one of them in the leg. this is new video from the scene at baylor's cafe. a woman who works there says the two men had come in to the cafe earlier last night for some ice cream and when they returned around 10:45, they had guns and went after a customer using his laptop. >> we get people in her with

their laptops every day. and they apparently were sitting out here, scoping it. and tried to run in, grab it. >> witnesses say as the two men were leaving, some customers tried to stop them. that's when one of the suspects fired his gun, hitting a woman in the leg. police say she was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. the two suspects have not been located. an overnight crash in oakland shut down a section of under 78880. two vehicles collided just after 2:00 this morning near the 23rd street exit. the chp and the alameda county sheriff's had to close all southbound lanes for about on an hour. no arrests were made and no injuries were reported. charges have been filed against two of the men arrested in the beating of attack of joins fan to bryan stow and police are also now clearing man once called their prime suspect. on thursday, los angeles police arrested 29-year-old louis sanchez, 30-year-old marvin norwood, and 21-year-old doreen

sanchez. louis and norwood have both been charged with multiple felonies, including assault and battery. police say the attack include cutting stowe's tongue and disfiguring has face. yesterday the police chef cleared giovanni ramirez, saying he was not involved in the attack. >> information comes as it comes. these cases work as they work. unfortunately, in this case, it took a long amount of time to establish information that exonerated mr. ramirez. >> doreen sanchez had been arrested as an accessory to the attack but has been cleared and released. louis sanchez was also charged with attraction, to other giant fans that night. they are being held on $500,000 bail. family and friends of bryan stow are reacting to news of the arrest. we spoke with bryan's cousin john jed at san francisco general hospital, where bryan has been since may. he says the family is still

processing news of the arrest and says they went through this before when ramirez was arrested and are keeping their focus on bryan. >> the most important thing is bryan's well being. obviously are this will take care of itself, which what is happening in l.a. but our priority is for bryan. >> and there is some encouraging news about bryan's recovery. john says he mouthed the words stowe when asked his last name. he also opened both eyes and gave what appeared to be a thumbs up. and coming up at 8:30, we'll go to ktvu's christian kasdin live in los angeles for more on the arrests. we continue to learn more details about a twin terror attack in norway. authorities are looking into the possibility of a second suspect in the bombing and shootings. the shooting happened an an island youth retreat. so far, 85 bodies, most children, have been recovered. survivors say the 32-year-old suspect, anders breivik, posed

as a police officer and opened fire at ran dome. people climbed up tries trying to escape a few hours before the shooting rampage, police say breivik bopped the capital city of oslo. he bought six tons of fertilizer. seven people died in the ebbs explosion near the prime minister's office. the blast blew out windows and tore through several other government buildings. the prime minister was not there at the time of the attack. authorities have charged breivik with terrorism. overnight they did search his apartment and have not kiss closed a motive but say he recently posted anti-muslim messages on the internet. police don't believe he belongs to a terrorist network. right now budget talks are underway at the white house, and speaker john boehner is participating after walking out yesterday. in his weekly dreads, president obama stressed the importance of both sides coming together. >> there will be plenty of hagging over the details in the days ahead.

good morning to you! a live look from bay point, we're dealing with mostly sunny skies, temperatures near 60 degrees. tomorrow same-sex couples in new york will officially be able to marry. the city's clerk's office is expanding hours so all 832 couples who registered can marry. mayor bloomberg is also participating. he will officiate the meeting in his policy advisor and commissioner but not everyone is onboard. a number of city clerks resigned, saying they will not perform gay marriages. jaw and when those same-sex marriages started, new york state will start to benefit financially. state officials say they estimate there are 43,000 same- sex couples living together in new york. half of them are expected to marry along with other couples

from nearby states. lawmakers say this will bring in about $391 million. they say same-sex couples are not only spending money on the weddings but on financial planning, legal services, and real estate. for the first time the city of castro valley will be showing their gay pride today. the rainbow rally in the valley is being held at the senior parking lot of castro valley high school. it will begin at 12:30 at first the idea started by three teenagers was going to be a march through the city. but what almost 300 people said they would attend, it was change to a rally at the larger location. people will march through san jose today for the right of the disabled. the second annual disability pride parade begins at 10:30 at catholic charities. more then a thousand people are expected to attend. organizers say they want to draw parallels with other groups such as by and many motorsports. "don't ask, don't tell," it has officially been repealed by president obama and day members of the military are celebrating.

warning of a oppressive heat in several states in new york city it's expected to reach 99 degrees today. and that's a cooldown compared to the 104 temperatures they experienced yesterday. that is the hottest it's been there since 1977. pools, ice cream stands and even fire hydrants like that one are just some of the ways people are trying to keep cool during this heat wave. bay area scientists are blaming the heat wave on global warming. they say we're witnessing a climate change. states now experiencing record heat also went through a bitter winter just a few man ago. >> the heat is more extreme. the cold is more extreme when it's in the winter. and the duration is much longer. >> scientists say rainfall worldwide is becoming more intense, worsening floods preventing soil from soaking up water, triggering more intense  heat and longer droughts. the original suspect has

time 8:30. we continue to follow news from overnight. an lever-year-old girl has life- threatening injuries after shooting in san francisco. ali rasmus is live in the neighborhood and you talked with the uncle in our last half hour about this little girl. how is she doing? >> reporter: she is doing

better this morning. she is in critical but stable condition after surgery overnight. but this apartment home is near eddie and lewin streets in san francisco. and this 11-year-old girl was spending the night at her uncle's house here when neighbors heard gun fire ring out. one of the bullets you can see here pierced the apartment window, went through the window and blinds. the young girl was laying in bed inside just behind this window listen to ipod when she was struck. we spoke to her uncle. he explained what happened after that. >> she came to the living room where i was so she could have a snack before going to sleep. i said yes, just a minute. she went to the bedroom, and shots rang out. she came running out again and said, i've been shot! so i told her to calm down and told her to sit down in the hallway which no windows. and i dialed 911. >> again, the young girl went to san francisco general with life-threatening injuries. she was shot in the chest but this morning her uncle says his

niece is in critical but stable condition after surgery. police have not made may rests in this shooting but they aesop's they did detain a group of young men who were in the area when this shooting happened. this happened around 11:00 last night. we talked to a neighbor who didn't want to appear on camera, but she said she feared for her safety. but she explained what she saw minutes before the shooting. we want to show you this neighbor said she saw a group of five to eight teenage boys in jefferson square park, across the street from the apartment where the bullet went through. the neighbor says she heard about five gunshots ring out and then saw the group of teens running away. again, san francisco police have detained a group of juveniles in connection with the shooting. we don't know if it's the same group that the neighbor saw before the shooting. but police are asking for more information and urging anyone who may have seen or heard what happened to call them and call their anonymous tip line. we'll have that number up on the website a little later this

morning. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. also overnight, a man remains in critical condition after a shooting in oakland. officers responded to a call in the 2200 block of chestnut street about 11 last night. they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. police have a male suspect in custody. they also say there's another person hurt but they're not sure what caused his injuries. authorities say they don't know if the shooting is gang- related. charges have been filed against two men accused of brutally beating giants fan bryan stow. christian live in los angeles where men are in jail. >> reporter: we're here at the l.a. county twin towers correctional facility, the jail in town where two of the three suspects arrested thursday morning are in custody. los angeles county authorities held a news conference yesterday. the mayor standing side by side with the police chief to announce the arrests of 29-year- old louis sanchez, 30-year-old marvin norwood, and 31-year-old

doreen sanchez. the two men closely resemble the description witnesses gave shortly after brine stowe was beaten. witnesses also reported that a woman pulled up in a car and drove the two away. no word if investigators think that woman is doreen sanchez she posted $50,000 bail and out of custody les night we went to a dodger game and saw a number of l.a.p.d. officers patrolling the parking lots. fans there told us they felt safe, the fans also told us they're happy to hear police have made arrests. >> yes, yes. i don't know why it took so long to make the arrests. i haven't heard what happened with the guy they arrested initially. >> that man with is giovanni ramona, under arrest for parole violation since may. the police chief had said he was their prime suspect. he is now cleared as a suspect in the case. and coming out live, the arraignment court is directly

across the street from the jail. the three suspects who were arrested here on thursday are due to go into court on monday to be formally charged in court. criminal complaint against the two men gives some gruesome details of the attack against bryan stowe. police say it included cutting stowe's tongue and disfigure his face. he's been in the hospital since may and his family said there's encouraging news. he mouthed the word stowe when asked his last name and also opened both eyes and gave what appeared to be a thumbs up. more information is coming out today about the man accused of two deadly attacks in moreway. authorities say anders bray vick brought six tons of fertilizer and is charged with act of terrorism. he's accrued of bombing several buildings. the blasts blew out every

window. several hours later authorities say he disguised himself as a police officer and then opened fire at a summer youth camp and a island. right now the two attacks have killed a total of 92 people but that number is expected to rise. authorities are also investigating witness accounts of a possible accomplice. police don't believe he belonged to a terrorist network. police are investigating a shooting in west oakland near the intersection of market and 46th streets at 8:30 last night. officers say the shooting may have started as an attempted robbery. no word on the condition of the victim. and in san francisco, good samaritans helped catch a stabbing suspect. police say an argument escalated into a fight last night outside the dirty trick saloon. authorities say the suspect stabbed two people, one in the arm. the good samaritans chased and tackled the suspect to the ground. firefighters worked through the night to make sure a fire did not flare up again in the

rossmoor area of walnut creek. the flames spread to all eight units. firefighters contained the blaze in about an hour. it's a retirement commune so most of the victims are seniors. >> lady yelling, help, help! >> it was so smoky, you couldn't see, and there was flames from the stove and then flames on the ceiling. >> the fire did not injure anyone but destroyed all eight apartments. red cross and rossmoor did put 13 residents on a bus and get them to a temporary shelter. the cause of that fire still under investigation. firefighters in southern california are continuing to battle a large brushfire. the fire there is burning on the indian reservation 90 minute northeast of san diego. so far, 2800 acres have burned and a fire is only 15% contained. the flames are in a remote area. so far, one cabin has been destroyed. we have continuing coverage about that fatal officer involved shooting in san francisco's bayview district.

police chief is explaining how 19-year-old kenneth harding fatally shot himself. he says the gunfight between harding and police started when officers tried to stop him to see if he had a muni ticketed. it is unclear who shot first but police say the bullet that killed harding came from his own gun. according to the county medical examiner, the bullet retrieved from his head does not match the bullets used in police issued weapons. >> apparently, the officer shot hit the suspect in the leg, so imagine if you would an instant hamstring pain pull would cause the turn to lurch and the gun enter the right side of the neck and lodged behind the cheek. >> police say the gun seen here is most likely harding's. after the shooting someone picked it up and ran away but the chief says they they who that person is and are looking for him. the death of harding sparked a vigil in the neighborhood where he died. last night people gathered to remember harding and other victims of violence. organizers say they held that veg toil allow people to mourn the dead and fight for the

good morning to you! san jose, checking in right about 57 degrees. a light easterly breeze. overnight, a tanker truck carrying gasoline crashed outside boston, setting three nearby bill, on fire. this is new video that we just got into our newsroom. the truck driver was killed and four others were hurt. investigators say it is still not clear when caused the crash but the tanker rolled and burst into flames. it took firefighters three hours to put out the fires. the investigation into a fatal crash between a tractor- trailer and a tour bus in new york will focus on when the bus pulled back on to the road and how fast it was going when it was hit from behind. police say a bus carrying 52 passengers had pulled off new york's main east-west highway yesterday morning because of a mechanical problem. when the driver controversy back on to the road, the bus was hit by a semi-truck and

both vehicles became engulfed in flames. the driver of the truck was killed and three bus passengers were hurt. a man dubbed the cleveland strangler could be sentenced to death. a jury found anthony sowell guilty of murdering 11 women. the trial included testimony from rape victims who survived their attacks. jurors deliberated for more than 15 hours before reaching a verdict. authorities say after killing his victims, he hid her remains throughout his house. another earthquake hit the already battered northeastern part of japan. the magnitude 6.4 quake which centered 257 miles northeast of tokyo in the same area where more than 22,000 people died after the march 11th earthquake and tsunami. there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage from today's quake. in our election 2012 coverage this morning a new g.o.p. presidential poll shows texas governor rick perry leading the pack. even though he hasn't made up his mind about running. the cnn poll shows perry is second only behind mitt romney

with republican support. perry has 14%, compared to 16% from romney. rudy giuliani came in with 13%. sarah palin also came in with 13%. michele bachmann earned 12%. all the other candidates registered in the single digits. poll is good news for the governor, getting strong support from republican men and tea party supporters. he also appears to be taking away support from other candidates, including michele bachmann and newt gingrich. state senator leeland yee is the first official candidate in the san francisco mayor's race. a procession down the street served as an escort. they arrived at city hall with thousands of signatures to register him as a candidate. those signatures will save yee a $5,000 fee. >> the fact that we're the first individual to collect the 10,000 signatures, valid signatures mind you, is just indicates the strengths of our

campaign. >> city attorney dennis herrera and supervisor chew are also expected to run. and there is growing speculation mayor lemay also join the race. today congressman pete stark is going to be back in the bay area for two town hall meetings. the first is going to be held at 9 a.m. at the free monsignor center. the second meeting will be held at 11 a.m. at the alameda city hall. congressman stark plans to address a number of issues, including medicare, recent key votes in the house, and gas prices. right now california's redistricting commission is taking public comment on their plans for contra costa county. the commission is considering moving martinez and pleasant hill into the yolo county voting district. right now the district includes the cities of woodland, west sacramento, davis, and winters. we spoke to city leaders in both pleasant hill and martinez who do not think the plan is a good move for the bay area cities. >> i can't imagine a senator from that district whose basis

is yolo and lake counties, i can't imagine that person having a deep understanding of what central contra costa county and its communities were all about. >> the commission says it is trying to create new districts that best represent geography and population. the new maps will be finalized on august 15th. a south bay mail carrier is hailed as a hero. 49-year-old danny was delivering mail to this townhome in santa clara on wednesday when he saw two girls running out to escape a fire. firefighters were on their way but instead of waiting, the 27- year postal worker took matters into his own hand. >> there was a hose over there, and any neighbor and looked long enough because it was -- like hooked it on, got it in there, and i started spraying the fire. >> the fire damaged the kitchen, but the postal carrier's quick action kept the flames from spreading to the

a man is doing fine this morning, despite being dragged by a car. television crew did happen to be here we this happened. look at that. it captured this on tape. the man hanging on to the window. he thought his friend's stolen purse was in the car. that's why he was hanging on. witnesses can call police and that car did stop. no one filed any charges and no arrests were made. how far would you go to get your wallet back? this man was willing to crawl down that manhole. not a great idea because he did get stuck there. police were called when people saw his legs sticking out of the hole. it took four hours for firefighters -- four firefighters, rather, to pull him out. he was okay. it's not clear whether he was able to retrieve thinks wallet or not. a popular ride at a disney theme park is expected to open this morning one day after that ride came to a halt. two dozen passengers found
