a community volunteer in oakland has died after being shot while feeding the homeless. people in oakland's fruitvale district are mourning the man they knew as brother john. paris palo was handing out food when he was gunned down in front of his family. he died late last night. palo ran the homeless foundation that helps abused children and women. >> he was a good man. >> reporter: palo's wife and 3- year-old stepdaughter were also hit. they suffered minor injuries. today police are asking for help on finding palo's killer. los angeles police arrested giovanni ramirez in may on a parol violation for having access to a firearm. at the time police said they were sure he was the person who beat bryan stow but he was never charged in the assault.

ramirez' attorney says that police returned to judgment. last week police completely exonerated ramirez in the stow case after announcing the arrest of two other men, louie sanchez and norwood. customers say a man came into the mong hon coffee shop. bought a tea and sat looking out the window. that's when he walked out and police arrested him. police then asked everyone to come outside, he checked to make sure there were no suspects outside. tonight at 10:00, amber lee will talk to patrons about what they saw unfold. a passenger scuffle on board a plane that ended with a pilot bloody and bruised and two brothers under arrest. sal castaneda live at sfo where witnesses instinctively jumped in to help, sal.

>> gasia this story is getting national attention partly because of what other people did, bystander as they helped subdue to violent men on board. two men that were acting i radically to begin with were arrested after being kicked off a flight from miami to san francisco. police say the trouble began just after the plane had left the gate. a flight attendant noticed one of the men couldn't be woken up to put his seat belt on. the attendant told police the man seemed drunk or high. the crew made the decision to return to the gate and asked the two men who are brothers to get off. >> they were sitting there arguing with the captain. they did not want to leave or get off the plane. one of the guys punched the captain right in the eye right here on his face. and then that's when the captain backed up and all the other guys from the airplane started getting in on it. >> they were escorting the gentlemen off the plane as they got through the side door there, one of them actually

struck the pilot right in his face. that's when everybody jumped up. >> reporter: the two men are identified as 27-year-old jonathan baez seen here on the left. and his brother 29-year-old louis baez. both men chased the pilot into the terminal and beat him until other passengers intervened. >> the captain had his whole side of his face was bruised and bloody. they got ice and tried to ice him down. but those two guys had the captain on the ground. >> reporter: these two men intervened. >> we just did what we could to help out. >> reporter: the men are facing several counts including aggravated assault, now those passengers did eventually end up making it here about two hours later, 176 of them came in just before 2:00 this morning. live at san francisco airport, sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. in the past hour and a half the mayor's race in san

a frantic scene in southern california today. if you look at the video you can see why. the truck was carrying a pickup truck when it slammed into the restaurant around 10:30 this morning. two people were hurt, so far no reason for why the tow truck crashed into the restaurant. a dramatic pull rescue in the south bay without a life

infrastructure including roads, bridges and structures. the region's infrastructure is in need of attention. our region got an over all grade of c. tonight investigators are saying that a -week-old wildfire in san diego county was in fact, the work of an arsonist. it includes the borrego state park and los coyotes indian reservation. the 2,000 firefighters working on that fire now say they have it 75% contained. the so called lion fire was sparked by lightning. it's burning in the golden trout area. that area is is so remote that

the forest service is using a pack train of horses and mules to bring food and supplies to firefighters. on the gulf coast of the texas people are getting ready for the arrival of tropical storm don. meteorologist predict it'll hit land late tomorrow between galveston and brownsville and say there's not much chance it'll turn into a hurricane. people along the beach are taking the prospects pretty much in stride. >> on to the weather, today felt a whole lot like yesterday. over tochief meteorologist bill martin. not that i'm complaining. >> it was a little warmer today than yesterday. it's a slow gradual warming. you can see the fog of course it's a big city out there and you can see out by twin peaks, twin peaks notching out the fog

there. it's a topographic feature and it knocks the fog. that's why the noe valley, it's a nice little bay area microclimate. the temperature over the area will go five, six, 10 degrees warmer than what you would find in san francisco. mount diablo in the distance. upper 80s out toward livermore. there's the cool bite along the coast. and yes that's what summertime looks like in the area. that's about what you would expect, right along the coast 50s. inland, 90s. that is a little warmer but low mid-90s out toward sacramento and stockton. the heat is back and temperatures are definitely been coming up. they warmed up as we mentioned over yesterday by a few degrees. they will warm up again tomorrow a few degrees more. fog is back, it burns back by you know early morning like it did today. the sun comes out as you would expect in daytime highs for your friday.

people opposed to circumcision in san francisco are rethinking their strategy after a judge ruled against their ballot initiative today. >> it's time for our california doctors to stop cuts the gentiles of healthy boys. >> it's completely unnecessary. >> a handful of circumcision opponents rallied outside the courtroom today in support of a ballot initiative in november. the measure would have asked voters to ban circumcision for boys under the age of 18. >> parents do not have the right to cut normal body parts off a children. whether it's a finger, whether it's an eyelid, whether it's a part of gentiles. >> reporter: but today judge georgie ordered the measure removed from the ballot she

cooper thieves the most recent incident happening just last night. all together six schools have been hit leaving power out in some buildings just weeks before school is set to begin. ktvu's mike mibach tells us why this is not the work of someone just off the street. these people know what they're doing. >> reporter: that's because we're talking about power, electricity and locating hidden lines of cooper wire. now the school district says once that part is taken care of it's quite easy. all they have to do is pop the pipe, slice the wire, rip it and steal it. boxes of books and supplies inside the move inside hogan middle school. >> cleaning classrooms, we're preparing the office. this is a new site for us. >> reporter: already a new problem. half the building has no power now and probably won't have it next week. >> reporter: his name is mel jordan he's the assistant

superintendent and he's talking about last night's cooper theft. >> they're stripping the wire too. not only are they cutting it they're taking the plastic off, throwing it away and keeping the copper. >> reporter: this thief comes in, strips the cable, takes the cooper. this crime is not the first time it's happened. six schools have been hit this summer. >> what that's telling me right now is it's gotten our attention. >> reporter: the list goes on and the tab goes up. losses are estimated at $100,000. but who? who's committing these crimes in the middle of night? mel jordan has an idea. >> electricians, they have to be familiar about how when you see the work they just basically know how to cut it and pull. it could even be plumber. >> reporter: some law enforcement agencies say that cooper continue to get ripped off because it and other metals are high on price.

>> it's how we get our schools lighting, all our safety measures are being impacted right now. >> reporter: the school district says it is currently reviewing surveillance video. it also will be offering up a reward for any information that leads to an arrest as well as a conviction. reporting live tonight in vallejo, mike mibach. the arraignment has been delayed for a 25-year-old murdering a woman and setting a woman on fire. hector garcia is accused of killing monica rodas and setting her body on fire. monica rodas was in court today. another man velasco is also chargeed in this case. police are inviewing witnesses as they investigate the death of two men. a sheriff deputy say two of them men live in the home on clara street where the bodies were found last night.

detectives are waiting for the coroner to determine the cause of death.investigators say there is no threat to public safety. police in los altos released the sketch of a man accused of flashing a child. he exposed himself then took off. police say he was driving a ford f series pickup truck like the one you see here. it has a distinguishing mark, a pair of stripes on the tailgate of the truck. today at the santa cruz harbor, a new dock is being built to replace the one ripped apart by that tsunami. the damage at the harbor is more extensive and expensive than people first thought. >> reporter: a new dock is being assembled this week at the santa cruz harbor to replace the one known as u dock that was torn apart by the march 11 tsunami. crews from the bellingham marine company expect the new dock to be ready in three weeks. the $1.2 million repair project is a relief to many boaters and visitors who still remember seeing sections of the old dock

being swept away. >> so it might be a littlen convenient but we're excited. we like to see some work getting done around here. >> the project manager says the new dock will be state of the art with its own utility services. >> so it has power, it has water, it has a fire system. >> sturdier material. >> a lot sturdier material. it should be able to withstand a lot more than the old dock did. >> reporter: some sections are literally falling apart. we also found out today there are a lot more repair projects to follow. >> we did however get an asisment report done by a structural engineer that has revealed of the harbor's 29 docks, 23 of them will require complete replacement. >> so this is just the beginning? >> this is the beginning. >> reporter: the dock replacements combined with damage will cost 22 to $25 million. she says fortunately state and federal funds will pay for 94%

of the cost, unfortunately it also means repairs will be going on well into next year. in santa cruz, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. a federal appeals court today approved the bubble law for abortion protest. the law prohibits protesters from coming within 8 feet of abortion clinics. the ninth circuit court of appeals upheld a challenge. saying the enforcement of the law is unconstitutional. the city errors when it let supporters offer words of encouragement but banned opponents trying to change the minds of people going into the clinic. back in may the president held a double digit lead over a republican candidate.

rush hour problem, take a look a hot air balloon landed right on the massachusetts turnpike this morning. there were seven people on board when the pilot had a little trouble controlling the balloon and brought it down on the turnpike. fortunately no one was hurt. it took 30 minutes to get the balloon off of that turnpike. it sounds like a movie, but it's a real threat. we hear about the chance of a comet colliding with the earth. >> reporter: for scientists to find it they didn't have to use telescopes just a home camera. we found this taken by a low level camera on january 4th. quick streaks from upper left to lower right a never before seen meteor shower, dust from an unknown comet. >> i was very excited to find this. >> reporter: peter jeneskis.

and how the whale may have helped herself. plus the new clue police have on the search of a group of robbers who took over a vallejo bank. all of these stories and more are coming up in about 10 minutes. uc berkeley researchers have found why so called flying lemurs travel by gliding from tree to try. scientists found that they can travel faster. but gliding is an unefficient means to travel. it takes 15% more energy because the lemurs first have to climb trees to get to the proper position for gliding.

this has been a pretty nice week, kind of steady as she goes, over to chief meteorologist bill martin and the temperatures climbing a little bit. >> very steadily. we've had an interesting spring weather pattern. and then summer pattern, but this week has been very subtle in its variations. we see a look out at a very popular area, pacific heights, we have a lot of folks living out here. over to the marina district. you have fog showing up there down toward the marina safe way. the fog is starting to pull in there. it'll look a lot like this. this is a north from the north looking south perspective. there's the golden gate bridge. what we're looking at is low visibility as we had this morning. right along the coast, very dense fog. and we even had a little bit of drizzle. we had a little bit of drizzle each morning really for the

past week. subtle changes because if you don't live right along this coast. the coastal sections you're not noticeable drizzle at all. maybe a few clouds that are burning off rapidly. but the pattern repeats itself. so tomorrow morning, there's plenty of fog. just like today and the day before that. as you get into the afternoon hours, fog burns back rapidly. it lingers at the coast. and the heat in the valley. we had upper 90s today out toward stockton. it'll warm up a little bit more tomorrow by virtue of that. the warmth is flowing out of the valley. today, tomorrow, just like today. saturday, just like today maybe a little bit cooler and sunday the same thing. as you go into the afternoon hours, a few high clouds coming up from this system here. as the high moves in it's throwing up some high, some tropical moisture. this is known as the north
