hundreds of same sex couples are tieing the knot in new york. not all same sex couples in san francisco are celebrating. the search is on for an armed man who police say opened fire on officers in the east bay. plus, bart releases a new surveillance video the man they shot and killed a man. the reason the transit agency didn't release it right away. good morning, everyone, welcome to ktvu mornings on 2.

it's sunday, july 24. i'm mike mibach. >> good morning, i'm maureen naylor. >> good morning, it's sort of a ground hogs day, when it comes to weather. assuming you have seen the movie. more of the same, slightly cooler in some areas. for the afternoon, the clouds back with us this morning. a little patchy drizzle, a longer coastline around the clouds have reached inland. upper 50s along the coastline, widespread 80s for inland areas. and the bay area right in between. we'll take a look at what you can expect outside your door for the afternoon, and talk about where we go from here, in just a little bit. new this morning, hundreds of gay couples are saying i do this weekend in new york. >> i now pronounce you legally married. >> the first same-sex marriage was performed just past the

stroke of midnight at niagra falls. new york, became the sixth, and largest state to allow same-sex marriages last month. in preparation, new york city set up a lottery for same sex weddings today. more than 700 ceremonies are expected to take place. one couple who won the lottery says everyone fought hard for the right to marry. >> it's more about something we dreamed about, we pushed so hard for. we rallied for it. >> a ucla study estimates that new york is home to more than 65,000 gay and lesbian couples. >> it comes as the fight over proposition 8 continues here in california. ktvu's alleys rasmus is live. >> as you can see and hear, it is quiet out here in the castro

this morning. there is no celebrating going on, as you saw, and heard from that video in new york. california used to allow same- sex marriage. the first marriage licenses were issued to same sex couples at san francisco's city hall. then in 2008, the california state supreme court made it legal and affirmed that it was allowed in this state. just five months after that, proposition 8 changed things. voters approved it, and disputes over prop 8's legality are still tied up in court right now. since then, gay marriage hasn't happened here in california. some people we talked to this morning say the uncertainty makes it difficult to celebrate what's going on in new york. they say they're frustrated gay marriage doesn't exist in california. >> this was supposed to be a liberal state. some place in new york can pass it and everything, it makes me

really angry. >> just sort of bittersweet. >> yeah, it is. voters voted it down, so i don't know if we're ever going to have it. >> reporter: proposition 8 changed california's state constitution to only recognize marriage between a man and a woman. it is being challenged in court right now. supporters of same-sex marriage say they're trying to gather enough signatures to put another proposition on the ballot next year that would overturn proposition 8. allie rasmus, ktvu, channel 2 news. one group is calling today, hand holding day at california's jewish museum. in response to last weekend, where a security guard told a lesbian couple, hand holding was not allowed. the museum said it did not

effect policy. oakland police are searching for a man who opened fire at officers this morning. it happened around 3:00 a.m. on howly, and lion streets. police say they responded to a call of a man assaulting a woman. when they arrived, officers said the suspect assaulted an officer, then took off. the officers involved were hit by the gunfire. in richmond, a double shooting leaves one man dead, and another in critical condition. just before 10:00 police responded to a call at 24th street, and exchange place. a 20-year-old died at the scene, while a 29-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital. richmond police say this is the city's ninth homicide this month. no arrests have been made. one person is dead after a double shooting in oakley. police responded to shots being fired at o'hara avenue and laurel road at 7:00 last night. authorities found a gunshot victim in a car, he died at a

scene, another man was also shot. he was airlifted to a medical center in walnut creek. authorities say they have determined a person for questioning, and continue to look for additional suspects. time now is 7:05, bart has released a new surveillance video, showing the moments before an officer involved deadly shooting. bart police shot charles hill earlier this month, after officers say he threw a knife and bottle at them. the video shows the area before the scene, but the actual shooting cannot be seen. the chief said he was misinformed, this second video was released, even though police say it has no evidentiary value. a video does not show hill. it shorts part of the platform, and what police say is the bottle, and knife thrown at officers. the video is edited with the faces blurred out to protect the identity of two officers.

you do see the officers get off the train. one of them puts on the gloves and draws his gun. a funeral will be held tomorrow for john caldwell, the best friend of the late oscar graham. he was shot sitting in a cadillac nine days ago. so far, no arrests have been made. caldwell will now be buried right next to oscar graham. the two friends were at the bart station in 2009. there will be a viewing for caldwell today at chapel of the chimes in oakland. his funeral will be held tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. at family bible fellowship in newark. the three suspects in the bryan stow beating are set to be formally charged tomorrow in los angeles. we're learning more about what led investigators to arrest them. los angeles times reports, tips about two aggressive fans at the dodgers stadium, season opener back on march 31 led

investigators to louis sanchez, and marvin norwood. police said maureen sanchez fit the description of the woman driving the getaway car after the beating. stow suffered cuts to his tongue and face. he remains in serious condition. thousands of people packed into the oslo cathedral. a crowd spilled into the plaza outside. the king and queen wiped tears from their eyes during the service. flowers and candled filled a mourning site in oslo. norwegians are being kept away from government buildings out of fear there are bombs hidden in the area. flags are being flown at half staff to honor the 93 victims. new images of the suspect in the twin attacks have

surfaced. the foes include him holding an assault rifle. youtube has since removed the 12 minute video. he said he acted alone and wanted to incite a revolution. before the attack, authorities say he wrote a 15 page manifesto, criticizing muslim manifesto. he denies criminal responsibility. he will be arraigned on terrorism charges tomorrow. families of the victims are accusing norwegian police of arriving too slowly. so far 93 people died in the attacks. 86 at the summer camp. several people remain missing. good morning to you. waking up once again with widespread gray. take a look at what's happening here. a little bit of fog out here this morning. even patchy drizzle along the

home improvements. netflix is in talks with dreamworks for the exclusive streaming rights to its films. a deal could be reached as early as this week. both companies are declining to comment on the story. dreamworks is known for several top films, including the shrek series. netflix is raising prices for those who want both mail and streaming services. movie goers have a new superhero at the box office. captain america, the first avenger is expected to be this weekend's top performing movie. the film grossed more than $25 million on friday alone. that puts it on pace to earn more than $60 million this weekend. harry potter and the deathly hallows part 2 is expected to bring in $14.6 million for the number 2 spot. the four month long nfl lockout could end this week. the players association plans

to meet in washington tomorrow. the executive committee could vote and have an agreement. the players are concerned about the league's personal conduct policy. drug testing, disability plan, and retirement benefits. the famed crystal cathedral could soon be the property of the catholic church. the roman catholic diocese of orange is offering to pay $50 million for the crystal cathedral. the church filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last year. other offers have come from chapman university and an orange county real estate firm. a landmark san francisco theater will show its last film tomorrow. the red vick theater on haight street is closing 31 days to its opening. the red vick was no longer financially sustainable. an autopsy is scheduled to

♪ [ music ] >> same-sex marriages are now underway in new york. welcome back to mornings on 2. >> new york is now the largest state in the country where same- sex marriage is legal, and it comes as the fight over proposition 8 continues right here in california. >> allie rasmus is live in the castro district this morning, with how some people in the bay area are reacting to new york's move. >> reporter: it was a break through for same sex couples in new york, as you saw, many of them getting married this morning. here in the castro, in san francisco, it's just another morning out here. california used to allow same- sex marriages. hundreds of people lined up the civic center city hall to get married. there were some legal issues and legal wrangling. four years after that in 2008,

the california supreme court made it legal and affirmed that same-sex marriage was allowed in san francisco. however that same year, voters changed that with proposition 8. which now changes california state constitution to allow recognized marriage between a man and a woman. since then, there's been a lot of legal haggling over the legality of proposition 8. some people say, even though gay marriage no longer exists in california, they're still happy about what happened in new york. >> i think it's one more drop in the bucket. yeah. it's like one more country in the world that is giving people equality. >> it means a lot to california, because it's something that we can lead, something we can talk about, and we can say, we want this. because it's something that is in new york and it's a breakthrough. >> reporter: meanwhile, supporters of same-sex marriage say they're now trying to gather enough signatures to put

another proposition on the ballot next year, that could possibly overturn proposition 8. someone was shot and killed outside a target store. it happened at a shopping center on main street just after 6:00 in the evening. an 18-year-old man, and a 27- year-old woman were shot. police believe the shooting was gang related. your time is 7:32. a dozen people are recovering after a shooting at a crowded shopping center in washington state. they were injured yesterday afternoon during a low rider car show. none was injuries is life- threatening. police say it's still not clear what prompted the shooting, but they believe it may be gang related. a child's birthday ended with a deadly mass shooting in texas. it happened at a skating rink

in dallas. investigators believe the shooting was sparked by a domestic dispute. the children and rink employees escaped unharmed. a 17-year-old sacramento girl is unharmed this morning after being buried in a bodega bay sand tunnel. she was pulled out by bistanders, but had stopped breathing. she was revived by cpr, and was breathing by when emergency personnel arrived. the teenager was transported to the hospital. it was just last month, a teenager from orinda was buried at a beach. ryan buchanan was buried for 10 minutes after the sand gave way and collapsed on him. doctors say he is in a perpetual vegetative state, and may never be able to move on his own again. san francisco police arrested two men in the shooting of an 11-year-old

girl. the suspects are 18, or 19 years old, and their names have not been released. witnesses say the gunmen fired off several shots. some in an apartment, and one went through a bedroom window. the girl was listening to her ipod, when a stray bullet hit her in the chest. >> i was sort of, went deaf. i could hear something really loud, the shattering of glass. she came out again, and said i've been shot. >> the girl's uncle says she is in critical condition, but stable, after undergoing surgery at san francisco's general hospital. the criminal investigative unit, and gang task force are investigating the shooting. oakland police continue to search this morning for the gunman who shot a woman outside an oakland coffee shop. witnesses say it was a friday night when they began grabbing laptops from customers. one of the patrons tried to

stop the men and one of them shot a woman in the leg. >> i've never been close to anything like this happening. >> police say the woman was transported to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. police in pleasant hill could soon have to pay more for healthcare premiums and retirement costs. this comes after three months of negotiations between the city and the police officer association. fire investigators say a fire that ripped through the ross more retirement complex began near a stove. a fire marshal tells the contra costa times that the cause is still undetermined, but the flames started in the kitchen of unit number 4. the fire displaced more than a dozen people. many of them seniors. so far, the investigators say

the building appears to have met all safety codes. a fight to keep pediatric departments open. kaiser permanenty plans to open from a facility in hayward to a new medical center in san leandro in 2014. without a pediatric unit. pediatric nurses showed up to ask for support support the unit and their jobs. one nurse says families throughout the east bay will suffer. >> not having a unit in san leandro decreases access for the families, and it's a long way for people from fremont to drive to oakland, or santa clara to visit their children. very difficult for many of our families. >> the nurses say they received support from congressman pete stark at yesterday's meeting. the bickering in washington could cost airport employees their jobs and passengers money. funding for the federal aviation administration officially ran out this weekend. while flights will take off as scheduled, future construction

projects at 19 airports across the state are now up in the air. oakland international was set to receive nearly $3 million for improvements such as pavement work along the runways. >> there are projects that are mid-construction projects that are in mid-improvement. now they stop, they're not going to be delivered on time. >> starting tomorrow, congress works on an extension to fund the faa. if they can't reach a deal, more than 200 employees in california could have furloughs. while passengers say they have saved $20, some airlines have raised prices to offset any customer savings. looking at san jose this morning. are you ready for more of the same? perhaps even slightly cooler in some spots. we'll explain in just a moment. let's take a look at the

of the country may finally be loosening up, after several triple digit days across the east coast. temperatures could dip into the 80s as soon as tomorrow. but the extreme heat has already taken its toll. more than a dozen people have died due to the weather. water usage in new york yesterday was 50% higher than normal. mother nature turned on the water in the midwest. record rainfall in chicago. all of that water flooded roads and backed up traffic. the storm also knocked out power to more than 150,000 customers. storm dora should weaken to a depression today. dora is west of cabo san lucas and moving parallel along baja. forecasters say dora is no longer a threat. they've canceled storm warnings

afternoon. new this morning, we are getting more details about the ongoing debt showdown. within the last 30 minutes we have learned president obama will veto any debt package that does not extend the nation's debt ceiling to 2013. this is video of negotiations that took place yesterday in washington, d.c. in the last few weeks, republicans have proposed only extended the debt ceiling to 2012. the deadline is august 2. also new this morning, the obama administration has invited north korean leaders to the u.s. the white house wants to resume talks to eliminate pyongyang's nuclear program. last friday, north and south careera -- korea met for the first time since disarmament

talks stopped in 2008. in cairo, egypt, a demonstration against the slow pace of government reforms turned violent. thousands marches to the ministry of defense. marchers fired back. more than 140 people were injured. the demonstrators were upset military rulers currently are running egypt. rescue operations are continuing in china after two bullet trains collided. it happened when one train stalled on the tracks after a power outage. chinese media reports several passengers had to smash windows, and crawl out of the cars to escape. venezuelan president, hugo chavez returned home. doctors removed a baseball sized tumor last month.

the u.s. justice department has declined a request to reinvestigate the assassination of malcolm x. over the years, supporters have accused various groups from the nation of islam, to law enforcement, and drug dealers. supporters plan to appeal to president obama and congress. nine republican presidential candidates have been chosen, excuse me, for next month's early straw poll in the all important state of iowa. two potential candidates have been excluded. rick perry is not. he is expected to announce his bid in the coming weeks. sara palin also was excluded. she is not expected to make a decision before late august. mitt romney, and john huntsman will be in the straw poll. neither of them are mounting a

significant campaign in iowa. another poll shows president obama facing possible trouble in the election. a new rasmussen poll shows the president in a virtual tie with mitt romney. when stacked against ron paul, mr. obama beats paul by 4 points. 41% to 37%. time is 7:47. there are calls for an oregon congressman to resign after a california teenager accused him of an unwanted sexual encounter. the report that he was involved with the 18-year-old daughter of a friend and campaign donor in california. it reportedly happened during a visit over thanksgiving. according to the oregonen, the democratic representative said

it was consensual. a retired army general has died. he was one of president clinton's military advisers. he retired a stroke in 2004 and died yesterday from complications. he was 75 years old. walter reed army medical center is preparing to close its doors. a farewell ceremony will be held on wednesday. the hospital will close down for good in mid-september. the facility is more than a century old and has served presidents and thousands of wounded troops. in 2007, the hospital was found to have substandard conditions and long waits. patients will sooning treated at a new hospital in bethesdamaryland, that will also be named walter reed.

officer, then ran off. the suspect jumped over a fence and got away. none of the officers involved were hit by the gunfire. time is 8:01. one man is dead, and another is in critical condition. a 20-year-old died at the scene, a 29-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital. authorities are looking into a possible gang connection. richmond police say this is the city's ninth homicide this month. no arrests have been made. law enforcement in contra costa county is investigating a double shooting of its own. one person died at the scene. the other was airlifted to john muir medical center in walnut creek. authorities say they have detained one person for questioning and they continue to look for additional suspects. new this morning, we are getting our first look at the

first same sex weddings in new york state. >> i now pronounce you legally married! >> the first same-sex marriage was performed just past the stroke of midnight at niagra falls. new york became the sixth, and largest state to allow gay marriages last month. clerks and judges across the state will be opening their doors today to gay couples. new york's legalization of same- sex marriage comes as the fight over proposition 8 continues here in california. allie rasmus is live in san francisco with reaction. >> reporter: here in the castro neighborhood, it is pretty quiet out here. when we talked to gay marriage supporters here, they say this law in new york is a little bittersweet for them. california used to allow gay marriage, but not anymore. >> this is supposed to be a

liberal state. a place like new york passes it, it kind of makes me angry. voters voted it down. i don't know if we're ever going to have it. >> reporter: what he was talking about voters approving was proposition 8. before that in 2004, same-sex marriage licenses were voted to couples. in 2008, the supreme court affirmed those marriages were legal. just a few months after that, voters approved proposition 8 which changed the state constitution to recognize only marriage between a man and a woman. some say what's going on in new york is a victory for gay marriage everywhere. >> i think it's one more drop in the bucket. it's like one more country in the world that is giving people equality. >> it's a break through on men different levels. i think that california deserves it. >> reporter: new york is the sixth state in the country to

allow gay marriage. here in california, the legal wrangling and challenges to proposition 8 continue. although supporters of gay marriage say they would like to put a new measure on the ballot in 2012 that could overturn prop 8. norway's royal family led a memorial service for the victims in the twin attacks. the king and queen wiped tears from their eyes during the service that was deemed sorrow and hope. hundreds of mourners turned out for a candlelight vigil last night. flags are being flown at half staff to honor the 93 victims.

new images of the suspect have surfaced. someone posted the photos on youtube on friday. the photos include anders breivik holing an assault rifle. breivik told his lawyer, he acted alone and wanted to incite a revolution. before the attack, authorities say he wrote a 1500 page manifesto, criticizing muslim immigration and integration. he will be arraigned on terrorism charges tomorrow. families of the victims are accusing norwegian police of responding too slowly to the island massacre. authorities arrived an hour and a half after the first shooting. so far, 93 people have died in the two attacks. 86 people were killed at the summer camp. several other individuals remain missing, and late word,

british muslim leaders say they will increase security at mosques in the wake of the attacks. san francisco police have arrested two young man in connection with the shooting of a an 11-year-old girl. officers say the suspects are 18, or 19 years old. their names have not been released. witnesses say the gunmen fired off several shots late friday night. some hit an apartment, and one went through a bedroom window. the girl was inside, listening to her ipod, when the bullet hit her in the chest. >> i'm surprised because it went through somebody's window. >> there's been quite a few killings and a murder. even on this one block alone. >> the girl's uncle says she's in critical condition, but is stable after undergoing surgery at san francisco general hospital. the police department's criminal investigative unit, and gang task force are investigating the shooting. congressional leaders are expected to unveil the

framework of a debt limit this afternoon. democrats accuse republicans of refusing to compromise. they want a deal that raises the debt limit through at least 2013. boehner is demanding up to $4 trillion in deficit cuts. he hopes to announce some progress this afternoon, to avoid plunging stock markets. keith stark remains optimistic both sides will broker a deal. he says a government default or shut down will not happen, because the political stakes are too high. >> the parties that did it last, whether it was us or the republicans got blamed and lost a lot of seats. they've got to let it go. >> august 2 is the deadline to raise the debt ceiling. republicans want spending cuts

the three were caught in crossfire along a highway. in overnight news a shooting spree at a washington state casino. it happened in the city of auburn. about 30 miles south of seattle. the gunman entered a nightclub around 1:30 this mortgage. he was apparently looking for his wife or girlfriend, but found her with another man. the gun man shot those two and five other people. two other victims are in critical condition. a security guard tackled the suspect as he tried to escape. more than 1,000 firefighters are tackling a wildfire outside of san diego this morning. the fire has now burned through 10,000 acres of thick brush. this is video from friday. cal fire says the fire is now 30% contained. no homes or structures are threatened. flames broke out near a military range. a man already charged with

a decade's old rape and murder in san jose is charged with another rape and murder. the santa clara sheriff's department be says holland was linked through dna evidence. he is already facing charges in the death of cynthia munoz. family and friends are morning the loss of a palo alto family. robert howard, his wife, and the couple's 9-year-old and 12- year-old daughters all died friday afternoon into british columbia. authorities say the family's camper collided with a fuel tanker truck. the truck driver escaped withoutier. nine republican presidential candidates have been chosen for next month's early straw poll in the all

leaving, some patrons tried to stop them. one of the men pulled a gun and fired, shooting a woman in the leg. >> i've lived in the bay area for 14 years and i've never been this close to anything like this happening. >> police say the woman was taken to the hospital and will survive. police officers in pleasant hill could soon have to pay for more retirement. they will vote tomorrow to impose a one year contract on officers that will raise healthcare premiums and retirement costs. the city says the proposal would save more than $280,000 this year. nfl players could return to the field this week. the players association plans to meet in washington tomorrow. the executive committee could vote and approve a new 10 year labor agreement. they would then recommend all 1900 players ratified deal. the players are concerned about the league's personal conduct

marriage licenses were issued to same sex couples at san francisco's city hall. in 2008, the supreme court affirmed those marriages were legal. just a few months after that, california voters approved proposition 8, which changed the state constitution to only recognize marriage between a man and a woman. the validity is still being challenged in court, supporters of gay marriage say they would like to gather enough support and signatures to put up a new proposition in 2012, that could overturn prop 8. live in san francisco, allie rasmus, ktvu, channel 2 news. san francisco's contemporary jewish museum is calling today hand holding day. the action is in response to an incident last weekend, where a security guard told a lesbian couple hand holding was not allowed. museum officials have said the guard's actions did not reflect museum policy. and that the person would not be employeed in the future.

today's event coincides with lbgt mourning of gertrude stein. new this morning, a tearful memorial service for the victims of norway attacks. thousands of people tacked the oslo cathedral today, for an overflow crowd. norway's king wiped away deers during the service termed sorrow and hope. new images of the suspect appeared on the internet. a 12 minute video contains andres breivik. he will be arraigned on terrorism charges tomorrow. the suspect said he was against muslim integration in europe. muslims are adding extra security at mosques in the wake of the news. they have not confirmed a

manifesto was written by breivik, but his lawyer has referred to it. three people are scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow in the beating of bryan stow. the report also said doreen sanchez fit the description of the woman driving the getaway vehicle after the beating. bryan stow remains in serious condition at san francisco general hospital. time is 8:34. bart has released a new surveillance video, showing the moments before an officer involved deadly shooting. officers shot and killed charles hill earlier this month after officials said he threw a knife and bottle at them. bart police said there was only one video viable from the shooting. the chief later said he was misinformed.

this second video was released, eastbound though police say it -- even though police say it has no evidentiary value. police show the bottle and knife thrown at officers. you can see the officers that get off the train. one of them puts on the gloves and draws his gun. both videos have been turned over to the san francisco police department. a funeral will be held tomorrow for john caldwell. no arrests have been made. he will be buried next to oscar grant. the two friends were at the bart station in 2009, when grant was killed by police. time is 8:35. watsonville police are search

forgot a gunman after someone was shot and killed outside a target store. it happened on main street. a man and woman were shot in the parking lot, while walking to their car. the man died at the scene, the woman was taken to the hospital. police believe the shooting was gang related. a 17-year-old girl is in the hospital after being buried in a bodega bay sand tunnel. she was pulled out by bistanders but had stopped breathing. she was revived by cpr and was breathing when emergency personnel arrived. the teen was taken by ambulance to the hospital. just last month, a teenager from morango was buried alive. he was buried for 10 minutes after sand gave way and collapsed on him. doctors say he may never be

able to move on his own again. fire investigators say a fire that destroyed the ross more retirement complex in walnut creek began near a stove. the cause is still undetermined, but flames started in the kitchen of unit 4. friday's fire displaced a number of residents, many of them seniors. family for the federal aviation administration officially ran out this weekend. while flights will take off as scheduled, future construction projects are now up in the air. >> mid-construction projects, now they stop. they're going to be more

extensive, they're not going to be delivered on time. >> if they can't reach a deal, more than 200faa employees in california could face furloughs. no funding also means no airline ticket taxes for the time being. while passengers have said they have saved about $20. some airlines have raised prices to offset any savings. homeland security removed sacramento and 33 other cities from the grant. it will lose money that will have gone to emergency preparedness. about 30 high risk cities, including san francisco and los angeles will still receive the federal grant, which started after the 9/11 attack. bay area nurses have launched a fight to keep

pediatric facilities open. pediatric nurses at the hospital showed up at a town hall meeting in free month yesterday to ask for support for the unit and their jobs. one nurse says without a pediatric unit, families throughout the area will suffer. >> it's a long way for people from fremont to drive to oakland, or santa clara to visit their children. very difficult for many of our families. >> the nurses say they received store from congressman pete stark at yesterday's meeting. the new kaiser facility will replace the hayward center. which does not meet seismic regulations. clouds have returned to the area. we have a light southwesterly breeze this morning. a better onshore push, a thicker marine layer, and the sunshine is going to come a little later. temperature wise, 57 degrees santa rosa. upper 50s, san francisco.
