in oregon. the officials received a tip walker is hiding out there with friends, wanted in the death of two killings, including michael roth. he is also suspected of shooting two other men, one of those victims died. walker will be taken to the bay area to face homicide charges. and in san quentin, they say a worker there was pinned against the loading dock. the prisoner had surgery this afternoon. our reporter will have an update on the condition and the circumstances surrounding the accident, coming up on bay area over at 7:00. and one day after the massive six alarm fire in fairfield that we covered all afternoon, there are concerns tonight about a toxic aftermath. the ktvu health and science center expert says the concerns may be over-blown, john? >> reporter: what is left is the twisted metal fence, steel

fence that burned around the macro plastics yard. you can also see what is left of thousands and thousands of these plastic boxes. ktvu chopper two first brought you these spectacular pictures. and within the area was plastic, people today are nervous. >> i was sitting out here and got a little dizzy, and my chest was congested. >> reporter: she said she kept her children inside yesterday. but in this neighborhood, less than a mile from the plastics plant cars, houses still are dusted with dots of the burned residue. >> my concern is the site -- the fact -- dealing with my family later. >> reporter: today, workers looked through the charred remains of as many as 15,000 plastic crates, they issued the shelter in place yesterday. although tests are still pending they now think the smoke was not very toxic. >> you know carbon monoxide, the water, the chemicals, they

typically burn off during the fire, very similar to what you see in any sort of wildfire. >> reporter: experts say the reason there is not a concern is because of the composition of the boxes. they say the chemicals don't contain the hazards found in other plastics which make them highly toxic when they burn. reporting live, ktvu channel 2 news. a cleanup under way in southern california after a major freight train derailment. they say almost half of the cars jumped the tracks in a high desert area of northern los angeles county, the accident happening about 1:25 this afternoon in the community of little rock. it is not a heavily poplated area, but some homes were evacuated while the officials determine if any cars contain hazardous materials and are leaking. no injuries at this time have been reported. and tonight the debt showdown is getting intense,

just six days until the country hits the borrowing limit. and as democrats and republicans work on several plans to raise the debt limit, here is what our lawmakers are doing to find the solution. bay area lawmakers say their constituents fear a default, telling them? >> i'm scared about my social security benefits. >> we're tired of this, fix it. >> reporter: but as of tonight there is no fix. house speaker john boehner delayed a key vote after government number crunchers found his proposal wouldn't deliver the deficit savings promised. he defended the plan. >> he is keeping the promise to cut spending more than any increase in the debt limit with no tax hikes. >> reporter: bay area democrats had hard words for the plan new . >> i don't think any democrats will vote for this, i won't vote for that. it will cut benefits to medicare and social security. >> reporter: they say the best way to break the dead lock is to have two separate votes, one to raise the debt ceiling and another one later on to reduce

america's credit ratings, support columns of our economy. >> they need to reduce the deficit. and what are the real plans for reducing it. how can you get all that passed by -- next week? >> reporter: time, or lack of it, is hurting their nerves, last week the market lost 43, monday, another 88. yesterday, a 92-point loss and today it pushed the losses up to almost 200 more points. in four days, 422 points lost. >> wall street has ways of sending messages to washington. and one of them the strongest, is by declines in the market place. >> reporter: to him, the message is clear. >> wall street is saying get something done, make it a conclusion, a viable plan. and they will be more nervous as you get closer to the date. and don't reach a resolution. so i would expect more downward action. >> reporter: in fact, the

market's fixed index is a measure of how the trading is going on, that is rising up 15%. it could get worse tomorrow. reporting live, ktvu channel 2 action news. and with all that in mind, here is the way the stock market ended the day. as tom said, investors are worried about a down grade for the nation's credit rating, a move that would likely raise interest rates and be another blow to an already nervous economy. the dow lost 198 points today, more than one and a half percent of the value, the nasdaq lost 5 points, a lost of 2.7%. and two dozen airline flights cancelled today when a number of pilots called in sick. they have been fighting with the union over consolidation plan. the flights leaving were cancelled today as well as two flying into san francisco. there were no cancellations at

san francisco manetta airport. and promising to review a security agency situation in the wake of mass shooting. there is an independent commission to be set to determine what happened. there has been criticism that police were slow to respond to the attacks, and some officers say they had problems with communication systems when the first calls for help came in. police in norway today destroyed explosives found at the home of the suspect in last week's killing spree. they tore up what they say was a hidden supply of bombs at a farm rented by anders behring breivik. the authorities didn't say how many explosives they found, but say they destroyed them all. they also say that anders behring breivik used the area to store fertilizer for the bombs. and releasing a private assessment of safety. ninos yacoub and badal and

. tonight, the gray whale calf that was stranded in the river was believed to be safe back in the ocean. that is the good news, the bad news is, her mother is still swimming in circles in the river. and there is a real concern she may not survive. all this is happening on the indian reservation just south of cla mouth, california. ken pritchett has more on the whale. >> reporter: take a look behind me here across the bridge. it crosses the cla math river, close to here you can see the people looking out there close to the ocean, whale watching in the river below. here is what they're seeing. most of the time she circles from one side of the bridge to the other, over and over and the people follow, including pam bryant, from nevada city. >> normally they're in a

whaling boat, so you may get close but kind of are at the same level looking down. oh my god. >> reporter: the 45-foot gray whale has been here in the river about a month, much of the time spent in this very spot along highway 101. scientists have tried to scare her away with boats and loud noises . >> they tried to make killer whale sounds there to scare her, get the incentive to head out. that didn't affect her. >> reporter: one of the program managers with the tribe here discusses the river. the mother whale was with her calf until saturday when the calf was spotted swimming back to sea. >> they think that now she is back in the ocean she will have plenty of feed and salt water for her skin. she will do quite well, they expect. >> reporter: he is in close contact with the scientists, who say the whale is relatively healthy, but without food that can't last long.

services. >> the director hopes it can be a bridge between police, the city and the immigrant community, especially for women who face issues with domestic violence. and san mateo issues on the new trail that would offer more space to bike riders along alpine road. the supervisors have rejected the offer twice in the last five years, but want to give it another chance before the offer expires. some residents say the current proposal doesn't do enough to make the roads safer for bike riders. there will soon be a little more beef to spread out on when you go to lake tahoe. this year's heavy snow melt is the highest level recorded, covering as much as 40 feet. they say the evaporated areas are lowering the lake levels in the coming days. and making for a tough fight against a wildfire burning for a week in san diego county. the firefighters say the

space station into the ocean, it can't be left to be space junk because it would threaten other space craft. nasa officials say it would be a waste to destroy it. they want to use part of it to carry humans to mars. and the air force today forced to destroy an unarmed missile. the missile blasted off about 3:00 this morning from the air force base. five minutes later the missile was 4200 miles away, over the marshal islands. but the air force found a problem and destroyed it. it is the second problem in five weeks with the missile launch, and icbm launched on june 22, successfully reached the target. but a mission control system malfunctioned, forcing ground control to issue the commands. and keeping tobacco away from children. up next, the move the city made to get a passing grade.

. the star wars creator lost a bat until the supreme court today, ruling that the famous white storm trooper helmets are props instead of art work, therefore are not protected by british copy right law. he has been fighting the company selling the helmets over the internet. they can't be sold in the united states because american law protects the copy right. and critics of california's new gay history law hopes that it will be overturned. they are looking at the mandate in the schools, and it doesn't take effect until the 2013 school year. opponents received approval to collect signatures to put a referendum on the ballot to try to stop the law. and california's vote by mail system no longer to be paid for by the state. but election officials in most counties say they will continue to keep the system in place, because vote by mail helps spread out the cost, and also

director was thrilled that an anonymous angel stepped in to save them and their animals. the valley humane society says despite their good fortune today, they still need lots of donations to keep their doors open in the future. and the obama administration winning a new law in the bat of the stem cell research. a federal judge threw out a lawsuit claiming the white house violated a law that prohibits taxpayer funding for work that harms an embryo. for ruling allows them to continue to work on a wide range of stem cell projects, searching for clues to a wide range of diseases. and the tobacco coalition of the bay area gave the area a b grade on the annual report card. last year, san jose received an f. the city worked on the tobacco control policies earlier this year.

. the campaign to persuade san francisco mayor ed lee to run for a full term is getting a lot of boost from u.s. senator diana feinstein. in a written statement, feinstein, a former mayor of san francisco urges interim mayor lee to run for a four year term in november. she says i believe the city of san francisco needs a steady leadership in making the presence at city hall more uniform. to them, her endorsement is huge. >> it will bring together women who support them and the political factions that support them. she brings another piece of san

with see-through advertising. they say it could bring in half a million. the ad campaign is set to begin on september one. and a student driver slamming right into the dmv office in roseville this week. now the dmv is considering a warning to driving teachers. they say the 17-year-old apparently hit the gas instead of the brake, leaving a huge hole in the side of the building. the dmv is now thinking about warning private teachers not to have students practice in that parking lot. and whole foods to open a store in detroit, the only national grocery chain to have a store within the city limits. whole foods will have a 20,000 square foot store open in 2013, and employ 27 people there. many complain that they have to go to the suburbs to get their groceries. and british researchers found that the bypass surgery may change what people like to eat. it looks at several who had

weight loss surgery. six years after the surgery, the patients had a significantly smaller proportion of fat in their diet. the study's authors say they don't know why the patients seem to crave less high fat foods. university of michigan scientists say there is no link between menopause and diabetes. however the risk drops dramatically if women lose weight and exercise regularly. scientists studied 1,200 women who went through natural menopause or had their ovaries removed. scientists say menopause is a step in the aging process, but not a step towards poor health. and looking at a lion attack, people are concerned for their children's safety, more coming up. and animals found dead at a summer camp. now this letter is going out to parents. what authorities believe happened and why they're sending out an emergency alert to people who live in the area. back here, less than 10 minutes i'll talk about this
