bay police officer. jade hernandez is there where officers hope the daylight will help them with the search. >> reporter: good morning. at the bottom of the hour we can tell you that the gate to rancho laguna park is closed. once the sun comes up, authorities are expected to be back out here looking for suspects in the shooting and evidence of a possible marijuana grow in the rugged terrain. last night around 6:30, a police officer on foot found himself under fire near this reservoir. he returned fire. the officer only knew two people fired an assault rifle at him. the east bay police used the armored rescued vehicle to get the information to safety. he was not hurt. the search continued until around 10:00 last night to find the suspects. a helicopter in the sky and officers from five different law enforcement agencies including the contra costa sheriff's office and the highway patrol could not find anyone. authorities say it appears the

officer may have come upon an illegal drug grow in the area. >> we have a history of this area in years past where we had marijuana grows. we actually have pictures a couple of years ago where we have armed guards on a grow operation. >> reporter: the search for evidence and suspects was called off late last night because of lack of visibility. we checked in with dispatch. we were told the watch commander should be in the office after 8:00 this morning. we will keep you updated. antidrug agents are now conducting raids across six northern california counties. the goal is to rid the mendocino national forest of the illegal marijuana farms that are doing a booming business. the operation reportedly involves hundreds of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. so far drug agents made more than 70 arrests and seized

nearly 300,000 plants. new this morning, everyone is back in their homes but that is after a fire at an apartment building in san francisco. it happened on montgomery street near green at about 1:15 this morning. it appears that the fire started on the roof and spread to the penthouse. the exact cause is still being investigated. some of the apartments sustained minor water damage. no injuries are reported. well, this morning, 18-year- old victor martin is back at home in richmond after surviving a grizzly bear attack in the mountains of alaska. >> on saturday night, martin was on a survival skills hike with six other people when they came face to face with a mother bear and her cub. martin was in the front of the group and suffered a bite wound to his ankle trying to fight off the bear. his older sister says it's a relief to finally have him

home. >> it was nerve-racking. we were frightened. we wouldn't have expected something like this to happen, not to our brother, know. we are happy he is home and safe and strong. >> martin was in alaska as part of a 30-day wilter december trip. two people who were on the hike suffered serious injuries during the attack. they are still in the hospital in anchorage. a bear in north lake take who was shot and killed after wondering into a supermarket parking lot sunday at incline village. nevada wildlife officials say the 350-pound bear walked up to people sitting at an outdoor cafe. a wildlife crew captured and killed the bear. they say this is the third time that this bear had to be captured by wildlife workers. a woman was shot in north beach last night as she was walking home. that happened just before 10:00 last night on francisco street

between mason and taylor. officers say the woman was walking home when she heard a rapid succession of gunfire. then she realized she was shot in the back. the woman went to san francisco general hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. san francisco police do not believe that she was the intended target. san francisco police are calling the death of a man last night suspicious. officers went to a home on prospect avenue at about 6:30 yesterday evening. investigators examined the area before taking away the body a few hours later. well, for the first time, we are hearing from the mother of one of the defendants in the bryan stow beating case. marvin norwood and louie sanchez are behind bars on a half million dollars bail. they are scheduled to be arraigned on assault and battery charges on august 10th. they are accused of knocking stow to the ground outside of

donning gears stadium then -- dodgers stadium then beating him. stow suffered a traumatic brain injury during the attack. norwood's mother, diana page said she visited her son in jail. she refused to say what was discussed but insists that norwood is innocent. >> he wasn't one to provoke anything. and if there was a problem, you know, he took care of it, but not with his fists all the time. he use used his brain. in my hearty know that he did not do it. >> we obtained court documents accusing louie sanchez of hurling an object at a woman wearing a giant's shirt during the same night. fans in the same section of norwood and sanchez reported them for acting like belligerent aggressive jerks. stow is at san francisco

couple of degrees of each other. high pressure is building in from the east. it's trying. the last time we had heat was july 4th. that's it. temperatures have been held in check due to low pressure on the west coast. i talked to a friend of mine back from seattle. coolest summer they had in a few years. they had 74 hours of 80 degrees or above. that's it in seattle. that's how cool it has been. 74 hours of 80 and above. yesterday they had rain. our high pressure system is trying to come back. i don't see any extreme one way or the other. we will see gradual warming. there will be temperatures coming into the 80s and 90s through the valley. nothing too outrageous. mild to warm. a little breeze at times. overall temperatures are creeping up a bit. 60s, 70s then mid- to upper-70s working your way inland. nothing outrageous. i do think we will see an increase in the inland temps,

now. sunny, breezy at times. 67 close to the coast. mid-80s inland. we are now just one week away from the deadline to raise the u.s. debt limit but the stand off in washington continues. president obama made a last ditch call for compromise in a televised address last night. it was quickly followed by house speaker john boehner who said the president is the one being inflexible. >> this is no way to run the greatest country on earth. it's a dangerous game that we have never played before. we can't afford to play it now. >> the president often said we need a balanced approach which in washington means we spend more and you pay more. >> in his speech, the president asked people to contact their representatives in congress and urged them to solve the debt problems through compromise. so many people did what the president asked that the web sites of many lawmakers crashed. well, many americans are stressing over their own

personal debt. an associated press poll shows 20% of americans worry about their debt all or most of the time. 29% worry about it some of the time but surprisingly 46% say debt is hardly ever or not a worry. the remaining 5% are debt free. later today the post master general will announce its plans to close more post offices. a list of as many as 3600 post offices that could be on the chopping block will be released. they will all be reviewed to determine which ones will be shut down. 280 facilities have already been closed. postal service lost $8 billion last year. well, the city of palo alto is trying to figure out how to spend a $40 million windfall. that money comes from sanford university. it's what the school agreed to pay in exchange for permission to redevelop and expand the stanford medical center. the money comes in three

payments with nearly 16 million due this year. >> exchange for that land use commitment that the city made, we get community benefits in exchange. >> i would like to see more parks and libraries, things like that and infrastructure. it requires the city to spend on green initiatives and infrastructure. the city is looking for public input on how to spend the money. it faces a $7 million budget deficit next year but no firm decisions are expected right away. california voters may be asked for a second time whether marijuana should be legalized for recreational use. supporters of legalization received the okay from california's secretary of state to begin collecting signatures to put a new initiative on the ballot. it would tax sales of marijuana. supporters need to collect more than 500 signatures. voters rejected a similar bill

in november. california's new law requiring gay history to be taught in public schools could be headed for the court of public opinion. several conservative organizations want voters to decide if senate bill 48 should be overturned. the law, which governor brown signed earlier this month says historical contributions by gays and lesbians should be included in textbooks and lesson plans including people like harvey milk. >> when you start talking about changing history textbooks to please a special interest group, that is what really raised people's haeckels. >> mark leno wrote the original bill. he believes california voters would reject the ballot measure and up hold the new law. the world's most popular wizard may have lost box office magic the last week. harry potter had the biggest box opening ever but the same movie experienced a huge

decline during the second weekend in theaters. business at the box office dropped off 72%. no one is sure why but the last harry potter movie faced strong competition from captain america and other new films. it's now 4:49. getting kids to wear safety helmets is never an easy task but a tragic accident in san mateo could convince them. two whales stray way off course. why it may be too late to save them.

welcome back. three redwood city boys convicted of assaulting female classmates during a field trip are facing jail time. a 12-year-old admitted to sexual battery and could receive a sentence of up to a

year. a 13 and 14-year-old boy pled guilty to lewd and lascivious acts. they could spend up to eight years behind bars. authorities say the kennedy middle school students attacked two girls during a field trip last march. the school district is also investigating the incident. there is a new push for helmet safety in pacifica after the death of a 15-year-old boy. yesterday friends and family gathered along palmetto avenue to remember crossly. he was hit by a minivan riding his bike friday afternoon. he wasn't wearing a helmet and he suffered a massive head injury. he died the next day at the hospital. >> this type of tragedy goes to show you that something bad can happen and someone basically riding his bicycle with a get together with friends could have a tragedy occur. >> police say it's against the law for anyone under the age of 18 to ride a bike without a

helmet but everyone on a bicycle should have a helmet. last week a 25-year-old san francisco woman was hit by a truck riding her bike. she was also not wearing a helmet and died from a head injury. time to check in with sal for a look at traffic. >> we don't have any problems. people are actually starting off okay this morning, pam. let's go outside and take a look at -- actually, i lied. there is a slight accident southbound 101 on the shoulder. yes, so, i would say this is a problem for the people involved but not a problem for you if you happen to be driving by. if you are driving by to southern marin it looks good to the golden gate bridge. the morning commute is moving well on interstate 80 westbound as you drive out to the macarthur maze. no problems here. i can say that for sure. this morning's drive in san jose on 280 and 101, we are off

to a good start here. >> good morning. not as much fog. we have some fog but nothing compared to yesterday when it just charged out to the sacramento valley. usually when it does that it maxes itself out. sunny today, warmer, a skosh. about the same or slightly warmer into tomorrow. the weekend, there is no sign of any change. the ten day outlook keeps everything locked in. warmer then backs it off into august. high pressure continues to dominate most of the country, just not the west coast. low clouds are there. sea breeze is still there. yesterday it was relationship roaring about 30 miles per hour through -- rip roaring about 30 miles per hour through the delta. mid-50s. we will give way to 60s when we get going.

last term as governor. he served as foreman of a jury that acquitted a man of malicious mischief. two whales found swimming six miles from the ocean are in danger. the mother and calf are stranded in the freshwater 29 days now. scientists say it appears the mother is not eating and the calf may have headed back out to sea by itself. >> if the calf has been separated from the mother, at this age, the calf may not be able to survive on its own. >> marine biologists say the whales heading to calmer water is not uncommon and it happens frequently, especially when a whale is sick. it's coming up on 5:00. there was gunfire at an east bay park. a manhunt is set to resume at first light. we will have a live report.
